Q: Dr. Ringel, lately I have noticed floating particles in my right eye. Is this cause for concern? A: The symptoms you are reporting are very common. Usually this is associated with a natural aging change of an eye fluid called the vitreous. The Michael F. Ringel, O.D. particles are thus called vitreous floaters and are normal and expected. However, in some cases these floaters may signal a problem with the retina, which is much more serious and often requires further attention. Anyone who notices floaters for the first time, or a change in the size and frequency of their floaters should have a dilated eye examination done immediately. Q. I will be traveling this spring and will be taking a few 3-6 hour flights. I have heard long flights can cause blood clots, what should I do?
A. Any type of travel can be tough on your legs because of cramped seating. Confinement for long periods of time in a plane, bus, train, or car does not allow you to Jeff Biddle stretch your legs. Movement of the legs is important to help circulate blood back to the heart. During long trips without exercising or stretching your legs, you may notice swelling, discomfort or pain in your legs, ankles and feet and can even cause a condition called deep vein thrombosis or DVT. DVT involves the formation of blood clots in the deep vein system. Blood clots develop when blood "pools". due to inactivity, show moving blood tends to clot naturally. Move around while traveling if possible and wear graduated hosiery to help reduce the risks and discomfort associated with traveling related circulatory problems. We carry these in our pharmacy. Q. How long are CD rates going to stay so low? A. The Federal Open Market Committee, FOMC, has extended the War on Seniors, Savers, & Retirees. At their March 13, 2012, meeting, the Committee decided to keep the target range for the federal funds rate at 0 to ¼ percent and currently anticipates that economic conditions are likely to warrant exceptionally low levels for the federal funds rate at least through late 2014. Based on what the FOMC has to say, CD rates are going to stay low through late 2014. Why isn’t this government doing something about low Roger Ford interest rates? Interest rates on government debt is the cost of borrowing for the government. It’s easy to see why this government will need low interest rates for a long time if they stand any chance of managing their deficit. A basic principle of Keynesian economics embraced by this government is that low interest rates stimulate economic growth, and, conversely, high interest rates stifle growth and activity. This government believes that rising interest rates may cause our currency to appreciate. This government believes a more valuable currency leads to a lack of international competitive advantage and therefore lower domestic production and employment levels. This government is trying to manage its debt, stimulate economic growth, and devalue the dollar on the backs of Seniors, Savers, and Retirees. How long can low interest rates last? In our opinion, we expect the War on Seniors, Savers, & Retirees to continue for an extended period, especially if the current administration wins a second term. How can you survive in this low interest rate environment? As of March 16, 2012, the national 5-yr CD rate is 1.38%. Seniors, Savers, & Retirees cannot live on 1.38%. Q. How do I handle my child’s investment income for tax purposes? A. Parents may not realize that there are tax
rules that may affect their child’s investment income. Children with investment income may have part or all of this income taxed at their Darren Bowman, CPA parents’ tax rate rather than at the child’s rate. Investment income includes interest, dividends, capital gains and other unearned income. The child’s tax must be figured using the parents’ rates if the child has investment income of more than $ 1,900, was under age 18 at year-end, was age 18 at year-end and did not have earned income that was more than half of his or her support, or was a full-time student under age 24 at year-end and did not have earned income that was more than half of his or her support. You will file Form 8615 to report the child’s tax using the parents’ rate on the child’s tax return. You will file Form 8814 to include the child’s income on the parent’s tax return. Q. I want to advertise my business but only have a small budget. What is the best advertisement for my money? A. Let’s say you have $200 to spend in advertising. Rather than to invest in a one-time ad costing $200, it is much better to schedule a series of smaller ads, 4 or 5 weeks at $40-$50 per week. Not only do you build credibility when your business is seen on a continual basis, but you increase your chances of being seen by more readers this way.
While tornadoes are a weather event throughout the world, nowhere are tornadoes more prevalent than in North America. Warm moist air from the Gulf of Mexico moves north and meets the cool dry air moving south from Canada, setting up ideal conditions for tornadoes to form. Insurance losses in one month last year was $9 billion. If you have wind coverage on your home policy and comprehensive on your autos, then you have coverage for tornadoes. Tornado Safety tips: 1. Know where to take shelter. If you have a basement, get under some kind of sturdy protection like a heavy table or work bench. Cover yourself with a mattress or sleeping bag. Know where heavy objects rest on the floor above and do not go under them because they may fall through a Roger Ford weakened floor and cause you injury. 2. Be sure to have a radio or NOAH weather radio, as well as a cell phone. 3. Have a predetermined place to meet when it is safe. 4. In a structure with no basement, go to the lowest floor. Seek shelter in a small center room and cover yourself with some sort of thick padding. Try to avoid windows. 5. If you are in a mobile home, leave immediately and seek safe shelter. If there is no shelter, find a depression or low area and lie flat covering your head with your arms. 6. If you are in a car and the tornado is far away, you may be able to drive out of its path by moving at right angles to the tornado. Otherwise get out and seek shelter in a sturdy building. 7. If you are in the open country, lie flat and face down protecting the back of your head with your arms. Signs of a tornado: 1. Strong Rotation in the cloud base. 2. Swirling dust or debris on the ground under a cloud base, however sometimes there is no visible funnel. 3. Hail or heavy rain followed by either dead calm or intense wind shift. 4. Loud continuous rumble or roar that doesn’t fade away in a few seconds. 5. Small bright flashes at ground level as electric lines are snapped by strong winds. Sump Pump Maintenance Here are some quarterly and annual maintenance tips in caring for your sump pump: Every three months: 1. Clean the pump inlet screen. 2. Check the power cord and make sure the cord is connected to power. 3. Pour a bucket of water into the sump to raise Roger Ford the float and make sure the pump turns on, adjusting the float if required. At least once a year: 1. Remove the pump from the sump to inspect and clean it. 2. Clean out the sump. 3. Oil or grease the bearings if required by manufacturer. 4. Check the electrical cord 5. Q. Do I need to file a tax return this year? A. You are required to file a federal income tax return if your income is above a certain level depending on your filing status, age, and the type of income you receive. The filing threshold for most individuals is the sum of the applicable personal exemption amount plus the applicable standard deduction amount. These amounts vary based on filing status and age. Some of the more common refundable credits are the Earned Income Tax Credit, the Child Tax Credit, the American Opportunity Credit for education expenses, and the Adoption Credit. Q. Dr. Stricker what is your computerized axial traction machine and can it help my back or neck?
A. Computerized axial traction is also known as a decompression table. This piece of equipment is a traction table with a programmable computer which cycles intermittent traction to stretch the intervertebral discs and facet joints in a patient's neck or low back. This machine is typically programmed for Raymond Stricker approximately a 15 minute treatment with 40 seconds D.C. FIAMA, Dipl. of stretch and 20 seconds of relaxation between each cycle. The goal is to take pressure off of any nerves AC LLC that maybe pinched by a disc. The goal is to also help open up the intervertebral disc spaces, as well as open up the facet joints. I have been using decompression therapy in my practice for approximately 9 1/2 years and have gotten good results with many patients. This table works excellent for patients with mild and moderate disc bulges in their neck or back, and may offer some relief for patients with moderate to severe disc bulges. This table is also very helpful for patients with facet syndromes and may offer some relief for people with other injuries to their back. I typically determine if a patient is a good
candidate for this treatment after doing an orthopedic examination. I do not need but do find it beneficial if a patient has an MRl so we know exactly what we are dealing with. If you have any questions regarding this procedure feel free to contact my office.

Q. What happens if Congress doesn’t pass a budget this year?
A. For 3 years, America has been budgetless. Currently, the Senate is debating whether to even vote on having a budget. So why aren’t Americans concerned? Big numbers seem confusing. Last year, the federal budget was $3.82 trillion ($2.17 trillion paid with taxes and the remaining $1.65 trillion borrowed). Roger Ford However, after a long debate, because the US has outstanding debt of $15.3 trillion, we only cut $3.82 billion (that is billion with a “B”, not trillion with a “T”) in spending last year. Let’s simplify both rhetorically and mathematically. We have a family spending $38,200/yr. The father’s annual income is $21,700. Every year, the family adds $16,500 in credit card debt. One day, the father wants to set a budget and asks the wife and kids to cut back on spending. The wife tells her husband to get a second job. After a long debate, even though they have credit card debt of $153,630, they decide not to set a budget and to only eliminate the cable bill of $385/yr. Simply, that’s the argument. One side wants the dad to keep working more (raise taxes), while the other side wants the family to cut the spending. In the end, the family adds another $16,115 of credit card debt, and the US adds another $1.65 trillion! Whether you sent thoughts on a card, a beautiful floral arrangement, or took a second and said a prayer for our family, your thoughtfulness and caring is greatly appreciated. A warm and sincere thank you goes to the North Madison Christian Church for hosting the visitation and funeral services.
