Main Street’s ‘admuraltion’ ready to hang

Schmeltzer & Probst honored for service By Chandra L. Mattingly Staff Reporter cmattingly@registerpublications.com

Sometimes folks who are being honored receive plaques to hang on their walls. Main Street Aurora took a different approach in honoring Dr. Matthew B. Probst and Karla Fry Schmeltzer for their contributions to MSA. The MSA members decided to hang Probst and Schmeltzer on a wall – or at least in a boarded-up window – in a mural featuring the two in period clothing. Painted by artist Cindy Crofoot, the mural was unveiled Sunday, June 29, at Aurora City Hall before a crowd of friends, relatives and MSA members. Schmeltzer, who served as MSA director for nine years, wiped away tears as she claimed she never cries at these events. Probst, who stepped down as MSA board president when she retired, stood between her and the mural, smiling. “We wanted to do something that would really honor them” as well as benefit Aurora, said new board president Jim Waldon before Aurora Mayor Donnie Hastings revealed the mural. So MSA members decided to have “marvelous artist” Crofoot paint a mural of the two. Then they also decided it should keep the theme of the existing Windows of Aurora, as a scene one might spot looking in or out of a window in early Aurora. Probst and Schmeltzer had not seen the mural and did not know before Sunday they were featured in period dress, said Waldon after the unveiling. MSA members thought of just installing the mural and taking the two to dinner, but instead decided to invite them and oth-

Leota Wafford

Leota Mae Wafford, age 100, of Dillsboro, Ind., entered this life Feb. 14, 1914, in Aurora, Ind. She went to be with her Lord Thursday evening, June 26, 2014. Leota was the loving daughter of Harry and Effie Schuyler Greive. She graduated from Dillsboro High School with the class of 1933. Following her graduation she was united in marriage with Earl Wafford “Chief” on May 6, 1933. This marriage lasted 61 years until his death in 1994. The first 17 years of her married life was spent as a Navy wife. Earl served his country in the Navy as a master deep sea diving instructor. His career took them to live in Washington State, California, Panama, Maryland, and his final assignment was Key West, Fla. Upon Earl’s retirement from the Navy, they returned to Dillsboro to raise their family. She made her home open and welcome to all who came through her doors. Most found love, laughter, and happiness in her home and many found the Lord through her witness; she had a servant’s heart. Leota and Earl were foster parents for over 25 years to over 20 children, of which two boys were adopted, Jim and Steve. Leota’s theory was if a child needed a home she would pull them in. Leota accepted Jesus Christ as her personal Savior as a teenager. Because of her faith in Christ she has been a Godly influence and example to her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and friends and those who she came in contact with, even those at the nursing home. Regardless of the circumstances, whenever she was asked how she was doing, her reply was always “I’m blessed.” Leota is survived by her loving family, her daughter, Mary White, of Huntington, W.Va.; her three sons, Earl (Shirlee) Wafford Jr., of Loveland, Ohio, Tom (Berneta) Wafford, of Dillsboro, and James (Carolyn) Wafford, of Connersville, Ind.; 13 grandchildren; 41 great-grandchildren, and one great-greatgrandchild. Also surviving is a dear friend, Rosalie Gordon, whom she loved as her own daughter. She was preceded in death by her husband, Earl Wafford; her daughter, Shirlee; her son, Steve Wafford; son-in-law Tom White; her brothers, Julius, Paul, and Glenn Greive, and her great-grandson, Nathaniel White. A funeral service celebrating the homegoing of Leota will be Wednesday, July 2, 2014, at 11 a.m. at Dillsboro United Methodist Church, where Leota and her family worshipped for many years, with Pastor Leon Walters officiating. She will be laid to rest next to her husband at Oakdale Cemetery in Dillsboro. Friends may meet her family Tuesday, July 1, 2014, at DeVries Fellowship Room 12667 Lenover St. in Dillsboro (formerly the 50+ club building) from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. Memorial contributions in her memory may be given to CI Family Worship Center Mission Fund. Arrangements are entrusted to DeVries Funeral Home in Dillsboro.

Aurora says: Come on down(town)! By Chandra L. Mattingly Staff Reporter cmattingly@registerpublications.com

Folks heading into Aurora on Ind. 56 from down river or from U.S. 50 now pass signs inviting them into the river city's historic downtown. “The design committee worked on those and had those put in,” said Main Street Aurora Director Bethany Ross. New Main Street Aurora Board President Jim Waldon was chairman of the design committee at the time, but credited the whole committee for designing and installing the signs. That committee now includes Judy Hizer, chair, Jada Ankenbauer, Adam Hill, Ben Turner, Matt Probst, Shane Wagner, Shirley Meyer and advisors Waldon and Randy Turner. Originally, the committee was considering three signs, with the third at the east side of the George Street Bridge, said Ross. But that might have interfered with the sign for the historic bridge itself. “So we settled on the two,

Learn fireworks laws before celebrating

The Indiana State Fire Marshal is reminding Hoosiers who plan on celebrating Independence Day with fireworks to know the law before they light a fuse. Indiana’s fireworks laws can be found in Indiana Code 22-11-14, and cover when, where, and who can discharge fireworks. “Fireworks are a holiday tradition for many Hoosier families on the 4th of July. Indiana’s fireworks laws were created to help protect families and communities from the danger fireworks can present if not used properly,” said Indiana State Fire Marshal Jim Greeson. Fireworks may be discharged on the user’s property, the property of someone who has granted permission, or at locally-approved special discharge locations. Remember, those setting off fireworks are still responsible for any property damaged by their fireworks even if they were discharged from a legal location. Keep that in mind when using bottle rockets, roman candles, or any other aerial fireworks. According to state law, fireworks may be discharged between 9 a.m. and 11 p.m. on most days other than holidays. On holidays (Memorial Day, Independence Day, Labor Day and New Year’s Eve) they can be discharged until midnight. On June 29 though 30, July 1 through 3 and 5 through 9, fireworks can be discharged until two hours past sunset.

Communities in Indiana may have ordinances in place that further restrict the days and hours in which fireworks can be used. Contact local fire departments or local officials to find out what the restrictions are. Fireworks can only be purchased by persons 18 years of age and older. Children may only possess or use fireworks when an adult is present and is responsible for the child’s conduct. A person less than 18 years of age who possesses or uses fireworks without an adult present is committing a Class C infraction. People who use fireworks at any place other than their own property, someone else’s property with proper permission or a special discharge location, may face up to a $500 fine. Recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally using fireworks that harm someone else is a criminal offense that may result in six months to three years in prison and a maximum fine of $10,000. Recklessly, knowingly, or intentionally using fireworks that causes damage to someone else’s property is a criminal offense that may result in one year in prison and a maximum fine of $5,000. Contact local law enforcement to report someone violating fireworks laws. For more information about fireworks safety and fireworks laws, visit GetPrepared. IN.gov.

The cost of well plugging or “decommissioning” a well or borehole can vary. In Iowa, for instance, plugging drilled household wells ranges from $600 for shallow, easily accessible wells to more than $3,000 for wells greater than 500 feet in depth. The width of the well may also affect the price. The property owner is generally liable for paying decommissioning costs. Some states have programs that will help pay the cost of water well plugging. SOUTH DEARBORN MIDDLE SCHOOL AND IVY TECH POOL RESOURCES

SUBMITTED PHOTOS

During the month of May, students in Mrs. Caudill and Mrs. Mullalley’s 7th grade science classes at South Dearborn Middle School were covering Indiana Academic Standards related to life science. Students had the privilege of having Mrs. Tedesco from Ivy Tech Community College come into their science classrooms each Friday. Each student was given the opportunity to hands-on learning using microscopes to observe cells. During the first lab, students learned about the parts of a microscope and how to properly handle and use a microscope. In several other labs, students used their microscope skills to observe a variety of prepared slides of cells. Students were able to see how cells are very tiny and can only be studied by using microscopes. Students were thankful that Mrs. Tedesco came into their classrooms and provided a fun and educational environment looking at cells and learning how to use a microscope.

Trivia

Q: With a 4-0 victory over the Padres last week, Giants pitcher Tim Lincecum became the fourth active major league hurler with two or more no-hit games to his credit. Name those other three active pitchers with multiple no hitters. A: Homer Bailey, Reds (2012, 2013), Justin Verlander, Tigers (2007, 2011) and Mark Buehrle, Toronto (2007, 2009, the latter a perfect game). The last time four or more pitchers with multiple nohitters all were active in the same season was 1974, with five (Steve Busby, Ken Holtzman, Nolan Ryan, Bill Stoneman & Don Wilson).

1934 – The Cardinals beat the Reds 8-6 in an 18-inning marathon in the first game of a doubleheader at Crosley Field in Cincinnati. Starting pitchers Dizzy Dean of St. Louis and Tony Freitas of Cincy each hurl 17 innings. The game is tied 5-5 after nine innings and the deadlock isn’t broken until the 17th, when Cards left fielder Joe (Ducky) Medwick belts a solo home run that hits the top of the left field wall, bouncing onto the roof of the laundry building across the street. Reds tie it in the bottom of of the 17th. In the 18th, St. Louis scores twice off reliever Paul Derringer to take an 8-6 edge. But the Reds start another rally, loading the bases. With Jim Lindsey pitching, Medwick ends the game with a leaping one-handed catch in front of the centerfield scoreboard. The second game is called after five innings, tied at 2-2, because of darkness.

CARMEL, Ind. – All-Star games, traditionally, are a postseason reward for a big year, or a standout career. They're also a whole lot of fun – despite the sometimes less-than-ideal playing conditions, such as drizzly rain and humidity comparable to that in Borneo, as that which accompanied Saturday's 25th annual ICGSA All-Star Classic at Carmel's Cherry Tree Complex. Ellen Barrett, South Dearborn's first-team All-State third baseman headed for Indiana State University next fall, became the Knights' first state All-Star player since Garrett Saunders (football, 2012) in the Indiana Coaches of Girls Sports Association showcase Saturday. Starting at third base, Barrett went 1-for-3 in the South's 2-0 win in game one of a doubleheader sweep over the North. Playing 11 of 14 innings in the twinbill, the 5'10” slugger also saw action at second base and shortstop in the South's 8-2 nightcap. Barrett also played a role in one of the afternoon's most unusual All-Star plays – one of those double-take moments that drew some laughs. With Barrett at the plate, North pitcher Nickole Finch, of Wheeler High School, went into her windmill windup to deliver to home. But the ball glanced off Finch's

group of talent. You read about these girls all season. But getting there, and getting the chance to meet them and see their personalities – then you understand why they're so good.” The All-Star weekend also offers a golden opportunity to network. Barrett, who coached the Lady Knights to SD's first-ever No. 1 state ranking (Class 3A) in any team sport this spring, made connections that could result in upgrading the Lady Knights' 2015 slate, with possible trips to Franklin Central and Boonville, among others. Another All-Star honor came close to home Saturday, when Jennings County pitcher Lisa McIntosh was named MVP for the South's doubleheader sweep. McIntosh followed starter Brittany Gray of Greenwood to the mound in game one and smacked a two-run double in the 2-0 shutout win. She followed with a home run in game two Saturday. Lawrenceburg junior Paxton Parris led Lady Tiger softball in nearly every offensive category this past season, batting .393 with six home runs, 32 RBI, nine doubles and 24 stolen bases as third-year varsity catcher. 24 steals) led the team, or ranked second, in every significant offensive category. Sure-handed junior classmate Casey Larson, at first base, improved her hitting to the tune of .288 with 20 RBI to earn all-conference honors. Team captain Ashby Foster, another junior, played as good as nearly anyone in the area at shortstop (.256, 19 runs, 9 RBI). The right-hander also doubled as the Tigers' No. 2 hurler, logging a 2-7

record and 7.16 ERA in 651/3 frames, fanning 42 with 19 walks. Other returning Lawrenceburg starters include outfielder Megan Sampson, third baseman Anna Heine, both juniors, along with sophomore Lexi Steigerwald at second base. Freshman Josie Denton broke into the lineup early on and gave the lineup a lift, not only with her .313 batting average and 28 runs

scored (tying Parris for the team lead), plus 14 steals and 15 RBI. Her competitive fire proved equally vital. “We're excited about the team we have coming back next year,” said Coach McCool. “We've also got 13 freshmen coming in, with most of them playing summer ball right now. We hope to have a jayvee team (for the first time since 2011) and a lot more competition on the varsity.”

Body of missing Ohio man found in Dearborn County

HONORED VETERAN VISITS

A missing Miami Township, Ohio, man’s body was found in Dearborn County last Thursday, June 26. The man’s nephew is now facing felony charges in Ohio, and could be charged in Indiana as well. Paul Bramlage, 54, Wesselman Road, was reported missing Saturday, June 21, after people reported he had not been seen or heard from in nearly a month, according to the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Office. Police arrested Bramlage’s nephew Cory Hall Thursday, June 26, on outstanding and unrelated traffic warrants, and questioned him about his uncle’s whereabouts, said HCSO

information officer Mike Robinson. As a result of the interview Hall led police to Bramlage’s remains. Sources said the body was found near Wilmington in Hogan Township. Dearborn County Water Rescue was called to help police and coroner’s office officials in the search. Hall is charged in Hamilton County, Ohio, with murder and abuse of a corpse. The incident remains under investigation by the Hamilton County Sheriff’s Criminal Investigation Section, the Hamilton County Coroner, and the Dearborn County Sheriff’s Office.

In a string of coincidences, a Medal of Honor recipient stopped to visit wounded Army veteran Brett Bondurant, who served in Afghanistan, and tour his house built by Homes for Our Troops last week. Standing are Dale Punch, Medal of Honor recipient Bob Patterson, and Mike Roley. Seated are Bondurant and Brent Casey. Punch served in the same Marine Corps unit in Vietnam as now Greendale resident, and Moores Hill native, Ebie Roberts. Although they served “in country” at different times, they met a reunion. Punch who makes challenge coins, had recently been contacted through Facebook about the coins by Ohio County resident and veterans service officer PG Gentrup. Punch and the others are NASCAR fans, and since they were nearby for the Quaker State 400 at Sparta, Ky., decided to come to Lawrenceburg for a visit Friday, June 27. The group also stopped at the Lawrenceburg American Legion Friday afternoon.

PAWSitively Awesome! We really appreciate the PAWS Pet Page in The Register because it makes people aware of what great pets we have for adoption and the Center. People often come in and say that they’ve seen a certain pet on the pet page. I believe that this wonderful exposure has helped find homes for dozens of our precious furry friends! BUILD BIGGER

PRACTICE DEMOCRACY.

PROFITS!

READ YOUR LEGAL NOTICES. The reason publication of legal notices is required in newspapers is YOU, the citizen. In a democracy, the government is required to inform you of the public business, because you and your neighbors are the basis of government. These notices provide essential information about all local government entities including schools, cities, villages and counties.

Whether you’re starting a new business or are looking to expand, we’ve got the expertise it takes to help you thrive in today’s competitive business climate.

A democracy is a system of checks and balances. Your right to be informed is a check on government. Public notices shed light on the actions of all government bodies--but it’s up to you, the citizen, to read them and obtain more information on the actions that have an impact on you.

Call us today and let us construct a winning plan for you.

THEY’RE CRUCIAL TO DEMOCRACY.
