Welcome to the joint production sale of the Cloghala A2 and Knockychottaun B43 Charollais Flocks. We firstly wish to thank you for your interest in viewing this catalogue and hope the sheep we offer may entice you to Blessington Mart on Saturday 05 November!
The Cloghala Flock is the oldest registered Charollais flock in Ireland established in 1986, and the Knockychottaun flock was established in 1991 – representing a combined 67 years of dedicated Pedigree Charollais breeding.
Both flocks have always shared a similar breeding policy, maintaining a keen focus on the traditional Charollais breed traits of tight fleece, muscle and length, whilst ensuring that growth rate is also advanced. We believe selecting for these traits is essential, as these are the differentiating traits that originally allowed the breed to rapidly take market share from other Terminal sire breeds.
The sale offers an opportunity for the established breeder or new breeder wishing to start a nucleus flock, to purchase strong female bloodlines that have been bred to type for over three decades. We believe the hogget ewes and ewe lambs on offer are some of the finest females both flocks have ever bred.
We are confident that if you can attend the sale you will not be disappointed, as standing in Blessington mart will be over 60 females with back ends, length, tight fleece, width, natural fleshing and style – with the added bonus of many novel bloodlines which are not common in the breed
Viewing of the sheep prior to the sale is very welcome, and if you have any queries please do not hesitate to contact us and we will be delighted to assist. Additionally, as the sale is under the auspices of the Irish Charollais Society, all sheep will be inspected by the society on the morning of the sale, providing further confidence that the sheep are correct and true to breed characteristics. Welcome to the second ever production sale of the Cloghala flock. Established in 1986, it seems a long time ago when the first sheep imported from France to the South of Ireland, jumped off the lorry! Many things have changed since then, and even though the sheep have developed to suit the Irish demands, we have always tried to breed true to type, tight skinned, well-muscled easy fleshing sheep, thirty-six years later you can be the judge! We have always tried to combine the performance figures with the sheep, which is not easy, and have had the joint top price twice since the sheep Ireland sale began. Our breeding has also been prominent here with Cloghala Vincenzo sons selling for several of the better prices at the SI 2022 sale, and to €2000 at this year’s Premier. With Cloghala Commanche breeding a Premier sale Champion, and Dynamo breeding rams to €4200, we have manged to be in the rosettes continually. It is very pleasing to see that the flock has consistently been producing the goods for us and others, and return buyers keep coming. Coming off a heavily stocked commercial sheep only farm, these ewes must work hard for a living, and I am sure that sheep sold today will go on and do well for their new owners. The proven breeding lines go back a long way and perhaps offer that bit of something different. There is no flushing in the flock, so the sheep are very much individual. All sheep have also been genotyped and parental verified, so there is no doubt that what you see is what you get. I’d like to thank all the many customers of past and present and hope you find something to scratch the itch!

This 5 star 5 star ram was purchased from the pick of Kilian’s rams prior to last year’s premier sale. From the best female line in his flock, and with superb Sheep Ireland evaluations, he has done a great job. Producing sheep with great skins, good ends, correct and stylish he has been heavily used again this year. His top lamb this year was fifth in his class at the premier sale and sold to Douglas Shekelton for €1200. I’m sure his lambs will not disappoint anyone who has them.
Coming off the L.U Cracker and L.Ronnie line he was Neil’s top lamb last year, for both figures and looks. Being a March lamb coming in later in the season, he had some very promising lambs in March/April last year, and as a result has been given some of our best ewes this year. To back this up his SI stars have also risen to 4 and 5 stars, and I’m sure will continue to rise given his chance and his background. He comes with a serious carcass, super loin, and a great end.
Sired by £2000gns Wedderburn Peleus, and my pick out of the Reilly’s last premier sale pen, Mojo has become a great all-round sheep, with all the qualities a Charollais should have. With very different breeding, he has size, skin correctness and a massive lion. He has had a big influence on the flock, producing males to €2160 for Viking Solomon, and leaving classy milky well-made females. A really consistent breeder whose females I’m sure won’t disappoint.
Sired by North of England Champion stock ram Greenvale Star, and bought in Dungannon 2018, Top Tup has become one of the best rams we have used. Producing superb carcass, tight skinned correct sheep he has really left his stamp on the flock. Producing a 2nd prize winning premier ewe lamb to €1060, and a hogget ewe sold to Knockychottaun privately breeding a ram lamb to €2000 in her first year, and ram lambs Victorius sold privately to Peadar McGee, €1500 5th prize winner Vincenzo to Sean Godfrey and Express to name a few. It is very pleasing to see his progeny, both females and males continuing to breed in different flocks at the highest level.
Purchased in 2019 for €2300 for his power scale and length, he has complemented some of the more French type ewes in the flock as intended. Again his breeding is following through with €2000 Warrior breeding extremely well for Calhame, and producing stylish milky females. I think the combination of Hulk and new rams Wrangler and Warrior could be a very exciting combination.
The Knockychottaun Charollais flock was established in 1991 after an unplanned purchase of a ewe lamb from Derek Stein in Northern Ireland! Over the following two years a number of top ewe lambs were purchased at the N.Ireland Portadown Premier sale, including QY3003 from Drew Cowan. This daughter of Glenbrook Jarvis (15,600gns Breed record for >20 yrs) turned out to be one of the most influential ewes in the flock, with her progeny still consistently being top performers almost 30 years later. The ewe lambs were joined by 4 exceptional in-lamb French imported ewes from the H13, D8, V9 and X7 flocks, creating a strong foundation Flock.
In 1994 a ram of equal quality was purchased privately from Billy Brown (YNT 3008, Beechlodge Levi). Levi went on to win the overall All-Ireland Champion Charollais in 1995, and the same year we won the All-Ireland Champion ram lamb and 3 of 6 classes at the RDS – the flock was now up and running!
There are two primary breeding traits which we have selected for since flock startup – “Length” and “natural width”. But these traits must also be accompanied by correctness, natural fleshing and tight fleece. This breeding policy has been maintained over 30 years through the regular introduction of new French Bloodlines to the flock, which are then bred with Irish or UK bloodlines. We have purchased rams directly on-farm in France but also from the annual sale of ram lambs from the French progeny Test stations. Our current French stock rams were all purchased from the Test stations, and are some of the best we have imported.
The flock primarily focuses on selling rams from the yard, but we have attended the Premier sale on a regular basis over the years with significant success, having obtained the highest pen average on a number of occasions including most recently in 2021 where the flock averaged 2416 gns for 3 ram lambs. We have brought Hogget Rams to the Premier sale on 5 occasions, winning 1st prize 3 times and 2nd prize twice, and we have been placed 2nd in the Ram Lamb class on 7 occasions – having never taken that illusive red rosette! On the female side we have brought Ewe lambs to the Premier sale on 5 occasions, winning the class 4 times and 2nd once, in addition to winning the Hogget ewe class on one occasion.
The flock had one previous female production sale back in 2005, and the sheep went on to much success in many flocks, including lambs in the belly of 3 inlamb hogget ewes went on to win the Supreme overall All-Ireland Champion Charollais for Michael & Rose Finnerty, Champion Ram lamb at Roscommon

The hogget ewes and ewe lambs been offered for sale are some of the finest females that the flock has bred and in our heart we know we should not be selling them! – as its exceptionally difficult to find top females. However we also believe that a production sale must include sheep which truly represent what the flocks stands for. With that in mind, we also ensured that the service sires of the in-lamb hoggets were specifically matched as if they were been kept for ourselves.
In a time when it can be difficult to find new bloodlines within the breed, we believe these sheep offer an opportunity for both new and established breeders to purchase unique bloodlines that are not common with the breed. We do not believe in pushing sheep with feeding, instead the sale is an opportunity to buy 30 years of consistent breeding a type of “real” Charollais, with length, width, muscling, tight fleece and a touch of style.

All ewes are on the Covexin 8 program and will need their annual booster pre lambing.
Napoleon was purchased in France in 2017 as a ram lamb from the French National test station, having top 1% Performance figures. We selected him for his length, muscling and style, and he grew into a huge ram with exceptional balance and correctness which he passes on consistently to his progeny - both male and female alike. He is arguably the best stock ram we have had in the Knockychottaun flock. He has bred multiple stock rams selling to pedigree flocks, to a top of 4300gns and he bred the 1st place ewe lamb and Reserve Female Champion at the 2019 Premier sale (1050gns). His daughters are very milky. In the sale there are 5 Napoleon daughters and multiple granddaughters. Napoleon is also the service sire for 5 hogget ewes.
Chardin was also purchased in 2017 from the French National test station, where he was the 2nd highest priced lamb at the sale €1650. He had the 2nd highest figures for conformation out of approx 100 ram lambs in the station. Chardin is a real thick set ram and has thrown power, muscling and sharp heads to his progeny, with his daughters also being big milkers. He clicked very well with non-French bloodlines with Lot 5 and Lot 13 being typical examples of that! There are 3 Chardin daughters in the sale.
Pierro was purchased from Willie Gleeson at the 2015 Tullow Premier sale. He was the top priced lamb (1000gns) in a very strong Wexfo pen. His full brother was the Premier sale Reserve Champion the following year (2016). He was sired by a Lisfuncheon ram, son of the renowned Lisfuncheon Sambo, and his dam line
went back to a K2 French sired lamb which we had sold at a previous Premier sale to the Wexfo flock for 1500gns.
Pierro was a power of a ram with body, great tight fleece and strong head. He bred a number of stock rams selling to pedigree flocks and crossed very well with French bred females. Three of our 6 lambs at the 2021/2022 premier sale were Pierro/Napoleon crosses.
There are 4 Pierro sired hogget ewes in the sale, all out of French female lines.
Victorious was purchased privately from the Cloghala flock prior to the 2020 Premier Sale. He is sired by the renowned Greenvale Top Tup and from one of the top female lines in the Cloghala flock – going back to a combination of N8 Didier (French test station ram) and Bawnard Braveheart (All-Ireland Champion Aged ram).
Victorious who is a Sheep Ireland 5-Star 5-Star performance ram was purchased for his growth rate, tight fleece and correctness, specifically to cross back onto French bred daughters. To say this cross worked well would be an understatement! There are 5 exceptional Victorious hogget ewes in the sale which it pains us to sell, as these will be the first daughters of Victorious to lamb. There are also 5 Victorious sired ewe lambs in the sale and he is the service sire for 4 French bred hogget ewes.
Zola is the most recent purchase from France and was the Top priced ram at 2020 Test Station sale (2150gns).
Zola is a very stylish ram with strong shoulder, solid fleshing and deep back end. His first lambs which were born this year brought his style, tight fleece and were heavily muscled.
There are 3 Zola sired ewe lambs in the sale, including lot 58 which is a meat machine!

1. All animals must be put up for Auction, and sold in the order in which they appear in the Catalogue. Animals not presented in the Sale Ring, in catalogue order, will not be admitted to the Sale Ring until the end of the section of the Sale, for which they are entered.
2. The pedigree, history and description of each animal shall be guaranteed and warranted to be correct in all particulars, by the person whose name appears as Vendor but such animal shall be sold, subject to all faults. No liability whatsoever shall be undertaken by the Auctioneer, for the statements appearing in the catalogue. The Vendors who supply such statements are alone responsible for any error or misrepresentation.
2a. Ewes which are scanned in lamb on day of sale cannot be guaranteed in lamb beyond sale date nor can the number of lambs which they carry be guaranteed whatsoever.
3. Vendors must provide competent persons to take charge of their stock until the close of Sale, whether sold or unsold.
4. The animals shall be sold in Euros. There is no reserve in respect of dispersal lots. All sales subject to 5% commission, payable by the Purchaser.
5. Should any animal pass out of the Sale Ring unsold and be subsequently sold privately, the Purchaser shall pay the commission on such private sale, which must be booked into the Sale Office.
6. The Purchaser shall provide his/her name and address in writing and pay in full, the purchase money for each lot, at the fall of the hammer (if required). In default of same, such lot or lots, so purchased, may be put up for sale again immediately and resold.
7. No lot or lots shall be removed from the premises until paid for but each and every lot shall immediately at the fall of the hammer, be considered as delivered and be, and remain in every respect, at the absolute risk of the respective Purchaser(s) thereof and shall be removed from the place of sale at the Purchaser(s) expense.
8. Should any question arise, not provided for in the aforesaid Rules, Regulations or Conditions, the decision of the Auctioneer shall be final, from which there shall be no appeal.
9. All sheep are “on the market” on entering the Sale Ring.
10. There must be a minimum of two sheep for a show class at a sale. There must be two class winners for a sale championship.
11. A black ribbon around a sheep’s neck signifies that such sheep is a sale substitute.
12. Re-Runs – In each class any unsold sheep of the first five sheep offered for sale can be re-run at the end of the first ballot. Should there be only one ballot, then they will be re-run at the end of their class. Other unsold sheep regardless of ballot or class will be sold at the end of the sale.
13. Payment Terms: Cash or Banker’s reference for cheques.
The Irish Charollais Sheep Society shall not be liable for any statements made in this catalogue concerning a lot listed herein for sale, nor for any description, pedigree or warranty expressed or implied on it’s behalf, such information being supplied by the vendor who, in such capacity, is responsible for it’s accuracy.
