Brick by Brick

This summer, The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum are collaborating to bring the International LEGO® brick art exhibition ‘Brick by Brick’ to Doncaster. Until 2 September, both city centre venues will be displaying different artworks by 18 artists, designers and photographers from around the world who use LEGO® bricks as their medium or inspiration.

Taking this simple plastic construction block as their starting point, these artists have created stunning, thought provoking and often humorous artworks which will appeal to art enthusiasts and LEGO® fans alike.

Alongside the wide range of artworks on display, visitors to The Point and Danum Gallery, Library and Museum will also be able to try their hand at creating their own construction brick artworks with a LEGO® graffiti wall, build tables and a selection of games and competitions.

Participating artists are: Agabag, AME 72, Cole Blaq, Michael Brennand-Wood, Janet Curley Cannon, Eat My Bricks, Valentino Fialdini, Jason Freeny, Hannah Gibson, David Hughes, The Little Artists, Little Big Art, Ekow Nimako, James Paterson, Jonathan Rolph. Samsofy, David Turner and Zino.

An authentic voice

It sometimes takes an outsider to explain what makes a place you know very well so special. Doncaster-born documentary film maker and multi media specialist Wayne Sables has lived in and around Yorkshire’s newest city all his life. His latest film commission, Stories from Doncaster - funded by Doncaster Council in conjunction with the UK Shared Prosperity Fund - aims to tell the city’s story using only the authentic sounds and experiences of real people. Their stories will form part of a major projection mapping project that will be unveiled later this year as it is screened on some of Doncaster’s most iconic buildings.

Wayne was adamant from the start, however, that the piece would not be about dignitaries and civic leaders but about shop keepers, road workers, dinner ladies, health workers, young people, old people, sport fans and artists - the whole plethora of Doncaster people who together make a great city a thriving community.

New community space

Did you know Leeds Kirkgate Market have a brand-new community space on Row J? The area is situated close to the Market Kitchen and features a huge mural depicting a ‘journey’ around famous locations in the city centre.

The community space will be brought to life with two very exciting FREE family friendly activities in the Summer holidays. Join them on Saturday 29 July from 11am to 3pm where there will be an inflatable activity centre and again on Saturday 26 August from 11am to 3pm to enjoy an interactive laser run game.
