CLASS OF 2020 COMMENCEMENT FRIDAY, JULY 31, 2020 SATURDAY, AUGUST 1, 2020 SUNDAY, AUGUST 2, 2020

Fall 1887 Main Hall, under construction.

1888

1890

First issue of the student newspaper, Highlander, published. Was later renamed The Brown and Gold before its original name was eventually restored.

Statue of the Sacred Heart (in front of Main Hall) donated by parents of John Brisben Walker, who had donated the land for the current campus along with L.K. Perrin. Walker’s Pub is named for him.

FROM HUMBLE BEGINNINGS It was in the summer of 1867 that five Jesuits — most from Italy — along with three Sisters of Loretto and several others journeyed west across the high plains to Las Vegas, New Mexico, to minister to the Spanish-speaking population there. A few years before them, Rev. Joseph Machebeuf had taken a similarly arduous trip. He was dispatched north to Denver, where he set out to establish schools to teach the young in his rapidly expanding Catholic flock.

First he attracted Las Vegas’ Sisters of Loretto to create a girls academy. Then he convinced Las Vegas’ Jesuits, who had established their own college in 1877, to move north to Colorado. And they did, first to the base of Red Rocks at Morrison, then to a high ridge in Northwest Denver, settling on acreage donated by John Brisben Walker and Berkeley Farms. Eventually renamed to honor a Jesuit saint who toiled in the mountains, that college today is Regis University.

1912

1921

Floyd Schafer, former football player at Notre Dame, becomes first football coach. The school paper, The Brown and Gold, ran a contest for a team name. The athletics board, a few faculty and the editor chose the “Rangers.”

Sacred Heart College changed name to Regis College after concerns raised about the profane use of the Sacred Heart name in yells from fans during sports events. Students also referred to the college as “The Shack” because of its SHC initials.

1920s A planned Ku Klux Klan march to burn a cross on campus was rebuffed after the Jesuits called on students to protect their school and posted students armed with baseball bats every five feet.

1921 Regis High School and Regis College become separate entities.

1946 Football program ends and basketball becomes the college’s intercollegiate sport. 1945 A downtown school for night classes is established.

OUR JESUIT MISSION Inspired by St. Ignatius of Loyola, the mission of Regis University is to educate men and women of all ages to be agents of change in a rapidly changing global society. We encourage our students to seek truth, live purposeful lives and continually examine and attempt to answer the question, “How ought we to live?” Our Ignatian tradition challenges us to attain the inner freedom to make choices guided by competence, conscience and compassion. We seek to provide value-centered undergraduate and graduate education, and prepare individuals who strive for achievement beyond themselves and are committed to serving others and building a more just world. Regis University — as one of 27 Jesuit universities in the nation and more than 170 worldwide — tailors learning to meet the needs of its 8,000 students. Each of its three colleges offers a distinct expression of the University’s mission. From the traditional student living on campus, to a business executive studying online, to a health care student serving in a clinical placement in rural Colorado, Regis’ student body spans many experiences and countries. Our graduates join an international community that is proudly #JesuitEducated. Congratulations and welcome to your new world.

WELCOME From the President Dear Regis University graduates, Never in our world’s history has cura personalis – or care for the individual – been more relevant or important. One of the hallmarks of a Jesuit education is centering your intellectual, affective and spiritual growth. This foundational growth is at the core of your curriculum. The focus is as much on your development as any subject or materials to be covered. Your growth is aligned to your pace and rhythm, your individual ability and your own personality. As much as any lab, novel, algorithm or code, your personal development is what trains and defines your character. And your character is what helps you overcome selfishness or apathy and discover an abiding respect and responsibility to make the world a better place. This allows you to better recognize the human dignity of each and all individuals. Concern for total human development is a responsible use of personal and civic freedom. This too allows us to discover prejudice and limitations in our worldview and how this might impact the life of another person.

During commencement ceremonies, the president wears the chain of office and carries the ceremonial mace: Maces were medieval war clubs. At universities, the mace became a traditional symbol of protection and later evolved as a longer walking stick. The academic mace today is associated with the dignity and preservation of the University as a place where all subjects may be explored. The presidential chain of office is worn as part of the president’s academic attire at ceremonial occasions such as commencements and convocations. The medallion bears the University’s seal and five engraved bars representing different names by which the University was known through its history until becoming Regis University in 1991.

Regis University’s mission is to educate you, as men and women of all ages and faiths, to take leadership roles and to make a positive impact in a changing society. We do this through our Jesuit foundation, giving you an excellent, valuecentered and experiential education that honors the whole person — your mind, body and spirit. Who better than you now, with all of your gifts and promise, and the foundation of a Jesuit education at Regis University, to lead and inspire the healing and the change the world and are society are aching to realize. Use your abilities to discern, to question, to discover — and the mission of Regis University — to seek and be a source of light in the darkness. For more than 400 years, all graduates of all Jesuit colleges and universities across the world have heard the charge of St. Ignatius of Loyola to “Go forth and set the world on fire.” Be beacons and shine on. Gratefully,

John P. Fitzgibbons, S.J. President

ACADEMIC ATTIRE Present-day academic attire is derived from the long clerical robe, a vestimentum clausum, and hooded outer garment, a pluvial, worn by university faculty and students during the Middle Ages. By 1893, a uniform code for the design and colors of academic attire was determined, comprised of three pieces: a robe, a hood and a hat called a mortarboard. Gowns are typically black — bachelor’s gowns with pointed sleeves, master’s gowns with long, oblong tapered sleeves and doctoral gowns with round, bellshaped sleeves. Additionally, doctoral gowns have adopted a few other colors and have three velvet bars, representing the degrees earned. The academic hood derives from the cowl of the monk’s habit. Today, hoods are standardized and are reserved for those with a degree beyond the baccalaureate level. The color of the hood’s lining indicates the institution granting the degree, and the color of the cap’s tassel and hood’s velvet edging indicates the division. Gold tassels and black tassels, when worn by faculty, indicate degree rather than division or discipline. Arts, Letters, Humanities Applied Science, Science Business Counseling Development Practice

HONOR SOCIETY MEMBERSHIPS ALPHA SIGMA NU Alpha Sigma Nu is the national honor society of the Jesuit colleges and universities in the United States. The society was founded in 1915 at Marquette University to honor a select number of students each year on the basis of scholarship, loyalty and service. Alpha Sigma Nu merged with Gamma Pi Epsilon in 1973 and now has active chapters on all 27 Jesuit collegiate campuses and two theological schools in the United States and at Sogang University in Seoul, Korea, initiating some 1,300 new members each year. Alpha Sigma Nu is unique among honor societies in that it seeks to identify the most promising students of the Jesuit schools, students who demonstrate an intelligent appreciation of and commitment to the ideals of Jesuit higher education: intellectual, social, moral and religious. The following is a list of May 2020 graduates who are members of Alpha Sigma Nu, one of the highest honors that can be given on a Jesuit campus.

1960 Riding high on the success of the basketball team – who won the first inaugural National Catholic Intercollegiate Tournament in 1948 — a new field house was dedicated.

1953 Alumnus Charles Brannan completed term as U.S. Secretary of Agriculture.

1949 Regis president decides to sell pigs that lived on campus. Various crops and livestock were grown on campus over the years to supplement the dining room.

1958 First “Regis Week” held, featuring an academic symposium and a banquet at which “First Citizen” awards were given to outstanding individuals of Colorado for their service and integrity. Students later declared a day of fun and games — “Ranger Day” — would follow the events.

1968 Women were admitted to Regis for the first time, resulting in a temporary decline in enrollment and donations. Penny Dempsey was elected the first female student body president in 1972.

1966 A chapter of Alpha Sigma Nu, a national Jesuit honorary fraternity promoting scholarship, service and loyalty, was established.

1964 The largest bequest to date — $850,000 — was received from the estate of Elizabeth Dayton, who had virtually no known contact with the college. A new library was later named for her and her husband.

1990 Regis Jesuit High School moved to Parker and Arapahoe Roads in southeast Denver and the College purchased and occupied the high school buildings (now known as Claver Hall) and grounds.

1974 British rock band Queen played their first concert in the United States in the Regis Field House.

1988 Loretto Heights College, founded by the Sisters of Loretto in 1891, joined Regis College. Its nursing program became the foundation for the Rueckert-Hartman College for Health Professions; its University Without Walls became the College for Professional Studies.

1993 Regis hosted a meeting between Pope John Paul II and President Bill Clinton.

1997 Nobel Prize recipient His Holiness the 14th Dalai Lama of Tibet visited Regis.

2002 On the University’s 125th anniversary, Regis President Rev. Michael Sheeran, S.J., led a contingent to the Jesuit house in Naples, Italy, from whence the original “Regis Jesuits” came.

2010 Senior William Gohl was named a Rhodes Scholar, the second Regis student to earn that distinction. The first was Mary Ann Lehmkuhle O’Hara.

2018 The 1,300-tree arboretum on the Lowell campus received accreditation.

2020 Regis becomes the preferred academic partner for HealthONE, the region’s largest healthcare provider, which increases Regis student access to employment in the HealthONE network.

Lord, teach me to be generous; Teach me to serve you as you deserve; To give and not to count the cost; To fight and not to heed the wounds; To toil and not to seek for rest; To labor and not to ask for reward; Save that of knowing that I am doing your will.

“A Prayer for Generosity St. Ignatius of Loyola The First Jesuit
