Our infographic “How Technology has boosted eCommerce over the past 25 Years” visualises some of the major changes in the past two-and-a-half decades: 

The ‘Pre-Web’ period from 1987 to 1992: in 1987 the first electronic merchant account by Swreg enabled developers to sell their software online. ePages, then named d’ART Computer, was founded the same year. The company also became the German distributor for NeXT in 1989. The world’s first website was programmed by Tim Berners-Lee in 1991. The ‘Launch of the web’ from 1992 to 1997: the first commercial web browser, Mosaic, becomes Netscape in 1994. One year later Pierre Omidyar auctions the first product on eBay. Amazon is also launched in 1995. The ‘Dotcom Era’ from 1997 to 2002: in Germany Intershop makes a name for itself with an IPO at a valuation of 300 million Euro. DSL and Wi-Fi see their breakthrough in 1999. In 2002 already one out of every two internet users has purchased at least one item online. The ‘Rise of Google’ from 2002 to 2007: a project launched by Larry Page und Sergej Brin in 1995 at Stanford University later becomes Google. Online marketing becomes the driving force in eCommerce. The ‘Comeback of Apple’ from 2007 to 2012: iTunes, iPhone and iPad – innovations made by Apple revolutionise the markets.
