BVLGARI

A Sparkling Investment

There are countless reasons for owning a special piece of jewellery; it may be for its emotional value, or a desire to express oneself, to commemorate a special occasion or simply for its beauty. Whatever the reason, a Bulgari jewel can also become a real investment for life. Bulgari jewels are not only a girls’ best friend, but also an attraction for collectors and investors: over time, their value at auction has constantly increased; between 2013 and 2016 final sale prices averaged more than 120% higher than their catalogue estimate. Beyond the undeniable value that arises only by the fact of being a Bulgari Haute Couture creation, there are multiple points of interest that attract the Bulgari passionate to the major auction houses of the world. The value can be defined by being a historically interesting piece for its time, for the particular style or fashion-wave it represents, for its absolute uniqueness due to the gemstone preciousness or to

18

the magic aura it has thanks to the person who owned it. As the Jeweller to the stars, many celebrities have been wearing Bulgari creations, with their own glitzy stories to reveal. Some of the prices reached at auction for the jewellery worn by some unforgettable Bulgari divas were spectacular, demonstrating that a story behind a piece can really sell. In 2011, Christie’s New York held a sale of Elizabeth Taylor’s private collection, which set records for being the most valuable jewellery sale in auction history. Like everything in Elizabeth’s life, this sale defied gravity: she was the first woman to make $1 million for a movie, and the results at the auction were an extension of her record achievements. On this occasion, Bulgari reacquired seven pieces – today part of the Heritage Collection – that best represented Taylor’s predilection for the brand and her faultless collector’s eye.

Two of the most exquisite creations are the famous necklace of diamonds and 16 octagonal step-cut 60.5ct Colombian emeralds (ca. 1962) and the matching emerald and diamond brooch. Taylor received the spectacular necklace from actor Richard Burton on the occasion of their marriage. The very starting point of this jewel was a brooch - one of the first gifts from Burton, subsequently re-worked as pendant - which the actress loved so much that it was the only jewel she wore the day

they married. Another magnificent piece is the Bulgari sautoire featuring an octagonal pendant with a 52.72ct Burma sapphire and diamonds; this necklace was again a gift from Burton for Elizabeth’s fortieth birthday, as the unique shade of blue of the stone reminded him of her eyes. In May 2013 at Sotheby’s Geneva, a collection of magnificent pieces worn by Italian actress Gina Lollobrigida at the height of her fame, surpassed all estimates and set new records after they went under

the hammer. Among the 24 pieces to be auctioned, 11 were Bulgari pieces. The biggest attraction of the evening was a pair of extraordinary Bulgari diamond and pearl earrings from 1964, which broke the previous world record for a pair of pearl pendants, more than 5 times their estimated value. A new world record was set in June 2014 as a rare enamel and diamond wristwatch from 1965 was sold at Christie’s London for triple its estimated price. The auction record for a Bulgari Serpenti bracelet-watch was previously held by Elizabeth Taylor’s yellow gold and diamond version in December 2011. And the success continued at Christie’s Geneva jewellery auction in May 2015, a vintage pair of extraordinary Bulgari wristwatches. Despite the well-established international gemstone market, some truly unique creations of nature may take decades or a lifetime to be found, occasionally on the open market, sometimes an exciting find at auction. The Taylor Jewels from the Bulgari Heritage Collection feature some of the most unique gems in the entire brand history, considering that precious stones of this calibre are becoming rare and rarer in nature and in many cases can be found only on vintage jewellery.

But even today Bulgari sometimes succeeds in finding one of nature’s treasures as in an acquisition lasted 10 years of an extremely rare 500ct sapphire from Sri Lanka. The owner, reluctant to part with the rough gem, finally found the courage after 7 years to cut the stone for Bulgari. It took another 3 years and the loss of almost 400ct, to perfect the ultimate result. The final 125ct sapphire was an explosion of life, of a blue deep as the sea, with the highest quality for cut, colour and size. It became the undisputed centrepiece of the Loves’ Paradise necklace, part of the Giardini Italiani collection. The piece was sold to the first private collector who saw it, at an event held by Bulgari close to Florence in 2015. In one year it has already tripled its value, demonstrating how the High Jewellery of today, can become the valuable Heritage of tomorrow. Bvlgari Plaza Indonesia, Level 1 #133 – 157-158, Jakarta. PAULUS SUTISNA

Man on the Move

Paulus Sutisna, president director of Bank DBS Indonesia, steps into his office in a sleek suit and an avuncular smile, as he greets Registry Indonesia team during a photo shoot. The office has a vibrant atmosphere that reflects the dynamic of leaders and employees interaction. As a banker and business leader, Paulus recalls what it takes to climb him to the top position in his career. Started as a Citibank management trainee back in 1989, he then assumed the role of deputy credit administration head which allowed him to learn more about the bank’s organisation structure and policy. He moved to risk management and after two years, to marketing where he stayed for another few years and eventually became a team leader. Later, the 1997 economic crisis hit. “It apparently provides the best, yet most expensive training, for me and bankers in general. In time of crisis, we’re able to prove all the risk management theories. It’s also expensive because of the incredible impact to Indonesian economy,” he recalls. Paulus, who graduated from University of Technology Sydney, Australia, entered global banking when Citibank sent him to Amsterdam and returned to Indonesia to lead the Global Transaction Services (GTS) business. He then moved to HSBC before finally landing the leader position at DBS Indonesia in 2015. “When I first joined DBS in 2015, I had to build a team because it was incomplete. For me, people are the most important asset of the bank, because even if we’re extraordinary and willing to work for 24 hours, we only have two hands. What can we do? But if we have a good team and solid teamwork, then we’ll have effective result.” Last year, the team showed a favourable achievement. “Our revenue increased 55 per cent compared to the previous year and it’s not just about the numbers. We also received several awards in best employer category, including the one as the Best Performer award from DBS Group. This is because we’re concerned with the

Cover story July-August 2017 alt.indd 23

human resources, returning to the philosophy that people is the most important asset for the bank.” In leading the company, Paulus, who admires President Joko “Jokowi” Widodo, focuses on the employee journey because managing people isn’t just about providing technical guidance. “It’s how we treat them and the benefit we offer, we always try to create a joyful employee journey. As we care about our employee, we also care about our customers’ journey.” As DBS focuses on its employee, it starts to grow. Unlike other global banks, DBS isn’t a corporate giant, but the size, according to Paulus, is also its strength. Quoting the group CEO, Piyush Gupta, Paulus explains that DBS has a good financial muscle with just the right company size that enables the bank to be agile, quick and financially strong. Other banks may win in size but they are many challenges in other parts of the world like the U.S. and U.K. “While in DBS, we focus to grow. Indonesia is a focus country, we walk the talk, we invest and hire more people.” He dreamt to make DBS a top brand and with the solid team, it’s doable. Is that considered a success? “Success is different for each person. Some would say being rich is success, while others are satisfied as a manager. It’s hard to measure success. So I think, the best is to know what you want to do in life. It’s good to have ambition, as long as you’re not breaking the rules. Know your limit. I’ve never set a target to be a CEO. Personally, I only go where life takes me and I keep on learning while staying curious about things.” Curiosity is important because you will find the reason behind everything. For example when there is a banking policy, it’s good to know why and what’s behind the policy instead of just accepting and implementing it well into everyday work. Therefore, we can do necessary improvisation. “I always try to find challenges because life is more fun with them. Don’t be afraid of challenges and stay curious,” he advises.

8/18/17 11:23 AM

Cover story July-August 2017 alt.indd 24

8/18/17 11:23 AM

Curious is also what keeps DBS in line with the current development in banking industry. Actively finding out what’s happening and adapting to the change. “As a bank, function is always there because people will always need a bank, but we have to stay agile with the change and become the leader in the future by evolving and collaborating.” As a busy person, Paulus tries his best not to bring his work home. He would rather stay late and finish everything at the office. “Everything has to be balanced, not literally, but you have to set priority. Work will always be there, but what’s important is know what you should do first,” he explains, adding that his coworkers never see him bringing paperwork home. When he’s not managing people or overseeing the DBS Bank’s operations, Paulus rides his bike around. “I grew up in Bandung and when I was young, I rode my bike to school. It was in the 1970s and Bandung was still cold,” he reminisces. “Cycling is also the safest exercise because at my age, my knees won’t hold up with running. We can also escape far away from our routine on our bike, as we spend five days a week in an air-conditioned room. Biking helps us venture into the outdoor.” His hobby has also brought in networks. If he usually rides around his house in Bintaro at weekends, starting as early as 6 a.m., with friends. He sometimes ride in other destinations outside Jakarta, like in Padang or Bali. “It’s useful for networking. We can be healthy together while travelling. You can meet new people and today, many companies started to have bike tournaments.” But the place he would love to visit isn’t reachable by bike. Amsterdam is his favourite because he once lived there. It’s just like his second home. When he was there, Paulus and his wife had to learn to do everything by themselves. Moving abroad with two young children, aged 3 and 7 respectively, wasn’t easy, especially when it comes to school and education. There was a lot of adjustment they had to make. “Yet, my life in Amsterdam is memorable because “my experiences there taught me many things about adaptation. We have a lot of exciting stories that made us miss Amsterdam,” he says concluding the interview.

DAMIANI

Italian Style Elegance

For its 2017 collection, Damiani draws inspiration from Italy’s extraordinary heritage, from the company’s own roots and the brand’s unparalleled craftsmanship, all of which have made Damiani a true ambassador of Italian know-how worldwide. Creative expression and manufacturing excellence intertwine in the Margherita Collection, a precious tribute to the Maison’s ties with the first - and beloved - Queen of Italy, Margherita of Savoy. To her, Enrico Grassi Damiani - forefather of the family that still today, three generations on, manages the company innately associated with Italian jewellery excellence - dedicated a special jewel that however, he never had the chance to present her with. The history of Damiani began in 1924, when the first workshop was established. Some years later, Damiani became the official supplier of the House of Savoy. A symbol through the ages of pure and faithful love, Queen Margherita’s very name has always been synonymous with natural grace. Every woman rediscovers her innate regalness in the unexpected charm of this bouquet of light; feminine sensuality blooms either in the many shades of the precious stones that feature together in balanced colour contrasts, or in the absolute whiteness of the purest of diamonds.

The collection centres on its rings, which depict timeless, classic flowers with a measured hint of modernity. The result is a set of variously sized gems forming a 12-petalled corolla set around a larger central stone. The rings come in three versions: with an all-over diamond pavé set in white gold, for an enveloping sense of radiance; with brown diamonds set in elegant pink gold around a central amethyst; or with white diamonds set in yellow gold around a heart of citrine quartz. The collection’s earrings, necklaces and bracelets reflect the same themes, with a matching trim to enhance the three-dimensionality of each

jewel. The rings, instead, lend themselves to playful transformations into conceptual bouquets, alternating on the fingers of contemporary Damiani women. The amazing ability to transform opulence into splendour and the best interpretation of the all-Italian goldsmith’s art are resulting in a line of sculptural jewellery creations; with diamonds that reveal their exuberance in cascading flashes of light that gradually take the shape of a flower. The perfect alternation of corollas and petals gives rise to a play of light that highlights the profound and sensual essence of every woman.

FABERGÉ

An Expression of Feeling

Fabergé is the world’s most iconic artist jeweller, inspired by its experience and the current moment to create eternally original pieces that, when worn, convey breath-taking individuality. Fabergé Jewellery creations are made for a discerning clientele seeking the unexpected. In painting with the world’s finest coloured gemstones, Fabergé explores ‘a life in colour’, making pieces to be collected as future heirloom. In 1882 Peter Carl Fabergé took over his father’s very ordinary jewellery business. Together with his brother Agathon, he quickly transformed it into an international phenomenon. The success of the two brothers was changing the nature of the business. Out went the then fashionable style where diamonds prevailed. In came the design-led artist-jeweller with a penchant for colour through both stones and reviving the lost art of enamelling. They added objets deluxe to their repertoire, including objets de fantaisie such as the Imperial Easter Eggs, now regarded as pinnacles of the goldsmiths’ art. Today these are treasured in some of the world’s leading museums and private collections. The craftsmanship of all their creations was of the very finest standard. This formula of design and craftsmanship made Fabergé irresistible and the ultimate objects to own, as well as the gift of choice.

Through enduring originality, the finest workmanship and artistry Fabergé jewels act as timeless reflections of universal themes of nature, rebirth and love. Fabergé designs jewels for the contemporary women whose style is a timeless expression of her individual tastes. The Emotion collection in thoroughly infused with intense colour, exploring the intellectual and artistic richness of Fabergé’s world. The brand presents the new artistic Fine Jewellery pieces to the collection, which continue to push the boundaries of design and craftsmanship in true Fabergé spirit. These bold and daring jewels illustrate the Fauvist view of colour as an emotional force. The collection comprises painterly abstract compositions of random pavé work in blocks of vibrant colour and the finest coloured gemstones. The sculptural and three-dimensional creations capture the fleeting beauty of nature through their rhythm of line, form and colour, accentuated with the artistic use of coloured rarefied gemstones. The designs take inspiration from the legendary artist-jeweller, Frédéric Zaavy, whose jewellery echoed the cultural richness at the heart of Fabergé’s genius. The late Parisian designer perfectly illustrated and underlined Fabergé’s gift in seamlessly combining French sensibility with Russian soul. www.faberge.com

TIFFANY & CO. Fierce and Rebel Femininity

Since 1837, the masterpieces of Tiffany & Co. have defined style and celebrated the world’s great love stories. Back in 1926 the United States adopts Tiffany’s standard of purity – 95%, as the country’s official standard for platinum. This year, Tiffany & Co. introduces the Tiffany HardWear collection, with Lady Gaga in the new spring campaign. As fiercely feminine as the new collection, the legendary Lady Gaga captures the spontaneity and creative spirit of New York City. “I always want to be challenging the status quo. I love to change. It makes me feel alive.” Said Lady Gaga. Tiffany HardWear embodies the strength and spirit of the modern woman. Each design elevates the industrial and brings a chic and elegantly subversive aesthetic to the newest collection for Tiffany & Co. The collection elevates the industrial to embody the soul of New York City. Inspired by a unisex bracelet from 1971, the Tiffany HardWear collection builds on this design to include earrings, rings, necklaces

and pendants. Utilitarian yet elegant, Tiffany HardWear expresses the strength and spirit of the modern rebel. With its bold 18k gold pieces, including a chain necklace that features graduated links that shift in scale, Tiffany HardWear is a study in the purity of design. Inspired by the rebel within, Tiffany HardWear is as feminine and fierce as the woman who wears it. The collection features chain link and dangled sphere in Tiffany’s typical colours: yellow gold, sterling silver and rose gold. Tiffany HardWear wrap bracelet is adorned by dangling sphere and the brand’s characteristic padlock, available in 18 carat yellow gold and sterling silver – also available in loose chain necklace model.

Necklaces and bracelets of chunky rounded links graduate in size, each one finished with two solid metal balls. Some of these are hung with a detachable Tiffany & Co padlock and an oversized metal sphere, and can be worn as a long sautoir or wrapped several times around the neck or wrist. Another part of the collection takes the simple metal sphere and bolts it to the end of open cuff bracelets; suspends three of them, small to big, between two chains in a modern spin on the trapeze earring; or fixes them onto plain bands - glossy orbs that beg to be touched. This tactile element is at its peak in chunkier “dangle” rings, in which the balls flip from one side to the other as your finger moves.

EDWARD CHIU Perfection in Couture

Free of the anxiety induced by the weight of the millennium-old tradition of jade-making in China, Edward Chiu used jade of all colours — green, yellow, purple, as well as one of the defining characteristics of the brand: black and white. His designs have shapes more varied and intricate, totally unencumbered by the concern for cost; they are paired and mixed with a much greater variety of materials from gold to platinum to different gems and stones; they are drawn with straight lines and curves informed not only by the rich Chinese tradition of jewellery design but also by modern western traditions and styles; they use motifs derived from nature such as flowers, birds, insects and fishes since Edward himself was a native of Hong Kong’s famous Cheung Chau Island where, while only a half-hour trip by ferry separates it from Central, Islanders swim, sail, and drink in the midst of largely undiluted nature; and crafted by the most highly skilled hands right from within the Chiu family. Thus a black piece of rectangular jade decorated by platinum, to use but one of a great many examples, looks so new yet so beautiful and convincing.

For the jewellery couture collection, Edward Chiu embraces the likeliness of true love and Jade: bright, beautiful, valuable, and always in style. A perfect marriage needs no embellishments, but a prideful groom may give them to his bride nevertheless. With touches of glamour, ECJA Bridal Couture believes that each wedding dress and the jewellery has to be the perfect blend of functionality and fantasy; they are also unforgettable and flattering. Edward Chiu jewellery couture collection ensures perfection for the big day with elegance. Edward Chiu graduated from the Parsons School of Design in New York City, and this experience provided the final piece of the jigsaw puzzle that made Edward Chiu the brand, viz. bold innovations in the design of jade. Great designs are typically innovative in the way that it brings an initial sense of unfamiliarity even to connoisseurs; yet the greatest design brings nothing less of the innovations and originality while everyone seeing it for the first time immediately begins to wonder why nobody else is able to come up with it until now for something so obvious as soon as one is able to see it. Edward Chiu’s design falls into the latter, and infinitely greater, category.

RICHARD MILLE Inner Workings of Nature

No one can debate the hundreds of years of Swiss fascination with the art of fine horology that we all appreciate today. Yet, many will be unaware of the refined and equally age-old Swiss tradition regarding the creation of mimetic mechanical objects of art that imitate nature, thus blurring the dividing lines between artistic creativity and life itself. Exquisite miniature animal, insect and flower automata of all kinds were created in precious metals and lacquer work to amuse and delight royal patrons in Europe and throughout the globe. The RM 19-02 Tourbillon Fleur epitomises these traditions of horological artistry in a vibrant expression of watchmaking distinctive to Richard Mille’s vision of timekeeping in the 21st century. For the creation of this timepiece is a special flower, the Magnolia. This flower

38

was chosen as its existence marks millions of years on the earth even before the emergence of bees within the environment, flowering in an endless cycle of birth and regeneration. The Magnolia’s delicate appearance stands in sharp contrast to its strong organic structure and resilience in difficult environments. At the lower left of the dial on the RM 19-02, the Magnolia surrounds a flying tourbillon escapement with five delicate, handcrafted and coloured petals. Working either in passing, or on demand using the pusher at 9 o’clock, the Magnolia opens and closes with rhythmic regularity in a delicate kinetic ballet. Richard Mille chose to imitate nature in the most exquisitely extreme manner possible. The Magnolia does not just open, the entire

flying tourbillon with its stone set stamen actually moves upwards 1mm when fully opened, exactly copying the natural motion of the flower’s arching upwards of its stamen to increase its chances of pollination. Attention to details such as these exemplify the Richard Mille approach to watchmaking artistry on every level. A technical mastery lies behind this unique grade 5 titanium tourbillon calibre, a complex mechanism comprising 5 levers

surrounds the underside of the petals, and yet another system combined with a long pinion is used to raise the flying tourbillon and stamen upwards within the flower’s circumference – all using energy supplied by a separate, second winding barrel. As an added attention to the tiniest details, it is even possible to adjust the opening and closing cycle. The RM 19-02 Fleur is limited to a production of 30 pieces worldwide.

PATEK PHILIPPE Contemporary Casual Chic

Patek Philippe can look back to an uninterrupted legacy of 178 successful years in business, so it is not surprising that the suite of anniversaries is becoming denser. In 2017, the Aquanaut collection is celebrating its 20th birthday with an anniversary model while the ultra-thin self-winding calibre 240 movement can showcase its many facets with a number of timepieces presented on the occasion of its 40th anniversary. The future is unfolding with a new perpetual calendar watch featuring a timelessly classic “vintage” design, and also with the latest milestones in the “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” series that are united in a limited edition of the Aquanaut Travel Time. For the 20th anniversary of the Aquanaut collection, the manufacture is presenting the Aquanaut Ref. 5168G in 18K white gold, the first Aquanaut men’s wristwatch in 18K white gold. With a diameter of 42 mm, it introduces a new “Jumbo” size in Patek Philippe’s sports chic segment. The night blue colour of the dial that darkens to a subtly gradated black toward the outside. Its delicately embossed structure sets the stage for applied Arabic numerals in white gold that complement new luminous five-minute markers, also as appliques in white gold. It melds all of the hallmarks of traditional haute horlogerie with innovative high-

end technology. Merely 3.3 millimetres in height, the movement is so flat that even with its elaborate seals and gaskets, the complete watch is merely 8.25 millimetres thick. Its heavy central rotor in 21K gold provides ample energy. The finesse of the movement is just as noteworthy: Geneva striping, countersunk and polished bores, gold-filled engravings, and round-chamfered, polished edges that emphasize the shapes of the individual bridges. The second debut is the Aquanaut Ref. 5650 “Patek Philippe Advanced Research” in white gold in a limited edition of 500 watches endowed with the latest technical advances. Launched over 15 years ago, the Patek Philippe Advanced Research program stands out with two major innovations. The first one is the Spiromax® balance spring with a new geometry that delivers improvement of isochronism in vertical positions. The second innovation is a time-zone setting mechanism that reduces the number of parts from previously 37 to 12. It is not only thinner but also works without lubrication and wear. As a world premiere, both innovations are integrated in the Aquanaut Travel Time Ref. 5650 “Patek Philippe Advanced Research”. It debuts in a limited edition of 500 watches in 18K white gold.

BOVET

Journey to the Sky

The Récital 20 Astérium® seamlessly continues the tradition set by its illustrious predecessor, reprising the characteristic shaped case to present an unprecedented mechanical display that showcases the volumes and decoration of the timepiece. Pascal Raffy and the Bovet 1822 watchmakers offer the opportunity to explore the universe and the origins of time itself. The night sky was chosen to play the ‘starring’ role in this new exceptional timepiece. The sky map was designed to be functional, precise and intuitive all at once. With this in mind, the Bovet 1822 technicians opted to map out the stars and constellations visible from the earth on a dome of translucent blue quartz, on which they are laser-

42

engraved before being coated in super-LumiNova® to create a dazzling true-to life sky. To ensure utmost realism, the highest stars in the sky are depicted at the top of the dome while the lowest stars nearer the horizon appear on the periphery of the display aperture. The duration of a complete earthly orbit, which is known as a sidereal year, is 365 days, 6 hours, 9 minutes and 9.77 seconds, or an unchanging 365.25 days. For obvious reasons, the Gregorian calendar was obliged to round down the number of days in a year to 365 and to compensate for the remaining hours by adding an extra day every four years, giving us our leap years. While the Gregorian calendar is perfect for governing our everyday lives, it differs

REGISTRY INDONESIA

Watch BOVET July 2017.indd 42

by 0.25 days per year from sidereal reality before resynchronizing every four years. The calendars usually employed in watchmaking – perpetual or otherwise – are all based on the Gregorian calendar, and the use of such a mechanism to drive a night sky results in a significant cumulative error when displaying the time. While complex ingenuity went into developing the Astérium®, its mechanism and winding device are designed to be simple, intuitive and reliable, as can be seen by merely turning the timepiece over and looking through the transparent sapphire crystal covering the entire

movement. The central hand travels along a graduation indicating the signs of the zodiac, symbolised by the constellations in front of which the hand-engraved sun appears throughout the year. The seasons are also indicated further inside the timepiece, as are the solstices and equinoxes. Only sixty Astérium® movements will be manufactured across all versions, including requests for unique pieces. Collectors can choose from red gold, white gold or platinum cases, which can be customised by the Manufacture’s artisans.

Fairy-Tale Garden

On the occasion of the Baselworld international watch fair, the House presents its new Dior Grand Soir collection, comprising eight unique flower-inspired pieces. Heirs to Christian Dior’s love of plants, these watch creations turn the spotlight on flowers that seem to be growing and blossoming under the glass, prompting a shifting of the usually centred hands. Their dials, adorned with precious stones of various shapes and sizes, mother-of-pearl, opals and polished gold elements, testify to exceptional jewellery savoir-faire. The white gold cases covered in a pavé of snow-set round diamonds provide a precious frame for these unique flowers that attach to the wrist with a bracelet of midnight blue fabric. Faultlessly considered right down to their mechanism, these watches feature a quartz movement with adjustment corrector. The dial of a Dior Grand Soir Botanic with an offcentre movement at eight o’clock features blue, pink and yellow sapphires, emeralds, diamonds and rubies that evoke the falling of evening light. A more morning piece has its off-centre movement at two o’clock, and its flower adorned with pale sapphires, intense sapphires, emeralds, pink sapphires, diamonds and rubies. Dior Grand Soir Botanic No 1 is a one-of-a-kind piece of 36 mm quartz in white gold paved with snow-set round-cut diamonds case and white gold case-back with timesetting corrector. The dial is made of white gold paved with snow-set round-cut sapphires, set with round-cut pink sapphires, cabochon-cut yellow sapphires, round-cut and pear-

cut emeralds, pear-cut and baguette-cut diamonds, pear-cut rubies, and adorned with polished or opaline or lacquered gold elements. The result is a soft pink flower shape with yellow centre, on top of three purple shades background. Dior Grand Soir Botanic No 3, just like all others, is a one-of-a-kind piece with white gold paved with snow-set round-cut diamonds case and white gold case-back with time-setting corrector. The dial is adorned with white gold set with round-cut and marquise-cut diamonds, adorned with Australian

white opal, white mother-of-pearl, and polished or opaline gold elements. Dior Grand Soir Botanic No 8, uses yellow gold paved with snow-set round-cut pink sapphires and spessartite garnets, set with round-cut, marquise-cut and triangle-cut diamonds, round-cut pink sapphires and yellow sapphires, round-cut and marquise-cut sapphires, marquise-cut rubies, and adorned with polished or lacquered gold elements in the dial. Strap is in navy blue mesh-textured fabric with a white gold prong buckle snow-set with round-cut diamonds, and extra black satin strap.

MONTBLANC

Rebirth of Professional Watches

The Montblanc TimeWalker Collection symbolizes the spirit of racing and harks back to these instruments of glory by offering a line of new professional watches for the modern performer that take their inspiration from Minerva’s outstanding history. The renowned “Rally Timer”, a stopwatch that was created to time motor racing with precision, is the perfect example of this heritage. Minerva watches were the references in the field of horological innovation, with numerous patents registered over the years in the domain of precision timers, creating a legacy of savoir-faire. The new Montblanc TimeWalker collection represents a strong contemporary expression of the professional sport chronograph with a 43 mm case size that has become a standard size for Montblanc’s performance timepieces. From the case to the dial, from the movement to the complications, the collection focuses on masculine energy and a vintage-themed style, while combining performance, innovation, great legibility and robustness. In 1916, the Minerva Manufacture developed its famous 1/100th of a second stopwatch, which was further technically improved in 1936, putting Minerva on the map as the specialist of professional watches and stopwatches. Montblanc continues to innovate with the Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph 1000 Limited Edition 18, a mechanical chronograph that measures elapsed time to the 1/1000th of a second.

46

When an elapsed interval is being measured, the chronograph’s elapsed 100th of a second hand orbits the entire dial once per second. But rather than occurring as a smooth progression, this circular motion is sub-dived into 100 individual steps which the naked eye cannot distinguish from one another. The Montblanc TimeWalker Chronograph UTC, on the other hand, is equipped with the calibre MB.25.03 that shows the time in three different time zones. Local time is indicated with the rhodium-plated hands, and

the home time can be read via a dark central hand enhanced with a red arrow and SuperLuminova at its tip. The readings are accompanied by a 24-hour scale on the bezel. The local time is set via the crown, allowing a quick and simple adjustment of the time in hourly increments without affecting the functioning of the minutes. The date is synchronised with the local time. A third time zone can be easily indicated at any time by turning the unidirectional rotating bezel to the new time zone—the location of the 24-hour hand being the point of reference.

CHRISTIAN DIOR Classic Elegance

DIOR presents its ready to wear Autumn-Winter 2017-2018 collection in the fourth day of the Fashion Week in Paris, the second provided collection by Maria Grazia Chiuri, the Director of the Creative House of Dior, as she explores a romantic modern style of youth collection for the fashion house’s ready to wear collection. She explores a colour that was among Monsieur Dior’s great favourites. This collection boasts simplicity and sophistication, accuracy of details, luxury fabrics and accessories, with the colours being mostly black to blue. “Among all the colours, navy blue is the only one which can ever compete with black; it has all the same qualities, “wrote Christian Dior in The Little Dictionary of Fashion. Blue is the colour of the twentieth-century painting, as Maria is inspired in incorporating many of the basic elements in the collection. It has been combined with its own renaissance ideas that are mainly cantered on women, which seem to have been embraced by women from around the world, and also inspired her many thoughts of optimism and the spiritual sides as well. Blue truly fits for the work wear, casual and cocktail outfits. She also introduces a set of jeans for the younger women – blue in loose pants, blouses and

washed shirts, thus giving a new identity to the House’s colour story. Maria reinterprets the idea of the Chevrier look from the Haute Couture Autumn Winter 1949 collection in a series of jackets, skirts, dresses, capes, coats and small bomber jackets, by incorporating some luxury materials such as: taffeta, velvet, herringbone motifs and knit. Blue is also the colour and symbol of power, beauty and spirituality. The

colour is employed for genderless outfits and for expressing differences. It is positioned between nature and culture, as the colour of the spirit. Maria has absorbed herself in the complexity of this colour, with the complexity of blues music and its great interpreters, such as Nina Simone and her Blue Prelude, a nod to the femininity of a colour that unites the ocean depths with the infinity of the celestial vault.

BOTTEGA VENETA Hollywood Glamour

Bottega Veneta’s women early fall 2017 collection is a continuation of the Spring/Summer season focusing on lightweight materials and joyful colours. Earthy bright as ochre yellow, burnt orange, geranium red, china red and burgundy are off set by neutral powdery pastels and metal tones. A return to Hollywood glamour and an haute-sport aesthetic, the collection features sharp tailoring and ultra-feminine silhouettes. Rich embroidery, studs and prints are paired with elevated textures and distinctive accessories. Sharp shapes and luxurious materials elevate daily looks. A striking single-breasted coat in extrasoft matte deerskin features a distinctive double-slider belt, paired with the new city know bag in French calf. The silhouettes are sharp, precise, with lengths around the knee with an

occasional playful gathering and draping touch for the dressier items. Materials range from cottons and silks, to mohair wool, silk jacquards and various weights and treatments of leather. Prints are small geometric and not easily noticeable. In a dress featured in this collection, fluid silk georgette and artful pleating recall the elegance of the 1940s. Soft elbow-length puffed sleeves and sparkly embroidered anemone flowers define the silhouette. As usual, bags display the exceptional know-how of Bottega Veneta’s workshop. New techniques and craftsmanship’s are mostly displayed on the season’s moderate format bags. The City Knot showcases the seasonal desire in cement coloured Nappa leather. The versatile Small Noppia bag in Nero Nappa leather, intrecciato details gives a cool complement to a breezy,

Redefining Aesthetic Illusion

The extraordinary creativity, the most innovative techniques and the highest Italian craftsmanship from the Haute Fourrure reflect in this collection through sublime details for wonderfully crafted pieces. Ethereal romanticism meets rational modernism in Fendi Prefall 2017 Collection. Refreshing shades of orange, pink and white give life to a modern cocktail and evening femininity. Flowers blossom on organza dresses; romantic lace is crafted for charming frocks. Lightness is also celebrated by the fur offering of cape, coats and jackets decorated with an array of motifs, from inlayed flowers to dégradé stripes with a new special version of the iconic Cioccolatino fur in lurex and shearling. A graphic approach also influences the upscale fur coats, including a dramatic bi-colour mink cape combing short and long fur for a 3D effect. The collection’s magic appeal is enhanced by the optical illusions created on the surfaces of iconic outerwear pieces, such as wool and alpaca robe coat, printed to resemble lynx fur and embellished with a chinchilla collar. Signature themes like Flowers, Geometries, Studs and Pequin stripes meet new motifs such as the dégradé, fringes and multicolour micro fur pompons, all appearing in the bags and accessories. The Fendi essence, which perfectly combines luxury and daring creativity with playfulness and irony, vibrates into the new Back to School, a messenger bag showing a metallic chain which can be easily transformed into a practical backpack. GIVENCHY The Spirit of Rebellion

Following Naples, Givenchy has chosen Copenhagen to stage its new pre-collection: timeless nature inspired designs in futuristic architecture settings. Three iconic locations were selected to accompany each section of the Givenchy wardrobe. The Vega concert hall, conceived in 1956 by Vilhem Lauritzen, serves as backdrop for classic and elegant pieces. From tailored masculine styles with couture finishes, to lace evening dresses, camel hues and soft shades are enhanced with gold and yellow notes, referencing the warmth of Scandinavian woods. For this section of the men’s wardrobe, the suit is reinterpreted in a loose-fitting version with double dart pants, while strong qualitative fabrics elevate outerwear pieces. In a more urban vein, Riccardo Tisci created a line that brings together the spirit of wisdom and rebellion. For men, large embroidered coats meet jogging pants enriched with snap bands underneath jersey skirts. Women can mix a white shirt with a sporty jacket, a soccer jersey-style fur sweater and a mini skirt. Sportswear and couture, the essence of Givenchy’s style, come together here at the Hotel Astoria. Long, fitted-waist jackets over flared pants mark the collection’s fashion spirit, animated with contrasting colours or saturated prints (optical mandalas or floral). The superimposed effects highlight an idea of psychedelic nature that contrasts with the futuristic decor of a gas station designed by Arne Jacobsen.

The Givenchy denim wardrobe continues to grow. The stars of the women’s models feature pink on black, sparkle in metal on wide jumpsuits, or stand out on washed denim. Repainted in silver, faded into white, or simply aged, men’s jeans showcase the brand’s name in large, red and rubber letters. As for the colour tones, there are no boundaries for this collection. From bold blocking colours such as blood red and yellow, to the colour that currently dominates the world: the millennial pink. Pink nappa fluid dress and pink silk chiffon long dress, paired with bright pink mini flap

pouch on chain in textured leather, resulted in an entirely millennial pink look, made edgy by G-ometric multi round mirror necklace and G-ometric palladium mirror circle earrings. Another feature in the collection includes the Vintage Mandala Printed pattern and Sepia Mandala Print, applied to crepe de chine shirt, matte heavy crepe jersey jacket, trousers, Cady stretch skirt with pink and blue zip, pumps in calf leather, and Pandora Box Minaudiere in psychedelic printed leather. Further enhanced by the Pink Fox sleeveless coat.

GUCCI

An Anti-Modern Laboratory

Gucci comes up with The Alchemist’s Garden for the brand’s Fall/Winter 20172018 collection. From coleopteran, ladybirds, dragonflies to water lilies and bulls, the collection showcases numerous works of nature. There is a garden of plants and animals. The garden is inhabited by signs, symbols and archetypes invoking and recalling remote worlds. In this magic place, curious hands play with the matter, blending it with the unconscious. They mould it with subtle and joyful intuitions. As in an alchemic laboratory, the substances are selected, analysed, decomposed and treated. It’s a creative process with the beat of slow incubation and sudden epiphanies. It’s a process in which the power of imagination forces the inertia of reality.

58

8/10/17 12:16 AM

As alchemy tried to transform base materials into gold, what emerges here is a precious distillate, resulting from a dreamy process of transmutation of the matter. A transformative whirl that reassembles fragments, codes and stories projected on a fresh horizon of sense. A change of status where echoes and survivals, “repressions and returns of the repressed, repetitions and revisions, traditions and missing links, tectonic movements and superficial earthquakes” (G. Didi-Huberman) create the plot of a new tale. The alchemist’s garden is an anti-modern laboratory because it denies some of the principles on which is based a certain scientism characterised by rigidity and determinism. It’s the place where the deadly logic of noncontradiction is overcome. The place where the ambivalence, intended as possibility to welcome antithetic explanations of the real, is celebrated. In this frame, dualisms (man-woman, essence appearance, shadow-light,

immanence-transcendence, body-spirit, good-evil, inside outside), classifying approaches and strict separations deflagrate. It’s an operation directed to recover the complexity of existence where superimpositions and shades, apparent contradictions and false antinomies live together. To think of oneself as individual, in fact, involves the necessity to recognise oneself as a multiple becoming (G. Deleuze): a unity that shelters inside a “parliament of selves” (G. H. Mead), a multitude of identities, conciliatory and conflictual, known and unknown. This unity is well represented by an ancient Egyptian symbol, the Ouroboros: a snake eating up its own tail. A symbol containing any paradox: it destroys and conceives in a process of self-renewal that englobes the opposite. An androgynous, hybrid, spurious revolts that saps the foundations of the deadly rigidity of dichotomous thought.

ALEXANDER MCQUEEN Classic London Gent The wit, wisdom and beauty of Oscar Wilde as he journeys from Tite Street in London to Paris Saint Germain inform Alexander McQueen’s menswear collection this season. An all-over paisley print silk robe, an overcoat made in a jacquard inspired by antique rugs and gemstone rings all pay homage to the magnificent dandy. Two huge gold peacocks on a dark green background painted above Wilde’s bed in the room at L’Hotel on the Left Bank was where he spent his last days. They remain there to this day and are the central motif in this collection. True to the codes of the house, this Autumn/Winter 2017 collection is based around tailoring that is precise, elongated and cut close to the body. Shoulders are neat and peaked, trousers come in two distinct silhouettes narrow and straight-legged or flared, worn cropped above the ankle. Suiting

and outerwear are offered in classic designs of paisley, Prince of Wales and Tattersall checks to the more dandified, featuring jacquards with peacock feathers, vintage London street map, antique rug and a trompe l’oeil piercings design. Available in a classic or oversize fit, the collection explores a new take on the dress shirt to extreme proportions - cuffs are enlarged and undone, buttons circle the shoulders and elbows to give a decorative as well as a deconstructive function to the garment, juxtaposed with a Marcella waistcoat featuring adjustment straps that reach to the ankles. There is a hybrid Edwardian frockcoat/teddy boy jacket cut to fall just above the knee. It is finished in wool doeskin and offered in three rich shades of burgundy, mustard and French blue.

Derby shoes, fringed slip-ons and military boots are finished with a rugged sole and come in plain leather, a silver buckle or charm decorated buckle. Juxtaposed with aged Oxfords with a thin sole. Jewelled Victorian collectors’ rings, earrings, lockets, brooches, cufflinks and safety pins set with natural and ruby crystal, silk gazar feathers, enamel teeth and silver bottle caps. For the evening, the collection features tuxedos, smoking jackets and robes with a satin quilted revere in all-over paisley, bullion/diamante feather embroidered velvet and rug motif velvet jacquard. The dressiest looks in the collection – two ceremonial tailcoats with matching trousers, in yellow ‘fantasy’ damask or engineered bullion peacock embroideries. The finale outfit is a fulllength ceremonial cape, depicting a grander pair of peacocks embroidered in gold bullion thread, an ode to Wilde’s last remaining memories.

SAINT LAURENT

Dark Romanticism Fantasy

For Winter 2017, Anthony Vaccarello explores the paradoxes and tensions of a contemporary femininity as his debut for Saint Laurent during Paris Fashion Week. Shoulder sharp and structured, a flight-jacket dress in laser cut leather adorned with shearling contrasts the nonchalance of denim worn with slouched leather boots, portraying an effortlessly confident femme de jour. Key themes of this collection for men’s ready to wear include dark romantic, day wear, casual and evening. Evening is reinterpreted in intense matte black velvet that flirts with the indecency of ray crystal embroidery, accentuating her inherent allure. “I love Monsieur Saint Laurent’s subversive approach to clothes, his dark romanticism with a hint of perversity. I wanted this collection to be like a re-reading, a radical fantasy of this heritage.” There’s less rigidity to Vaccarello’s menswear compared to Saint Laurent’s previous collections. The drainpipe legs and skinny sleeves that have defined the SL look of late are loosened up in the form of roomy-but-tailored low-rise pleated trousers and leading man-level fitted outerwear, from shearling aviator, suede bomber to double-breasted topcoat. Here, Vaccarello embraces a black colour palette for the season with a reserved line-up. He shows his identity throughout the collection by proposing outfits consisting of only three to four premium garments, and accessorised with the consistent ‘less is more’ approach. Even touches as inherently over-the-top as rhinestones and beading were used with a measured hand, on the lapel of a shawl collar tux, as stripes on a relaxed-fit polo shirt.

August accessories include city backpack in

flamant rose printed canvas and black leather, city backpack with ecussons in black cotton and black leather, as well as Antibe pin’s mid top sneaker in white suede and leather with a sign that says smoking forever as a youthful rebellious icon. September to December key accessories showcase a more classic, mature theme in all black, work friendly ethic. From Large Sac de Jour Souple, backpack Sac de Jour Souple, to Hugo and Derby shoes.

A New Way of Perceiving Time

Eleven years after its launch, Orchidée Impériale has been reinvented for the fourth time, offering the best of research in the field of cell longevity. Capitalising on its previous innovations, Orchidée Impériale The Cream is not only exceptionally complete care, but it has also been designed to limit its environmental impact. Because women require much more from a skincare product than fighting the visible signs of ageing, Guerlain offers a real moment to breathe and restore inner harmony. Guerlain expert on research into orchids and their secrets of longevity has been constantly innovating for over 15 years. A new technology based on the Orchid Gastrodia elata, whose properties were discovered thanks to a one-of-a-kind platform, the Orchidarium, delivers an age-defying complex that acts on cell respiration. Guerlain is affirming its commitment to protecting orchids with the Tianzi nature reserve, where “rainforestation” takes place. In other words, the reconstruction of an entire ecosystem

66

prioritises biodiversity, to the orchids’ benefit. Protecting the environment remains a priority for Guerlain, and the brand has embraced a sustainable luxury approach particularly by reducing Orchidée Impériale The Cream’s carbon footprint by 58 per cent. As sumptuous as ever, the jar has been reworked, with lightened glass and eco-designed packaging. Guerlain Research discovered a crucial new mechanism: a cell with good control over the natural use of its oxygen will have better longevity. The fact shows that an excess of free radicals (an unstable, highly reactive form of oxygen) promotes skin ageing; therefore, cosmetic science uses antioxidants to combat these free radicals. However, it has recently been discovered that, on the contrary, oxygen levels that are too low compared to the skin’s needs – known as the phenomenon of hypoxia – will have consequences on ageing. By combining Gastrodia elata orchid with a glucan-rich natural

nasturtium extract, which encourages the supply of oxygen to the cells, this new age-defying technology offers the skin exceptional complete care that acts on all of the visible signs of ageing: firmness, density, radiance, wrinkles and fine lines, evenness and elasticity. In addition to fighting against hypoxia, this new technology will boost the cells’ vital energy. A specific new ingredient is making an appearance in this fourth generation: diamond powder, a rare raw ingredient chosen for its photoluminescent properties capable of capturing the invisible luminous energy received and then visibly diffusing it in all directions thanks to the diamond’s “facetted” appearance.

PAGANI

An Unbridled Work of Art

Pure beauty in all shapes and surfaces- this is the philosophy behind Horacio Pagani’s latest creation. From this foundation is built a masterpiece with a perfect balance of attention to detail and technological advancement. It is the combination of Art and Science: a founding principle and cornerstone to the philosophy of Pagani Automobile. This creed comes from the genius of Leonardo

72

da Vinci, who pursued perfection in form and function at every stage of the process. All Pagani creations are born from this relentless chase of beauty and passion. The Huayra Roadster represents an unbridled artistic showcase, featuring the most dynamic technology; this is Horacio Pagani’s open-air tribute to the gods of wind. The Huayra Roadster project began in 2010, with the ostensibly

simple idea of a Huayra Coupe with a removable roof and conventional doors, as was developed for the Zonda Roadster in 2003. Ten years later, in 2013, the design was scrapped and everything restarted from the beginning of the design process. The Pagani Huayra Roadster became a project independent of its predecessor, a car with its own soul.

“If we think of the Huayra Coupe as a personification of elegance and timeless lines, the Huayra Roadster was to be the rebellious sister, shapely and beautiful, but with a sharp edge for those who are careless. Horacio Pagani. Combined with a new form of composite material and developed for the Huayra Roadster, it is considered more advanced than

materials used for Formula 1 cars. This complex and highly ambitious undertaking has allowed for a 52 per cent increase in stiffness, at the same weight, thanks to the combination of the Carbo-Titanium and the Carbo-Triax HP52. The dry weight of the Huayra Roadster measures 1,280kg, about 80kg less than the Huayra Coupe, while also increasing in torsional flexional rigidity. The Pagani Huayra Roadster is powered by Mercedes-AMG M158 engine. The twelve-cylinder engine, built specifically for Pagani by Mercedes-AMG, has benefitted from the research and development done for the Huayra BC, delivering power of 764 HP at 5500 RPM, with a torque of over 1000 NM already available from 2300 to 4300 RPM. Four flaps, two in the front and two in the rear, together with the

front active suspension, work independently to ensure continuous optimum safety and a considerable performance in all conditions. The active aerodynamic system works to keep the bottom of the vehicle always parallel to the road, increasing the efficiency of the airflows above and below the car. Pagani Huayra Roadster will be fitted with two types of roof. The first consists in a very light carbon hard top with a central glass element, very simple and quick to install. In this configuration it assumes the look of a coupe, with a glass roof that provides the passenger a unique brightness, protecting them from UV rays and also giving a sense of freedom typical of a Roadster even with the installed hard roof. The second type of roof is a fabric and carbon cover that can be easily installed manually and can be stored inside of Huayra Roadster.

Malinda Furniture Gallery has been running the industry with the passion for and commitment to delivering products that meet customers’ ultimate satisfaction, achieved through their highly skilled and motivated team members. The gallery serves its clients through high quality brands in the furniture and lighting industry such as Flexsteel, Caracole, Bernhardt, Hooker Furniture, Michael Amini, Hinkley, and Uttermost among other brands, a total of 30 reputable brands from the U.S. to be precise. They come in a wide selection of styles and product categories including bedroom, dining room, living room, occasional furniture, home office, and home entertainment. The gallery is also taking on projects such as hotels, apartments, malls and office buildings highly customisable to budgets and design concepts. One of the gallery’s main features is the Chateau de Lago collection by Michael Amini. The collection is a combination of his proved best sellers

within his top collections throughout the years. The popular Blanc finish has a casual elegance as the collection name itself suggests a home on the Lake. The bombe shaped silhouette is reminiscent of old European charm and offers grand scale and refinement. The classical French Regency period was inspiration for this style of furniture, however Michael Amini has added elements that the 18th century French designers had not thought of such as crystals embedded in the hardware and a combination of velvet and cedar lined drawers. The carved embellishments offer depth and help provide character in the finish application, which resulted in a relaxed weathered glaze effect. The Chateau de Lago collection is available at Malinda Furniture Gallery Slipi showroom, Malinda Jakarta Design Centre, and Malinda Design Centre Kemang.

Guaranteeing perfect result both on the inside and the outside of the food, enhancing flavour and fragrance in every recipe. Thanks to an integrated system of advanced technology, Ariston oven brings multiflow technology, electronic temperature control, automatic recipes and assisted cycles. With multiflow technology, a cutting edge fan system with optimized rear panel for optimal distribution of heat flow inside the oven without recirculation areas, the even circulation of air in all directions and electronic control guarantee extraordinary cooking of the food all over, on shelves in the oven. Electronic temperature control minimizes swings in temperature during the cooking process, ensuring constant heat and result every time. The semi-automatic cycles suggest essential cooking parameters and guide the user in the choice of best temperature and shelf setting for the food. The temperatures and cooking times suggested by the oven can also easily be modified for a more customizable cooking experience. Ariston answers the burden of cleaning the oven after cooking, by offering a number of cleaning programmes, and even better, users will not need any chemical detergent whatsoever. Cleaning programmes include two

automatic pyrolytic cycles with temperature of 470 C that reduces the dirt to ash, which can then be easily removed using a damp cloth. The inside walls of the oven are covered by special panels treated with microporous enamel that through a catalytic oxidation process, captures the grease evaporated during the cooking process. Diamond clean, on the other hand, is the exclusive technology that uses the strength of steam to clean the oven. The entire oven has a special coating with cleaning properties, which is activated during the steam clean cycle that reaches a temperature of 90 and lasts just 35 minutes. All in tempered glass and resistant to high temperatures, it is a single, perfectly flat plate, without edges or narrow openings for grease or powder to accumulate in. This makes it easier to clean. While maintaining the same external dimensions and the same oven width opening of 60 cm, new Ariston ovens guarantee greater versatility for using the oven, thanks to exceptional capacity: up to 73 l and 71 l, approximately 20% more room, with the option of positioning the grills on 5 different cooking shelves. showering controls and components, range of accessories, and a new Kallista living finish, Blush Bronze. Two central components to Script are a new Kallista faucet design and elegant Blush Bronze finish, which is exclusive to the collection. The Script faucet is offered in two styles – a low spout, a perfectly scaled design that features a slightly curved neck, and an arch spout, which true to its name, is a graceful, sweeping gooseneck. The new Kallista Blush Bronze finish is a warm golden hue that resonates with burnished undertones, its satin finish imparting a soft glow and silky hand. In collaboration with Cristallerie Royale de Saint-Louis (Saint-Louis) of France, Kallista brings to Script a series of one-of-a-kind decorative crystal

knobs, each handcrafted by its gifted artisans. The two-dimensional colour is emphasised through the hand-cutting process, the exposed layers culminating in a faceted effect like that of a fine cut jewel. The Saint-Louis crystal designs are offered in the colours of sparkling Clear, dusky Flannel Grey and Dark Blue. In addition to the Saint-Louis cut crystal knobs are enamelled decorative lever and cross handles in the shades of White Frost Wave, smoky Flannel Grey Wave, iridescent Celeste Blue Wave, and multi-coloured Spring Rain. The mould design is hand-painted and fired four times to seal the colours and impart its glossy finish. The Frost Wave, Flannel Grey Wave, and Celeste Blue versions are decorated by a fluid series of lines that reflects light as it travels across the surface.

From the very moment guests arrive at The Royal Santrian they are welcomed with the words “Om Swastiastu”, which means peace and greetings in the name of god. Then a simple ritual blessing ceremony is performed that has been inspired by Bali’s Hindu religion. This gracious display of hospitality continues throughout the entire duration of stay to ensure an enriching Balinese experience. The hotel villa resort’s 2.5 hectares of lush tropical gardens slope gently down to a sparkling white sand beach of Nusa Dua. In these verdant and

BRUNSWICK A Refined Luxury

Since its invention in 1845 by John Moses Brunswick, the Brunswick Billiard table has always been dubbed the most legendary for its quality in both materials and designs. As a carpenter and woodworking enthusiast, Brunswick saw his first creation as more than a billiard table, but as the beginning of his calling on making further enhanced billiard tables. Within ten years afterwards, he had successfully built a reputation of making top quality, comfort driven billiard tables and essentials. Brunswick has ever since become the market leader for billiard room décor and equipment, thanks to the brand’s product quality and long experience in the industry. In every Brunswick table, one can find twelve incorporated leading characteristics. Structure specifications and details on each table, however, differ from one to another – resulting in a unique and customised table for every need. Dian Aprilia, founder of Surabaya Fashion Week back in 2008, commented that the event is now an annual celebration held in May – the month of which Surabaya’s anniversary fall in. This year the selected theme was Decimoda – Decimo originated from Spain, which means the tenth, and Moda means fashion. The parade is Dian’s way of achieving her vision – to make Surabaya a centre of fashion and a trendsetter for the local industries. Famous Indonesian designers presented their works throughout this fashion event, including Mel Ahyar, Hannie Hananto, Lenny Agustin, Elizabeth Njo May Fen, Embran Nawawi and Ferry Sunarto amongst at least 100 others. To broaden their concept, Surabaya Fashion Parade 2017 presented not only fashion runway, as they did in the previous years, but also pop-up store in Tunjungan Plaza 3 Atrium and Prefunction Convention Hall.

Different fashion show themes were unveiled each day of the event, including Look to East, Resort Wear, Moslem & Modest Wear, Urban & Avant Garde, and Red Carpet. To heat up the vibe, Surabaya Fashion Parade 2017 also held a number of fashion competitions for youngsters and young adults to enter. The contests include Model Search, Kids Model Search, Fashion Design, Kids Fashion Design, Fashion Styling and 3D Fashion Illustration.

Elizabeth Njo May Fen, the head of committee of Surabaya Fashion Parade 2017 described The Look to East theme as an enhanced realization of eastern outfits, while the Resort Wear theme was described as light, bright outfits ideal for holiday purposes. Elizabeth and her team carefully selected the exhibited pieces – only the best and the most fitted to the theme were shown on the stage. She also gave an opportunity for fashion schools to promote selected

students’ works during Fashion Runway, as she strongly believes that schools of mode is one of the major keys of fashion development in this country. The event was opened by a dance act of Tari Joged Surabaya, combined with Tari Selamat Datang, followed by rewarding ceremony for the committees. At least 1,500 guests travelled from afar to attend the parade. One of the highlighted collections was Kolang Kawung from Ketique Indonesia, featuring an array of batik clothing with kawung motif, a fruit member of palm family that have multiple functions down from

106

its deepest roots to the edges of its leaves. Kawung motif resembles similar meaning for its concept, to be useful for many aspects in the world. The icon also portray four different directions, symbolizes the balance of nature. Responding to a challenge from Tunjungan Plaza, Ketique creative director Elizabeth Njo May Fen created avant-garde, wearable and multi-functional collection. Designed with silhouette circle, H-line cutting, the clothing are enhanced by pattern made using Tenun kawung and batik tulis. One of the multi-functional features could be seen in a dress that could be turned to top with an outer, and an outer that could be set into a skirt.

Another multi-functional featured line was Inverso, the first label by a member of IFC Surabaya Laura Paulina Kelly. The name Inverso originated from the word invert, which pretty much explains the concept behind it. Cutting clean/tailored cut is the characteristic of this label, with businesswomen as its target market – so women could look both formal and edgy at the same time. Oversized outer, inverted manset, and misplaced collar are some of its distinctive features.

A collection by guest designer Hannie Hananto took the spotlight, showcasing a young and fashionable hijab looks in Surabaya Fashion Parade 2017. This collection called Hijabi Lady, Pretty Preppy is a representation of chic and girly young people nowadays in black and white monochrome, a strong characteristic of Hannie Hananto, and pink details. Ruffles, tutu dress, bow and pompom enhanced the girly side of Hijabi Lady.

An exotic, culturally rich look was presented by Allets the label by Stella Lisa. Allets is a ready-to-wear brand founded in 2014, which focuses on simple, effortless yet still highly fashionable design made of premium materials. Back in 2016, Allets developed a new line called Allets Batik, aimed to create fashions items with Indonesian traditional fabrics and concepts, such as batik, tenun, and songket. For Decimoda, Allets presented Sasaku collection inspired by the primitive looks of deep Eastern Indonesia. The features were then put into design and became the key-items of this collection, such as a primitive man’s figure made by a combination of embroidery and hand stiches. Dark tones such as

108

black and dark brown dominate the collection, adjusting to Fall/Winter theme. Conforming to Surabaya Fashion Parade’s theme “Look to East”, the collection features tenun and songket from Nusa Tenggara combined with dark coloured fabrics and the mentioned primitive embroideries. The figures got their 3D effect from the hand-stitched details. Even though the final look may seem tribal, however the silhouette from this collection still brings out effortless femininity. Plage collection by Yuliana Huang, on the other hand, was more into the brighter vibe. Inspired by the beach: waves, clouds and corals. Sky blue colour dominated the collection, in royal saten fabric and light

cutting, accompanied by coral brown with batik stiff fabric symbolizes strong corals. The progress combined modern technology of laser cutting, from making fabric to create a pattern that resembles wave movement. More of the overseas inspiration was adapted by Lenny Agustin, called Sugar Skull of Frida, inspired by Frida Kahlo and Day of the Death celebration in Mexico. Kahlo is a legendary artist from Mexico that made a lot of self-portraits. Her life was sad and lonely, since she had polio and suffered from a major accident on her 18th birthday that caused her to be sterile. Strong and mysterious image grew strong within her and her

artworks. She often wore long skirts to cover her polio, and flowers to cover her anxiety. Her self-expression in fashion and paintings influenced the world until this day. Sugar Skull collection by Lenny Agustin was filled with loose clothing and ruffle details. Pieces include crop blouse, dress, jacket, and ankle skirt. Aside from ruffles, Lenny also put ribbons and enormous flower adornments. The flower designs were taken from traditional batik pattern and traditional tenun stripes, in a combination of dark and bright colour tones, made of batik katun fabric from various cities in Java and tenun Lampung.

Peter Suwardi

Creating Banking Breakthrough Peter Suwardi comes across as a fun and likeable business leader. The vice president director of DBS Bank Indonesia is known for his open leadership style, a fresh breakthrough in the usually rigid banking industry. But Peter is no ordinary banker. His banking career started with a coincidence. While pursuing his master’s degree in the US, he encountered a friend who offered him a position in a bank and shortly afterwards he found himself entering the US banking industry. Soon after he obtained his master’s degree, his parents asked him to return to Indonesia. “Everyone in my family has returned to Indonesia. It was during the crisis, actually wrong timing, but I had no one else in the US. I never regret going home for good, though.” Even if that means he struggled to find a job in the banking industry. Peter once worked in a manufacturing industry, which required him to travel to the out-of-town factory everyday. “Thank God traffic wasn’t bad back then. But I asked to be moved to Jakarta office after 1.5 years. They got me a position as a credit controller. Then in early 2000, I returned to the banking industry as a relationship manager for Citibank corporate banking.” Prior to joining DBS Bank Indonesia in 2015, Peter, who holds degrees from California State University and Azusa Pacific University, was working at Citibank and HSBC. “I’m interested in DBS because it’s a regional banking institution. I’ve previously spent my career life in global banking institutions. I wanted to learn more about regional banking. Besides, DBS has a strong presence in Asia including China. I realise that the world is revolving and China might be the next super country.” Throughout his career, he recalls meeting one country manager who taught him about leadership. This business leader, who is much older than Peter, didn’t use the management by fear to lead his employees, but imposed easy-going leadership style instead. “In the event that we had issues, we talked and discussed the solution together instead of going around without a real conclusion. That’s type of leadership he has influenced me.” So, Peter brought this leadership value and has

110

incorporated it into his own leadership today. “I learnt a lot about delegation from him. Sometimes as part of the management, we’re afraid to let go and delegate things to the junior staff. I was a junior staff back then, but this guy happened to believe in me so much. Perhaps, it is because we have a trust level between us. I admired him so much because not many leaders can do that. I do the same with my employees in DBS Indonesia. Of course we still have to monitor but I also have to trust them all.” On the other hand, as an employee, one shouldn’t be afraid to raise an issue. “Don’t keep it to yourself. Raise it to your boss or to your boss’ boss, so we can find solution too.” Escalation, Peter admits, is hard because often employees don’t want to be perceived as stupid. One thing that many don’t notice is escalating an issue doesn’t mean giving up. “It’s okay to work on it and it’s good if we can solve it, but we still have to update the superiors so everyone is within the same language.” So, in order to establish the relationship, Peter pursues an open, easy-going leadership. He would be the boss who talk to you at a lunch or over a coffee, and make efforts to know you better. “I don’t want to be so serious because life is already serious, so make it as simple, easy and fun as possible. If as a leader we can’t show we’re fun then people will be awkward to us and we are to them.” In short, there are times to be serious and times to be fun, even at work. “I don’t want to be addressed as ‘Pak’,” he confesses, adding that in global banking industry no one called him that formal. So he’s still not used to being “Pak Peter” at the office. It’s not easy, he said, because at first everyone’s stranger to one another. “But it takes two to tango. So we have to approach them and let them approach us in their own way.” Indeed, we have seen it works through the interactions between him and the passing employees as the photo shoot took place. Fun is the attitude he brought home, too. Peter, who couldn’t stay away from the gym during the weekdays, even joined his wife for pilates at the weekend. “I go to the gym even when I’m travelling. When it comes to food, I eat everything. We only live once so enjoy the meal you have on the table.”

Tommy Singgih Leading with Vision Along with the rapid growth of technology, people demand more convenient way of how they conduct transactions. “And the world is in the making of cashless societies, everywhere including Indonesia,” says Tommy Singgih, director of Mastercard Indonesia. Over an afternoon chat in his office in South Jakarta’s elite area, Tommy says that what sets the increasing trend of digital payments is their convenience especially when compared to traditional payment method. “You just need to tap your card or scan QR code at a store. In cyberspace, transactions can now be done easily using a mobile phone. This is what our role is. As a technology company engaged in global payments, we are aware of the importance of creating safe and secure electronic payment infrastructure.” His assertion refers to Mastercard, which has established a presence in more than 210 countries and territories with transactions in over 150 currencies. “We want our consumers to experience more seamless daily transactions by digitizing payments through all channels; it’s what we call ‘digital by default.’ We also continue to take a value-driven approach in order to make transactions faster, easier, more convenient and of course secure,” Tommy explains. In Indonesia, as he further says, the company offers products to suit the needs of local consumers because “we understand that consumers in different countries have different needs.” In correspondence with this, Mastercard Indonesia has collaborated with a number of partners to provide Hajj and Umroh cards that facilitate transactions during the pilgrimage in the Holy Land. “The cards are indeed beneficial to those pilgrims. They can use the cards in any major ATM in Saudi Arabia. The nice thing is all the ATMs feature Bahasa Indonesia as one of the language options.” Mastercard Indonesia has also partnered with various strategic parties to provide consumers with the convenience of cashless transactions. With the company’s innovative programs, it is hoped that consumers will have an easier, safer and faster cashless payment experience to support the National Non-Cash Movement (GNNT). Launched by Bank Indonesia, GNNT aims at accelerating the realization of a cashless society. As a financial expert, Tommy recognises the potential of economic growth in South East Asia’s developing countries is very huge. This is particularly in Indonesia, which is expected to be a trillion dollar economy over the next few years and the world’s fourth largest economy within the next decade. “I believe that the huge potential for growth will positively impact consumers from the rising middle-class segment. Many of them have developed the habit of travelling, and such a

112

favourable condition will lead them to conduct more cashless transactions. Most Indonesians use credit cards for lifestyle products and services, while debit cards are used for daily transactions. However, with the growth of e-commerce and mobile payment system, the use of electronic payment cards for e-commerce will increase in frequency, as people can now buy anything online, from daily staples to luxury goods,” he asserts. Tommy has spent more than 14 years with Mastercard Indonesia. Prior to his appointment as the company’s director since beginning of 2016, he started his six-year career with the card business at Citi Indonesia and worked at one of the largest telecommunications companies, PT Satelindo, with roles in a variety of business divisions, such as international dialling and satellites. He served as an account manager when first joined Mastercard, then made his way to hold the position of business development head before climbing up to reach his current position. For him, the ability to lead with vision is one of his successful leadership recipes. This requires the skill of motivating employees. “I believe that giving encouragement and recognition to employees will in turn lead them to achieve positive results in terms of working performance,” he further asserts. In his own view, there are three qualities that a business leader should possess. They are: being a role model who always inspires his or her staff, having the ability to recognise business opportunities, and being able to maintain interest in the workplace by encouraging people participation. “I incorporate the three qualities into my management style, which emphasises management involvement/attentiveness, open communication/people participation, and persistence,” says Tommy who admires the leadership style of his father. “I learned discipline and persistence from my father who has a military background.” Despite his work devotion; the husband of Mrs. Andriany and the father of two daughters, Nabila and Nadhifa; always finds time to spend with his family, doing fun activities that range from watching a movie to dining out as well as travelling to either local or international destination. “I’m also into photography, and travelling to me means capturing the beauty of nature and tasting local food.” Speaking of food, Tommy loves spicy Indonesian fare. “I love street food, too, especially when it comes to mie ayam and ketoprak. The street food is very authentic with distinct flavour.” While concluding the interview, Tommy reminds us of the importance of balancing our minds with spiritual belief. “I’d say this is very crucial as it can bring value to your life.”

Elizabeth Njo May Fen

Tailoring Transformation In the world of fashion, it takes creativity and innovation to come up with designs that can win the market, says the Surabaya-based fashion designer Elizabeth Njo May Fen. Affectionately known by her nickname Afen, the owner of Ketique fashion label exhibited her new collection at the Batik of the Archipelago Event or Gelar Batik Nusantara (GBN), held at the Jakarta Convention Centre on 7-11 June. “It’s handmade batik tailored in transformation style. This time, as the Idul Fitri festivity is approaching, I’ve crafted some long dress pieces, so they can also fit for Muslim women,” Afen said at the event, which took place last Ramadhan. In creating those pieces, she incorporates seamless handmade batik into beautiful design. That’s the kind of quality that makes Ketique unique in the market. Curated by the Indonesian Fashion Chamber, the GBN event housed exhibitors that produce only handmade batik. “Rarely do fashion designers from Surabaya play in this area. Probably the reason is the conservative style of the handmade batik that is not attractive to today’s fashionable young people especially the millennial generation. That’s why you need creativity and innovation to make stylish handmade batik,” Afen remarks. Fashionably elegant and sophisticated are also the words that describe her edgy collections. While some fashion lovers see Ketique as innovatively amazing-looking pieces. Regardless of the different public opinions, Afen has become of the magnets in Surabaya’s fashion scene, featuring unique and edgy transformation style. This convertible dress is truly functional and convenient. One of the collections features the dress that can be worn as a skirt or a strapless dress. The talented Afen has a story to tell of her success in creating her own label. How her dream has become fruition is a perfect example of a quality that inspires young generation of fashion designers. Her dream of becoming a fashion designer was what led her to embark on the industry. “I was in 6th grade when I started to have that dream, and I ever since always wanted to be a fashion designer. Of course there was a setback along the way. Just like a roller coaster, there’s up and down, but more importantly I enjoyed the ride.” Perseverance and hard work are the secret recipes of her success, yet fashion seems to have been implanted in her DNA. Autodidactic in art of fashion and sewing design, Afen eventually realised her dream at the age of 20. It was in 1997 when she first set her career journey as a professional

114

fashion designer, and a decade later she opened her fashion design school. Despite employing teachers at the school, she herself still teaches, yet only advanced classes. In addition, she is often hosts various fashion workshops as a speaker. While continuing to strengthen her presence in the industry, including running her own garment business, Afen at the beginning of 2009 founded Pison Art & Fashion Foundation (PAFF). “The objective of this foundation is to nurture young talents and provide them with opportunities that fashion industry has to offer.” With a humble smile, she recalls the year 2008, a period that marked an excellent milestone in her profession. That was the year when she was bestowed with the Indonesian Record Museum (MURI) award for the creation of her seamless gown. Other achievement that has inked her shining portfolio is taking part at prestigious fashion events in major cities in Indonesia as well as abroad. Afen is married to Mukri Timin, and the couple is blessed with a son, Yoel Andreas, and a daughter, Joanne Andreas. Creativity seems to be implanted in her family. Her husband is an entrepreneur in the field of creative design. He’s more into designing packaging, something like paper bags and denim labels. Meanwhile, her daughter Joanne seems to follow in her mother’s footsteps. “She has since the age of nine designed a number of clothes, and has exhibited her collection at a fashion show in Surabaya,” Afen says proudly. Meanwhile, her son Yoel is into IT and now is enrolled at Petra Christian University. Amidst her busy daily routine, life for her is not all about work. Weekend is the time that she calls “the must-have time to spend with the family”. One activity that she loves the most is to dine out with her family. “We love seafood, and there are many restaurants in Surabaya that serve great seafood.” The mother of two travels a lot, but usually for work. Yet, she always finds time to travel with her family when the children are on holiday. “We love going to beach and off-thebeaten destinations. So far, Bali, Yogyakarta and Lombok are on our top list.” Concluding the interview, Afen says that she admires many new fashion labels. Asked what is her favourite, she responds with another humble smile, “There are many and lot of them are beautiful. But if you ask what my most favourite one is, well my best answer would be…Ketique!”

LABUAN BAJO

LABUAN BAJO LAND An Opportunity to Invest

Labuan Bajo Land is currently a growing tourism site in Indonesia, with all the beauty this destination has to offer. Located at Batu Gosok Beach in Labuan Bajo, Flores, with high tourism demand and easy access, the land spans fifteen hectares, with coastline of 450m up cliff and 250m direct access to the beach. It has earned legal permit by the local governor as a commercial tourism area. Position-wise, the area is ideal for a hotel or resort development, owing to beach access, road access and terraced hills for views of sunset and sunrise. The land is located about five kilometres away from Komodo Labuan Bajo International Airport, which was officially opened in December 2015. As the location is growing, the airport is set to be one of the busiest in the country, with more new facilities under development to cater and meet the needs

for larger domestic and international flights. It is also the gateway airport for travellers visiting the renowned Komodo Park. Another access is through Labuan Bajo Jetty, the busiest transportation port connecting travellers to its surrounding islands. It takes ten to fifteen minutes to Tanjung Batu Gosok by boat, and approximately thirty minutes to Komodo Park. Even more, the location is easily accessible to and from Tanjung Batu Gosok (Batu Gosok Peninsula), in the North West of East Nusa Tenggara at Labuan Bajo City. The hill allows travellers to enjoy white sand beach with green and blue coloured seawater. The left side faces Komodo Park and Komodo Sunset View, the front and right side faces the colourful seawater, while the back road leads to Labuan Bajo City and Airport. These Hectare’s land for sale with the price of IDR 580/m.

Since its inception six years ago, Tiancheng International has brought to the market a number of important Kashmir sapphires, including the 10.88-Carat Kashmir “Cornflower Blue” Sapphire sold in 2014. Sapphires of over 10 carats are extremely rare and this season we are thrilled to present a Kashmir gem of a highly impressive size of 18.83 carats. Jadeite bead necklaces have been one of the most sought after items at auction. Lot 63 jadeite bead and diamond necklace comprises 41 jadeite beads, all of spectacular luscious green colour and brilliant transparency that allows the holes of each bead to be clearly visible.
