Department of Physical Therapy Message From the Chair and Associate Chair We are delighted to present our 2010-11 annual report. This year was a particularly busy one. We received approximately 500 qualified applicants and accepted 94 new students into the MScPT program, more than ever before. In June, we proudly graduated 76 new Physical Therapists. Within the Department, there were a number of noteworthy accomplishments. This year, we witnessed the completion of our new lab and classroom facilities on the Augustana Campus in Camrose and the launch of the Augustana Satellite program. Then in September of 2010, the initial Augustana cohort of 10 students commenced their MScPT studies at Augustana. This year, students and faculty in Edmonton and Augustana also embraced the Distributed Learning model. The associated video conferencing technology has worked flawlessly ensuring that students at both sites receive the highest quality of education possible. Indeed, the success of the Augustana Satellite and Distributed Learning model has led the Government of Alberta to not only provide funding to extend the Augustana Satellite program for an additional three years but also to fund a similar Satellite program in Calgary. So, as a Department we spent much of 2010-11 planning for the launch of a second satellite program which will be housed in the U of C downtown Centre building and commence operations in 2012. With the launch of the Augustana satellite and work commencing on the Calgary Satellite, we needed to upgrade our Corbett Hall facilities on the U of A North Campus. So this year, we redeveloped CH 1-10 which serves as the main clinical teaching space for our students. The lab underwent structural and technological upgrades to provide students with the best learning environment possible. The new lab is now fully equipped to link with the satellite program and there is new equipment throughout the lab. With the expansions, we also had to hire additional support staff and upgrade the Department’s administrative offices. The Department of Physical Therapy was pleased to welcome Dr. Linda Woodhouse into the Dr. David Magee Endowed Research Chair in Musculoskeletal Research. The Magee Chair position is the first endowed Chair position in the Faculty of Rehabilitation Medicine and we wish to acknowledge the strong support from the Faculty in securing the funds necessary for the creation of such a position. In 2011, the World Congress of Physical Therapy met in Amsterdam and we were pleased to see over half of our faculty members attend and present. The Department also hosted a dinner for 34 conference delegates.

Department of Physical Therapy Message From the Chair and Associate Chair cont’d Our faculty members continue to be at the forefront of research; this year they published 76 peer reviewed articles, one book, five book chapters and 96 abstracts/ conference presentations. As principle or co-investigators our faculty members acquired approximately $3.8 million dollars in new grants. The overall current funding for all of our research programs is now approaching $10 million. We are also very proud of our research graduate students who acquired over $300,000 in awards and scholarships this past year. Our Corbett Hall Student PT Clinic continues to grow and now includes an older adult health and wellness program and a mixed case load clinic. In 2010/11, we were able to offer these clinics more often and throughout most of the year. As the referral numbers grow, the clinic is aiming for year round fulltime service. As with previous years, we moved a number of our course activities and assignments to an online (distance) format making learning more flexible. We provided a series of five webinars for practitioners in conjunction with Physiotherapy Alberta. Webinars were viewed by therapists from across the country. We also post a recording of each webinar on our website so those unable to attend the event live can view the presentation at their leisure. This year, also saw the launch of PTHER 410, a distance format course on Diagnostic Imaging in Physical Therapy Practice. This course was developed in co-operation with the Alberta Physiotherapy College and Association and is designed for those practicing therapists who will be ordering diagnostic imaging. Our intent is to expand this offering to therapists from across the country. We hope that this annual report will give you a sense of the ongoing activities within the Department of Physical Therapy. Clinical Education The Academic Coordinator of Clinical Education (ACCE) has organized a total of 504 clinical placements during the year, this includes 481
University of Alberta student placements, 18 placements for students from other Canadian physiotherapy programs and 5 placements for international students. One U of A student completed a placement in Kenya.
The ACCE continues to work with partners in the public and private healthcare sectors to ensure enough appropriate placements are secured for students. The department is working with partner organizations to establish student-led clinics that will increase clinical placement capacity and enhance productivity of the clinical sites. With the Augustana satellite program running, better use has been made of placement facilities closer to Camrose for both shadow day experiences and full clinical placements. The ACCE continues to meet regularly with clinical site coordinators to disseminate information about the program, to discuss clinical education and to solicit feedback from sites. In addition, a number of visits to sites have been undertaken while students are on clinical placement to meet clinical supervisors and get oriented to facilities. A program update and feedback webinar was held in October 2010 to further connect with clinicians across the province. The webinar aimed to provide information about changes in the academic and clinical program and to seek feedback from clinicians about student and new graduate clinical performance. This has been well received and will be repeated in 2011. Physical Therapy students continue to volunteer in the SHINE clinic, an interprofessional student-run clinic for at risk youth in downtown Edmonton. Feedback from students has been positive; students are supervised by PTs from the community who volunteer their time one Saturday afternoon every three or four months. Two half day interprofessional clinical supervision workshops were held in both Calgary and Medicine Hat. The workshops focussed on educating potential supervisors about the basics of student supervision as well as dealing with challenging students. Workshops were well attended in both cities with a good mix of therapists from all three rehabilitation disciplines.

Augustana Satellite In the fall of 2010, the Department of Physical Therapy introduced a new satellite Masters of Science in Physical Therapy (MScPT) program at the University of Alberta’s Augustana Campus in Camrose, Alberta. Over 40 students selected the Augustana Campus as their first choice and from that 10 students were admitted. Feedback to date from students, faculty, staff and the Augustana community has been positive. Students performed at par with their classmates in Edmonton, new student electives were developed within the Camrose community and partnerships with local rehabilitation practitioners were created. Throughout the first year students attended over 300 lectures, seminars and lab sessions via video conferencing. There were less than 10 minor technology issues in those classes and the students were able to embrace learning from a distance. Teaching using the video conferencing technology also occurred from Camrose to Edmonton as each instructor travelled to Camrose to teach at least once and two courses were almost entirely taught from Camrose. Blended seminar groups were also trialled where students from both campuses were connected for seminars. This occurred at least once per week during the second term with great success.

Augustana Satellite Both written and practical exams were completed via distance. This worked very well as students were able to communicate with their instrutors in real time during written and practical exams via video conferencing without issues. Most practical exams in the future will be able to be completed this way. A University of Alberta Teaching and Learning Enhancement Fund (TLEF) grant for evaluation of the Augustana pilot was received for 2011 to 2014. The multifaceted evaluation will consider the impact of the satellite program on the students’ performance and engagement, instructor experience, technology and the local Camrose community. To date two related abstracts have been presented – 1 poster presentation at the University of Alberta’s Festival of Teaching in January 2011 and 1 platform poster presentation at the World Congress of Physical Therapy in Amsterdam in June 2011. The Department of Physical Therapy received provincial government funding for three additional Augustana cohorts and hence will admit 10 students in 2011, 2012 and 2013. The funding also allows for increased local staff members at Augustana - 2 Faculty members and 1 PT Assistant.

Corbett Hall Student Physical Therapy Clinic The Corbett Hall Student Physical Therapy Clinic is operated within the Department of Physical Therapy. Students in the MScPT program provide treatment and rehabilitation under the supervision of a licensed physical therapist. Mixed Caseload Clinic This non-profit clinic offers care to people with neurological or musculoskeletal/ orthopedic injuries or conditions. As student learning is emphasized, assessment and treatment sessions typically take longer than what patients would experience in a community physical therapy clinic/ambulatory setting. Physician referrals are not required. The clinic is provided to students as a one credit elective course and runs one evening per week. Feedback from students has been very positive. Students feel that the clinic offers: (1) a safe a supported clinical learning environment (2) ‘real world’ acclimatization and (3) increased confidence in working with patients.
The Older Adult Health and Wellness Student Clinic The clinic is specifically designed to improve older adults’ general health and wellness, from improving balance and preventing falls to minimizing pain due to arthritis or developing a strength and conditioning program. The clinic is open to all abilities and conditions and strives to improve all attendees’ health with special emphasis on conditions that affect those aged 55 years and older.
