Know your iPad! Before looking for the ultimate guide to using iPads in the classroom, it is recommended that you invest some time exploring the device and using it as a learning tool yourself.
You don’t have to start with educational Apps right from day
one. Select a topic that you are interested in and look for Apps related to it. You will be surprised at the number of transferable skills that apply to many Apps. So, what you will learn while using an App to look for your summer holiday destination such as TripAdvisor, will be useful when you start using other Apps for educational purposes. You will also need to spend some time getting to know how the device works and how the basic iPad Apps function. A good list to start with would be learning how... • iTunes store works: search for Apps, download them, log in/out, update software ...etc. • to use Safari. • to download and organize books using iBook. • to setup your IAT and personal email accounts on Mail. • to backup your iPad. • to transfer Apps that you purchase using the iPad into your iTunes on the laptop. • to organize/delete Apps. • to use the iPad calendar and synchronize it with Google and/or other calendars. • to change the settings of the device and maintain it. In addition to the wonderful iPad support page on Apple website http:// www.apple.com/support/ipad/ and http://www.apple.com/ipad/, there are thousands of useful tutorials on YouTube and on Online Communities of Educators such as iPads in Education Ning.
iPadagogy & The TPACK Framework According to the ISTE (International Society for Technology in Education) http:// w w w. i s t e . o r g / w e l c o m e . a s p x , “ I t i s paramount that teachers possess the skills and behaviors of digital age professionals. Moving forward, teachers must become comfortable being co-learners with their students and colleagues around the world. Therefore, it is our responsibility as educators to become lifelong learners ourselves if we are to succeed in preparing our students to become 21 st century learners, who are capable of adapting new tools to the best of their learning. It is now evident that teachers of the 21st century should know the why, what and how of technology integration in the classroom. With iPads in the classroom, using a model or framework for technology integration is vital to guarantee successful implementation and use. The TPACK
( Te c h n o l o g i c a l Pe d a g o g i c a l C o n t e n t Knowledge) model provides in-depth explanation of how technology should be i n t e g ra t e d i n t o t h e c l a s s r o o m . T h e framework considers three important knowledge bases for teachers to integrate technology successfully towards meaningful learning and focuses on new kinds of knowledge that take place in the intersection between them.
