vices visited the home around 9 a.m. and that everything seemed fine. Michelle Helfrich told investigators she woke up around 7:30 and sang “Happy Birthday” to her son before leaving for work at 8:30. At around 9:30, Woeste told ISP detectives Nolan had some projectile vomiting. He then cleaned him up, gave him a bottle and put him back in his crib. At 11:30, Michelle came home for lunch and when she checked on Nolan he had vomited again, according to court records. After getting him cleaned and back to sleep, she left for school at Ivy Tech at 1:30. Around 2 p.m. Woeste reported more vomiting and he then changed Nolan. At 2:30, he heard a grunting noise from the bedroom and he then found the infant flopping around and not breathing. He took Nolan to the ottoman in the living room to do CPR. According to the video statement transcript in the probable cause affidavit, Woeste and his daughter were crying and, when he reached toward his daughter, Nolan slipped from his arms. He called the mother who then told him to call 911. Doctors at Children's Hospital reported Nolan suffered from traumatic head injury, including a subdural hematoma, diffuse brain swelling and significant retinal hemorrhages plus possible liver laceration and fractures to the ribs and upper arms which were deemed non-accidental, according to the affidavit. Autopsy results from the Hamilton County (Ohio) Coroner's Office concluded the cause of death as a homicide.

According to court records, the mother of Woeste’s daughter told police that Woeste told her he was being blamed for the death as “Shaken Baby Syndrome,” after he admitted shaking the infant when he found him not breathing. The inspection of Michelle Helfrich’s laptop computer showed several entries were noted from 1:19 p.m. to 2:28 p.m. including “can a baby stomach pop from standing on him, symptoms of internal organ damage in babies and symptoms of mono. The mother reported that Woeste was looking at the laptop when she came home for lunch but quickly closed it, according to the affidavit. Helfrich also told investigators that she told Woeste that, if things didn’t get better, she was going to end their relationship. She said she had been seeing a former boyfriend on three occasions prior to Jan. 18, according to the affidavit. Woeste was arrested by state police detectives without incident at his father’s residence in Switzerland County on Thursday, July 5. He is currently being held in the Switzerland County Jail on charges of Murder, Battery Resulting in Death of a Person Less than Fourteen Years of Age, a class A felony; and two counts of Neglect of a Dependent Resulting in Death, also class A felonies. The murder charge carries a sentence of 45-65 years while the other three counts call for 20-50 years each and $10,000 fines. Humphrey did not allow bail, and named Gary Sorge and Leslie Votaw as Woeste’s court appointed attorneys. A pre-trail hearing will be held at 1 p.m. on Aug. 24.

Walcott, who will be 93 in October, entered the U.S. Army in December 1941, and after basic training was shipped to Umnak Island in the Aleutian Islands. His engineering unit was tasked with construction of small airfields for use by Allied aircraft to launch attacks on the Japanese military. His unit, set down on barges, had no guns, despite Japanese forces overhead, said Walcott. “All we had was bayonets. ... We was under attack almost constantly,” said the Ohio County native. Later moved to Adak Island, the unit

constructed a much larger airfield to launch attacks against the Japanese on the islands of Kiska and Attu. “Sometimes we’d get shot up,” said Walcott. The infantry supplied men to move steel used in the construction, and at one point, with about 16 men in his unit, Walcott resorted to a bit of trickery to get the infantry’s cooperation. He knew the soldiers wouldn’t listen to his privates. “I painted sergeant stripes on them,” he said. His men appreciated the temporary boost in rank. Walcott’s most serious injury came during construction, not from enemy fire. He was up on a bulldozer when it rolled backwards and he ended up under the fender. His body was placed among the dead. “The doctor thought he saw me move,” said Walcott. Checking closer, the doctor detected a heartbeat. “It was 90 days before I come to,” said Walcott, who returned to Adak Island. Meanwhile, Allied forces invaded Attu and inflicted heavy losses on Japanese on the island. Once it was secure, Walcott’s engineering group constructed an airfield 3,000 feet long and 100 feet wide on Attu. After 27 months in the Aleutian Islands, Walcott had a 30-day leave at home, then was shipped to Hawaii and on to the Pacific islands of Tinan, Enewitok, Saipan and the invasion of Okinawa. Walcott served as a supervisor during the construction of the Kadena airfield on Okinawa. At one point, when Walcott was a platoon leader, rations for his men were in short supply. He ordered his men to take no Japanese prisoners. “I just had to tell them to shoot them, not to bring them in. It was bad,” he said. But if they had taken prisoners, they would be obliged to share with

them what little rations they had. “I had guys who couldn’t shoot a man,” he added. His platoon was tasked with cleaning out the basements in a town about the size of Rising Sun on Okinawa, and Walcott told his men not to use their rifles to knock open the doors. One soldier who did found his gun grabbed by a Japanese inside, who then used it to take out the American. Walcott suffered an injury in one basement, when a Japanese soldier threw a knife, hitting Walcott just above his left eye. “I opened the door and that Japanese was standing right there,” said Walcott. The knife went in about an inch and stuck there, causing profuse bleeding. Walcott removed and discarded the knife, but now wishes he’d kept it as a momento. Following the end of WWII in the Pacific, Walcott returned to the United States and was discharged on Oct. 21, 1945, at Camp Atterbury, Ind. Walcott’s military decorations include the Asiatic Pacific Theatre Ribbon with two stars, Good Conduct Medal and the World War II victory medal. Walcott married Irene Wagner, now deceased, in November 1945. They raised three sons and two daughters. His civilian occupation was as a foreman with a company building railroads. White and Walcott are truly members of “America’s Greatest Generation” as newscaster Tom Brokaw described those that served fought and died in defense of liberty during World War II, said Luther Rice in presenting plaques thank the men for their service. “You are truly a patriot, and we salute you,” Rice said to each man in a program coordinated by the Korean War Veterans of America Chapter 4.
