IN all my 14 years as an elected member of Town Office(Weipa Town Authority)I never saw any justification as to why we would be better off as a Local Authority. Politicians of all persuasions have come and gone, all promising the world and giving nothing. Ask yourself would we be better off? I believe not. Why would the state government need the liability? The current government has no money. Should Weipa join the queue? Some people are always crying we get no state funding . . . well guess what? There is none. Let’s have another enquiry into normalising Weipa - we’ve already had three - only do it this time by flying a DRONE over the town. Let’s not kid ourselves folks. If Weipa was to become a local authority it would have happened in a heartbeat years ago.

AS a resident of Weipa I would like to congratulate Woolies for being voted best store in Queensland and the way they now have two barges a week so people in town can get fresh produce and other lines the same as people who don’t live in remote areas. And yet, how sad is it when you go shopping on a Saturday morning and you can’t ﬁnd any fresh milk in the refrigerated area? Even trying to buy tomato sauce for an Australia Day barbecue was out of the question – six bottles of low-salt sauce was all that was provided on the shelf. THE 2014 NAIDOC theme was announced this week. The theme Serving Country: Centenary & Beyond honours all Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander men and women who have fought in defence of country, including those who have served with honour and pride in Australia’s military conﬂicts and engagements across the globe. Nominations have also opened for the National NAIDOC Awards and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander Australians are encouraged to nominate fellow community members for the awards, which highlight the achievements of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people.” There are 10 award categories, including the Lifetime Achievement Award. Award nominations close on April 23, and award recipients will be honoured during NAIDOC Week and at the National NAIDOC Awards Ceremony and Ball on the Gold Coast on Friday, July 11. The National NAIDOC poster competition is also now open. The competition provides the opportunity for national exposure to upcoming Indigenous artists, with the National NAIDOC Poster displayed across Australia in workplaces, schools and community organisations. The annual poster competition includes a $5,000 prize for the winning design, which will become the image for the 2014 National NAIDOC Poster. Entries close on March 28. So we were listening to their President’s telephone calls, but that’s no more than a harmless prank. A little boyish good fun and no reason to go off in a huff. And they are being totally unreasonable about the refugees. I don’t know if it was their fault, but our dollar seems to have gone off in a huff as well. It’s all very well to bang on about the wonders of the free market when the dollar in your pocket is worth a touch more every week, but when it suddenly drops, the cold wind of capitalism is blowing up your trouser leg and life for a hard-working Prime Mnister is definitely uncomfortable.

And everyone has got their hand out. General Motors wanted propping up again, and threw a tantrum when Tony tried to expound the beneﬁts of hard work making strong companies. They have gone, along with our car industry. The fruit canners had their hand out, but they were easy to refuse. Then Qantas joined the queue, threatening to replace the kangaroo emblem on their aircraft with a star and crescent if Tony wouldn’t hand over lots of cash. Now the small farmers (natural coalition voters to a man) are demanding something is done about the drought. No good giving bracing speeches about natural

business cycles to them; they’re not listening. They keep pointing out that if their animals don’t get fed, they will die. Tony has had to put his Akubra and Williams on and go to kick some bull dust out in the wide dry land, or risk a parliamentary revolt. And now there is more. Likely a wimpy kid complaining about young thugs in the play ground, the Indonesians (yes, them again) have run off to the Americans. They think Tony is not playing fair and I dare say teacher will take a dim view of Tony’s bad behaviour. There might be more to the Prime Minister’s job than our Tony had imagined.

Cape York communications a disgrace: CYSF Residents of Cape York have recently endured yet another week of widespread telecommunication outages and Cape York sustainable Futures (CYsF) has ramped up its endeavors to meet with telstra executives and the Federal Government to find a solution to give residents much needed reprieve. “We have been inundated with members complaints after the service for all land lines, mobile and internet which failed on the Friday and then again on the Sunday, taking all services out for most of the day,” said Trish Butler, Chief Executive Officer, CYSF. The region was without critical communications, and this was without the presence of even a severe weather event. Over the past two months there has been widespread outages across the Cape York region including isolated stations. “The system can only be considered fragile at best and relying on a single line of

communication does not take into account the very basics of risk management. The situation needs urgent rectification,” said Trish Butler. Most impacted were those that can ill afford it. “Centrelink in Weipa ground to a halt, and EFTPOS machines were not only down in Weipa but all over the Cape, leading to large numbers of people unable to purchase essential food items,” said Mrs Butler. Residents of Cape York like Anne and Rodney Raymond of Kimba Station are outraged with the lack of communications all round and they say response times and service outcomes are getting worse. “Phone faults in CYP are taking longer to fix and they have to be fixed multiple times and still no guarantee that they keep working. “Most faults are taking two to four weeks or longer to be looked at or fixed. “If the phones are out we are unable to put in a strip report

on mail day so the mail doesn’t come. Sending a strip report by email does not guarantee that it is received at all, or on time, so again no mail. “On other days we just don’t get a mail service for no reason or because there is no plane or the plane is getting serviced - so no mail for two weeks,” Anne and Rodney said. “The internet is as unreliable as the phone and mail services. The NBN roll out has made no difference to speed or reliability. It did give us a slightly bigger down/upload but it still doesn’t cope with requirements for school and the changing technology upgrades, nor do they match a fraction of what is available in towns. “We cannot run a successful enterprise with services that only work sometimes and it will only get worse as the infrastructure is getting older and isn’t keeping up with demand. “Medical services are hindered because of road closures and bridges going under water

even during the first storms of the wet season making it impossible to get to medical clinics,” said Anne & Rodney Raymond on an email to CYSF this week. CYSF will be meeting with Federal Member for Leichhardt, Warren Entsch, immediately after his return from this sitting of Parliament with a view to him facilitating a meeting with senior executives of Telstra to explore more suitable service options. “The Cape becomes paralyzed because we depend on a single line of communication. In the 21st century this really is unacceptable,” Mrs Butler said. “CYSF (then Cape York Peninsula Development Association) played a pivotal advocacy role in the ‘roll-out’ of mobile phone towers throughout the region; and we’ll be stepping up to the plate to again advocate for a better and much more improved service for Cape York residents,” said Mrs Butler.

Politicians slam Wilderness Society claims MeMBeR for Cook, david Kempton has slammed claims by the Wilderness society (tWs) that the reported outcomes from his forum on the draft Cape York regional plan were “misrepresented.” “I am very disappointed TWS has tried to derail the recommendations that came out of the forum,” he said. “Allegations the forum was stacked against the environment and the outcomes misrepresented are utter nonsense and an insult to the 150-plus people who took part on the day.” Mr Kempton said representatives from TWS attended the forum and actively participated in formulating the outcomes. “They claim Indigenous groups have not been consulted. “I am confident the department has been very thorough in its engagement process and the indigenous councils are

well represented on the Deputy Premier’s working group.” Mr Kempton said no Cape York landscape was under immediate threat and the plan would “get the balance right.” “Wild Rivers couldn’t have been more divisive, whereas the final Cape York Regional Plan will have broad scale community support,” he said. Mr Kempton said while he believed the landscape needed to be protected the scope of the conservation economy only offers limited opportunities. “I want to see Cape York investing in the real economy not relying on handouts,” he said. “My forum was a huge success. Now it is important everyone in the Cape put in an individual submission by the March 25 deadline. Leichhardt MP Warren Entsch has

thrown his support behind Cook MP David Kempton in slamming The Wilderness Society’s claims of misrepresentation at the Cape York Forum. “I was there and there is no doubt that The Wilderness Society representatives did participate in the forum,” Mr Entsch said. “TWS may not have liked the fact, but it was the first time in many years that I have seen an audience of predominantly Cape York residents actually discussing the future of Cape York. “Very importantly, the group included the overwhelming majority of the elected mayors of Cape York’s Indigenous communities. “Any suggestion to the contrary – that Indigenous interests were not consulted – yet again highlights the dishonesty of The Wilderness Society and their campaign.”

NEW priorities for State and Federal regional natural resource management (NRM) programs have resulted in changes to the levels of funding for managing pest animals and weeds on Cape York. The new programs now focus on supporting grazing and farming families to operate more sustainably, as well as caring for the environment and conserving threatened species such as marine turtles. Over recent years C a p e Yo r k r a n g e r groups, Land Trusts and graziers have also shown increased interest for self-managing pests and in many cases they are now funded

directly to implement the work on their lands. Historically, much of this work has been carried out on behalf of these landholders by the very capable staff of the Cook Shire Council hosted Cape York Weed and Feral Animal Program. Cape York NRM has been a major external provider of funds to Cook Shire Council for the program. Whilst Council has made the decision to cease operating the program in its current capacity from the end of this financial year due to reductions in the levels of external funding, Cape York NRM will continue to fund a range of weed control and feral animal abate-

ment programs on Cape York. Bob Frazer, CEO of Cape York NRM, said that funding which had been allocated for Cook Shire Council for the next two years will now be put out to tender in March instead. “While Regional NRM funding for the abatement of feral animals and weeds has changed, it remains a priority for land managers and governments. We e n c o u r a g e a l l groups on Cape York with pest management capabilities to consider putting in tenders when they are made available” he said. Serious assult of Police officer Kowanyama POLICE have charged a 27-yearold local man with a number of charges following the alleged serious assault of a Police officer in Kowanyama on Monday night, February 17. A 27-year-old constable was speaking to two men on the corner of Kowanyma and Pindi streets around 3.45pm on Monday. It will be alleged the officer was hit in the face with a piece of concrete, as he stood next to his vehicle, by a third man. The assault left the officer dazed

and with a bloodied face. The offender, who initially ﬂed on foot, was later located nearby and taken into custody without further incident. He was charged with serious assault Police, obstructing Police, wilful damage and public nuisance. The injured Police ofﬁcer was taken to a Kowanyama health clinic where he received treatment for a deep laceration to his head. The man was due to appear in the Weipa Magistrates Court on Tuesday, February 18.

Mr John Smith, the current Managing Director of Island & Cape, has accepted an appointment as Director to serve with three ALPA Directors on the Board of the new Island & Cape entity. An Indigenous Cape York mayor will also be a director of the Board, with Mr Dereck Walpo, the Mayor of Aurukun to be the ﬁrst appointed Mayor. I AM married with three amazing kids and have resided in Weipa for eight years. As a family we have lived and worked throughout Australia and overseas. We have had the opportunity to live in Africa (three years) and the Middle East (one year). The people, the cultures, the religion, the music, the food and the fun we have experienced through these travels have enriched our lives and, indeed, taught us the importance of respect, tolerance, and flexibility. Our travels and experiences have promoted our belief in the need for an active appreciation of the diversity of humankind - and the richness that has brought to us. My professional background is in health and welfare. I am a nurse and counsellor and have worked in these, and related fields for the last 30 years. My chosen vocations have enabled me to meet and support a wide range of individuals from varied backgrounds and professions, including bikies, entertainers, drug addicts, alcoholics, prostitutes, clergy, people on probation and parole and adults and children with intellectual and/or physical disabilities, highflying professionals and the regular folk – like you and I. At this stage of my life, I am able to reflect with much fondness and satisfaction on the amazing journey I have had to this point. This journey has brought me here to Weipa where I see a new chal-

Due to the fact that I would be entering the role in mid-term, my first response to this question is to assess what has already been put in place in accordance with the Weipa Community Plan. During the campaign I have taken the stance of not presenting specific policies or making promises to the people of Weipa. Instead, I am approaching the impending election with the following view: we have all experienced the frustration and disappointment when we – as the public, see the promises and pledges presented during political campaigning dissolve, or be significantly altered once the party/individual is elected. I do not intend to follow this path. I am committed to reviewing current plans that have been tabled and – through direct and continued consultation with Weipa residents, ascertain what they believe are the strengths/issues of this wonderful community. The responses of constituents will play a role in the development of a solid overview as to where the most pressing issues lie. This will be the springboard for what I will address, develop and focus on. I am committed to respond to the people needs of our community and what they regard as priorities. I will not make assumptions regarding what I ‘think’ they want. which we all benefit. What would you like to have achieved at the end of your term? My legacy at the conclusion of my term is primarily that Weipa is a better town to live, work, and raise our kids. I would like to have the satisfaction of introducing established processes that will continue to promote and validate all stakeholders involved with the advancement of this great community. Why should people vote for you? That’s an interesting question. I figure people will vote for the person they feel will do the best job in the interests of the town and its future. If elected, I will do the very best job that I can do. I do not have any hidden agendas and I have been open and honest from the start. As many residents of Weipa will attest, I have contributed and volunteered my own time, efforts and energy to many charity and fundraising events. I have also demonstrated a commitment to the promotion of cultural and youth events and activities during my time in Weipa. In every instance I have done the very best that I was capable of doing to support those in need. Some such events have been: several “Rockwiz” evenings to raise funds for the students of the Western Cape College; Vibe Alive; MADD night; charity events in aid of breast cancer and its survivors. In addition, I have organised and hosted two Youth Balls and have played an active role in planning and implementing community NAIDOC week events for several years running. I have supported and hosted the Pebbles fund raising evening in 2013 at their request. I also doorknocked and actively engaged the residents of Weipa when addressing the situation of the absence of curbing and channelling in the Rocky Point area. As people are aware, I am a

person of action. I “do” when there is a need - rather than just “talk” about it, or wait for someone else to begin. There is a saying; ‘the best indicator of future behaviour is past behaviour’. Consideration of this phrase provides firm indications of the type of chairperson I will be: active, enthusiastic, responsive, flexible and committed. I am prepared to step up and work hard for this town and its wonderful people. My role as Chairperson will provide me with access to like-minded people and a great community that will support me as I strive to achieve goals that will benefit Weipa long into the future. As also being the manager of the Western Cape Bulletin I speak to a lot of the community and am aware of a lot of the issues in Weipa. Policies and/or specific issues you would address if elected: I will work towards the future growth of our town, diversification of our local economy, improved health services and Council normalisation. I will also work on the continuation of upgrading our playgrounds and the installation of the exercise stations along the bike paths. Ensure that Andoom Oval continues to progress towards the finished product of the Andoom Oval master plan. The opening of the Bertiehaugh Road for better access to the northern sector of the Cape which will help with increased tourism to the town. Help create other industries to help support the town. I will continue to work for discounted boat trailer registration. What would you like to have achieved at the end of your term: I would like to mark my achievements by having made

Background I FINISHED school and headed to sea with the Australian Navy. Following that I back packed around Australia and the world for three or four years. During this time I managed to work it out the hard way – it was better to own the shovels than to actually use one. Thus began a long career of self-employment. I love the challenges of taking on new ventures. I moved to Weipa in 1994 and carried on my long-running association with the Coast Guard by becoming a founding member of the then Air Sea Rescue here in Weipa. Twenty years on I am still active in Marine Rescue. Those of you that have been around for awhile will know I am not backward in speaking up for things that are not right in town. I have been involved with the town’s disaster management for many years and continue to do so. I also hold a seat on the board for Marine Rescue in Queensland and have held that position for the past 16 years. I am the recipient of the National Medal and a bravery award. Policies and/or specific issues you would address if elected: • Seek progress on a new boat ramp and parking area. • Secure funding for a loop road to the PDR from Weipa. • Improve wet weather protection

G’DAY there punters of Weipa, my name is Kevin Harvey, and I have lived and worked in this pretty little part of Australia for two years now. I have worked and travelled the world during my extensive time in the Australian Military. After leaving the army I drove road trains in Western Australia, managed a country pub in Victoria with my wife, and was a contract shooter for feral animals back in Western Australia. Coming to Weipa has been one of my best decisions. The potential Weipa has to offer anyone willing to make a go of it. I see potential in this town. The tourist industry, without taking Weipa’s remote locality away, is here, and there is the opportunity for people in Weipa to do develop charter fishing tours, licence hunting trips (feral pigs) organised 4WD tours and camping. Many southerners talk about coming to the Cape but the thought of driving here is very daunting to many, so organised packaged flights is what they look a. With tourism comes the potential to develop the town even more with a properly managed tourist centre. How many out there have

been asked by tourist how they can get to places around the Cape or just around town, while at the same time complaining about the lack of everything in town. They call Weipa a “mining town” governed by the mining giant Rio Tinto Alcan, but look at what happened to Gove. Private enterprise here in Weipa needs to be developed properly so the town can dictate its own future. If I am elected as a committee member, I will work hard to make it happen for people and assist them with the business venture they are keen on doing. Weipa can only grow with the amount of building going on at the moment, but a lot of the contractors are FIFO, and I know a lot of the builders who call Weipa home are not being used for some of the projects happening at the moment. We need to change that. If we have what is required for a building project here in town then let’s use the local builders; it keeps the money here and helps the local economy and creates more jobs for the town. Once again, if I am elected I will work hard along with the other members of WTA to make this happen. We also need to have more land released by RTA to help with the growth that will happen in the future. We have infrastructure i.e. the Old Hospital that could be developed for a number of things. But at the moment it is just an empty wasted building. If we work hand-in-hand with RTA, Weipa can go forward, a town that in the future would be the envy of a lot of larger towns down south. But that can only happen if the people in Weipa want it happen. I encourage all the registered voters of Weipa on February 22 to get to the polling booth and make your vote count.

CANDIDATE PROFILES  from page 7 I understand the uniqueness of our community and I think we need to look at how we can add value to our community i.e. improving infrastructure and better utilisation of facilities such as the cyclone shelter and other unoccupied buildings. I’ve watched my predecessors fight for what they thought was ‘big ticket’ issues i.e. “Normalisation”. These same predecessors have come and gone yet this issue is still on the table and it won’t happen in my time either. I’m interested in addressing Weipa’s economic future and what a ‘standalone’ Weipa has to offer. If the people of Weipa want normalisation we need to seriously look at diversifying our economy. Is there an economic plan? I think these are important issues, but I also think we should be working on concrete gains and goals that are achievable. I don’t want to promise anyone something I cannot deliver. However, I would like to pursue funding and ways to generate our own source of revenue to achieve some of the goals outlined in the Weipa Community Plan. The Community Plan was developed in 2012 by the people of Weipa. This would be a good starting point, we don’t have to re-invent the wheel, but we need the community to be involved. I’m also keen to look at the tourism market in and around Weipa. I believe this avenue has potential to be developed, but it needs to be managed and co-ordinated, and could start with the establishment of a “Visitor Information Centre”. Why should people vote for you? If people vote for me what they’ll get is someone who will work through issues to achieve practical and realistic solutions, and raise issues that are important to people. I have experience of working in challenging environments, having worked in Indigenous communities, disability services in remote areas, and with bureaucracy. I’m tenacious and like to get to the bottom of issues. I don’t confess to know what the issues or priorities are for Weipa, but I’d like to be given an opportunity to

review them and also find out what the people of Weipa consider to be the priorities.

Background Here is just a tiny snippet. You are welcome to friend me on facebook if you would like see more. In 1980, when I partnered with a friend to do a joint venture in a fruit and veg shop in Mareeba. Soon after that I bought my first a block of land near Cooktown - I had just turned 17. I fell in love with the area, so decided to move there and build a house from scratch. There was no power on the block. I remember digging the dunny with a crow bar and a Golden Circle pineapple tin. It was big enough to be a tourist attraction! We grew small crops to supply the local hotels in Cooktown. Soon after my second child Emily was born we headed south. We ended up out west on a huge cotton farm, on the border between Talwood in Queensland, and Boomi in NSW. Like Weipa, the community spirit I experienced in these two towns was amazing. I had the opportunity to get involved with both towns, acting as secretary for the CWA and P&C, as well becoming an enthusiastic community member. At times it was a bit like being the bridge between the two towns. When the blue light disco started in Talwood the Police got all the Boomi kids there in the paddy wagon. They would stop off at my house on the way for a sausage sizzle. Another way I got involved with the community was through doing linen parties. It’s something I still enjoy, and since moving to Weipa in 2012 I have had the pleasure of doing over 60 parties. It has been a

fantastic way to meet people from all walks of life, in their own homes, and learn about local issues - what is really needed in town. When I go to do these parties I hear about what would make Weipa a better place to live. Some of the things are so basic yet would make a huge difference. Since I have been campaigning for election as a member of the Weipa Town Authority there have been many people come and talk to me about the things that they are passionate about. There is a lot of synergy between us all to get together and make it happen. My vision for the future is exciting. Along with my modern financial education I am positive we can move forwards and have the improvements we need both big and small - to keep Weipa a happy and healthy place to live.

The believers themselves would not have known what they were saying as they were Galileans, but their hearers would tell them what they were saying! Others who did not recognise any of the language said that the believers were drunk. When you look at it though, God had reversed the curse of the many languages given at the Tower of Babel. Winning Valentine’s poem THE Weipa Bowls Club ran a Valentine’s Day competition for romantic poets, challenging the hopeless, and not-so-hopeless local romantics to pen a love poem. With some terriﬁc prizes on offer plenty of poets came out of the woodwork, however Brett Tyrrell’s poem below was judged the winning entry.



WELL, the mighty Weipa wet has certainly descended upon us well and truly this year and is causing a few wet backsides and some localised flooding on the course. The competition golf, which was supposed to kick-off on February 9, was washed out. However on Sunday, February 16 a dozen or so bravehearts donned the flippers, and despite a couple of heavy scuds passing through the area the 18-holes were negotiated without too much trouble. Definitely a good trial run for the upcoming Gumboot Classic. The wet and heavy conditions didn’t deter the club captain Bretto Elms, who fired a very creditable gross 76 off the stick for a 66 nett round - well done. Runner-up on a countback was Pete Ross, while Dasha Holmquest took out the third prize. Nearest the pin on the ninth hole was Clarkey and Taxi Mick was the closest on the 18th hole. Thanks to Ash Wilkinson for his sponsorship for the day as well as his fine company while he has resided in Weipa. Ash is off back to the big smoke and will be missed as a good bloke to have around the club. Ash’s regular playing gaggle will be glad to see the back of him and wouldn’t have minded if he had left some of winnings behind. This Sunday, February 23 the prestigous Gumboot Classic will be contested. Sun, rain or snow the show will go on. Only thunderstorms with lightning or a course closure due to flooding will halt the event. Cape York rugby league expected to thrive in 2014 Alf Wilson story

GOVERNING bodies for both Cape York Senior and Junior Rugby League’s held their Annual General Meetings last week and have formed strong committees for the 2014 season. Weipa-based QRL Northern Division Game Development Ofﬁcer Karl Adams told the Bully that the dates for the season openings had been discussed and decided upon. “Last week we had both the Central Cape Suns Junior Rugby League AGM and the Rugby League Cape York AGM. Everything went well, and both Leagues have strong committee’s formed,” he said. Mr Adams said CCSJRL was looking to kick-off on May 8, with sign-on days on April 29 and May 1. “The Weipa Wet Season Competition will kick-off on March 8, with two new teams entering,” Mr Adams said. Cairns based Regional Coordinator David Maiden travelled to Weipa for the meetings. The CCSJRL Committee is: president - Seamus Gay, vice president - Garreth Smith, Secretary - Liz Smith, treasurer - Talei Barba and

registrar - Sarina Adams. The RLCY senior committee consists of president - Angela Lui, vice president - Patrick Wasiu, secretary - Loretta Glanville and treasurer - Lency Adidi. New sides in the Wet Season competition look like being Napranum Twal, and Goodline Linebreakers. With such dedicated and experienced administrators on the two committees, rugby league on western Cape York can be expected to thrive in the new season. Mr Adams said the Cape Cluster competition was also discussed at the AGMs, including a different composition which had previously been touted in the Bully. “The Cape Cluster season will be split into two divisions this year, with the Northern Cluster having (NPA, Weipa, Napranum, Lockhart River and Aurukun), and the Southern Cluster (Coen, Pormpuraaw, Kowanyama, Hope Vale, Cooktown, and possibly Laura),” Mr Adams said. Mr Adams said the Cluster Comp would commence in May, depending on road conditions.

cast. The Barra was caught on a Squid Vicious (the colour is a secret) on a 5/0 jig using 20lb braid and 40lb leader. How about Lesa catching her first ever Barra and straight into the “Metre Club” – that’s how it’s done! No, I haven’t got any Squid Vicious left but they are on their way. The Prawn are starting to get big enough to use as bait (another month should see them perfect) and the Grunter (Javelin fish) are biting their heads off, as the saying goes. The bigger fish are a bit more partial to fresh slab bait like Herring, Mullet or Gar, but make sure you scale and boneout the fillets, there are a bit like me – they don’t like the bones. There are plenty of places to try like Evans Landing, Gonbung, Mission River Bridge, Red Beach to name a few or up at Mapoon, and if you have access to a boat the fishing spots are endless. There hasn’t been too much action outside with the storms about lately but if you get a chance head on down to Boyds Bay or Pera as I am sure the fishing will be excellent. Do take care however as there is a lot of flotsam about such as trees and ghost nets. Mackerel should be on the prowl so a trolled Wolfie or Queenie should be on the cards.

It’s great to be back in Weipa enjoying the laid-back lifestyle. As most would know I left for about a year and couldn’t stand the pace on the outside world. Well, I’m back and loving it, slotted into my old role at Tackle World, and now back on the keyboard telling all the lies I can about the fishing in the area. Lots of luck to China, who as most would know is starting a new adventure in his life. The rainy season has been going great and I hope it continues for a few more weeks. The rain has really cleaned up the creeks and rivers. Water was a chocolate to foggy brown colour a few weeks ago and now it’s running very clean, even the fish have opened their eyes for the first time in weeks. We probably need another 20 inches to guarantee a bumper season. Some people are just lucky Lesa Williams, a recent arrival to Weipa, thought she would give fishing a bit of a go and as she had never done it before asked Shane from the shop for a bit of help. As you can see by the photo she must have got “the good oil” landing this one metre Barra off the beach at the Mission River Bridge. Shane hadn’t even got his lure wet as Lesa hooked the Barra on the first

LAST weekend, the Cape York Motorcycle Club hosted two representatives from Motorcycling Queensland who put sixteen members through various officials’ courses. The courses offered included a range of positions varying from Scrutineers and Marshals to Clerk of Course and Stewards. With racing planned to kick off in May, it was essential from our clubs point of view to have as many ofﬁcials as possible. This way we can ensure a safer, smoother and overall a more professional race series,

The Cape York Motorcycle Club would love to thank Alisha and Peter Bell for travelling to Weipa to present this course. We’d also like to thank Rod Wilson for the amount of work involved in making the weekend happen and a huge thanks to The Albatross Bay Resort for all their help and hospitality over the three days. Without these guys, the event just wouldn’t have been possible. This weekend our season

officially kicks off with the National Come and Try day. The club will open the track on Saturday from 7am to anyone with a motorbike to come along and have a go at motocross. The best part, this weekend is totally FREE for all beginners and a chance to receive a free Recreational or discounted Race license. This is the perfect chance to have a ride on the track and have a chat about all things motorbikes. If you have always wanted to try motocross there is no better opportunity than this. Our laid back atmosphere amongst riders makes it really

easy to jump on and have a go. So anyone with a bike I would encourage you to get out and try our great sport. This weekend kick starts an action-packed year for the motocross club. With A race series, many practice and coaching days and a two day Y-aim riding school in 2014, there is plenty to keep riders busy.
