Committee seeks cash, backing to pass levy The Greater Harrison Chamber of Commerce was Joe Awad Harrison Press Editor expected on Tuesday, Aug. jawad@registerpublications.com 19, to vote on endorsing the Harrison public safety service levy for fire and police which will be on the Tuesday, Nov. 4, ballot, said Harrison Police Chief Chuck Lindsey. Meanwhile, Lindsey, who chairs the levy’s political action committee, told city council Tuesday, Aug. 5, that August and September will be crucial in obtaining endorsements and raising cash to promote the campaign. The chief said the committee, for example, aims to post 1,000 pro-levy yard signs, and estimates are $4,500 to $6,000. “We will spend every dime we get this year in an effort to make this a successful levy, understanding that we want to do direct mailings and door-hangers so we can educate and show our community why it is so important to support this initiative,” he said. The chief said he has reached out to corporations for donations, and the committee “will go down the list” of city venders to contribute to the See Levy, campaign. Times Remembered
‘It Was a Hard Day’s Night’ 50 years ago, Aug. 27, 1964 In the summer of 1964, I was a 20-year-old college student, working part time, hanging out with my buddies, listening to Rock’n’Roll, and generally enjoying life. Our country was now being invaded by those longhair mop-tops from Liverpool. All of my favorite stars from the 1950s suddenly were being replaced by these new long-hair guys. Thanks to ’SAI AM radio and Dusty Rhodes, the Cincinnati Gardens had secured a date for the Beatles to perform. Little did I realize that I would be a part of this historic event. “I Wanna Be Your Man!”
Plan in hand
My 15-year-old sister and her friends were all dying to go, of course. They got a plan together, each saving or getting an advance on their allowance, somehow securing their finances to purchase an admission ticket to the concert for the huge sum of $4.75. Outrageous, I thought. Their plan only had one flaw, they had no wheels to get there and none of the parents would step up to the plate. My mom convinced me though hook or crook that I was the perfect person to help them fulfill their dream of seeing the John, Paul, George and Ringo. The deal was sealed, and
six tickets were ordered for the event. We all were on our way to fulfill our destiny and become part of history, Aug. 27,1964. It was a special time, it had “Eight Days a Week.” On the evening of the concert, all five of the teeny boppers and myself piled into my dad’s green Plymouth sedan and headed to the Gardens.
That’s them!
As we got near the arena, I stopped at a light, and suddenly a limo carrying the “Fab Four” came directly past our car. At that moment, all I could hear was total chaos and screams from five teenage girls at the top of their lungs. I thought that was loud but was I in for a bigger surprise when we got inside the Gardens. We took our seats and the placed filled to capacity quickly. I think me and the ushers were the only males in the building. The rest was a restless crowd of teenage girls, chomping at the bit to see their true loves. The show started around 8 p.m. with a warm-up act. The Righteous Brothers, who I enjoyed. They were jamming the songs I liked. The mob of teeny boppers was not really into their performance, but were at the boiling point waiting for the headliners. The temperature inside soared from all of the energy being exerted, and it felt like
it was a hundred degrees. Terry The girls Viel seemed to be immune to the heat; just panting from anxiety and waiting for the guys from Liverpool. Two of the girls in my group, Lindy and Jody, were sisters. Their mom, Sis, made them each take a sweater as moms would. The energy, the anxiety, the excitement made the sweaters as valuable as a bathing suit to an Eskimo. Finally, about 9:30 p.m., the Beatles took the stage, and I thought the roof was going to blow off. Their first number was Twist and Shout, but the screaming of 14,000 teenage girls drowned out the music and voices. All I could hear was my sister and her friends screaming, “We are breathing the same air!” If OSHA was around then it would have shut down the place for noise levels exceeding a jet engine at full-take off power. Our seats were quite a distance from the stage, so I decided to take a gamble and try something. I took the girls from our seats and headed down the outside hall in the concession area, walking towards the stage. We made it all the way to the opening right at the stage and perched ourselves just a few feet from the Beatles. The girls were in heaven. We still could not hear their voices but at least we could see them up close.
Thinking of building your own
The young fifth-grader I actually picked up and placed on my shoulders so even she could see. It Was a “Hard Day’s Night.” We all survived the concert and headed home to Harrison, with my ears still ringing. To my surprise, they all wanted to stop at Frisch’s in Harrison to get a Beatles tumbler to complete the evening. I thought, now what am I going to do? Surely, all my buddies will be there and see me looking like a dork with all of theses teeny boppers. Luckily, it was a Thursday night so my friends were elsewhere and I was not spotted. I went home with my ears and brain still ringing, tried to relax and could not decide whether to watch the late movie, hosted by Bob Shreve or Jack Paar. “I am a Loooooser” !!!! This was an experience that we will never forget and becoming a part of history gives us the right to spin yarns about the Cincinnati Gardens forever. Thanks mom for bribing me and letting me see history in the making. Bev, Connie, Pam, Jody, and Lindy you all still look great now just as in ’64.

All eyes do not always see the same Not long ago, I received a request to stop printing court news. The request is sincere, and the writer makes some excellent points.
The points deserve to be addressed, and beyond that I want readers to have a better understanding of the First Amendment rights, role and responsibilities of local newspapers. Printing public records has been an ongoing debate in newspaper circles since the advent of modern journalism. Most community newspapers aggressively printed as much as they could in previous generations. Without compunction, they ran suicides, arrests, ambulance runs, divorces, fender-benders galore, and much more “base” information. Personally, I have little interest in these reports but many readers unquestionably want them. As an example, a Southwest School Board member rebukes me whenever the court news
doesn’t make the paper. This person is intelligent and inquisitive, and an experienced board member and businessman. He believes court news is essential, particularly to the business community. He dismisses opinions that it panders to the lowest common denominator.
Another perspective
The letter writer sees it differently, stressing that printing bankruptcies and civil suits takes a toll on families, particularly children. The writer claims kids are teased and ridiculed, and that is unfortunate. This person also claims running court news is “mean spirited.” Absolutely not. The letter writer asserts one reason The Press runs court news is because “the paper has always done it.” That is not my reasoning. I have been a journalist 40 years. I often think about public record issues, and have attended many seminars and forums on these issues. Several times I have sat on panels on which the issues
were debated. I run nothing Joe because it is traditional! The writer asks if the Awad public is “really waiting with bated breath about who is suing who and who is losing their home?” Probably not, but that doesn’t mean there aren’t readers who religiously check the court news. I ask this question: Is the public waiting with bated breath to read anything in any newspaper, or to watch any TV news, or to catch a certain public report on the radio? Maybe, maybe not. The writer also points out The Press possibly is the last paper in Hamilton County to run the court registry. If that is true, it’s because the daily newspaper and most of the weeklies are owned by the same company that tends to make sweeping corporate decisions.
Paying the freight
Also, the information is printed in the Hamilton County Court Index. From a service perspective, why should we force our readers to subscribe to that publication if we can pay the freight and bring it to them as part of our package? Granted, that is not my most important consideration but our goal is local news and information, so it matters. The writer also asserts The Press has had complaints over the years about printing court news. True enough, but in my three years as editor I also have had complaints when it is absent. Here’s my suggestion: let me know your opinion by e-mailing jawad@registerpublications.com. Keep your explanation to no more than 100 words. Maybe I can be persuaded to drop it, or maybe the responses will favor keeping it. No drama, please. Joe Awad is editor of The Harrison Press.
Guest Column
Making world American could be answer to illegal aliens Larry Wiwi’s last TEA Time column addressed the US immigration problem. On many topics we TEA Party types agree there is a problem but we differ on solutions. Our immigration policy is poisoned by electoral politics and flaunts the rule of law. As a tech guy, I have worked worldwide with techies of all demographics. They all know English, the global language of business and technology. Many of my associates have been in the US with Green Cards, meaning they are working here legally. Their numbers are extremely restricted but they pay taxes, including Social Security, even though they are ineligible for benefits. Yet politicians are tripping over themselves
to grant favored status to millions of illegals. Many states Dan now allow in-state tuition to Riehle illegals but not to children of legal guest workers. Bizarre! During the Reagan Administration, we granted amnesty to illegals as the solution to a problem that politicians refused to fix. Like Lucy with the football to Charlie Brown’s kicking, it will happen again. More disregard for the rule of law. We should make immigration more open and maybe grant a slight edge to illegals already here. Maybe grease their path to citizenship but not grant special status. Perhaps they should be granted temporary

Siri on steroids may be next phone fad
When Apple rolled out the iPhone 4S back in 2011, one of the new features to garner lots of attention was Siri. This digital assistant could receive voice commands and accomplish various tasks. It seemed to be right out of a Star Trek movie. Siri was the source of extraordinary media attention and grist for several stand-up comedians. Siri has expanded the tasks that it can do and has spawned several other competing applications that allow for voice commands. You can now ask Google questions by speaking rather than typing in requests. Microsoft has a new app called Cortana. There is a new company entering the market that seeks to take Siri and Siri-like apps to a new level. The company called Viv has set up shop in San Jose, Calif., and has attracted a literal “Who’s Who” in the field of artificial intelligence (AI) to join its staff. The team now has engineers who worked on the original Siri and IBM’s Watson of Ken Jennings and Jeopardy fame. Their mission is to take Sirilike applications and enable them to do some very complex tasks. For anyone who has used Siri, once the novelty and fascination of speaking orders to your phone wears off, it becomes very apparent that the complexity of tasks within Siri’s grasp is very limited. In most cases Siri can only provide actions on existing functions or retrieve information already stored and organized in a form that answers your question. Tasks that require the acquisition of information and actions based on that information to accomplish another action are well beyond Siri and all of the other similar apps now available. For example, you can ask Siri to wake you at 6:00 AM. This is a simple task since your phone has an alarm program and a clock. Siri needs only to connect the two to accomplish your request. Let’s change the request making it more complex. Let’s say that the reason you needed to be awake by 6 a.m. was to get to the airport for an 8:30 a.m. flight to Washington, DC, on Delta. You know that bad weather is predicted overnight. This could slow your drive. So you request Siri is to wake you in time to get to the airport for your flight to DC. Viv hopes to have an app that will break down your request into smaller tasks, gather information and then set the alarm to allow you to make your flight. This task now requires monitoring the weather for your area. It must also gather traffic reports for roads you will use. The app must also retrieve data from your airline to make sure that the flight is indeed on time. With all this information it will compute the amount of time you need to make the flight and wake you at the appropriate time. While this task would be a simple one for a human personal assistant, it is now well beyond the reach of any app available for your phone. The folks at Viv see extraordinary applications. This level of AI might assist with medical diagnoses using information gleaned from millions of research papers, information that the attending physician doesn’t even know exists. It might open opportunities for those with sight or auditory impairments. For sure it will speed the development of driverless cars. Although my morning commute on I-275 often seems like I am among many “driverless” cars. Not sure even a new Siri will solve that issue!

green cards with stringent conditions, and deport those who fail to abide by the conditions. But the problem is not solvable by Larry’s plan or my plan! The numbers are overwhelming. Here is a novel approach: Make the world American! I don’t mean by war or annexation or government. It was the imperfect free market structure that produced generations of wealth and relatively even distribution of income to mass quantities of immigrants; orders of magnitude better than what the lower class experiences today. It was imperfect because of human failings, legislative kickbacks, lobbying and
laws inconsistent with Adam Smith’s The Wealth of Nations. So how do we make every locale “American” as we once were? Google or order a book titled The Poverty of Nations - A Sustainable Solution by economist Asmus and theologian Grudem which lists and explains 79 factors that will allow a nation to overcome poverty and become “America.” It would be great if the US adopted this approach. Richie, Dave & Dave won’t make it I received an e-mail from a faithful reader about last week’s column, and while I won’t bore you with the praise thrown my way, I will address the writer’s key point. Joe from Harrison writes: Why are Richie “Don’t Call Me Dick” Allen, Dave Parker, and Dave Concepcion not in the National Baseball Hall of Fame? Actually, Joe didn’t add the “don’t call me Dick” to Allen’s name. That’s one of my favorite lines from a baseball player. The other thing I loved about Allen was the Sports Illustrated cover when he played for the Chicago White Sox. He’s shown in the dugout attempting to juggle four baseballs with a cigarette hanging from his mouth. Those idiosyncrasies, of course, do not make someone a hall of famer and though Allen’s numbers were impressive, if you look at the players he is most comparable to at baseballreference.com, none of them are in the hall of fame either. Allen was a great player for several years and probably is
among the top five of players not in the hall of fame, but he falls short in my estimation. Parker also is one of the best players not in the hall. Like Allen, Parker won an MVP award, but he also had six top-10 finishes in the MVP voting. Baseball-reference.com compares him to 10 players and three of them are in the Hall - Tony Perez, Billy Williams, and Andre Dawson. That might be considered faint praise, though, since Perez and Dawson are considered by some as two of the poorest selections in the hall. Parker and others believe his involvement in a cocaine scandal while with the Pittsburgh Pirates has hurt his HoF chances, but after garnering 24 percent of the vote in his second year on the hall of fame ballot, his votes mainly hovered around the 15 percent range and he is no longer on the ballot. I don’t believe he will make it, either. Concepcion was a good player on some great teams with the 1970s-era Reds and compares favorably with two current hall
of famers, Pee Bob Hyle Wee Reese and Luis Aparicio. He was a great fielder who took advantage of allAstroturf infields to bounce throws from deep in the hole at shortstop to first base. I’m not sure how that helped get anyone out (physics students please help me here), but it always looked good. Concepcion never got much support in the hall of fame voting, but stands a chance of someday getting in through the secondary selection market for the hall - voting by current hall of fame members. Still, I believe Concepcion, like Parker and Allen, belongs in Hall of Very Good. I’m sure this will disappoint Joe from Harrison, but I don’t believe in a big hall of fame. Inside Scoop
Protests are one thing, looting is another Can’t help but think about the Timothy Thomas riots that occurred in April of 2001. With the current unrest that is occurring in Missouri in much the same manner as what occurred in Cincinnati there are some interesting parallels and some things that are different in the two situations. Stephen Roach was the Cincinnati police officer that shot Timothy Thomas, and as such was identified almost immediately. Local police in Ferguson, MO, withheld that info for several days. I am interested in what follow-up investigations occur in this latest in-
cident. Even given the perceived news media bias, it seems to me that the local constabulary went a little overboard in trying to control the situation. When your opening salvo is tear gas launched from military surplus APCs, it seems to me that I was watching something from a third world coup. I have never been able to understand the rationale that a protest is a good time to “shop local.” Does running out of a tire store with a free set of whitewalls register any sort of protest at all? A beauty supply store was also looted so I
guess police will have to look for the best coiffed on the picket lines. Not to demean those who seriously are there protesting the death of Michael Brown but surely there are those who look upon the unrest as an opportunity to get some payback even if the payback comes at the cost of some poor shlub who’s only trying to operate a business and earn a living. They are going to take the advice of the character Howard Beale, played by Peter Finch, in the movie Network, when he encouraged his viewers to throw open the window and yell,” I’m mad as hell and
I’m not JimRobertson going to take it anymore.” I’m not trying to downp l a y t h e tragic shooting of a young man and the stupid loss of his life. I have no use for looters of goods or ideals. One more scrimmage till season starts With one scrimmage behind them, the time for cleaning up small mistakes is at hand for the Harrison Wildcats football team.
Bob Hyle Contributing Writer
The Cats went up against McNicholas High School last Thursday and host the final scrimmage of the preseason on Friday. The offense was in high gear, according to coach Kent McCullough. He credits the work of offensive coordinator Shawn Sowders and the returning players for “getting comfortable in the system. We’ve got a lot of people picking up where they left off last year,” he said. McCullough said senior quarterback Jake Weber was sharp and connected on two nice passes to sophomore wide receiver Jacob Back. McCullough also liked the running of juniors Alex Anderson, Tylan James, and Mitchell Hogue. The only concern with the offense was in the line play, which McCullough doesn’t believe is quite ready yet. “We made a few mistakes up front that we are going to have to fix,” he said. “There were a few plays where if we made the block we could turn a five-yard play into a 50-yard play.” While the Harrison defense gave up two scores, McCullough was pleased that they also created two turnovers. Hogue, playing safety, picked off a pass and returned it to the McNicholas 10-yard-line. Defensive end Nathan Silcox forced a fumble from a Rockets ball carrier. “There were things that we liked, but it’s a scrimmage,” said McCullough. “We know there are more things to work on.” Harrison’s final scrimmage is Friday night at Wildcats Stadium when the defending Division II state champions, Loveland, come to town.

Broken bones are setback for V’ball setter Ladycats forced to start season with just one setter The injury bug, which bothered the Harrison Ladycats volleyball team a year ago, has already played havoc with the team’s lineup as the season opens this week. Bob Hyle Contributing Writer
Sophomore setter Eva Mahoney suffered a broken bone in her hand in a scrimmage at Ashland High School and will miss significant time. That means Miranda Charls will be the sole setter for the Ladycats, who were expected to go with a two-setter lineup this season, similar to what the team used in 2013. “Miranda has played phenomenal since then,” said Harrison coach Amy Berwanger. “This is her first time running a 5-1 offense, but the girls are getting comfortable with it.”
The strength is in the blocker
The strength of this year’s team is in the middle of the court—blockers Lindsey Cron and Brianna Looney. “They are going to make a huge difference on the front line,” said Berwanger. “They bring a lot on offense and defense.” Fellow senior Erin Engstrom is also expected to be a major contributor as an outside hitter. Two other outside hitters that have excelled in the preseason are sophomore Maggie Marston and junior Jody Bittner. Natalie Ziegler won the battle to be the team’s starting libero to lead the back row. Harrison has faced some tough competition in the scrimmages and has fared well against most of its opponents. The Ladycats went up against Seton in two different settings and won each time. The Ladycats also beat Mother of Mercy in three of four sets.
May come back to haunt
The Ladycats struggled against Lebanon and Oak Hills and the latter loss could be a factor in the future. The two schools are scheduled to play each other on Aug. 30. “That will be a real test for us,” said Berwanger. The Ladycats open the regular season with Glen

against Anderson. Harrison defeated Little Miami at Bellwood Country Club last week by a score of 232-237. “We should have won that match a little easier, but that was the first match we’ve played on a country club course with hundred-foot trees, a lot of sand, and water,” said Bryan Carr, coach of the Ladycats. Carr is looking for even more improvement this season and likes the way the program is headed. Haley Wright is the only senior on the team and Gwinner leads a contingent of seven juniors on the 10-player squad. “I hope to get our scores below 200 at Circling Hills before long,” said Carr. Other members of the roster include juniors Lili Scarloto, Rachelle Grubbs, Alexi Caplinger, and Peyton Hon; sophomores Savannah Sandlin, Madeline Campton, and Taylor Keppler, and freshman Tiffany Ferneding.
Ladycats golf team hits the green with team wins at every match
The Harrison Ladycats golf team is off to an excellent start with three victories in the team’s first three matches, including wins over Southwest Ohio Conference opponents Northwest and Little Miami. The Cats had a pair of easy wins in their first two matches, a 212-261 win over Northwest and a 215-242 win over Anderson. Both wins came on Harrison’s home course, Circling Hills Golf Course, and junior Taylor Gwinner was medalist in both matches with a round of 48 against Northwest and a 52 Bob Hyle Contributing Writer
With Wilmington no longer a member of the SWOC, Carr was pleased that another conference school, Edgewood, decided to compete in the sport this fall. Having four teams—including Northwest and Little Miami— means the league will be able to hold a championship day, which Carr reported is set for Sept. 24, at Fairfield Golf Course. One of the highlights of the schedule will be a match on Tuesday, Sept. 2, against Cincinnati Country Day School at Camargo Country Club: one of the five longest courses in terms of yardage from the women’s tees in the United States.
Success expected on singles court The sincourts may be the key for the Harrison Ladycats tennis team this season, according to coach Andy Zureick. Second singles Hannah Williams won both her matches against Anderson and Winton Woods. The team had 4-1 losses to both to open the season. Brooke Retherford, who plays first singles for the Ladycats, lost both her matches,

players, but lacks their competitiveness.” In the past, the doubles courts have been Harrison’s strength, but thus far the success has been minimal. In the loss to Winton Woods, Sidney Mauldin and Jenn Elrod were up 5-2 in the third set, but couldn’t close things. Liz Mains could see some action at second doubles as well. Shelby Klotter and Paige Rains make up the first doubles team. The key to their success could be Raines, who
but in the loss to Winton Woods, the match went to three sets and lasted two hours and 45 minutes. Retherford won the first set and took her opponent to a tiebreaker in both the second and third sets. If Taylor Means can win a few matches at third singles, the Ladycats could change the focus on this year’s team. Means “has to find a way to be more competitive,” said Zureick. “She’s as skilled as either of the other two singles
had a strong pre-season, but “has to learn to handle adversity,” according to Zureick. Harrison has two home matches this week. Mother of Mercy visits on Wednesday and the Bobcats lost their best player from last year to graduation. “We hung with them on all the other courts last year,” said Zureick. Ross comes to Harrison on Thursday for another SWOC match.
Ladycats soccer team has strong defense too Bob Hyle Contributing Writer
Harrison Ladycats soccer coach Troy Kinnett knows that his team’s offense is getting a lot of attention entering this season, which was scheduled to begin on Monday night against Glen Este. He acknowledges that with five of six offensive starters returning, including the school’s career goal scorer in Kayla Childs, it’s not a stretch to believe other coaches will be game-planning to slow the Harrison offense. But he doesn’t think people should forget about his team’s defense, either. With two returning all-league per-
formers in Maggie Tidwell and Carah Kreimer, the Ladycats are strong on both sides of the ball. Harrison won its two preseason scrimmages, 7-2 over Seven Hills Academy and 4-1 over Middletown. All three goals scored against the Cats came well after the games were decided. “Our defense doesn’t get the attention that the offense gets, but they deserve a lot of praise,” said Kinnett. “There is renewed hope and a fresh start for everyone,” he said. “You really don’t know what you have until three or four weeks into the season and you see other teams and scores.” This year’s team under-
stands the importance of playing together, according to Kinnett. “They have been working hard and they accept the challenge ahead of them,” he said. This is the third year of the Southwest Ohio Conference’s existence and Ross has won the league title each of the first two seasons. Kinnett believes the road to the SWOC title will run through Ross again this year. He believes Edgewood will have something to say about that, too. What makes this Harrison team stand out is the depth, according to Kinnett. “I believe we will be able to sub and continue to play at

Levy, From Page 1 the Fraternal Order of Police, Lodge 113, and the Ohio Association of Professional Firefighters is in the process of granting its endorsement, said Lindsey. “With the Greater Harrison Chamber of Commerce, we did a presentation in July, and we hope they endorse us. I need the help of council to reach out to the Democratic and Republican clubs, and the Tea Party so we can try to get political endorsements,” he said. “It is critical for us that when we go to advertise in our newspapers and in our literature that we show that we have the professional organizations and civic groups in town sup-
porting us.” Lindsey said he and Harrison Fire Chief Rob Hursong will speak to as many civic groups as they can in September and October. “We want to educate people. We want to show them that we care, and to answer any questions they may have.” The city is asking voters to approve a 4.8-mill, five-year levy to raise $5 million for police and fire services over its lifetime. If approved, the levy would cost Harrison property owners 50 cents more for each $100 valuation. A property owner with a $100,000 valuation would pay $168 more a year.

In mid-February, she heard the words “Your mom’s lungs are no longer strong enough to sustain life. We’re out of options.” Young’s emotions and fears consumed her as the thoughts of making her mom’s last days comfortable, and, fearing the aftermath, learning to walk alongside the changing life of her dad. closed. She also told deputies she thought he had tried to “break into her vehicle last night. ... This morning she observed a bent kitchen knife along with a pair of scissors missing a handle inside a kitchen drawer....” A neighbor, Diane Feldman, told her she had seen Troy Foster trying to steal her car, and the broken scissor handle was found in Feldman’s car. Foster was convicted of attempted theft of Feldman’s car March 16, 2012, according to the affidavit. A friend of Troy Foster’s said they had been out at a bar, and Foster did not have any money to pay for drinks. Later, Foster went to the friend’s apartment and had several dollar bills, and a few fives, tens and twenties. Deputies also spoke to Foster’s sister again, and she showed them the shoes Foster normally wore to work, which deputies processed into evidence, finding glass embedded in the shoes. The glass found in the shoes matched the glass collected from the door, according to a report for the Indiana State Police lab, wrote Jansen in the affidavit. Deputies spoke with Fosters friends again in June 2014, and they remember Foster laughing when he told them he got some money “from his workplace.”
