East Central’s varsity football Trojans, 9-2 in 2011, won their 20th EIAC championship and were ranked No. 4 in the final Class 4A state poll. The Trojans open their 2012 season Friday night against Richmond (4-6 last year) at Trojan Field in St. Leon.

Central head football coach Tim Behlmer has one thing to say about the trendy spread offenses that rely on speed and finesse to move the football these days.

“Our signature always has been physical football,” said the fifth-year Trojans boss, 34-11 in his two stints at the head of the program, including last year’s 9-2 conference championship season. “It really benefits us now that so many teams have gone to the spread. They’re not very comfortable when the come up against a power football team like ours. It’s a very difficult situation for them. That’s the way we like it. Until they roll me out to pasture, that’s the kind of football team we’re going to be.” That information should set well with the legions of Trojan fans out there, who’ve grown accustomed to Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference titles (20 and counting), sectional championships (15 all told) and consecutive winning seasons (22) when the leaves turn around St. Leon. “We always expect to have good seasons at East Central,” continued Behlmer, a member of the consolidation’s first graduating class in 1974 and former UC defensive end. “Our practices are very physical and we work at it yearround. We didn’t get this way by taking the easy way out.” According to the Indiana Football Digest, which again ranks the Trojans as the No. 4 team in Class 4A in its 2012 preseason poll – right where they left off last season – East Central returns five starters each on offense and defense from

the team that put up 354 points, while allowing 124, a year ago. While those figures may be accurate, so many players on EC’s roster of 100plus saw significant varsity action that few can actually be termed rookies. For instance, offensive line returnees Trevor Meyer (6’1”, 255, Sr.), at guard; Jon Tumlin (6’1”, 270, Sr.), at tackle; and Sam Weber (6’1”, 235, Sr.), the other tackle, will be joined by center Tim Berkemeier (6’0”, 240, Sr.) and newcomer Dylan Davis (5’10”, 250, Sr.) at guard. Berkemeier has seen plenty of playing time at defensive end, where he’ll double again, for the past two years. Incumbent tight end Nick Billman (6’1”, 215, Sr.) will be joined by All-State linebacker Payton Stonefield (6’0”, 188, Sr.), who also could line up at wideout in some situations – alongside senior playmaker Evan Fette (6’2”, 185), the team’s top receiver with 28 catches for 510 yards and eight TD last year. Back for what shapes up as another banner year is senior tailback Tyler Douthit (6’0”, 165), who earned All-State and league co-MVP honors after racking up 1,317 rush yards for a 6.7 average per carry and 15 touchdowns in 2011. Senior fullback’s Eric Wolfzorn (5’8”, 200) and Greg Bonomini (5’11”, 180) both saw action as point-of-attack blockers. It’s not like East Central doesn’t have

offensive balance, either. Senior quarterback Seth Federle, a wiry 5’11”, 155pound two-year veteran, completed 71 of 136 passes for 1,129 yards, 15 touchdowns and nine interceptions last season. At press time, he and classmate Tom Schroer (5’9”, 162) still were battling for the starting job. “We’re going to play a lot of people,” said Behlmer, citing another trait of East Central football. “All our kids are competing hard, and a lot of them are so close. They’ve been working their tails off. They deserve the chance.” EC’s array of offensive weaponry is equalled, if not slightly surpassed, by repeaters on what should be yet another formidable Trojan defense. All-State inside backer and county co-MVP Stonefield, also EC’s excellent long-snapper and a four-year starter, amassed a school record 227 defensive points last fall, breaking Brad Steinmetz’s career record with 100 solo stops. He’s also closing in on Bill Wade’s career defensive points mark (539 from 1991-94), with 401.5 entreing this season. Multi-talented Fette, the rangy outside backer with great anticipation and field vision, tallied 142.5 defensive points at outside backer in 2011. Back at the other outside linebacker spot is speedy, aggressive third-year man Brian Struewing (5’9”, 165), a hard hitter and standout wrestler. East Central’s five-man rotation on

the defensive front all return plenty of varsity experience. Tackles Nic Smith (6’1”, 220, Sr.) and Zach Streng (5’11”, 255, Sr.) will be flanked by ends Chance Schuh (6’0”, 201, Sr.), Berkemeier and Chad Cullen (6’2”, 210), in some combination. Secondary will feature a trio of firstyear senior starters, all of whom saw the field on Friday nights at times last year. They are cornerbacks Isaac Gorman (5’9”, 155) and Mitchell Baker (6’0”, 145), with safety Brian Frondorf (5’10”, 165). Newcomers who could boost the regulars include juniors T.J. Hamer (5’10”, 156) and Ryan Ferguson (5’9”, 165), at inside backer, and sophomore Hunter Kammer (6’0”, 136) at corner. But the best of them could be junior Cade Knueven (5’9”, 160), who’s pushing for See TROJANS, Page 13

Defense strength of ’Cats in 2012

Bob Hyle Harrison Press Contributor

F

riday night, Aug. 24, marks the beginning

of Kent McCullough’s second season as head coach of the Harrison Wildcats, but with the new Southwest Ohio Conference starting this year McCullough believes it’s almost like the first year all over again. “Last year I watched a lot of film to study the tendencies of the coaches we were going up against,” said McCullough. “I’m going to have to study more film again this year with all the new teams and coaches.” Five of the 10 teams from last year’s schedule are back this year, but three of those schools—Oak Hills, Edgewood, and Talawanda—have new coaches. One of those new coaches is Talawanda’s J.D. Vonderheide, who served as offensive coordinator for Harrison last season. Vonderheide and McCullough were college teammates at Miami University. McCullough is looking forward to the new league, particularly the rebirth of the Ross rivalry, but admits that the first three games of the season—non-conference opponents East Central, Oak Hills and Kings—are extremely important for Harbin ratings. “I hope to learn from the mistakes of last year,” said McCullough. “We don’t want to start off 0-3 again.” Those three games are particularly important because with seven conference games this year instead of five, it means that half the league opponents will lose a game in the final seven weeks of the season. Picking up Harbin points will be vital against schools that fellow SOC members don’t play. To do that, the Harrison defense—the unit that appears to be the strength of the team for now—needs to come out strong. The defensive line, in particular, is a strong unit thanks to the return of defensive ends Truman Gutapfel and Jon Schneider. “Truman is a man among boys right now,” said McCullough. “In our scrimmage with Withrow, Trotwood and Fairfield he whipped everyone. He’s in great shape and could go a full [48 minutes], but we’re not going to take that chance.” Gutapfel and Schneider are set to rotate series as right tackle on offense, but Schneider sprained a knee ligament in the first scrimmage and McCullough planned to hold him out of the final scrimmage against Loveland last Friday for precaution. Ben Kling and John Sittason will rotate at nose tackle similar to what Schneider and Gutapfel will do on offense. Those two also will start fulltime on the offensive line. “They are both big guys who can take up some space,” said McCullough. There remains a battle for the two inside linebacker positions among four players: Byron Vaught, Izzy Campbell, Cody Kinsel, and David Sittason. The battle for the two outside linebacker spots includes David Saunders, Lucas Gerhardt, and Ryan Sizemore. The secondary has more experience. Tim Barton returns as strong safety, a position he held most of last season after an injury to Alex Gill. He will play alongside free safety Zach Wormald. “Wormald has really stepped up,” said McCullough. “He’s got size and can cover a lot of ground.” Luke Bowman and A.J. Glines—offensive starters— could rotate into the secondary positions as well. Cornerbacks will be Josh Gober and Justin Conners. Gober was a starter last year and Conners might have

been had he not suffered an early-season injury. Angelo Scarloto and Tyler Manning are also in the cornerback mix. The most important decision of the preseason has yet to be made as of press time. The quarterback battle rages on between senior Mitchell Thomas and sophomore Jake Weber. “We won’t make the decision until before the East Central game,” said McCullough. “ W e have the maturity of a senior and the athleticism of a sophomore.” “Mitchell is a quick decision maker,” said McCullough. Thomas saw some backup duty last season and served as the junior varsity starter, which means he has more experience than Weber. Weber provides an “extra element,” said McCullough. “When a play breaks down he’s able to make something happen.” McCullough promises there won’t be any shuffling of quarterbacks. Whoever wins the job will keep it. “We need stability there,” said McCullough. “We also want each kid to get a fair opportunity.” Two players returning from injuries last season will give the Cats options at running back: Ryan Long and Conners. Long tore an ACL last season, but the knee has healed and McCullough said, “Ryan’s one of the hardest-working kids I’ve ever coached. The knee is not an issue. He’s back to the Ryan of last year.” Long gives the team a runner up the middle and averaged four yards on 80 carries. Conners is the speed back. us some more “Justin gives speed,” said McCullough. “He can get by people in space.” Sophomore Sterling Noes has a back injury, but he could push for some carries. “He’s one of the fastest players on the team,” said McCullough. “We’re expecting big things from him.” There will not be a traditional fullback this season. Luke Bowman will operate out of the H-back position— a cross between a fullback and a tight end. “We’ll move Luke around a lot in different formations,” said McCullough. Glines is the team’s leading returning receiver. He caught 34 passes for 413 yards and four touchdowns last season opposite all-state wide receiver Kyle Nowlin. “A.J.’s betting better,” said McCullough. “We need to get the ball to him a lot.” Three players are looking to play opposite Glines this season: Mitch Hoffman, Chase Peasley, and Kinsel. “All three of them have stepped up so far,” said Mc-

Cullough. The offensive line could be another strength of this year’s team. Kling has moved over from guard to center this year. “He’ll be the leader,” said McCullough. Left tackle will be manned by either John Sittason or Casey Boyle. Brennan Hiatt, Chris Schneider, and Ethan Roell are in a three-way battle for the two guard positions. Gutapfel and Jon Schneider are set to rotate at the right tackle position. Nowlin’s graduation left multiple holes on special teams. Soccer players Conner McCurley and Alex Ramey are battling for the placekicking job. Glines will be the punter. The holder will be either Thomas or Weber. Hoffman or Wormald will be the long snapper for punts. Kling will snap for extra points and field goals. The Cats open the season on Friday night against East Central. The Trojans got a week head start on the Cats; they opened Friday, Aug. 16, at home against Richmond.

Due to press constraints, a team photo of the Wildcats was not available. Check out the team photo in The Harrison Press Wednesday, Aug. 22.

RANDY AMICK/Tri-State Studios

Lawrenceburg’s Tigers, 5-6 last season under new head coach Ryan Knigga, will be gunning for their first winning season since 2008 when they open the 2012 varsity football campaign at South Dearborn – the first of two meetings this fall between the county and conference rivals.

Tigers can score, defense must catch up Jim Buchberger Sports Editor

T

2011 season, Lawrenceburg football’s first under head coach Ryan Knigga and a new spread offense, started with plenty of promise.

Tigers opened 2-0, with an emotional win over South Dearborn and another at Taylor (Ohio). But they fizzled to a 5-6 finish, haunted, again, by crippling injuries to key personnel. “Obviously, last year was a learning experience,” said Knigga, the 1996 LHS graduate and former Indiana State captain. “We were trying to implement a new system and change the culture. We were very disappointed in some aspects last year, and w e ’ v e b e e n working hard to change t h a t . W e had great workouts through the winter, spring and summer. Our kids are starting to turn the corner. They know what’s expected now.” Graduating only nine seniors, Lawrenceburg will miss two particularly in QB Evan Van Strien, whose 1,277 air yards and 16 touchdowns marked the second best passing season in Tiger history, and allconference and all-region TE/DE Jake Rennekamp (23 catches, 434 yards, six TD, 47 tackles, 8.5 sacks), named Indiana Defensive Lineman of the Year by

the Anthony Munoz Foundation, as well as team MVP. With a surprising 20 seniors returning, LHS thinks it has the speed, skill and depth to replace those two key performers. What the Tigers need, when they kick off the 2012 campaign Friday night at South Dearborn, is more defensive stopping ability. Last year’s numbers were, frankly, ugly on the defensive side. Although Lawrenceburg jacked up its point production to 27.1 per game, averaging 298 yards gained per contest, Tiger defenders surrendered a whopping 35.8 points and 394 yards every time out. Although the team’s lone Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference win in 2011 was that memorable 69-68 overtime TD bonanza in Neary Stadium’s pit, it served as a clear cry for any kind of defensive help. Second-year LHS defensive coordinator Derrick Barnes, the former Oregon Ducks and NFL linebacker, and staff went to work immediately after last season to shore up that glaring weakness. “We’ve simplified our defensive schemes in order to just let people play,” Knigga said. “We’ve also committed several players to play defense only. We may not be able to completely go twoplatoon. But if we can stick with 5-6 guys playing just one way, we’d like to do that.” Primary defenders who’ll be relied upon as run-stuffers up front include

D-linemen Dillon Buckingham (6’4”, 255, Sr.), Josh Logsdon (5’7’”, 240, Sr.) and Matt Kirk (6’2”, 225, So.), along with ends Jesse Hennies (6’4”, 185, Jr.), Bobby Weber (6’1”, 250, Sr.), Gary Friend (6’3”, 180, Jr.) and move-in Justin Carlisle (6’1”, 180, Sr.). Inside linebackers Robert Feichtner (6’1”, 185), K.C. Hedger (5’9”, 175) and Sam Zielinski (5’11”, 170), all seniors, will be on the spot this fall, along with outside backers Conner Bowell (5’7”, 155, Sr.) and Ricky Anderson (5’8”, 154, So.), a move-in from South Dearborn. Defensive secondary will be young, with first-year senior Grant Ricketts (5’8”, 125), juniors Riley Lansing (5’9”, 150) and Nico Jessee (5’7”, 146) and sophomores Konnor Jackson (5’7”, 135), Jordan Kauffman (5’8”, 125) or Mitch Martin (5’3”, 120). Lawrenceburg’s offensive weapons are well-known, starting with explosive, relentless senior runningback Chad Banschbach (1,474 all-purpose yards, 15 See TIGERS, Page 13

time both at linebacker and runningback. Solid special teams play has been an East Central hallmark. Nothing is expected to change there. Although the Trojans listed just one placekicker, junior Brett Mahoney, on their preseason roster, Behlmer acknowledged that three new candidates came out just last week. EC hit the jackpot last year in a similar-type situation with move-in Ethan McCoy (42-44 extra points, 6-7 field goals, 60 points). Stonefield or Douthit should handle the punting. EC’s deep coaching staff, another key to successful continuity, has lost Tom Harris and Buster Combs, but retains veterans Scott Schwarz, Jody Bentley. Tiger special teams should be more of a weapon than ever, with senior kicker Jake Newman concentrating on football only this fall, while Bowell retains punting duties. Kick returns by the speedy LHS skill guys are an obvious threat. Off-season coaching staff shuffling moved Mike Manford to offensive coordinator, in place of new athletics director Joe Vogelgesang, with former EC and Butler QB T.J. Brown taking over runningbacks and Justin Moore the wide receivers. Former SD aide Mike Lanning will help with defensive line. “We have some great skill players and we’re expecting them to have exceptional years,” Knigga said. “Across, the board, we have all the pieces to the puzzle. Our numbers are good (nearly 80 from grades 9-12). It’s up to us to put the puzzle together and win.” One constant concern in Lawrenceburg football remains. “We have to stay healthy and try to develop some depth at the same time,” Knigga said. “We went into the Milan game last year without six starters and we played South Dearborn for the second time without seven. We’re saying that the next man up had better be ready.” This season also marks the last time LHS will play East Central for the foreseeable future, with new EIAC members Connersville and Rushville filling open schedule spots in 2013.

Dorsey and Dan Foster. As it frequently does, East Central’s first three non-conference games concerns Behlmer again this year. “Richmond (Friday’s opening opponent, 4-6 last year) has a new coach (Matt Holeva) who was successful and Centerville,” he said. “Harrison has two Division I kids and they always play us tough. Then we’re at (Cincinnati) Sycamore for the first time. They’re a good, solid program that made the playoffs against Moeller last year.” Behlmer concluded: “We’re used to winning at least 9-10 games every year and that sets the bar high. But we wouldn’t have it any other way. We have people who are playmakers. But we’ve got to be smart throwing the football. Our seniors are pretty stong up front on both sides of the ball. But we’ve got to execute and get after people. If we don’t beat ourselves, we should be OK.”

TD), whose boatload of postseason honors included Indiana Offensive Player of the Year by TriStateFootball.com, as well as conference and county MVP. Electric as a runner can be on the field, it’s all more amazing considering the 5’9”, 170pound athlete accomplished that in eight games, due to a second-straight season clouded by injuries. Actually, it was more like six games, with separate injuries taking Banschbach out early vs. Taylor and East Central. “People will notice that Chad is much bigger and stronger this year,” Knigga said. “He seems like he’s faster, too. He’s on a mission this year and he’ll also be a big senior leader for us.” In an effort to keep their chief scoring threats healthy, Tigers are projecting their three key skill players – Banschbach and senior wide receivers Robbie Jackson (6’0”, 160) and Morgan Baker (6’0”, 150) – to play offense only to start the season. Baker caught 27 balls for 394 yards and six TD last fall. Senior Jake Rohrer (6’1”, 160) could work into the mix, too, with Lawrenceburg essentially dropping the tight end position in favor of more wideouts. Triggerman for the run-first LHS spread attack will be sophomore quarterback Sam Fette (5’11”, 155), a capable athlete who stepped up on short notice to start and win in place of an injured Van Strien in week two last year. “Sam proved he can throw the ball in the second half of that Taylor game,” Knigga noted. “But we’ve told him we just need him to manage the game for us at this point.

South Dearborn’s football Knights, 7-3 and conference runner-up last fall under fourth-year head coach Eric Lows, try to maintain their momentum when they open their 2012 varsity slate Friday night at home against Lawrenceburg (5-6 last year).

7-3 with a second-place conference finish a year ago, South Dearborn football continued to climb the ladder in its fourth year under head coach Eric Lows.

Expected to step down from his gridiron post in the off-season, due to time demands of his new job as elementary school principal, Lows actually did so. Only to return in March when all involved saw it to be in the best interests of the school and the program. The question remains: Can Knights football recapture the momentum it built in four previous years under Coach Lows (20-21 overall) following that brief spell in limbo? “I’m real excited to be back working with the kids,” said Lows, who wasn’t really gone at all. “We had to get things up and running again pretty quickly in April, but we got it knocked out fairly fast. It’s gone real well, to be honest. It’s not like I was coming into a situation where I wasn’t familiar.” The 1994 SDHS graduate and former Ball State captain added: “We want to get this program to the point where we don’t have to rebuild so much every so many years. We graduated a group that had played a lot of football last year. But we have good numbers back, with 55 on our roster – which is actually more than last year. We’ve got a great big freshman class of 18-20 kids coming in. We look for things to continue to improve.” On paper, South Dearborn returns six starters each on the offensive and defensive sides of the football. But key performers from last year are missing on both counts, which leaves both situations under the shadow of doubt. Missed the most will be SD’s defensive anchor at inside linebacker, conference MVP, team leader and the third Indiana All-State selection in Knights history, Garrett Saunders (112 tackles, 14 for loss, five sacks, five forced fumbles)

now at BSU. Saunders’ offensive counterpart, runningback Jesse Adams, will be equally hard to replace after racking up 1,389 rush yards, 12 touchdowns. And don’t forget safety and wideout Cameron Louden, who left as SD’s career interceptions leader (14). Knights have busied themselves trying to cobble together some kind of ground attack, based around top returnees Josh Faller (six passing TD, two rushing) and robust fullback A.J. Hummel (313 rush yards, three TD), both seniors. Look for Hummel to shift to tailback on occasion, in addition to his inside linebacker duties. It will help that three proven offensive line starters are back up front in center Dustin Conety (6’2”, 209 pounds), a third-year regular; plus guards Trey Grubbs (5’11”, 212) and Daniel Waldon (5’10”, 208). All are senior second-year veterans. Classmate Adam Bailey (5’10”, 181), indispensible two-way starter at wide receiver and defensive back, has big shoes to fill in Louden’s old spots. But the three-sport mainstay has the athleticism and experience. Another SD threesport mainstay, senior Austin Miller (6’0”, 181) returns at wideout after getting a taste of varsity action last year. To boost the running game, South Dearborn is considering more playing time for senior QB Clayton Hensley (5’10”, 150), a bit better passer

than Faller – a strong leader and competitor – who may be shifted to tailback in some sets. The ground game is almost certain to get a boost from tough-guy junior Brad Bruner (6’0”, 197), who’ll double at inside backer, where he charted 83 tackles (nine for loss) as a full-timer last year. Newcomer Zach Steuer (5’9”, 168), a sophomore in the same mold and the 2011 jayvee offensive MVP, will get some looks, along with junior Josh Proctor (5’9”, 182). For pure explosiveness, Knights could turn to shifty sophomore runner Paxton McGhee (5’10”, 145), a movein from Colerain who has impressed the coaching staff. “He’s moved up on the list every week,” said Coach Lows. Filling the gaps at offensive tackle and tight end will be of equal importance. Allcounty defensive end Ben May (6’4”, 227), a senior, should be a key cog at one tackle, with classmate Darrell Walker (5’9”, 198) and sophomore Dalton Cisco (6’0”, 212), vying for the other spot. A slew of newcomers may see action at tight end, where Saunders was a devastating blocker with good hands. Junior Austin Jefferson (6’3”, 204) has the size and athletic

background, but seniors Jared Whitaker (6’0”, 178) and Trent Schoster (6’0”, 174) should see time in two-TE sets. Knights would like to find playing time for two more skill players in 6’3”, 175-pound senior first-year man Seth Rutzel, at wideout, and former backup QB Trent Moorhead (6’0”, 167), a junior who has added size and speed to go with a considerable football IQ. Defensively, South Dearborn will rely heavily on a cadre of two-way players until some depth develops. May, at end, along with the rotation of Conety, Grubbs and Waldon will fill three-fourths of the front line positions, with Bruner and Hummel slotted at inside linebackers and Miller at an outside backer spot. Bailey and Faller are the most experienced returnees in the secondary, both pegged to return at cornerback. New guys who will help on defense include the trio of Cisco, Whitaker and Jefferson at the other end spot. Junior Colt Powell (5’9”, 251) could See KNIGHTS, Page 15
