Cape York’s newest tourist attraction hits the water By Giembra Busmer

AFTER years of planning David and Lisa Hill’s dream finally came to fruition on Sunday morning with the launch of their new tour business Western Cape Eco Tours. The Western Cape Bulletin was among the lucky seafarers onboard the Sunset Sienna’s maiden voyage, which included an exploration of the Embley River and Robert’s Creek. The Sunset Sienna is a 9-metre, custom-built aluminium boat, which seats 28 passengers and is manned by two crew. Lisa said she and Dave wanted to give visitors to Cape York, and particularly Weipa, an opportunity to explore our beautiful waterways in comfort and learn more about our unique environment.

“We will be conducting two daily tours and a sunset tour which will give locals and visitors the chance to see Weipa from a different perspective,” she said. “We have been working hard with local historians and wildlife experts to gather accurate and interesting information about our local area and the history of Weipa which we will share with passengers on the tour.” Western Cape Eco Tours’ passengers will be treated to a river view of the Rio Tinto Alcan Weipa shiploader and ships, explore mangrove-lined creeks and observe birds, dolphins, fish and perhaps even crocodiles in their natural habitat during the 90-minute cruises. Plans are also underway for remote camping trips, customised tours and family-friendly fishing charters. “It’s only early days, and we are still feeling our way, but we are so excited to be able to offer

visitors and locals this unique Cape York experience,” Lisa said. “The feedback we received from our first two trips on Sunday was fantastic. Our local waterways are magnificent with an abundance of wildlife and we believe Sunset Sienna is a wonderful way to explore and enjoy this part of the world,” Lisa said. Despite a stiff cool breeze and slightly choppy conditions on Sunday morning the Sunset Sienna provided a stable ride which all passengers found comfortable...and speaking of comfort, there is a toilet and shower provided at the rear of the boat. Western Cape Eco Tours can be booked by phoning Lisa (0411 280 012) or Dave 0417 658 897) or email (westerncapeecotours@ bigpond.com). Fares for the 90-minute cruise are $45 per adult and $35 for children under 12 years of age.

The first passengers are welcomed aboard the Sunset Sierra’s maiden voyage, which departed from Evans Landing, on Sunday morning.

WHAT’S ON...

Home away from home for Cape York patients ConstruCtion is on target for red Cross $6.9 million Wellbeing Centre which will be a home away from home for people receiving treatment at the Cairns Base Hospital, particularly those from remote communities across Cape York and the torres strait. The state-of-the-art building, to be known as Pat Gosper Place, is taking shape on the Lake Street site where Red Cross has provided medical accommodation for over 50 years. When officially opened early next year, the four-storey building will house 44 ensuited rooms with 88 beds, as well as Red Cross regional and branch offices, the Red Cross emergency activation centre and a conference room. Regional manager Michael White said Pat Gosper Place will represent a shift from Red Cross providing emergency accommodation to a new wellbeing model aligned with patient recovery, offering everything from accommodation for people and their carers from rural and remote communities, to wholistic services and support on site

and referrals to other agencies. Mr White said it will fill a real need for this type of centre, particularly for people from remote communities across Cape York and the Torres Strait. Guests will not pay for their accommodation if they are eligible under Queensland Health’s Patient Transfer Subsidy Scheme. “It’s in line with Red Cross’ commitment to building an inclusive society where all people’s basic needs are met and we work to overcome social exclusion as a result of where people may live,” Mr White said. The centre has been funded by Queensland Health ($5 million) and the Australian Government’s Health and Hospitals Fund ($1.9 million). Local construction arm of national group, Hutchinson Builders has been appointed builders. Artwork by Arone Meeks, a Kuku Midigi man currently living in Cairns is featured in the foyer. The artwork captures the wet and dry seasons of the far north, as well as mangroves, sea grasses, land and marine life. “The building was named after local Red Cross luminary

Mrs Gosper was Cairns Citizen of the Year in 1982 and was awarded a Medal of the Order of Australia in 1983.” The transition into the new building is due from when building is completed in late 2013.

The National Plan for School Improvement aims to take Australian schools into the top five countries in the world by 2025. The plan responds to the first comprehensive review of how schools are funded in almost 40 years. Why? • Australia’s international results have dropped from 2nd to 7th in reading and 5th to 13th in maths over the last decade • By Year 9, disadvantaged students are over two years behind their peers • The number of high performing students has dropped by 5% in reading literacy over the last decade How? • Ongoing teacher training • A national curriculum • Fairer funding for Australian school students When? • The National Plan for School Improvement is scheduled to begin in 2014 For more information visit australia.gov.au/betterschools or call 13 17 64

TIME is running out for the community to help local schools and Early Learning Centres to secure educational resources and equipment through the 2013 Woolworths Earn & Learn program. Until Sunday, June 9, 2013, every $10 spent at Woolworths will earn one Woolworths Earn & Learn point. Registered schools will soon be able to redeem these points for a large range of educational resources and equipment across maths, English, science, sports, arts and music categories. The Earn & Learn program continues to increase in popularity with the vast majority of primary schools, high schools and early learning centres registering across the country since the program was launched in April by ambassador Jessica Mauboy. In 2012 the Woolworths Earn & Learn program provided nearly three quarters of a million pieces of educational equipment to more than 12,500 schools. The program provides young Australians with additional resources that will set them on a journey to discover their inner talents and inspire them to learn.

This year’s Woolworths Earn & Learn program has proven more popular than ever with schools around the country. As the program draws to a close for 2013 we encourage customers to continue to support their local school by simply shopping at Weipa Woolworths. Customers can collect Woolworths Earn & Learn points at the checkout. Woolworths Earn & Learn points sheets are available in-store or at www.woolworths.com. au/earnandlearn. Once completed, Earn & Learn points sheets should be dropped off at participating schools or in collection boxes inside the Weipa Woolworths supermarket. If you don’t want to put the stickers on a points sheet just drop the stickers into the boxes in-store and students from the Western Cape College Special Education Program will stick them on for you. The Woolworths Earn & Learn program coordinator at the school will collate the Woolworths Earn & Learn points and the school can redeem these for the equipment and supplies they need most.

Local Detectives report alarming rise in synthetic drug possession in Weipa OVER the last several months Detectives from Weipa have identified an alarming trend of people within the Weipa area in possession of new psychoactive substances such as “Kronic”, “Pineapple Xpress” and other powder forms of supposedly ‘legal highs’. While these products have been labeled as ‘legal highs, there have been specific legislative changes enacted recently to effectively make these products illegal. What are New Psychoactive Substances? • New Psychoactive Substances (NPS) are a classification of substances often designed and marketed as legal alternatives to known illicit drugs such as cannabis, stimulants and hallucinogens. • “Bath salts” is a collective term used to describe a variety of synthetic compounds which mimic the effect known illicit drugs. Bath salts may have similar appearance as Epsom salts however are not chemically related to actual bath salts. • Originally the active ingredients in ‘bath salts’ were found to be analogue cathinones such as 4-methylmethcathinone ((4MMC) which is also known as Mephedrone and MCAT) as well as a substance known as Methylenedioxypyrovalerone (MDPV) which was marketed as mimicking the effects of cocaine. • Synthetic cannabis (cannabinoidomimetics and cannabinomimetics) is a group of synthetic substances designed to mimic the effects of cannabis. Most have no chemical relationship with cannabis however affect the cannabinoid receptors in the brain. • Other substances (e.g. 25INBOMe) that have been identified as hallucinogenic said to mimic the effects of LSD. • Analogue drugs are often re-

search chemicals or known illicit drugs that have had modifications to their chemical structures in an attempt to circumvent drug control legislation. These drugs may or may not have similar pharmacological effects as the parent drug. • These substances have all been marketed at some stage as legal alternatives to illicit drugs however are labelled with disclaimers stating they are not for human consumption in order to circumvent TGA rules. • Manufacturers modify the chemicals used in these products on a regular basis in order to stay ahead of legislative controls by government regulators. Legality of these drugs? In Queensland a large majority of these substances are controlled dangerous drugs under the Drugs Misuse legislation or regulated poisons under the Health (Drugs and Poisons) Regulations. DMA 1986 S4 Definitions In this Act dangerous drug means: (a) a thing specified in the Drugs Misuse Regulation 1987, schedule 1 or 2 or, where the thing so specified is a plant, any part of the thing; and (b) a thing being a salt, derivative or stereo-isomer of a thing referred to in paragraph (a) or any salt of such a derivative or stereo-isomer; and (c) a thing that: (i) has a chemical structure that is substantially similar to the chemical structure

of a thing referred to in paragraph (a) or (b); or (ii) has a pharmacological effect that is substantially similar to the pharmacological effect of a thing referred to in paragraph (a) or (b); or (iii) is intended to have a pharmacological effect that is substantially similar to the pharmacological effect of a thing referred to in paragraph (a) or (b); In addition to Drugs Misuse legislation, the Health Drugs and Poisons Regulation refers to Regulated Poisons named in Schedule 9 of the Standard for Uniform Scheduling of Medicines and Poisons (SUSMP). Schedule 9 of the SUSMP specifically names eight synthetic cannabinomimetic drugs, eight chemical family classifications of synthetic cannabinomimetic drugs capture all classification of any other synthetic cannabinoidomimetic. In Queensland there are 35 specifically named synthetic cannabinoids in schedule 2 of the Drugs Misuse Regulation and a number of analogue drugs are also listed in the schedule. Many others are covered under the extended definition of a dangerous drug. Changes to the childcare industry There is an explosion in the number of children receiving child care across Australia with new figures just released by the Office of early Childhood education and Child Care stating the increase was nearly 20,000 in just one quarter and nearly four per cent over the year. “This is such an important industry for Australia,” explains

Rikki Cooper of MEGT Australian Apprenticeships Centre. “It not only empowers more Australians to join the workforce, in its own right, it is a significant employer. But the industry has only seven months to meet its national qualification requirements deadline.” Within each long-day care centre or pre-school, half of all educators who are required to meet the relevant educator-to-

All family day care co-ordinators will need to have an approved diploma-level early childhood education and care qualification or above. All family day care educators will be required to have (or be actively working towards) an approved Certificate III level early childhood education and care qualification, or equivalent. “The key skills training required is supported by the Australian government,” continues Mrs Cooper. “As an Australian Apprenticeships Centre, we assess an employer’s eligibility to receive financial support of up to $4,000 for each staff member undertaking their train-

The relevant Australian Government incentives for traineeships in the child care industry are: Certificate III in Children’s Services – $1500 commencement, $2500 completion. Letters to the editor email: editor@westerncapebulletin.com.au

Government must rule out rushed Cape York World Heritage listing I AM calling on the Labor Government to rule out trying to implement World Heritage status over land in Cape York before the September 14 federal election. After asking a series of questions in a Senate estimates committee, I am not convinced the Government would honour a previous commitment about Aboriginal consent to World Heritage decisions on Cape York. The Government has previously promised not to impose World Heritage status over any of Cape York without the consent of the traditional owners. However, I am no longer confident they will keep their word and I am calling on Environment Minister Tony Burke to rule out imposing World Heritage status over any land on Cape York without informed consent by the traditional owners.

I also call on Mr Burke to state – and this was the issue I raised with his Departmental representative in the estimates committee – what form consultation on this issue will take, how they will assess what represents consent from traditional owners and what discussions have been held so far. It is crucial that there is broad consultation, including consultation with traditional owners who are not currently living on Cape York. The responses I received in the committee do not leave me confident that the Government will not try to wriggle out of its previous commitment and I am therefore calling on the Minister to rule out any change to World Heritage status before the federal election. In their response to my questions, Departmental staff certainly would not rule out lodging a World Heritage nomination over parts of Cape York before the Government goes to the September 14 election. I am also seeking further information about the consent process described by the Department as being with eight traditional owner groups and

involving state and federal government funding of some $1.8 million. The aim of these contracts apparently is to gather advice about whether those groups consent to World Heritage nomination and, if they do consent, then over what areas. This is an area that needs further clarification to get to the bottom of exactly what is going on with payments with these contracts and the timeframes imposed for consent and it is a matter I will continue to pursue with Environment Minister Tony Burke. It is also extremely important that everyone be consulted properly. Some traditional owners may not currently live on the Cape but if anyone tries to give away someone else’s land to World Heritage without

consulting them and getting their agreement, well it will start World War 3. I have fought World Heritage listing and Wild Rivers legislation to keep the resources of Cape York open to the Aboriginal people. Previously, under questioning from Nationals leader Warren Truss, the Labor Government said it would not try to have World Heritage status declared over the Cape without Indigenous community consent. As a result, the people of Cape York can be directly involved in farming and mining ventures, like the planned $20-billion Aurukun bauxite mine. However, I am concerned that the Government will now try to rush through declaration of World Heritage status in the Cape, without a robust consent process, before it goes to the election. First Contact Memorial celebration thanks ON behalf of Mapoon Aboriginal Shire Council, I would like to thank the many people and organisations who contributed to the development of the First Contact Memorial project and the opening ceremony at Mapoon last week. Thanks to everyone in the Mapoon community for their support for the project over the past few years and on the day of the ceremonies. To the Mapoon Elders we thank you for adding such grace to the occasion by your presence and the welcome to country given by Aunty Harriet Flinders. Our appreciation to Margaret Mara (HACC Coordinator) and Pastor James Hughes for arranging transport for the Elders. Thanks also to Linda McLachlan, Amos Njaramba and the Napranum Council for arranging transport of Elders from Napranum to join us at the ceremony. Roger Collins and his building works team, Ray Walters and Addie Mamoose, have done a great job in constructing the base wall and slab, installing the Duyfken silhouette and for placing the twelve cast bronze plaques with professional craftsmanship and precision. Wayne Collinson has always been ready to assist with plumbing, transporting sand and erecting the marquees – many thanks for your support Porky. Community artists Daphne De Jersey, Diane Nicholls and Sandy Toeboy all contributed their wonderful artistic talents to the plaque designs on the memorial. Jane Blackwood, Louise

Stone, all of the Mapoon Rangers team and Mariah Guivarra in Land & Sea admin made a major contribution to the success of the project over the past two years. They did a mighty job to clean up the area surrounding the gardens and old mission area, they propagated trees for the gardens, kept the trees watered during the dry season, decorated the fence-line for the opening ceremony, prepared name tags for guests, assisted with the last minute printing of programmes and many other tasks. The Mapoon Interim Land & Sea Advisory Committee, chaired by Mr William Busch, has given much support to the project. To Neil McMahon and the Mapoon CEA crew, our thanks for constructing the memorial gardens fence and paths and for all your assistance with transport of chairs, tables, portaloos etc. before and after the ceremony. The assistance of Garry Hutchinson, Head of Western Cape College, for lending the College chairs and tables for both ceremonies, was much appreciated. The Mapoon Children’s Choir (Mapoon Aghama Tja’a), led by Alana Milson and Reverend Michelle Cook, sang beautifully at the ceremony and we thank you all for your dedication. The traditional dances by the Descendance Dance Company led by Ronnie Guivarra were an important part of the cultural ceremony and were greatly enjoyed by everyone present at the First Contact Memorial gardens. Head of Mapoon Campus, Western Cape College, Baressa Frazer, her staff including Troy Park, Alana Milson, Heidi Booth, Sheree Jia and the Cam-

pus students contributed much thought and preparation to the official visit by Her Excellency the Governor and the Netherlands delegation to the Campus. This was a highlight of the day and much appreciated by everyone in the official party. Thank you too, Craig Smith, for preparing the immaculate Campus grounds for the visit! Major Chris Rosenthal CSC and Warrant Officer Tony Harris – your wise advice and the excellent guard of honour provided at the First Contact Memorial site and later at the War Memorial by Bravo Company, 51st Battalion - The Far North Queensland Regiment added much to the ceremony and brought great credit to your unit. Rio Tinto Alcan staff at Weipa and Brisbane assisted the project in many ways, financially and with in-kind support. Our appreciation goes to Armando Torres, Jim Singer, Julia Wilkins, Anne Siegmeier, Gareth Manderson, Gary Blocksidge, Neil Dickinson and the Civil Construction crew, Cherie Woodham, Scott McIntyre and the Community Relations team. Thanks also to Ian Pressley OAM and Peter McCulkin, Weipa Town Authority, for your assistance with transport for special guests, Keith Payne VC, OAM and Florence Payne OAM on the day of the ceremony. Councillor Polly Smith led a small committee to assist with planning for the event and Councillors Aileen Addo, Ricky Guivarra and Beryl Woodley all contributed to this work, as well as proof-reading all the plaques for historian Geoff Wharton. Following the First Contact Memorial opening ceremony, morning tea and lunch were provided at the Sports and

Recreation Hall by Council, courtesy of the Department of Natural Resources and Mines. We thank Jan Bradley and Michael Coots of DNRM, Cairns for their advice and support with the catering and for organising the Deed of Grant handover ceremony in cooperation with the Old Mapoon Aboriginal Corporation. We are also very grateful to Tony Smith for his craftsmanship and generosity in constructing the stage platforms for the hall at such short notice. Special thanks to Ailsa Ling, Lou Akenson and everyone involved in catering for the morning tea and lunch. The food was delicious and beautifully presented. Mapoon Council staff supported the project in their work behind the scenes to ensure that all was ready on the big day. It was an honour to receive the visit of Her Excellency the Governor, Ms Penelope Wensley AC and Mr Stuart McCosker, with the Netherlands delegation led by Mr Fred de Graaf, President of the Netherlands Senate, along with executives from Rio Tinto Alcan and Van Oord Australia. We were delighted that Ms Florence Charger, Chair of the Western Cape Communities Trust and staff of the WCCCA office also could join us for the ceremony. If we have missed any person or organisation in this letter please accept our apologies. This has been a significant event in the life of the Mapoon community and we invite residents of the Western Cape region to come and see the magnificent new First Contact Memorial situated near the old mission area, Cullen Point. from the Scherger Detention Centre. The court heard the men, aged 19, 22, and 24, travelled from Victoria to Weipa, where two of them purchased airline tickets to Cairns for some of the asylum seekers. The travel agent alerted authorities and the men were arrested at Weipa Airport with one of the escapees.

The three men will be required to report to Victorian police three times a week after being released. The Immigration Department has confirmed that it has moved the seven escapees to the Villawood Detention Centre in Sydney. They are due to face court again later this month.

I hope that you can see what love the Lord had for us that he willingly allowed himself to be sentenced to death by a kangaroo court led by Jewish spiritual leaders that broke many of their own rules to get their way. We are now reading from Mark Ch 15 vs 20 - 32 where, after the severe beating, the Lord was finally led off along the road to the cross on Golgotha. It’s a small rocky hill not far from Jerusalem, the same hill where some scholars believe that Abraham was challenged

by God to sacrifice his son to see how much he loved God. The name Golgotha means “skull”. On the way to his crucifixion, a Roman soldier must have seen that the Lord was too weakened from the beatings to carry the Cross any further and forced a North African man from Cyrene called Simon to carry the Cross. The Bible reports that he had sons called Alexander and Rufus. Simon would have been in Jerusalem after scrimping and saving money to fulfil his wish, as with all Jews from around the world, to

celebrate at least one Passover in Jerusalem. I wonder what kind of impact carrying the Lord’s cross had on Simon? Did he get angry that he had to carry someone else’s burden and when he got to Golgotha quickly put down the Cross and hurry away? Or did the Lord’s close presence have a real life changing impact on him, sensing that there was more to the crucifixion than what seemed a criminal’s death? The Lord causes intrigue.

Rev Michael Connolly.

Newman pledges support during Napranum visit DURING a visit to Cape York last week Queensland Premier Campbell Newman spent a morning in the Napranum community and was very impressed with what he saw. Community leaders, representatives from Women of Worth and Indigenous trainees were given the opportunity to address the Premier and his wife Lisa during their visit. The Premier was given an insight into the community’s 10, five and one-year plans which were adopted by the Napranum Aboriginal Shire Council (NASC) in March 2012, and the achievements made so far. “It is clear that you have done a lot of work over the last year. There is significant

change since I last visited Napranum,” Mr Newman said. “You have demonstrated that you can develop your community with the funds available. My Government will support you to facilitate achievement of your goals under your community plan.” “There are other ways of supporting communities other than through additional funding. These include creating a supportive environment and amending laws to facilitate development. Your initiative to undertake the social program Whole of Community Change (WOCC) is commendable. It is good to carry the community along as you carry out development projects,” Mr Newman said.

MiHaven director, James Mort (back left) with Queensland Premier Campbell Newman and 16 Napranum Shire Council Indigenous trainees in the NASC training room during the Premier’s visit to the community last week.

Following breakfast in the NASC boardroom Mr Newman and his wife Lisa were taken on a tour of the Napranum community, including the new subdivision where houses are currently under construction in a four-year joint venture between NASC and MiHaven. “The five houses built by

the Council and MiHaven are of very good quality when compared to houses built by contractors in other communities,” Mr Newman observed. The new Napranum store and future supermarket site were also visited and Mr Newman praised the community’s joint ventures with the Heritage Resort and

Island & Cape. “This is the way to develop Napranum,” he said. Mr Newman said he was happy to hear that Rio Tinto had agreed to give Napranum some work to stimulate economic development. “This is music to my ears,” he said. NASC chief executive officer Amos Njaramba said

in his view the visit went very well. “The community was very happy and appreciative of the visit by the Premier and his wife. All in all the Napranum residents were very happy to get an audience with the Premier and were happy with the opportunity to share breakfast,” Mr Njaramba said.

Medal honour for Margaret’s Nan WEIPA local Margaret Masters is as proud as punch of her grandmother, Ivy Margaret Booth, who has received long-overdue recognition for her work as a volunteer in the Australian Women’s Land Army (AWLA) during WWII. As the region’s Australian Government representative, Federal MP Warren Entsch officially presented 97year old great, great grandmother Ivy with a Civilian Service Medal 1939-45 last month and Margaret travelled to Port Douglas to attend the ceremony. “Nan absolutely loved her volunteer work with the AWLA,” Margaret said. “She’s always been such a ‘goer’ – in fact she still is – and to receive recognition for her efforts during WWII was a fantastic moment for her. We couldn’t be more proud of her.” The Civilian Service Medal recognises the service of eligible civilians in Australia during World War II who ‘served in arduous circumstances in support of the war effort as part of organisations with military-like arrangements and conditions of service’. “When my grandfather went in the army, Nan used to make camouflage knits and volunteered to do all sorts of work like that,” Margaret said. “When they called for people to look after the land – because all the

young farmers had signed up – Nan went in for that. “She loved it, she was a country girl. She did a good job, helped our country, and our troops.” Ivy first worked in Stanthorpe, in South East Queensland, picking fruit, and then shifted to Biloela in Central Queensland picking cotton. She was then moved to Mt Kooyong, near Julatten, where the farms produced vegetables for the American forces. Ivy’s husband was a volunteer in the Australian Imperial Force (AIF) but he received an eye injury and was discharged in 1944, at which time Ivy gave up the Land Army. The couple moved to Mossman in 1950, where Ivy worked at the Queens’ Hotel, Joe Johnson’s grocery store, and in the candy bar at the picture theatre, while her husband worked at Mossman Mill. They later lived at both Newell and Cooya Beaches. “This is one of those situations where I feel very privileged to be involved,” said Mr Entsch said at the medal-presentation ceremony. “Ivy’s friend Helena Kanak-Dickenson was speaking to her recently about her war experiences. When Helena found out that Ivy had never been recognised for her official role, she contacted my office to see if there was

anything we could do. “After some research, it turned out that Ivy was entitled to the Civilian Service Medal 1939-45, and in fact, she should have received notification of it after 1995, when the medal was introduced. “For some reason she didn’t receive it, but we were able to request a new one and I’m honoured to have presented it to Ivy.” Ivy’s husband passed away 25 years ago and she now lives at the OzCare Nursing Home in Port Douglas. As well as daughter Mary (Margaret’s mother), Ivy has two grandchildren, two great grandchildren, and six great, great grandchildren. “She’s our royalty,” Margaret proudly told the Western Cape Bulletin.

The work will take approximately five weeks to complete. The dredgers, as well as support vessels, have restricted manoeuvring capability so boaties are asked to take note of the displayed warning flags and lights. AFL wrap-up with Dallas ROUND 10 was fairly predictable and most matches were strong wins to the dominant teams. The top eight is taking shape but there is now five teams battling it out for eighth spot. Fremantle and the Western Bulldogs won the only two close games on the weekend. Fremantle had a good win away from home and hold their spot in the top four after a close one over Adelaide. The Crows almost pinched another game in the dying seconds but Fremantle held on. The Bulldogs got over the line by nine in a low-scoring affair with Port Adelaide in Darwin. The Power have now lost five straight and have slipped to 11th. Collingwood smashed the Lions at the Gabba, Carlton had a training run against GWS, and Sydney deserved their 40-point win over the Bombers. Essendon have now lost a few, dropped to fifth and aren’t looking as good as they did a few weeks back. Geelong got a scare against the Suns in the first game played under lights at a re-vamped Kardina Park. Scores were level at three -quarter time and even 10 minutess into the final term the Suns weren’t totally out of it, after Ablett snapped an unbelievable goal under pressure from 45 metres out in the pocket. The margin blew out to 50 in the last 15 minutes but wasn’t a true reflection of the contest. Hawthorn walloped the Demons and North Melbourne stuck to their guns to keep their season alive by rolling the Saints. On Monday night Richmond blew away West Coast at home to reclaim a spot in the top eight. Round 11 is the first of the split-rounds over the next three weeks. Each week six teams have a bye for rest and recuperation. Friday night features Essendon and Carlton at the MCG. This should be a cracker! The other close game this weekend should be Adelaide vs Sydney. The Gold Coast host the Kangaroos while St Kilda takes on West Coast in Melbourne. Collingwood play the Demons and Geelong almost have a bye, fronting up against GWS. The teams with byes are: Port Adelaide, Richmond, Western Bulldogs, Brisbane, Fremantle and Hawthorn. My Tips - Essendon, Geelong, Sydney, North, West Coast, Collingwood. That’s the wrap! Dallas

WITH State of Origin game one on Wednesday, many teams had byes in round 12 as representative players went into camp. Friday night’s game was a close encounter, seeing the Bulldogs edging out the Dragons in the end. Then on Saturday the Rabbitohs beat the Knights without some key players. Sunday’s “Queensland derby”, saw the Titans beat the Cowboys in a dominant display. Then Monday night’s game saw the Warriors thrash a depleted Broncos outfit quite convincingly. Heading into round 13 we have the first State Of Origin game on Wednesday. Can the Mighty Maroons keep their magnificent run of victories alive or will the Blues stop the run? To kick-off round 13 on Friday we have the Eels taking on the Roosters. Then Saturday there are two games, with the Knights coming up against the Dragons and the Cowboys playing the Bulldogs. Super Sunday has three games - firstly the Panthers take on the Tigers, then the Warriors play the Sea Eagles and the Storm play the in-form Sharks. Monday night’s match will bring the round to a close with the Raiders playing the Broncos. The Rabbitohs and the Titans both have a bye this round. The biggest test in round 13 will be representative players backing up from Origin one. Will this have an effect on their club teams performances throughout the following few rounds? ...QUEENSLANDER... Rugby league a family affair for Nixons Alf Wilson story and pics

MOST fathers would watch their 18-year-old son play rugby league from the sideline. But Napranum 37-year-old Jason Nixon gets a much closer view of his son Shaquel as they regularly line-up in the same side together. Jason played lock and Shaquel as hooker for the Northern Cape side which contested the Remote Area Rugby League FNQ Challenge in Cairns on May 25 and 26. “We switched around a bit with our positions but it is great to be in the same side as Shaquel,” Jason said. It is indeed rare for a father and son to be in the same senior team but Jason and Shaquel have been doing it for several years. “True, you don’t hear of many father and sons in the same

team but we both like it. I try and pass on my experience to the younger guys,” Jason said. Jason has bucket loads of experience having competed at more than 50 Allblacks carnivals including at Cairns, the Dan Ropeyarn at Bamaga, the Island of Origin on Badu Island and the Zenadth Kes on Thursday island. “Myself and Shaquel have played in several Allblacks carnivals together including at Cairns and Bamaga,” Jason said. Proud dad Jason and his admiring son Shaquel also lined up for Natives in the 2012 Cape York wet season and the Cape Cluster competition. “We managed to win the wet season last year but fell short in the Cape Cluster,” Jason said. They are both key members of the Natives side which won

its first two matches of the 2013 wet season over Napranum Brothers and Weipa Raiders. The third round was set down for last weekend. One of the shortest players in North Queensland rugby league at 155cm, Jason shone for Northern Cape at the FNQ Challenge being dangerous from dummy half. “Shaquel is a bit taller than me at 180cm,” Jason said. Jason and Shaquel look set to play for a team at the coming Island of Origin carnival on Badu Island in early July. Another son Whyte, aged 16, also played for Natives last year in the second row. “In September Whyte will travel to France to play for the Australian Indigenous junior talent squad, but in rugby union.” Jason said.

Soccer finals fever as Weipa season ends

Weipa Soccer grand final champions: Titans Red team – Jamie Clarke, Qurran Fagan, Charlton Keppel, Sethryn Smith, Kyle Hunter, William Levi-Gobbey, Harry Bakker and Rayesh Wipa.

THE Weipa Soccer season concluded with six sensational games. The teams have improved so much this season and are already looking forward to next years season. Well done to all players for their fantastic efforts this year and great sportsmanship. A huge thank you to the committee for organising the season - without these dedicated volunteers there would be no soccer for our children to enjoy.

Squirts All players were huge grinners and winners. They had such a lot of fun this year and have started to develop some great skills there were some huge kicks and wonderful goals. Tykes Gold 3 defeated Green 2 in the grand final match. The cheer-squad was on fire in this very close match and the players had a really fun game. Gold were the victors and

Page 22 Western Cape Bulletin June 5, 2013

they were very happy with their efforts. Green were gracious in defeat - with Sean doing an incredible number of laps of the field! Well done boys. Red 3 def Blue 0 in a friendly match. A fun match with lots of great contests and some awesome goals by Red. Teens Green 4 defeated Red 2 in the grand final match. The Green players were dynamic in this final showdown and

claimed victory. However, Red were amazing with only three players and really gave Green a run for their money. A great effort Teens. Gold 5 drew with Blue 5 in a friendly match. It just goes to show how fierce the competition has been this year. Titans Red 2 defeated Blue 1. Red came out season victors after dominating most of the year. Blue never gave

up and battled on to score one brilliant goal. Good on you Titans. The Soccer Club players and supporters all enjoyed a lovely sausage sizzle after the matches. Again, thank you to the volunteers for assisting with this - your help is appreciated. A big thank you to Woolworths for contributing to our yummy barbecue. Downsizing, quite often is the key, as well as different styles of lures. Small soft plastics, minnows, soft vibes like Transams, Ecoda prawn lures and stick baits should all be tested before giving up. If live baiting in the shallows, try an unweighted rig to increase your strike rate. Offshore, for those who braved the blustery conditions, they have found plenty of bait and decent Mackerel on their favourite reefs. Fishing heavy tackle has helped beat the sharks sometimes. Some medium-sized Tuskfish, Coral Trout and Fingermark have been coming in from reefs four to eight metres deep,

test of patience and smart lure choices. They managed a few species like Salmon, Queenfish and Fingermark, though of course her target fish was Barra. A few Barra were caught most days around both high and the lower tides with seven being scored on her last day. Fishing a few shallow banks with plenty of baitfish getting munched, but no strikes, a quick change to a different style of Mangrove Studio Lure often got the strikes, Reiko’s favourite being a nice Barra that boofed her Mahi Pen stickbait right at the side of the boat. as the small tinnies are staying in close. Big schools of Golden Trevally, Salmon, Queenfish and Tarpon have been patrolling the beach. Those of us in the TackleWorld Shop have received a real treat this week when we hosted Reiko from Japan. Reiko is our supplier of Mangrove Studio lures, an exclusive lure range for our store that covers Barra, Salmon, Jacks, Queenfish and offshore predators too. Reiko spent a week fishing in our Tackleworld charter boat and proved how well the Mangrove Studio lure fooled our fish. NORTHERN United coach Dave Kennedy from Kowanyama is confident Cape York players will have a major influence in the representative game against Outback Queensland in Cairns on June 29. Kennedy coached a Kowanyama side to victory in the 2012 Cape Cluster competition grand final. He was appointed to the United job and players were picked after the May 25 and 26 Remote Area Rugby League FNQ Challenge in Cairns. Kennedy told the Bully from Kowanyama on May 29 that the five Northern Cape players and

three Southern Cape selected for United would be potential match-winners. “They all did well at the carnival and we have picked a big mobile forward pack and Weipa’s Garreth Smith will be a key. Also there will be speed to burn out wide. Many other players can be considered unlucky not to have been selected,” Kennedy said.

Reiko with a 66cm barra caught on her Mangrove Studio Mahi Pen Stickbait.

This week is your last chance to fine-tune your fishing spots and plan of attack for Weipa’s biggest event. The whole town, and plenty of short-term residents look forward to the Weipa Fishing Classic every year. Committee members have again worked tirelessly to organise a great event and have over $100,000 of prizes on offer. Major draw prize is again

a boat package worth $42,000 and over 60 major draw and random prizes for people attending over the weekend. Fishing trophies have grown this year, to 12 species prizes, with open, ladies and junior categories and there are plenty of estuary and reef species to target. Tackleworld Weipa have sponsored an expanded range of prizes this year and winners

could receive one of many products from Finnor, Shimano, Dawia, St Croix rods, Evacool iceboxes, Flambeau tackle-boxes and GoPro cameras. Plenty of keen locals have been fishing lately in the leadup to the competition, some doing quite well on estuary species such as Barra, Salmon, Fingermark and Jacks, although overall the transition into winter

has made it tougher to tempt a Barra or Salmon onto a lure. Some gutters in the Hay or Embley system have had large numbers of predators attacking the Mullet and Prawns schools, but when they’re eating mini jelly Prawns, finding the right lure to tempt them has been a matter of multiple lure changes to discover the trigger.  continued page 23
