SS Flooring
Something for everyone From carpet to laminate and tiles to hard wood, whatever your requirements, Layers Flooring have an enormous range of options for you to consider. Iith a huge choice of flooring options to suit all tastes and budgets, as well as a friendly, professional service that has earned them a solid reputation, it’s little wonder that Layers Flooring customers are lining up to sing the company’s praises. Happy to share their first-class experience are David and Barbara Arnold of Dronfield Woodhouse, who chose Layers to supply and fit new vinyl flooring in their kitchen and dining room. Mr and Mrs Arnold said: “We first chose Layers eight years ago when they fitted our kitchen with vinyl flooring. We initially went to them because they are a local firm and so we thought we would give them a try. They were in the Civic Centre back then and we used to pass them while out shopping. “Having been very happy with the service, when we decided to have vinyl fitted in the dining room too, we used Layers again. The dining room used to be carpeted but now it is more easily accessible for David, who uses a wheeled walker, as it is all one level and totally flat. “When we visited the shop to enquire about the flooring, we felt very looked after. They got a chair for David and moved things
W
around in the shop to make it more easily accessible for him. “We had something quite specific in mind and were shown lots of samples. The choice was great and they explained about the different types of vinyl, helping us to reach the right decision. After we had chosen, they said it could be done within two weeks and were happy to fit it at a convenient time for us. “In the meantime, a man came round to measure the room and he brought samples so we could double check we were completely happy with our choice. “Then when the fitter arrived a few days later we recognised each other as he was the one who had fitted our kitchen flooring eight years ago. He placed plywood down in the dining room – as he had done previously with the kitchen – before laying the flooring so it was nice and smooth. The vinyl is also very thick so it looks just like real wooden floorboards. “We were so impressed with the fitter’s workmanship; he was brilliant. We still can’t
get our head around how he fitted the flooring as it was all in one piece but it’s incredibly neat – especially around the radiator pipes. He also pulled out the fridge, freezer and washer and put them back into place with no trouble. All in under two hours. “He was so impressed with his handiwork he even asked us if he could take a photograph for his portfolio! “If anybody asks us where to get new flooring, we would definitely recommend Layers. And in the future when we need new carpets we’ll certainly be popping up there.” Layers Flooring 55 Highfield Road, Hilltop Dronfield S18 1UW Tel: 01246 292969 Branch also at: 46 Sandygate Road, Crosspool Sheffield S10 5RY Tel: 0114 266 9888 Roll end centre at: 10 Hicks Street, Neepsend, Sheffield S3 8BL Tel: 0114 278 1514

collection with a strong core of luxury essentials, their distinctive lines enable the discerning clientele to discover new ideas, new styles and new designers. Goat is a truly British brand, established by founder and designer Jane Lewis in 2001. The label now synonymous with understated luxury has developed into a full ready-to-wear collection. Signature luxury knits have been complemented by equally recognisable separates, dresses and outerwear. Goat clothing is created for real women, who multitask as intrinsically as breathing, and who want to look and feel their best without fuss or ostentation. It comes as no surprise that Goat’s discreet celebrity following epitomises the modern successful woman: hard working, at the top of her game, effortlessly stylish. Victoria Beckham, Lana del Rey, Gwyneth Paltrow and The Duchess of Cambridge are among the brand’s quiet celebrity clientele. The key to Goat’s success is its self-assured brand identity; its ‘handwriting’. Goat represents understated elegance for stylish, discerning women. Each piece is individually tailored using only the finest materials. Crafted to the highest standards, Goat clothing has fast become the go-to brand for stylish investment pieces which truly endure, thanks to classic tailoring, attention to detail and luxurious materials. Classic silhouettes and wardrobe staples are elevated above the conventional by clever colour palettes and inspired little touches. British style is characterised by its diversity, by its freedom. Goat has filled a real niche – classic pieces with universal appeal, but enough flair in the details to hang comfortably in the wardrobes of women whose style demands a little something out of the ordinary.

Add some luxury Soothe the stresses of the day by jumping into your very own hot tub. here are few more relaxing experiences than slipping into a hot tub at the end of a hard day. While you may currently reserve these luxurious opportunities for the gym or day spa, imagine being able to step out of your back door right into one of the bubbly havens. Premier Spas in Chesterfield allows you to do just that. Since 2004, brothers Simon and Martyn Watkin have sold more than 1,000 premium hot tubs to people in Derbyshire and beyond. Their purpose-built indoor showroom on Storforth Lane displays nine genuine Jacuzzi models – the original inventor of the hot tub, and the industry’s most well-known brand. They have 35 models to choose from, so you’re sure to find the right one for your needs and budget. “We are very much of the philosophy that if you buy cheap, you buy twice,” says Martyn. “The market is currently full of cheap
T

copies that simply do not compare to Jacuzzi. They can have higher running costs, insufficient water filtration, poor hydrotherapy jets, little or no warranty and very bad build quality that can be dangerous. They tend to last only a few years if you are lucky.” But Premier Spas’ high quality doesn’t mean high prices. The efficient Jacuzzi system has an average running cost of just £1 per day and the summer sale – with thousands of pounds off selected models – means the initial cost may also be much less than you think. The self-cleaning hot tubs also require very little maintenance. 15 minutes a week is all it takes to add water treatment products and top up the water, and as they keep themselves up to temperature, they are ready for you to pop the lid off any time you fancy a massage. If you’re still unsure, why not book a wet test at the showroom to see just how much you can enjoy the Jacuzzis? These private appointments allow you to try out the hot tubs to find one that best suits you, and receive expert advice from
Simon and Martyn while you’re there. The brothers’ dedication to excellent customer service, which everyone who steps through the door will experience, was recognised last year when they won Jacuzzi’s ‘best customer service’ award for the whole of the UK, an accolade of which they are very proud. Whether you’re looking for a relaxing addition to your home, the ultimate way to entertain your guests, or something for all the family to enjoy, Premier Spas have the answer. Call 01246 201301, visit www.premierspas.uk.com or pop into the showroom for more information. Premier Spas Storforth Lane Chesterfield, S40 2TU Tel: 01246 201301 www.premierspas.uk.com

Someone to talk to It doesn’t matter who you are, how you feel or what has happened, Samaritans are there to listen. Words: Fiona Barber
o touch another person’s life when it really matters, by lending a sympathetic ear is a rare gift. If you think you have the time to listen to someone in despair or distress, Samaritans needs you to volunteer Samaritans is a confidential, 24-hour listening service that offers a calm, caring voice at the other end of the phone. And for anyone who is lonely, in despair or going through a tough time, having someone to talk to can make all the difference. It doesn’t matter who you are, how you feel, or what has happened. If you feel that things are getting to you, Samaritans are there to listen. Last year, almost 18,000 pleas for help made their way to a small building in Rose Hill, Chesterfield – the former home to the local branch of Samaritans, which has now moved to a more spacious and disabledfriendly venue on Saltergate. The new venue was recently officially opened by The Duke and Duchess of Devonshire – The Duchess is also the patron of the branch. Local Samaritans listener Lin Rumsey says the new building is much bigger and will make delivering their services much easier.
T
SOUTHSIDE 16
“The new office is all on one level, which means we can offer disabled access to our clients and volunteers. There is also a car park and rooms for onsite training. Before we had to rent premises for meetings or training. Now everything is in one place it has made the whole thing much better and is saving us money.” The central room of the venue is a workspace dedicated to the volunteers, with phone stations and computers, to reply to any email or texts that come in. Lin says: “People often think Samaritans is just for those who are feeling suicidal, but we support anybody who is in despair or distress, which can include suicidal thoughts, feeling lonely, relationship breakdowns, financial trouble, mental health issues, drugs and alcohol, and homelessness.” Samaritans is a completely anonymous lifeline for people who are struggling to access mental health services or for those who require help at night, when most support services are closed. However, Samaritans is not an advice line – volunteers simply listen and give people someone to talk to during a time of need. As well as being able to call text or email, the Chesterfield office also offers face-to-face support between 10am-10pm, providing a volunteer is available. Samaritans could not function without its dedicated team of volunteers, which is why they are always on the look-out for new recruits. Lin has worked at Samaritans for over five years and she witnesses first-hand the lifechanging work they do – but she has also seen the number of volunteers fall over the years. “Volunteers do not need any particular experience or qualifications to work at
Samaritans – you just need to be empathetic, non-judgemental and willing to listen,” says Lin. “You never know what will be on the other end of the phone, so an open mind and a real desire to make a difference goes a long way.” The centre holds information evenings so people can drop in and find out more about volunteering. To ensure new volunteers are fully prepared they receive six weeks of free training and are shadowed by a mentor when they start work. Lin says the team includes people of many different ages, from all walks of life. “We each bring something different with our unique experiences and knowledge and we all support one another and receive fantastic support as a branch too.” Samaritans is always in need of new listening volunteers and people to help at the shop on West Bars and with outreach work at Sudbury Prison. The next information and recruitment evening will take place on 16 July at 7.30pm at 121 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NH. If you are interested in volunteering, contact Tracey on 07769 299501. If you require support from Samaritans you can visit them at 121 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NH or phone 08457 909090. Samaritans 121 Saltergate, Chesterfield, S40 1NH Tel: 08457 909090

Record breakers A bigger-than-ever turnout ensured that the 2015 Westside and Southside Restaurant Awards was our best to date. But who came out on top? Words: Fiona Barber & Phoebe Seymour Photography: Mark Rodgers ever mind the Oscars or the Baftas… they’ve got nothing on the 2015 Westside and Southside Restaurant Awards – truly this year’s most glamorous bash. OK, so Kim and Kanye didn’t make an appearance, but the great and good of Sheffield and North Derbyshire’s dining scene did, joining together for an evening of fun and celebration at Baldwins Omega. For a true taste of the finest dining out locations across the region, our Restaurant Awards has become an unmissable night out. This is the event that brings together the best venues of the last 12 months, in a celebration of the region’s rich and varied culinary hot spots. In 2015 our annual awards night was bigger and better than ever, with representatives from over 30 restaurants, cafes, hotels and bistros across Sheffield and North Derbyshire packing the banqueting hall to hear the results of our eagerlyanticipated search for the best dining venues. Picking up the ultimate prize as our Restaurant of the Year was The Samuel Fox Country Inn in Bradwell. It was a double celebration for this hugely impressive country pub at the awards, having won the Best Pub Food accolade earlier in the evening. The Samuel Fox has set superlative standards in recent years, with a variety of real ales, over 40 wines, an indulgent sevencourse tasting menu, an a la carte menu and a smattering of pub classics too. Having featured in the Michelin, Good Food and AA guides, this was the venue that managed to tick all our judges’ boxes. The competition was tougher than ever and choosing the winners in all categories was
N
no easy task.We were grateful to two independent guest judges, reader Kirsten Howells and chairman of Lyceum Theatre David Heugh, for their help with the decision making. The event itself was our biggest yet, with over 220 guests and hopefuls creating an electric atmosphere as an excellent fivecourse meal was interspersed with 13 awards. Food-lover David hosted the event, and joining him on stage to hand out the awards were Kirsten and Westside publishing manager Sam Brown. Joint managing directors Martin Edwards and John Murphy presented the Restaurant of the Year award and were joined on stage by James Northard from event sponsors The Austin’s Group, specialists
in wine, spirits and craft beer. Our special thanks go to Fran O’Neill of The Austin’s Group, who helped give the evening a joyous feel by providing excellent drinks throughout the evening. We started in style with a celebratory taste of Enrico Bedin Prosecco, the perfect welcoming fizz. Fran specially selected one white wine, Long Tail Chenin Blanc, and one red, Penny Lane Pinot Noir, to match the menu. All agreed that Fran’s choices and delicious food from the everconsistent Baldwins, provided the perfect combination. Other highlights of the evening included Brocco on the Park, a Scandinavian-style boutique hotel and restaurant, being named as Best Newcomer. We were particularly pleased to see so many strong candidates for this award which proved, as managing editor Chris Wilson noted in his opening remarks, that there is definitely something new stirring in the local restaurant scene. We also threw a spotlight on the stars of tomorrow with our Young Chef of the Year Award. It is clear that with so many talented youngsters excelling in kitchens across the region, the future of dining out is in safe hands. Tom Alberts of the Tickled Trout in Barlow was a deserved winner in this category. Those who were unfortunate enough to miss the ceremony in person were still able to catch all the live action, courtesy of feature writers Fiona Barber and Phoebe Seymour, who instantly updated the @Westside_RMC Twitter feed as the winners were announced. Each restaurant represented on the night is a winner in our eyes, but there were only 13 prizes. Read on to find out who picked up the region’s most coveted awards…

Restaurant of the Year & Best Pub Samuel Fox Country Inn Following a refurbishment last year, chef and owner James Duckett has really put his stamp on The Samuel Fox Country Inn. Having learnt from the masters, cooking in two-Michelin-star establishments for famous names such as Gordon Ramsay and Albert Roux, it was only a matter of time before James’ own venture, The Samuel Fox Country Inn, emerged triumphant. James and his team’s expertise has produced delectable taster and a la carte menus and the restaurant was a clear winner for both Best Pub and Restaurant of the Year. After this fantastic double triumph, it’s no wonder their table was celebrating the loudest. “It’s amazing!” said James. “We just came for a good time, so we’re really humbled and surprised to be going away with not one, but two awards.”
Best Contemporary West 10 West 10 is no stranger to success, having won Best Contemporary, as well as Restaurant of the Year in 2014. Since West 10 opened 13 years ago, it’s been a staple of the Westside area. It is renowned, not only for its fine food, but for its excellent wine list. As well as winning Best Contemporary, West 10 was one of three restaurants shortlisted for restaurant of the year. Despite being a serial award winner, owner Jonny Higginbottom was surprised by the victory. “It was unexpected, especially with the strong competition we were up against, but we are thoroughly over the moon!”
Best Family Friendly Ceres This is the first time the café/French bistro has enjoyed a taste of success at the Restaurant Awards thanks to an ever-expanding menu, which combines British classics and French cuisine, great quality vegetarian dishes and the warmest of welcomes for diners of all ages. Co-owner Caroline and Jean Paul Strappazzon moved to Sheffield from France in 2000 to open a café and have built a loyal following over 15 years.

Best Café/Light Bite Made By Jonty Not only did Jonty Cork score a hat-trick at this year’s awards by winning the Best Café/Light Bite category for the third year in a row, but he was also celebrating five years in business on Sharrrow Vale Road. He said: “It’s amazing to win it for a third time.”
Best Oriental Patoo Thai Having won Best Newcomer in 2011 and Best Oriental last year, Patoo Thai has gone from strength to strength in the last few years. Now established as one of Sheffield’s favourite Thai restaurants, it blends authentic cuisine with beautiful décor and friendly staff. Owner Jariya Sancunakorn said: “The competition in this category has been tougher, but our business has improved and we always have lots of great customers.”
Best Indian Prithi Raj Prithi Raj’s outstanding service and consistently excellent food has secured the title of Best Indian restaurant for a second successful year. Owner and manager Mizan Rahman thanked his loyal customers and his talented chefs. He said: “We have had a fantastic response since we opened and it is good to know that the critics like us too.”
Best Italian Vito’s For sheer consistency at our Awards it is hard to match Vito’s. This welcoming traditional trattoria on South Road, Walkley has been a multi-award winner over the years, including being named our Readers’ Choice and also Best Family Friendly. “I feel fantastic,” he said. “Being named as Best Italian makes this a special night, not just for me but the whole team.”
Best Hotel Restaurant The Cavendish With stunning views of the Chatsworth Estate, dining areas that are exquisitely furnished throughout and immaculate service,The Cavendish has
been a Derbyshire favourite for many years. Assistant general manager Richard Palmer and restaurant manager Stuart Bond accepted the award and said it was a huge surprise. “This is fantastic, we were not expecting it.”
Best Newcomer Brocco On The Park This Scandinavian-style boutique hotel opened its doors last November and was a refreshing addition to both Sheffield’s food and hotel scene. Brocco’s kitchen offers something different in luxurious surroundings. Owner Tiina Carr said: “I was completely humbled and overwhelmed to have seen off such strong competition in this category.”
Best Night Out Cubana It has been a big year for Cubana, after moving last summer from their former premises on Trippet Lane to a much larger venue in Leopold Square. People have flocked in greater numbers for a winning combination of homemade tapas, salsa dancing and a non-stop party atmosphere. Adrian Bagnoli, part-owner of Cubana, said: “I’m so pleased to have won because ‘best night out’ encompasses everything: music, food, dance and that’s what we wanted to create.”
Best Young Chef Tom Alberts, The Tickled Trout At just 22 sous chef Tom Alberts is cooking up a storm. He was nominated by Tickled Trout owner Chris Mapp who said: “Not only does he respond well to pressure and gives creative input into new dishes, he understands the business inside out and is meticulous at costing all the menus.”
Readers’ Choice Award The Tickled Trout Owner of Barlow’s fabulous Tickled Trout, Chris Mapp, was delighted to win the approval of Westside and Southsidereaders. “We’ve come a long way to make it something quite special and we feel ecstatic to have won. I’m immensely proud of my team and I couldn’t have done it without the support of them, my partner and family.”

SS Eating Out
The taste of tradition Homemade dishes, generous portions and a friendly welcome make The Albert Inn a great northern pub.
What we ate:
Words: Phoebe Seymour rom the Henderson’s Relish on the table to the cosy fireplaces and old-fashioned ale tankards hanging above the bar, it’s safe to say I’m in a traditional pub somewhere in or near Sheffield. The Albert Inn in Woodthorpe, Chesterfield, has all the lagers, local beers and typical pub grub us northern Brits have come to love, as well as a specials menu with slightly more adventurous dishes such as Chinese chicken curry. If you do happen to get a touch of déjà vu, it may be because until recently, owners Gill Weaver and Stephen Lee also ran The Bridge Inn at Ridgeway. Gill and Stephen have 27 years of experience in the industry including running London pubs. In an era where many chain pubs serve pre-cooked food, zapped in the microwave, it’s great to see the word ‘homemade’ on several dishes listed in the menu. It turns out that Gill is also the chef at The Albert Inn, but is more than happy to pop out of the kitchen for a chat. She recommends the rabbit casserole to my dining partner and I order a classic homemade meat and potato pie. Whilst waiting for our starters to arrive, I sip a glass of pinot grigio, which strikes a nice balance between fruity and dry, and my
F

companion has a dry chardonnay with a stronger flavour. The starters arrive and in keeping with the homemade British pub grub theme, I’ve gone for the homemade Yorkshire puddings. They are soft and covered in thick onion gravy with sprinklings of parsley. My companion chooses the lighter antipasti; a wooden board with chunks of lightly toasted bread, balsamic vinegar drizzled in a pot of olive oil with sundried tomatoes and a selection of salamis. There are plenty of pieces of tender meat in my companion’s rabbit casserole, which is served with herb-filled dumplings in a rich tomato sauce with hints of red wine. My meat and potato pie is an even more generous portion with piles of golden fried chips and mushy peas on the side. The crust is softened by the gravy and the meat effortlessly falls apart when cut into. Although we are both full, I manage to fit in a warm chocolate sponge complemented by a scoop of vanilla ice cream, whilst my dining partner had the Belgian chocolate cheesecake which is sweet and rich, but not sickly. So if you’re looking for a traditional pub setting, a classic menu and a selection of refreshing beers and lagers with value for money, The Albert Inn will no doubt satisfy your hunger.

From windows and doors to decorating and interior design, Arundel Joinery can help you achieve your dream home.
The ultimate package s one of Sheffield’s leading joinery manufacturers since 1985, you’ll no doubt have heard of Arundel Joinery. This family-run business has been providing specialist handcrafted windows and doors for more than 25 years and last year the brand expanded to include Arundel Interiors and Arundel Decorating. This ultimate trio provides clients with the complete package; from ideas and design, right through to completion of every aspect of your home. Director Danny Broomhead teamed up with skilled painter and decorator Lee Bellamy for the decorating, and Chris Headland (formerly Renaissance Joinery), an experienced professional who works from a separate workshop in Dronfield, for interiors. The three specialists, alongside the many talented designers and tradespeople within the company, provide customers with a
A
complete renovation service. If you employ Arundel to transform your home, a designer will meet with you to look at previous designs and discuss your ideas and needs. These are then used to create high quality, handcrafted pieces – exactly to your taste. Arundel Joinery’s dedicated team can recreate existing designs, or offer an alternative solution to suit you and your property. Whether you want them to plot the intricacies of a new staircase, door or window, their design services are offered as a combined extra so you won’t be surprised by any additional charges. They use traditional materials and tools to deliver high quality results and they make sure they use certified, sustainable suppliers of high quality soft and hardwoods. As a Yorkshire manufacturer of traditional and heritage products, they believe in providing superb design and exceptional precision-built quality.
Not only do they focus on great quality, but Arundel Joinery have an eye on the environment too. All of their timber is FSC (Forest Stewardship Council) approved and their suppliers are members of the Timber Trade Federation. This means that all of their wood comes straight from a certified forest and the supply chain has not been broken. Some timber may need to be supplied from forests outside of the UK, and they ensure that they choose suppliers to supply wood from certified and legal managed forests. Also if you have uPVC windows and doors, they will dispose of your old ones at a licensed site. Although Arundel Joinery is a Sheffieldbased company, their specialist work has become so well-known they get offered contracts in London too. Danny says: “The businesses in London doing what we do charge a fortune and those that are cheaper don’t offer the quality we do.” Despite demand elsewhere, their roots are still very much in Sheffield and their primary focus remains simple – to provide bespoke products and a fantastic service. Bespoke kitchen and bedroom design and project management “We would like to compliment you upon your excellent work in perfectly transforming our kitchen. Your team, headed by Dan, were all professional, polite, courteous, thoughtful and kind - from the outset of the project right through to the end. Your relaxed and confident manner reassured us, and the work was completed seamlessly without any stress or worry. Although the quality of products and craftmanship were to the very highest standards, the cost was extremely competitive. We would have no hesitation in recommending you to our friends and family, or purchasing from you again. You were all nice genuine people and such a delight to work with. My wife and I would like to wish you all a very successful future."

Footgolf, a hybrid of golf and football, is available at Tapton Park Golf Course. Focus on the individual Anne Jones of Sheffield High Infant and Junior School. nne Jones first joined the school 20 years ago and has been Head Teacher of the Infant and Junior School, which teaches girls aged four to 11, for 13 years. Having first experienced Sheffield High School as a mum, she knows exactly what discerning parents expect. “We offer small class sizes, individual attention for each pupil, specialist music and sports teachers, an excellent partnership with parents, supervised care from 7.30am-6.15pm, close links with the senior school and a tailor-made curriculum. “Our current focus is to continue to promote thinking skills, resilience and independence of thought, and encourage our girls to become self-motivated learners. We have a strong emphasis on STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) subjects and encourage girls to enjoy these at a high level.

“One of the most rewarding aspects of the role is leading initiatives, working with staff to implement these, and then seeing the impact that they have on pupils’ learning. I really enjoy spending time talking with the girls and, of course, teaching. As we also have a Senior School for girls up to the age of 18, I love seeing how the girls progress after they leave the Juniors at 11 and the confident young women that they grow to become.
“I don’t really have a ‘typical’ day; I enjoy spending time meeting current and prospective pupils and parents, meeting staff and observing lessons, doing development planning and tracking pupil progress. I also teach for an hour each day. “In addition, there are meetings both within school and the local community and, as we are part of a group of schools (Girls’ Day School Trust), I travel to our head office in London and also to other schools within the group to share best practice and work together on joint initiatives. Our busy extra-curricular programme means that there are frequent sports matches and concerts to support. To arrange a visit, telephone the admissions secretary on 0114 358 7602 or see www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk 10 Rutland Park, Sheffield, S10 2PE Tel: 0114 266 1435 www.sheffieldhighschool.org.uk

fter leaving Westbourne School, where he had been for almost nine years, Jonathon Clark started at St Peter and St Paul, a co-educational school for four to 11 year olds, in April this year. “Joining the school in the last term of this academic year has allowed me a ‘Head’s start’ to get to know the children, staff and parents. It’s been a unique opportunity to feel the heartbeat of the school and the values embodied in its pastoral care, which gives it the unique and exceptional family feel that struck me when I first visited. I aim to hit the ground running on 7 September! “The most enjoyable aspect of my job is the daily interaction with our happy, polite and confident children. ensure that all our children are inspired while feeling both safe and valued. I embrace the challenge of further developing our learning culture and academic rigour in the classroom and look forward to celebrating our many successes together. “We ensure every child fully embraces the multitude of enrichment activities and opportunities such a Young Shakespeare Day, World Book Day, Science Week, and the numerous history and culture days. “My plans for the future include creating new and exciting opportunities for our parents, as key stakeholders, to take a more active role in the life of the school. I also aim to empower our Year 5 and 6 children to play an increasingly active role as school ambassadors. “As well as encouraging our children to compete regionally and nationally in both music and sport, I plan to develop our forest school provision and external environment and facilities – we aim to have our own school chickens and for the children to look after them. Living the dream Head teacher Anne Camm always wanted to work in education and at Ashdell School she found her perfect job. rom the moment Anne Camm lined up her dolls as a child and pretended to be at the helm of a classroom, she knew she wanted to be a teacher. The pinnacle of the illustrious career that followed these childhood imaginings came seven years ago when she was appointed Headteacher of Ashdell School. It’s the little everyday things that make Anne look forward to work each morning. From the girls’ first small steps in Snowdrops – the school’s Pre-School division – to their graduation at the age of 11, the journey they take is a privilege to both witness and contribute to. When the girls leave, Anne and her staff don’t just say goodbye to them, but to the whole family. “It may sound strange,” she admits, “but one of the greatest achievements is knowing the parents are sad when their daughter leaves Ashdell – it means we’ve done our job well.” By building partnerships with parents and
F
operating an open-door policy, the girls, their families and the staff are invited to discuss ideas and concerns as they arise. “I encourage communication with parents because, between the ages of three and 11, the girls are in my care and I take that responsibility very seriously. I have a duty to the pupils and their parents to provide the very best education and I do everything I can to ensure that we deliver an exceptional learning experience that the girls will treasure for the rest of their lives.” As a family-orientated school, Ashdell encourages pupils to value, respect and look after their school family as they do their own. It is this family feel that cements their reputation as a caring, friendly and welcoming school. A huge variety of activities and learning opportunities, along with the ‘have a go’ attitude, ensures the girls leave Ashdell well equipped to make informed decisions on the path they will take next.
“We pride ourselves on keeping many of our traditions alive but we also take pride in the fact that we are embracing the 21st century. As such, my ambition is to keep the school moving forward, embracing modern technology and maintaining the many traditions Ashdell is recognised for.” Ashdell School & Snowdrops 266 Fulwood Road, Sheffield S10 3BL Tel: 0114 266 3835 www.ashdellprep.co.uk

Excellence brings growing demand John Hicks of Westbourne School and Pre-School, Sheffield. ohn Hicks has been at Westbourne School in Broomhill for 11 years, during which time he has seen many advancements. Originally a boys’ Preparatory School that moved to co-education, girls now make up 45 per cent of Westbourne’s population, creating a thriving co-ed environment where girls and boys function effectively together – as is the natural order of things. “I have seen the school go from strength to strength, particularly in academic achievement, and I am proud that the school is now regarded as one of the best in the region. “As more and more people have discovered the excellent all-round education that today’s Westbourne offers, demand for
J
places has increased dramatically. I am delighted to have been closely involved in the acquisition of three new buildings and a brand new Pre-School to accommodate the growing Westbourne population, which ranges from three to 16 years of age. “I was recently asked what a typical working day encompasses and what I enjoy about it… well, for me it’s the people at Westbourne and the interaction with them that I particularly enjoy - Meeting and greeting pupils, attending and hosting assemblies, briefing staff, meeting prospective parents, teaching Mathematics and chairing meetings. My day also involves undertaking administration tasks, working on strategic planning and moving forward with school development projects.” “The most enjoyable parts of my job are
seeing the children develop in confidence, sharing in their successes both personally and academically, and being able to lead the school forward and achieve our aims. “We are currently very close to a two form entry throughout the whole of Junior School and I look forward to seeing this to fruition. My ambition for the school is to be full in all year groups and to continue the enhancement of pupil achievement in academia, sport, drama and music.” Westbourne School and Pre-School 60 Westbourne Road, Broomhill, Sheffield S10 2QT Tel: 0114 266 0374 www.westbourneschool.co.uk

SING LOW D
ronfest, the local charity music event that keeps on giving, is back for its 16th year. And this time, it is bigger and better than ever with a cracking lineup featuring headliners Andy Fairweather Low and The Low Riders, and Nigel Clarke who found fame with 90s band Dodgy. The 17-act line-up will also include rising Sheffield-based stars such as pop-rock duo Rita Payne and female folk band Seven Tors. Taking place on Sheffield Road behind the Sheffield FC on Sunday 2 August from 12-11pm, festival organiser and local businessman John Aspinall is delighted to be welcoming such legendary headliners. “Andy Fairweather Low has been around for a long time. I saw him in Sheffield in 1969 with a band called Amen Corner,” says John. Andy Fairweather Low sang on famous Amen Corner singles such as Bend Me, Shape Me, as well as on many hit pop records for other major artists over the years. Now with the Low Riders, he recently opened two nights at Madison Square Garden for Eric Clapton’s 70th Nigel Clarke birthday celebration with a further six dates at the Albert Hall in May. Co-incidentally, Andy Fairweather Low celebrates his birthday during Dronfest which has led one Facebook user to comment: “Andy's been playing at Eric's birthday celebrations. I wonder if Eric will be at Andy's birthday gig on Sunday 2nd August at Dronfest?” Although this is merely speculation, watch this space. Younger adults are guaranteed to remember singer and guitarist Nigel Clarke for 90s chart-toppers Good Enough and Staying Out For The Summer with Britpop band Dodgy. Other fantastic acts include Vigilante, Mark Matthews and The One T’s, Ramble Gamble, Andy Morley and returning acts, Gonzo and Damon Downs. The event not only features some huge

Food-lovers will not be disappointed with take-away curries, Dutch pancakes, tea and cakes, a Victorian sweet stall, as well as an impressive hog roast and burgers served every year by Dore and Totley Golf Club’s former caterer Phil Siddall. Renowned Chesterfield salon Harley’s will also be on hand to style your hair. If you’re feeling lucky, there will even be a tombola with some fantastic prizes to be won, donated by Dronfest’s generous sponsors. “Dronfest is not just good for music, it’s a great day out for the whole family,” says John. “It provides an opportunity for local musicians to play to a wide audience and enables us to give money to a number of charities.” This year’s event will raise money for national charities St John’s Ambulance, Bluebell Wood Children’s Hospice, Sincere Support, as well as many local projects and charities including Dronfield Cardio Club and the 1890 Dronfield Squadron Air Training Corps. The Air Training cadets have also kindly volunteered to work as car parking stewards on the day. A number of charity stalls will also be at the festival to raise awareness. Charity Under The Stars, who attended last year, will be returning with a musical workshop for children with learning disabilities. The festival which originally started as a surprise silver wedding party for John’s wife Jackie has grown every year and has become one of the area’s biggest annual events. Since the first festival 15 years ago, which raised money for Motor Neurone Disease in
memory of John and Jackie’s friend who died from the condition at the age of 40, the festival has raised almost £50,000 for charities and groups. Last year’s total topped almost £9,500. John hopes the festival’s success and legacy will live on. Despite having lots of help from sons Dan, Tom and Ben over the years, John is keen to get a new generation of volunteers and coorganisers involved in the future. “We are in danger of having to stop this festival eventually because we’re getting older and it’s getting harder to do,” says John. “When I started it, I was 45 and all the friends that helped were a similar age. We’re now in our 60s and 70s and need new people to help this year and in years to come.” Many stall-holders return every year, not only because of the strong relationships they have built with festival organisers and visitors over the years, but because they share a similar charitable mentality to John. “Everybody knows everyone really well now. The stall-holders are very generous, but we don’t demand a certain amount from them to donate. If they are fair with us, we’re fair with them,” says John. John’s son Dan, who is helping to organise this year’s Dronfest, is keen to get visitors into the charitable festival spirit too. “Considering the strong line-up we have, its great value for money,” he says. “We want people from all over the region to come to the festival, but locals will benefit most because the majority of the money goes back into the community.” If you are interested in live music or events and would like to lend a hand, contact John Aspinall on 01246 236153 or 07770584287.

SS Chesterfield Champions
Peter Swallow, Chair of Destination Chesterfield, is delighted that a new MacMillan Cancer Centre is to be built in the town. t a recent Chesterfield Champions breakfast I was delighted to hear the news that a MacMillan Cancer Centre is to be built at Chesterfield Royal Hospital. This is a real feather in the cap for the town as it brings together the cancer care and treatment that is currently provided in different locations across the hospital site. There unfortunately can be few people in Chesterfield whose lives have not been blighted by this terrible disease, either via the effect on their own health, or the illness of family members or friends. Every year, 1,500 people in North and North East Derbyshire are told that they have cancer. Costing £8.9million, the new centre is relying on £2.5million of charitable donations to make it a reality. I have no doubt the MacMillan Cancer Centre will open in 2016 as planned as the generosity of Cestrefeldians is renowned. You simply have to look at other charitable causes in the area, large and small

– Ashgate Hospicecare, Fairplay, Cancer Relief UK, Kids ‘n’ Cancer and Chesterfield Fundraising Group for Cancer Research UK to name but a few, who all tirelessly fundraise and make a big difference to our community. Fundraising isn’t easy. It involves lots of time, energy and determination, often relying on the goodwill of volunteers, which is very much the case for the Chesterfield Fundraising Group for Cancer Research UK, which is entirely run and managed by volunteers. It recently received Fundraiser of the Year award at the Derbyshire Times Pride Awards, which just goes to show that the old adage ‘charity begins at home’ really does apply in Chesterfield. It is heartening to see the business community supporting charities, either through the fundraising efforts of their own staff or from the company as a whole. Most recently Franke Sissons hosted a fundraising
dinner dance which raised £1,250 for local cancer charities Nenna Kind and Ashgate Hospice care. Perhaps you could organise/hold a charity fundraising event of your own, in support of a worthwhile cause? It is this goodwill and camaraderie between both residents and businesses that makes Chesterfield such a friendly town, something visitors often remark on when they visit. We have a real’ in it together’ 0attitude that has enables us to weather storms and emerge stronger for it and the fact we have £1billion of development happening in the borough over the next ten years is testament to this.

Volvo’s new face Find the new Scandinavian seven-seater at Autoworld Chesterfield. he new XC90 will be the first Volvo to carry the company’s new more prominent iron mark, which has the iconic arrow elegantly aligned with the diagonal slash across the grille. Together with the T-shaped “Thor’s Hammer” DRL lights, the iron mark introduces an entirely new, distinctive and confident face for Volvo’s forthcoming generation of cars. The XC90’s larger bonnet with its new topography, the beltline and the sharpened shoulders connecting with the distinctive new rear lights are other important design signatures that will be mirrored across the range. To add more visual muscle from the sides, the XC90 comes with a range of wheel sizes up to 22 inches. “The overall impression, both exterior and interior, has a strong connection to the key elements of the Swedish lifestyle: the generous space, the celebration of light and the focus on wellbeing,” said Thomas

Ingenlath, Senior Vice President Design of Volvo Car Group. The XC90 is firm evidence of the Volvoby-Volvo strategy. Its outstanding combination of luxury, space, versatility, efficiency and safety will bring the SUV segment into a new dimension, just as the original XC90 achieved in 2002. The new XC90 offers a range of twolitre, four-cylinder Drive-E powertrains, all of which provide an outstanding combination of performance and fuel-efficiency. The top of the range XC90 Twin Engine, which combines a two-litre, four-cylinder supercharged and turbocharged petrol engine with an electric motor, offers an unrivalled combination of power and clean operation: around 400 horsepower with carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions of around 60 g/km (NEDC driving cycle). There is also the most comprehensive and technologically sophisticated standard safety package available in the automotive industry. It includes two world first safety
technologies: a run-off road protection package and auto brake at intersection capability. The XC90 is the first car in the world with technology that features automatic braking if the driver turns in front of an oncoming car. This is a common scenario at busy city crossings as well as on highways, where the speed limits are higher. The interior is the most luxurious to have been designed for a Volvo. The most striking feature is a tablet-like touch screen control console, which forms the heart of an all-new in-car control system. This system is virtually button free and represents an entirely new way for drivers to control their car and access a range of Internet-based products and services. It also helps create an interior that is modern, spacious and uncluttered. The genuine seven-seater features new, innovatively designed seats that also free up interior space for passengers both in the second and third seat rows. SOUTHSIDE 57
