Prospect Park Pavilion Design I participated in the Institute of Classical Architecture and Art’s four-week Summer Studio from June 2021 to July 2021. In completing this program I gained knowledge in Classical Architecture elements and principles, along with proportional, observational, and analytical drawing skills. As a program participant, I was tasked to design a classical entry pavilion located at the Prospect Park in Brooklyn, New York. This was my first experience designing a classical building. This design contains the classical elements of Doric pilasters, a balustrade, and a Roman arcade. I was inspired by the precedent Prospect Park Boathouse, which was designed in the early twentieth century by Frank Helmle & Ulrich Huberty. I designed the pavilion to have a purpose of serving as a connection between the built and natural environment. The arcade is a roofed space that feels the natural ventilation of the wind and is open to the sensations of the natural environment. The circular interior spaces offer a connection to the natural environment through the presence of large surrounding glazing.

Pantheon Precedent Study In February of 2022, I was tasked to choose and draw a precedent that heavily relied on a natural light source. I chose to study the Pantheon, and began researching its measurements, design program, and design concept. This precedent study required me to deeply analyze and contemplate the Pantheon, thus preparing me to complete a detailed drawing of the structure.

Figuration and Deep Decoration During the Fall semester of 2021, I was tasked to design a diligently ornamented ten story research building with my fellow classmate, Nodoka Shimizu. This was my first experience designing a commercial building. The process began with the examination of the project site San Francisco- learning the site’s demographic and climate conditions. We designed an ornamental pattern based on the concept of Celtic Knots. The structure is not only decorated with our invented knot patterns but is also made structurally sound due to an interweaving of the knot screens, acting as transverse beams. I created diagrams to explain the sun path of the site, the building’s program structure, and the building’s circulation.

Urban Interaction In this project completed during the Spring semester of 2021, I was tasked to design a residential structure of American Vernacular that would be placed within the Cabbagetown area of Atlanta, Georgia. I completed a site examination of Cabbagetown, analyzing socioeconomic and historical demographics. Examining the site aided me into designing this residential cottage duplex structure for two hypothetical creative artists. Cabbagetown is a forested and lively neighborhood where those living within it often converse with each other and take walks around the neighborhood. The cottage balconies would give the inhabitant not only access to communion with their neighbors but also access to communion with the surrounding nature.
