Health Sciences Visiting International Program A CUSTOMIZED PROGRAM DESIGNED TO EQUIP CURRENT AND FUTURE HEALTH PROFESSIONALS

Health-care spending is expected to rise worldwide, and the growing demand for health care is expected to remain strong. Training for health professionals is of utmost importance to ease the burden on health systems and to ensure growing health-care demands are met. The University of Alberta understands the urgent need to provide world-class health training aimed at promoting and protecting the health of people.

The Health Sciences Visiting International Program is a superior program that can be customized to meet your needs.


WHO SHOULD ATTEND This bridging program is intended to further health science graduate and clinical training in Canada, as well as professional development for health-care practitioners. This program is suited to university students who wish to enrich their understanding of the health sciences. It is also suited to practitioners and clinicians who want to enhance their skills and knowledge to better serve patients and clients in their home country.

PROGRAM OBJECTIVES Participants in this program will: •

improve their English-language capabilities with specific attention given to health-care scenarios.

measure health and disease in populations.

identify causes and estimate health risks in populations.

design effective research studies.

learn prevention, screening, evaluation and assessment techniques.

understand geographic information science techniques.

learn health data analysis for public health surveillance.

learn about the delivery of rehabilitation services within a Canadian context.

learn about how various health disciplines interact to provide client care.

attend lectures and participate in hands-on clinical assessments in a variety of areas including, but not limited to:

Chronic pain management

Spinal cord injury

Stroke rehabilitation

Head injury

Swallowing disorders

Assistive technologies

Knee/shoulder/hip assessment

Knee/shoulder/hip arthroplasty

visit several sites to observe physicians and rehabilitation staff in a variety of clinical settings to understand how the various disciplines interact in the provision of client care.


PROGRAM OVERVIEW Our Health Sciences Visiting International Program can be customized for your visiting group. Please contact us for any specific requests, and we can cater a program to meet your needs. Here are some example modules we can provide:

ENGLISH LANGUAGE FOR SPECIAL PURPOSES

IMPROVING HEALTH OF POPULATIONS

Features a strong focus on in-depth receptive and productive mastery of academic and medical vocabulary in both oral and written production.

Covers health promotion planning, screening in public health, economic evaluation and technology assessment.

Course texts will focus on medical terminology, highlevel reading comprehension and analytical skills, as well as critical thinking.

Workshops on using social media and searching medical literature.

MEASURING HEALTH AND DISEASE IN POPULATIONS •

Includes pre-course evaluation of skills, measures of disease burden, characteristics of populations, sources and quality of health data, disease diagnoses and classification. Workshops on data presentation, data management, class exercise in epidemic investigations, Epi-Info introduction and Geographic Information System (GIS) introduction and application.

WORKSHOPS AND CLINICAL OBSERVATION •

Provides a blend of lectures, hands-on activity and clinical observation experience.

On site visits at several private and public health sites to receive intensive clinical exposure with facility medical and rehabilitation staff. Example observation sites include: •

Glen Sather Sports Medicine Clinic specializing in the assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and rehabilitation of orthopedic and sports related injury.

Glenrose Rehabilitation Hospital, the largest freestanding comprehensive tertiary rehabilitation centre in North America (observation in amputee, stroke, head injury units, overview of advanced rehabilitation technologies).

Health Science Research Commons to participate in a series of simulation scenarios in a variety of environments (critical care room, smart condo, specialized bariatric care suite).

Private clinics offering chronic pain management programs and medication management.

IDENTIFYING CAUSES AND ESTIMATING RISKS •

Includes concepts of causation, determinants of population health and design of research studies.

Workshops on using basic statistical tests and practice exercises using analysis software.

Critical appraisal of medical literature and the hierarchy of research evidence.
