G’dale grapples with charitable requests as funds dwindle By Chris McHenry Contributor Faced with dwindling funding and rapidly increasing requests, Greendale officials will try to find a way to continue their annual program of donations to various community organizations. With representatives of five additional organizations anxious to present their requests at the April 13 council meeting, it was revealed the city’s $15,000 annual donation budget already is down to $5,000. Council members were in agreement with Mayor Alan Weiss they do not want to turn people away, but there is a need to scale down. However, they approved a $750 donation to Destination Imagination, purchased two banners honoring Lauren Hill from the Lions Club youth baseball program, and approved $150 for Elks Club projects. Member Scott Libbert voted against the Elks Club donation. Mayor Weiss will meet with Dearborn Adult Center Director Marie Edwards in an attempt to work out a solution to the center’s request for $3,000 to $5,000. No one was present to discuss a request by Explorer Post 681 so it was not considered. Greendale Redevelopment Director Al Abdon reported he is optimistic a portion of the proposed extensive renovation of the US 50-Interstate 275 and Ridge Avenue area will be funded by the Indiana Department of Transportation in its 2021 schedule. Council approved a new annexation ordinance for an area near US 50 and I-275 after an error was found in the land description used in the original annexation last year. Weiss read a resolution of respect honoring Mike Sullivan a longtime member of the Greendale Board of Zoning Appeals, who died earlier this month. At the board of works meeting preceding council, two more speed limit devices

Staff Report For 16 years, Aurora’s Linda Armstrong has battled Parkinson’s disease, but not just for herself. As advocates to find a cure, Linda and husband, Dave, have been meeting with lawmakers on Capitol Hill for 11 of those years. They recently returned from Washington, D.C., in their ongoing fight to keep lawmakers passing legislation and approving the funds to put down the debilitating disease with which more than a million Americans

suffer. It has taken as many years of hard work for Linda and Dave to get on a first-name basis with some of the busiest people on Capitol Hill. “It is normal to show up for an appointment and have 10 to 15 people in line to see the same member of congress,” said Dave, who said lawmakers greatly appreciate that he and Linda operate by appointment only. Parkinson’s is the second leading cause of death from a neurological disease, and the leading cause of death
from neurological disorder. “It would certainly be an understatement to say that advocating for anything on Capitol Hill is an experience. After 11 years of effort and success, we are no longer intimidated by the people or the process,” said Dave. Parkinson’s Action Network and its grassroots leaders represent the Unified Partners Program. The network includes The Michael J. Fox Foundation for Parkinson’s Research, The National Parkinson Founda-
tion, The Parkinson’s Disease Foundation, The Parkinson Alliance, American Parkinson Disease Association, and The Davis Phinney Foundation For Parkinson’s. The organizations provide a third of PAN’s budget, the remaining two-thirds comes from grassroots fundraising, The Mark K. Udall Foundation, patrons, activists, corporate donors, and trusts. Joshua Batchelor, 36, was convicted in the Dearborn County Superior Court 1 Tuesday, April 12, after a one-day jury trial, according to the Dearborn and Ohio Counties Prosecutor’s Office. The jury found Batchelor guilty of Invasion of Privacy, a Class A misdemeanor. The jury heard testimony that Dearborn Superior Court 1 had issued a protective order in September 2015 barring Batchelor from contact with his ex-girlfriend. Despite the protective order, Batchelor was found to have sent two letters to her Dec. 31, 2015, from Branchville Correctional Facility, where he was serving time for burglary. Dearborn-Ohio Counties Deputy Prosecutor Jeffrey Wilson represented the State of Indiana, and the investigation was completed by Greendale Police Sgt. Kevin Turner. Dearborn-Ohio Counties Prosecutor Aaron Negangard praised the jury for sifting through the document-intensive evidence introduced at trial, as well as the victim for coming forward and testifying. Sentencing is scheduled for Wednesday, May, 4 before Judge Jonathan N. Cleary, who presided over the trial.
Peggy flew Lawrenceburg to new heights nationally By Chris McHenry Contributor The strange looking vehicle displayed behind glass at Second and Front streets in Lawrenceburg was once famous throughout the United States. The original “bucking Ford” was crafted by Ed “Dutch” Boyles of Guilford after he read an article in Popular Mechanics Magazine in 1935. Speed and alcohol may have contributed to motorcyclist’s death Excessive speed and alcohol may have played a factor in a fatal crash that killed a Guilford man during a weekend motorcycle ride to benefit the Rabbit Hash General Store, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Department. Chester Morling, 46, Guilford, was riding his Harley Davidson on Kentucky Route 338 in Union when he crossed the centerline, and hit a pickup truck in the opposite lane. Morling was pronounced dead at the scene. Deputies said he was not wearing a helmet. Morling’s motorcycle was in the opposite lane when another Harley, driven by Robert Cook, 36, Florence smashed into it. Cook, who was riding behind the pickup truck, was transported to University of Cincinnati Medical Center with non-life threatening injuries, said police. David Esparza, 55, and Kathy Esparza, 57, both of Portland, Ind., were not injured. “Preliminary investigation revealed Morling had just participated in the charity ride fundraiser for the Rabbit Hash General Store. Speed and alcohol are suspected in the collision, according to the Boone County Sheriff’s Office. The motorcycle ride was among several fundraisers for the historic Rabbit Hash General Store, destroyed in a February fire.

FOLLOW-UP
Are we living in the heyday of power plays? The incessant world of Lawrenceburg politics is enough to drive St. Peter over the edge. An episode last week during the city’s redevelopment commission meeting is as funny as it is serious. Here’s the deal. The meeting was long and tedious. That’s OK. The boys were busting to vet the issues, which you can read about later this week. The self-evident issues, however, often belied the political ones. Commission members spent the night pushing and shoving for decision-making and money management control. From my perspective, commission member Tony Abbot has it dead right, but nobody seemed to be listening except for city attorney Del Weldon. As it stands, the current board of works’ framework is skewed to give Mayor Kelly Mollaun the iron hand. He cut the board from five to three members, including himself, so he would always get his way if the other two members disagree. For what the method gains in efficiency it loses in accountability. Abbott went to the well five or six times,
making it painfully obvious that if money for redevelopment comes from the redevelopment budget then the BOW should have no say in the decision-making despite its customary roles. The issue at hand is a $95,000 study (yes, another one of those) to determine how to develop the JOE riverfront. I have no issue AWAD with developing the riverfront. It’s the city’s most valuable asset.
Power issue
The underlying power issue, however, must be addressed; it is a full-blown mess. Somewhere in Lawrenceburg’s “admirable” political history some administration and/or council - and I don’t care which - decided all redevelopment commission decisions should be approved by council even though redevelopment has its own budget and does the heavy lifting. City Attorney Del Weldon has said, more than once, the council vote is unnecessary
and probably illegal. Nevertheless, council keeps going through the motions. It’s going to cause a mess, sooner or later if a solution is not found. The explanation that surfaced several times at the redevelopment meeting is that council’s vote creates another level of accountability, but it is the opposite of what it appears. I zealously back accountability, but the present BOW structure is not accountability. It is shenanigans. And something tells me the council ratification system regarding the redevelopment commission had more to do with power than accountability. Also, the law, as Weldon reads it, makes the redevelopment commission accountable to citizens for the public money it votes to spend. There you have it. Keep in mind, the redevelopment vote initially was 2-2, requiring board president Mel Davis to break the tie. Abbot voted yes, stressing he does not want to impede progress but insisted he does not want to entrust what could eventually be a $20 million riverfront development in the hands of three people, which puts most of the power in the
mayor’s hands even if some decisions go to council because they would go with a favorable recommendation. Many cities employ super majority rules, but not Lawrenceburg. Let’s say a five-member board approves an issue 3-2, then council must pass it unanimously to carry. If the board had a super majority of 4-1, then council could pass it with a simple majority. Now that’s accountability! The Lawrenceburg situation sounds much like the executive order controversy that surrounds the president and Congress, and the GOP has been barking about that for eight years. Government requires layers - checks and balances - to keep too much power out of a single person’s hands. As I write this column, the Monday night council meeting lists “redevelopment ordinance” as part of the agenda. Here’s hoping it is the answer to the ongoing problem. Abbott is asking for nothing more than fairness. Joe Awad is managing editor of Register Publications.
Antique market begins 4th decade
The Tri-State Antique Market will begin its 2016 season of six monthly sessions on Sunday, May 1. The date also marks the start of the event’s fourth decade of operation at the Lawrenceburg Fairgrounds. Within a few years after its beginning in 1986, the seasonal show and sale had grown into“Indiana’s largest antiques and vintage Market,” and has been presenting an ever changing line-up of between 200 and 250 dealers at each session since the early 1990s. Shows are held on the first Sunday monthly from May through October. More than 20,000 shoppers made this their treasure hunting destination during the 2015 season. The sales are widely regarded by retailers, renovators, collectors, and home decorators as their first-choice source for

fresh-to-the-market antique and vintage goods gathered from regional estate sales, house buyouts, yard sales, and auctions. As decorating and collecting tastes have changed over the past 30 years, Tri-State Antique Market dealers have responded to offer the trendiest in vintage styles right alongside traditional classic examples. Industrial artifacts, urban chic décor, and midcentury modern furnishings are now shown right next to historical Americana, advertising memorabilia, antique toys, vintage house wares, country primitives, 19th century lithographs, and Victorian jewelry. The five-acre park offers plenty of free parking, paved walkways, contemporary restrooms, large covered pavilions, and local food vendors at all four corners of the midway.
Tri-State Antique Market hours are from 7 a.m. to 3 p.m. Earlybird shoppers are admitted during vendor setup at 6 a.m. A walk-in $3 admission for folks over age 17 is charged at all times. Children and attended pets are welcomed. More than half the vendors display indoors or under cover, so the event is held rain or shine. EC errors the difference in SD win
Lady Knights fast-pitch now 8-1, 3-0 EIAC BY JIM BUCHBERGER Sports Editor
AURORA - Maybe the sunlight blinded them after a week of dreary cold and rain interrupted the early spring high school softball schedule. Back in action under bright, pleasant conditions Thursday, South Dearborn softball capitalized on a pair of dropped balls in the East Central outfield for a four-run third inning, en route to its third conference win, 6-3. Coach Tim Barrett's Lady Knights, now 8-1 overall, were outhit 9-4 by C.J. Combs' county rival EC crew, which evened its mark at 3-3 and went to 1-2 in Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference play. SD senior right-hander Megan Meyers pitched another efficient win, shutting out the visitors through six innings, ultimately allowed three earned run on nine hits with three strikeouts and no walks. Knights grabbed the 1-0 lead in the home second on a leadoff single up the middle by sophomore Kennedy Miller and freshman Graci Cornett's fly ball RBI double to right with one down. The game turned in the South Dearborn third, when the hosts plated four unearned runs off formidable EC sophomore righty Becca Dudley, charged with the loss despite allowing one earned run on four hits, with a walk in 2-2/3 frames. SD sophomore Bree Smith, the Knights' No. 9 hitter, reached on
a dropped pop fly to right-center field. Junior speedster Hannah Lunsford walked on four pitches. Freshman Brooke Huddleston smacked a first-pitch single to score Smith, and both runners advanced on a fielding error on the same play. Lunsford trotted home on Tara Bailey's sacrifice fly to left. Miller pulled a base hit down the left field line to scored Huddleston, moved up on Taylor Slayback's ground out to shortstop and came home on Cornett's dropped fly by to right. Freshman Maddy Hamon came on to relieve Dudley at that point and got the final out in the third on a ground ball to short. Lady Knights upped the lead to 6-0 in the fourth with an earned run off Hamon, scoring with two outs on a double by Lunsford and a 1-0 RBI base hit by Huddleston. South Dearborn went down 1-2-3 in each of its final two at-bats, but East Central got a rally cooking in the top of the seventh. No. 8 hitter Claire Campbell got it started with a one out single. Junior leadoff batter Hannah Richter smacked a two-out base hit. Purdue-bound senior Tayler Wullenweber lined the first pitch she saw for a two-RBI double to right field. Sophomore Kaitlyn Zillick's follow-up two-bagger scored Wullenweber to make it 6-3 as EC fans howled. But SD's Meyers composed herself to get the final out of the game on an 0-2 fly ball to center. “Take away our outfield errors and we win 3-1,” said new EC head coach Combs. “I think our conference is going to be a tough battle, you know. We hit the ball right at them, but they they capitalized on our mistakes. That's what good teams do.” Lady Trojans' boss, a former

“They are both still so young, so our future looks bright.”
Knights make 2 hits count for 4-1 victory BY JIM BUCHBERGER Sports Editor AURORA - Trailing East Central 1-0 through 4-1/2 innings, while stranding seven of their own baserunner, frustration was running high for South Dearborn baseball in Thursday night's conference showdown. Coach Jay Mallot's Knights appeared on the verge of wasting another strong outing by junior left-hander Alex Smith. East Central (2-3, 0-2 Eastern Indiana Athletic Conference), coming off an 8-4 league home loss to Franklin County, had a no-hitter in progress by junior righty Ryan Mitts, who had issued several walks, but repeatedly worked out of jams. Then came the home fifth, JIM BUCHBERGER/Journal-Press when SD (now 2-4, 1-2 EIAC) Junior lefty Alex Smith got the victory for another strong outing in South Dearborn’s crossed the plate four times to 4-1 win over East Central Thursday, tossing a complete-game four-hitter with five lock up its first league win of strikeouts.
the season, 4-1. Senior DH Josh Schwarz walked and freshman Ethan Getz beat out an attempted sacrifice bunt. Sophomore Brady Fentress's sac bunt was successful, moving both runners into scoring position. UC-bound Knights senior Wyatt Schwing followed with the hosts' first real hit of the day, a two-RBI single to put his team in front for the first time. Classmate Caleb Rudisell stroked a one-out double to score Schwing, then scored himself later on one of the Trojans' four errors, off the bat of Chase Pfeffer, for the 4-1 advantage. Errorless baseball by South Dearborn helped Smith (7 innings, 1 earned run, 4 hits, 5 strikeouts, 3 walks) close out the complete-game victory. Mitts, replaced after 4-1/3 innings by junior Sam Sehlhorst, took the loss, finishing
with a line of four runs, two earned, two hits, six strikeouts and six walks. Sehlhorst, the move-back from Cincinnati Elder, posted all zeroes in throwing EC's final 1-2/3 innings. East Central plated its only run off Smith in the top of the first inning Thursday, with leadoff batter Jesse King singling and coming home on junior catcher Josh Wilson's sacrifice fly. Sophomore Brad Jennings and juniors Jack Marro and Sehlhorst had the other Trojan hits, with Marro adding a stolen base. South Dearborn may not have hit the ball until late Thursday, but it disrupted things on the basepaths with four steals, from Fentress, Conner Coghill, Rudisell and Getz. EC's Trojans left a total of five baserunners aboard to seven for the Knights.
Westerfeld wins from 5th starting spot Staff Report LAWRENCEBURG - Former track champion Shawn Westerfeld was fast all night in Saturday’s Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint Car 25-lap feature at Lawrenceburg Speedway. The Guilford veteran took the green flag in his No. 89 car from the fifth starting position and ended the night in victory lane. Indianapolis driver Nick Bilbee started on the pole and quickly pulled away and had the race in control until the race’s first yellow came out and Bilbee realized he had a flat left rear. Bilbee steered the No. 17 car to the pits and was able to rejoin the race, but was unable to contend for the win. That gave Wapakoneta’s Mike Miller the lead for a few laps in the No. 82 car until Westerfeld was able to make the move for the top spot and pull away for the win. Near the end of the 25 lap feature, Rushville’s Garrett
Abrams was running the high side in the No. 32 car, and may have challenged for the win if he had more time. Abrams wound up third behind Westerfeld and Miller. The rest of the top five were Indy’s Jarrett Andretti and defending champ Joss Moffatt. Sprint car heat race winners were Miller and Westerfeld. Kelsey Chevrolet Sprint Cars return to Lawrenceburg this Saturday, April 23. Kramer dominant Hanover’s Joey Kramer and defending Modified track champ Matt Hamilton started alongside each other on the front row in Saturday’s Budweiser UMP feature. The start and restarts are so important when two of the best drivers start alongside or nose to tail. Kramer got the lead at the start of the race and was never challenged, dominating the 20 lap feature race. Aurora’s Hamilton was able to hold on to second, followed by Greensburg’s
Kyle Herbert, Harrison’s David Spille and Sunman’s Kyle Schnornick. Mods heat race winners were Spille and Rising Sun’s Scotty Kincaid. Budweiser UMP Modifieds return to Lawrenceburg this Saturday, April 23. McRoberts thriller The two cars to beat in Saturday’s Impact Sports Pure Stocks feature were No. 11, driven by longtime Aurora veteran and track champion JD Largent and the No. 55 of Madison’s Will McRoberts. Largent took the lead early and looked to be dominant in the No. 11 car. McRoberts, a multiple time track champion himself, caught Largent’s No. 11, and the two cars made contact several times while battling for the lead. Nearly wrecking several times, both drivers were able to keep their cars facing in the right direction as they battled, lap after lap, for the lead. The caution flag slowed
the field with a few laps to go, setting up the ultimate showdown between Largent and Will McRoberts. What they didn’t realize is that Corebin McRoberts, Will’s son, driving the No. 5C car, also was vying to race with the leaders. As Largent and the senior McRoberts battled it out, Corebin was able to pass both of them and hold on for his second career feature win at Lawrenceburg. Largent finished second followed by Will McRoberts, Chris Combs of Ross and Aurora’s Steve Upchurch. Pure Stocks heat race winners were Rising Sun’s Don Grace and JD Largent. Impact Pure Stocks return to Lawrenceburg this Saturday, April 23. Smith holds on Richmond’s Dalton Smith is always a contender for the win in his No. 3D Hornet car. Saturday night, he started from the pole and quickly took the lead in the 12-lap feature, looking like his was

Versailles’ Gage Clark, who ran second on opening night, caught Smith and passed him for the lead. It appeared Clark’s No. 49 car was much faster than Smith’s. But, as the laps wound down, Smith was able to drive underneath Clark and beat him back for the feature win. Gage Clark was second for the second race in a row, followed by Guilford’s Chris Freidhoff, Harrison’s Tim Baird and Dupont’s Andrew Roark. Hornets heat race winners were Smith, Friedhoff, Roark

L'burg baseball offense erupts after first loss Staff Report CINCINNATI - Ranked No. 8 in this week's Class 3A poll, Lawrenceburg baseball bounced back from its first loss of the season, 1-0 to Ross (Ohio) last Tuesday, with fourstraight wins through a productive weekend. Now 7-1 overall, coach Nick Tremain's Tigers exploded to outscore opponents 53-10 in four wins in which they tallied double-digit run totals, starting with Thursday's 14-1, five-inning romp at Oldenburg Academy. LHS scored 10 times in the first three innings in Friday's 11-1 runrule victory over visiting Jac-CenDel, also in five frames. Saturday's doubleheader games at Cincinnati Western Hills proved just as explosive offensively. Tigers rode a nine-run third inning to a 15-6 game one victory over Taylor (Ohio) in the full seven. Against West High's host Mustangs in the nightcap, Lawrenceburg crossed the plate eight times in the first three innings to emerge victorious, 13-2. Senior Adam Lang pitched a complete-game two-hit victory vs. Western Hills, allowing no earned runs with three strikeouts, three walks. Clay Woeste went 4-5 in the cleanup spot with two RBI, while Eli Helton was 3-5 with two RBI. AJ Mueller and Noah Hummel both doubles as LHS rapped out 16 hits. Junior Austin Bowling doubled twice in 3-5 at bats and drove in three runs in the Tigers' 15-6 win over Taylor. Lang, Jordan Houze and Hummel also doubled and Helton tripled en route to a total 13 hits. Grant Bradley pitched 2-2/3 innings for the win. Leadoff batter Ben Murphy went 3-4 with a double, while Helton carded four RBI and Hummel 3 as LHS totaled 11 hits against Jac-Cen-Del Friday. Helton threw the five-inning two-hit victory, striking out eight with three walks. Lawrenceburg's sudden offensive outburst began with Thursday's 13run, five inning win over Oldenburg at Batesville's Liberty Park. “Our last three games have been all about pitching and defense,” said Tremain. “It was nice to bust out offensively and score some runs. After adjusting and staying back on the baseball, we were able to get hard hit balls up and down the lineup.” Tigers got a monster game from sophomore Eli Helton, who went 3-3 at the plate with a double and and a two-out, three-run home run in the fifth frame for a total of five runs batted in. “Helton's home run was very high, over the 375 sign in left center,” Tremain noted. “It bounced in the middle of the street. He really stung it.” Lawrenceburg baseball found favorable weather last Tuesday to make up its scheduled interstate battle with Ross (Ohio) as part of the Cincinnati Reds Skyline Chili Futures High School Showcase. Part of the 92-team Showcase, currently running April 2-30 at various sites around the Tri-State, the makeup of the previous Saturday's frozen-out contest resulted in the 1-0 win by the Rams, then 9-3 and 3-0 atop the Southwest Ohio Conference heap. Coach Jason Rettinger's Ohio crew got a combined three-hit shutout from hurlers Thomas House (4 innings, 3 hits, 6 strikeouts, 2 walks) and Dylan Houlihan (3 innings, 0 hits, 3 strikeouts, 0 walks), both juniors. The only run of the game came in the top of the second inning on a solo leadoff home run to left field by Rams senior first baseman Austin McKee, who went 3-3 at the plate for the only multiple-hit game by either team. Lawrenceburg junior Bradley took the hard-luck loss despite registering nine strikeouts over his six-inning shift. The 6'3” right-hander scattered five Ross hits and walked one batter, throwing 61 of hit total 91 pitches for strikes. Bradley issued 16 first-pitch strikes to the 23 batters he faced.

knowledge of the congressional process; a working understanding of the bills on the House and Senate floors; professional, sensitive and consistent approach to justify the funding needed for continued research and finding a cure; and the ability to communicate, while demonstrating concern for the Parkinson’s disease community. NIH requested $34.5 billion for Fiscal Year 2017. As the largest bio-medical research organization in the world, it funds research grants in all 50 states. Indiana’s NIH funding during FY 2012 created more than 4,500 jobs, providing grants to IUPUI, Indianapolis, and Purdue University, West Lafayette. NIH grants are used to identify and develop medical discoveries to improve lives. The Federal Food and Drug Administration requested $2.85 billion. “The FDA must streamline the approval process of

along with updates on Indiana Main Street, Community Readiness Initiative, Hometown Collaboration Initiative, and Stellar Communities Designation Program. Schomacker first addressed the Indiana Main Street program which has a four-point approach that involves organization, promotion, design and economic restructuring/vitality. In Indiana Main Street programs throughout the state, more than 229,000 volunteer hours have been spent. With that kind of dedication, great achievements are possible, said Schomacker. People need to pull together to create a common mission. Indiana is a state of untold stories. There is so much to offer, he said. Community Readiness Initiative helps community that know they must do something, but are not sure where to start, said

putting tested and effective drugs into the patient pipeline sooner,” said Dave. “We must also increase the agency’s access to scientific and medical experts. And we must ensure that patients have an active voice in the decisionmaking process regarding drugs and their devices that impact the patient.” The FDA drug therapy and developmental pipeline starts with the basic research phase, funded largely by the public, NIH, and the Department of Defense. The phase has no determined time limit. “The transitional phase of research is funded by a mix of government and private resources. This area is greatly under-funded. The transitional phase can take from one to six years,” said Dave. The investigational new drug application appears between the transitional research and clinical development. Clinical development, which has three phases, is funded by industry and forprofit companies, and over-
seen by the FDA. Clinical trials can take from six to12 years. Meanwhile, the DOD has requested $20 million. About 80,000 veterans battle Parkinson’s. Troops have been exposed to a wide range of toxins and other external stressors, including traumatic brain injury, which may lead to Parkinson’s, said Dave. “Due to the Department of Defense Parkinson’s research program, the Veterans Administration has begun to recognize the linkage between TBI and the on-set of Parkinson’s disease. Parkinson’s research has also benefited the war-fighter and the broader public,” he said. Linda and Dave ask that every person improve their medical future by volunteering, and supporting organizations working diligently to find a cure for Parkinson’s and other neurological disorders. Schomacker. A lot of times, communities will come together to create a vision for the future, but, in the end, it becomes a compromise no one believes in, he said. The program helps guide communities on which direction to move forward to create economic sustainability, he said. Hometown Collaboration Initiative is a new program that did not exist just over two years ago, said Schomacker. According the OCRA, “HCI is intended for selfidentified communities of under 25,000 people or fewer that want to develop a new generation of local leaders; promote the launch, survival, and growth of small business and entrepreneurs; or enhance the natural and physical assets of the community.” Stellar Communities Designation Program is described as “a multi-agency partnership designed to recognize Indiana’s smaller communities that have
identified comprehensive community and economic development projects and activities as well as next steps and key partnerships.” It is not a grants program. It is for communities that want to become “rock stars,” said Schomacker. “It’s about knowing who you are and where you are going,” he said. The program helps communities reach goals in five years instead of 15 or 20 years, he said. Then there are the “old school” economic development initiatives such as Indiana Site Certified, sites certified for economic development, said Schomacker. When the phone rings from a company, a community wants to be ready to answer the call to meet its needs. Community leaders need to be able to speak with intelligence about topics such as soil borings. It is about being prepared and showing off how awesome you are, he said.
Parkside. Police Chief DeWayne Uhlman and Fire Chef Shannon Craig assured the board the devices will not impede emergency vehicles answering calls.
Meanwhile, Uhlman said the cost of two new police cars will be paid from money confiscated from drug dealers by the Dearborn County Prosecutor’s office.

DNR seeks input on fish, hunt, trap regulations The DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife wants to hear your ideas on fishing, hunting, trapping and other fish-and-wildliferelated regulations in Indiana, including special permits. Until Sunday, May 15, the public can use a convenient online form to contribute ideas and provide input on issues the DNR has identified for consideration. The form is at wildlife.IN.gov/7373.htm. “Got INput?” allows the public to comment on ideas put forward by the DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife as well as requests for rule changes from citizen petitions. The program also allows members of the public to propose their own ideas

past and future, said Holcomb. Indiana farmers have been plowing the soil since the state was only a territory. There are 60,000 farms in Indiana, 98 percent are family owned, he said. He wants Indiana to become the ‘Silicon Valley’ of the U.S. with innovations that attract global investments in a state known for its rich soil and quality water, said Holcomb. He also wants innovation and entrepreneurship to thrive among small businesses, he said.

Taylor and Bob Oberting. During the early days, the bucking car often was accompanied by George Chapman, dressed as a clown. Taylor bought the car for $500 in 1937, and the original vehicle soon boasted a huge replica of Pegasus, the symbol of Mobil gas, the brand sold by Taylor Brothers. For several years, the only way the operator could make the vehicle spin around was by physically pushing a pole against the

Input and ideas can also be mailed to: DNR Division of Fish & Wildlife, Attn: Got INput, 402 W. Washington St., Room W273, Indianapolis, IN 46204. This is the second year of the Got INput program. The first year, in 2014, more than 3,000 comments were received. After May 15, the Division of Fish & Wildlife staff will evaluate all comments and seek approval on rule changes to present to the Natural Resources Commission for preliminary adoption. No rule proposals would take effect this year.
As vice chairman of the Indiana Career Council, he wants to ensure vocational training is aligned with regional needs, so Indiana is ready for what comes its way, said Holcomb. “As jobs come to Indiana, we will have the work force that is ready to fill them,” said Holcomb. Indiana also should be proud of the part it plays in the country’s military, including its military bases and training facilities, he said. “I don’t know of a state more patriotic,” said Holcomb. “We hear time and time again there is a real cer-
tainty and confidence in State of Indiana.” The budget is in the black, $2 billion in the rainy day fund, and Hoosiers live within their means, he said. During the spring legislative session an infrastructure bill was passed that will allow Indiana to move forward on projects other states would have to delay or raise taxes to accomplish, said Holcomb. Still, the state faces challenges including unpredictable situations such as natural disasters and the drug epidemic impacting Hoosiers in every community, he said.
pavement, but eventually a mechanical means of spinning was figured out. When Bob Oberting joined Taylor in operating Peggy, the men formed a lifetime partnership. They began appearing in American Legion parades throughout the United States, mainly at Taylor’s expense, and traveled to 49 states before Taylor died in 1973 at 78. Peggy had been scheduled to travel to Hawaii that year, but after the loss of his co-driver, Oberting never drove again, and Peggy officially was retired. Plans were made to dis-
play Peggy permanently at the American Legion Home in Lawrenceburg, and in 1974 a glass enclosure that cost $14,000 was dedicated. Peggy remains there to this day, a reminder of the glory days when she was the center of attraction far beyond the boundaries of Dearborn County. Rivertown Tales is a regular event at Lawrenceburg Public Library. The next will be Tuesday, May 10, at 6 p.m. when TV producer Dennis Neary will present Take the River, his historical documentary about Southeastern Indiana.
