THE AMANDAT TAMATZUI ART GALLERY

CompE Lockwood

AmandaT Tamatzui was no stranger to Second Life, returning last March after a few years’ absence. The New Zealand artist has an impressive Real World resume: Exhibits in four continents and sales in Europe, the USA, New Zealand, and Asia. Today, she is back, and so are her paintings in the AmandaT Tamatzui Gallery. You should be here, too.

“I bought this building when I found a place in Second Life,” AmandaT explains, giving an impromptu tour among walls adorned with her work as colorful as she is.

In the early days, her exhibitions were held in smaller venues, such as the small gallery provided by her home landlord. She notes, “My first SL art exhibition was in 2009, but this is the place I can truly call my own.” For many SL art patrons, her gallery is their home as well.

On first encounters, patrons become friends. They are drawn to over 50 paintings adorning artistic walls. View the beauty, enjoy the color, and study the work. Part of AmandaT’s story is in each piece.

On these cyber canvases, art celebrates life through abstracts, which the creator claims to be the best form to express thoughts and ideas. She notes that abstract is not necessarily with people or figures. It is a play on colors and feelings to express something.

“My works are colorful,” adds the artist who has sold over 120 pieces in real life and an estimated 80 in the second one. “There is an air of abstract, fantasy, and whimsy. I have been a dreamer since I was a kid,” she explains. In art, her dreams are illustrated in pigments.

“This is my style. These are my stories.”

My London Trip on Canvas is one such painting and tale. It is AmandaT’s 2012 visit to England as told through paint and pigments. “It was interesting, but I’m glad to be back in New Zealand,” she laughs, reminiscing London adventures.

Her other works are similarly created. Pieces of the painting illustrate the whole. A favorite, Dance Sistas depicts five women of various ages and races dancing together to their hearts’ content. You don’t have to be a sister to feel good when viewing this work. Anyone who has good friends makes the connection, and smiles.

Another example is Red Timer, depicting an hourglass with written messages, “Time does not wait for us,” and “You are special!” The takeaway is, “Don’t wait to tell somebody that.” Duly noted.

Every painting in here evokes similar reactions- smiles, happiness, inspiration. Her canvases make you think, make you happy, or make you want to know more. Some topics are obvious. Others, open for interpretation.

Like real world galleries, directional signs point the way to various chambers. Depending on the path you take, abstract art, abstractive figurative works, and more are displayed. Of course, this is Second Life, so unlike real world galleries, there is a dance intan in the lobby and on this visit, a cyber kitten is in the hall.
