Letter From the Editor: Dear Readers, For 18 years I have lived in the beautiful town of Rockport, Massachusetts and have been inspired by my surroundings every day. This beach town is filled with a variety of cultures, colors, and inspiration every where you go. The different smells of the New England seasons and the seafood that is fresh off the boats are things that I keep near and dear to my heart. I will forever be 6 years old building sandcastles pretending to create my own house out of sea glass and blue & purple mussel shells. Growing up in this calm setting has allowed me to take certain elements and principles of design and apply them to my own life in the way that I decorate and become inspired. As my grandmother used to say, “Never be afraid to take your shoes off and take a moment to soak in your surroundings... and then make a footprint in the sand.

Always, Katie Reilly 3

Who We Are

BEACHED is a magazine about coastal

home decor. Beach homes have a very relaxed and open feel to them creating a more peaceful living space. The ocean has an abundance of color schemes, shapes, textures, rhythms and many more design elements and principles. Inspiration from these natural spaces is far from limited and can be added to any home or space.

ELEMENTS OF DESIGN

5

LINES 6

Horizontal Long Beach Boardwalk Rockport Massachusetts

The horizontal lines of boardwalks and the horizons create calming and relaxing feelings to any visual. Creating long lines around a room using furniture such as a table or couch can elongate a room and create a peaceful setting. 7

VERTICAL

LINES Vertical lines are used as elements in design to lengthen the look of a room or object. These lines give a space the feeling of strength and dignity in formal spaces.

This sitting area off of a kitchen has short ceilings and a small, wide area. The two cabinets on each side of the short couch add vertical length to the room giving the illusion that the ceiling is much taller. 8

Tightly Curved Lines Tightly curved lines or busy lines can be visually stimulating and create a sense of “fun to the interior space.

A flowing curve in nature can be seen in the rolling waves of the beach rocks

Textures and patterns play a big part in this element. Different pattens in fabrics add life to boring or dull spaces. 9

CURTAINS ARE ALSO A GREAT WAY TO KEEP IN THE HEAT DURING THE HARSH NEW ENGLAND WINTERS.

Curved Flowing

Lines Curved flowing lines can be seen as resembling the rough ocean waves. They are long lines that have soft edges and curves creating a very clam and peaceful movement.

Adding a long curtains can enhance the length of a room and add a sense of volume. This added dimension

10

TEXTURE

TACTILE TEXTURES

Woven textures are a great way of creating a feel for texture. The fabric used in this couch gives it a grainy look and creates a nice patterned texture. 12

REFLECTIVE TEXTURE When a light from a fixture or sunlight will hit a reflective surface and be reflected upward to give the room a brighter feeling.

Using a polished granite counter top can create a highly reflective surface. In a kitchen, this type of counter top is incredibly easy to clean and reflects light upward to give the room a brighter feeling.

13

NON-REFLECTIVE BEWARE! Rugs need plenty of maintenance and upkeep. Cotten rugs clean up the nicest!

Rugs have great nonreflective material that soaks up the sunlight and add a softness and warmth to an area. There are many patterns and fabrics that can be used to match the scheme of your house.

These rugs fill up the negative space on the floor and define the area of a room. The volume of the brown rug determines the outline of the living room of this open house

RUGS.. RUGS.. and more RUGS!

14

IMPLIED TEXTURE An implied texture is when an object such as a wall or floor gives the impression that it has a texture or 3 dimensional aspect when in reality it is flat and smooth. Implied texture is read visually not by touch. This patterned floor has added something new and different to a plain wood floor and visually adds interest to the observer to see if it is smooth.

LIGHTS

16

TASK LIGHTING BATHROOM Bathroom lights are designed to illuminate the face for personal grooming and creating balanced light.

REMEMBER! Task lighting should ALWAYS be paired with natural or ambient light when possible to avoid unnecessary light and dark contrasts.

KITCHEN This room uses two different types of light fixtures as task lights; recessed lights and minipendant suspended decorative luminaries. These lights are used for hand-eye coordination for preparing meals and light for when someone will sit at the bar or island to eat.

17

ALL NATURAL LIGHTING Natural lighting is pure sunlight that comes through windows throughout the day. It can make the colors of the room vibrant and happy. Depending on the season the color can lean towards a warmer or cooler color. The light in this golden painted room creates a very vibrant and warm feeling.

18

ALL NATURAL

FLOOR LAMPS LIGHTING

Natural lighting is pure sunlight that comes through windows throughout the day. It can make the colors of the room vibrant and happy. Depending on the season the color can lean towards a warmer or cooler color. The light in this golden painted room creates a very vibrant and warm feeling.

Floor lamps are a great way to have portable light. They provide light near seating areas such as this chaise for tasks such as reading or hand related tasks. 19

TABLE LAMPS Table lamps illuminate light upward and downwards as ambient light to illuminate a small space. Lamps can also add balance to a room or table like in the image to the left. Table lamps are often on side tables or bedside tables used as task lighting.

{

{

Choose lamps that are similar in size and shape to have unity in the room. The glass base of these lamps are perfect for a seaside feel representing the sea glass found on the beach.

COLORS

NEUTRAL PALETTE

{ GO FOR A WALK! Getting out into the world and the environment around your own home can give you inspiration for colors, different patterns, and what palette you might like in your own home.

{ INSPIRATION

A NEUTRAL PALETTE CONTAINS VERY NATURAL AND LIGHT COLORS. WHITE,BROWNS, YELLOWS, BLUES & GREENS ARE ALL BASIC COLORS THAT CAN BE FOUND IF WALKING ALONG THE SHORE AND CAN ADD A VERY CALMING AND RELAXING FEELING TO ANY ROOM.

22

MONOCHROMATIC PALETTES BEACH STYLE HOMES LOVE TO USE THE BOLD WHITE COLOR AS THE MAIN COLOR OF A ROOM.

SPLASHES OF COLOR CAN BE ADDED TO THESE TYPES OF PALETTES THROUGH FURNISHINGS AND ACCESSORIES SUCH AS STOOLS OR A SIDE TABLE.

23

DIRECT ANALOGOUS COMPLEMENTARY SCHEMES COLORS

Direct complementary colors are exactly what the name sounds like. They are colors that are exactly opposite on the color wheel.

An analogous color scheme are colors that are adjacent on the color wheel. The warm tones include the yellows, oranges, and reds while the cool tones are blues, greens and purples. Generally 3 to 4 of the colors are used in a single scheme.

This Lake house room uses different tones and hues of blue and red to accessorize this room. Even tho they are not the pure hue color they are still direct complementary colors.

The color scheme of this room uses a variety of yellow hues and tones and there are accent colors of blues and greens in the pillows and curtains.

SPACE

Positive Space POSITIVE SPACE

...Is the space filled in with a two or three dimensional form or shape

The positive space in this room are the objects that are taking up space. The area of this bathroom holds three dimensional objects such as the shower, countertop, sinks and cabinets. The space is transformed with this objects taking up space, creating a closed in space that is peaceful and not to crowded.

27

NEGATIVE SPACE ... is the area between the forms in a two or three dimensional design.

The negative space in this bathroom can be seen in the area where there are no objects taking up space. This can be seen in between the shower and sinks and the area walking up to that spot.

28

CROWDING TERRITORIALITY The term crowding represents the area where people are grouped together in tightly restricted areas. These are areas like living rooms, small nooks in kitchens, or dining rooms where people gather to talk and have company

Territoriality is the personal attachment to a certain territory or space.

Some homeowners will be very careful about what rooms they have company in and what activities go on there. Some people don’t allow food in their living rooms to keep everything precise and 29

SHAPES

ABSTRACT SHAPES This coffee table has a very abstract base which resembles the shape of coral from a coral reef. Abstract shapes are representations of real life images or objects in a different view.

Abstract shapes can be seen in furniture design and in the fabrics and prints they are covered with.

31

Geometric shapes can be seen in the outline of picture frames that are hung on a wall.

GEOMETRIC

SHAPES

The two- dimensional outline of these rectangular frames create a geometric shapes within shapes. The general outline of the entire space also creates a rectangular shape.

SHAPES

Organic The outline shapes of the starfish that were printed on top of the fabric creates natural lines from the animals.

Each leg of the starfish are original, flowing, and organic.

33

DYNAMIC SHAPES

The word dynamic is characterized by change in an object and the activities that go on during that change.

This bedroom curtain contains thousands of different shapes that are constantly moving or changing depending on how the curtain moves or is physically changed. 34

FORM

GEOMETRIC FORMS In this cottage home in Rockport, MA there are geometric forms throughout this kitchen area. These basic forms are of a sphere as the clock, a rectangle seen in the table and a square from the window. 37

Organic

{ These lines are fluid and their inspiration comes from nature and natural lines.

{

We use natural and organic lines as accents to a room. It deletes the idea of repetitiveness and being plain.

37

ABSTRACT FORMS

The abstract shapes of the sea glass pieces create a great back splash in a bathroom or kitchen.

The rope base of this lamp is an organic and abstract design creating new lines and movement.

Abstract shapes can be seen in furniture design and in the fabrics and prints they are covered with This kitchen stool from IKEA is unlike most seating options you would see in a beach cottage. However, its composition of birch wood and its design is very nautical in the way that it looks like it could come off of a boat as some kind of equipment 38

NON-OBJECTIVE FORM Forms are the three dimensional figures made up of shapes in an interior. This table and vase shapes are examples of non-objective forms. This means they have organic lines that create abstract objects or furniture in a three dimensional aspect.

39

PRINCIPALS OF DESIGN

BALANCE

BALANCE

VISUAL SYMMETRY This can be seen in this twin bed room. Each bedding is the same with picture frames hanging above while the dresser in the middle adds a different kind of balance and line of symmetry.

42

VISUAL ASYMMETRY Although this bedroom has the same furniture and windows, the room is asymmetrical because the furniture layout is not directly symmetrical along an axis line. However, the room does have the same amount of balance in weight because the furniture is exactly the same.

43

STRUCTURAL SYMMETRY These two cabinets create structural symmetry on either side of this room. The line of symmetry is down the center line of the windows and next to each end of the couch.

44

STRUCTURAL RADIAL SYMMETRY In this outdoor patio and fire pit, there is radial symmetry created by the Adirondack chairs surrounding the fire pit.

FIRE PITS ARE A GREAT WAY TO ADD TO SUMMER FUN BY ROASTING A FEW MARSHMALLOWS OVER THE FIRE AND GATHERING FAMILY AND FRIENDS IN ONE PLACE. 45

REPETITION THROUGH COLOR In this seaside home, the seafoam green and aqua colors are constantly being used in a variety of materials. This creates unity through the repetition of color.

47

UNITY THROUGH LINES We can see unity in this room from the horizontal lines that are continuous in this room.

The horizontal molding that cuts the room in half creates a calming line along the walls and enhances the hight of the ceiling.

These rectangular table tops continue the horizontal lines throughout the room.

48

UNITY THROUGH SHAPE Common Shapes that we see in all types of houses are rectangles and circles. Most accessories in a home can be pictures,

Here, the home is given a sense of unity through shape by using a collage of rectangular picture frames.

Adding a wreath to the outside windows during the holidays can add a sense of unity to the outside of a home as well.

49

UNITY THROUGH COLOR Adding unity to a room is very easy! Pick one color and look at the other hues of that color in a color wheel or by using paint chips at a hardware store. Once you have found the color pallet you like, those colors can be used in fabrics, wall colors, accessories, and in furniture.

IN THIS COLOR PALLET... the main color chosen was brown. Brown is a very neutral color and has many different hues. On top of this window seat are different pillows with different patterns and colors, but because they are all from the same color or hue, there is a unity through the color of tan and brown.

50

EMPHASIS

FOCAL POINT: STRUCTURAL To create a focal point, you need to have objects that will lead the eye to what you want to be focused on in the room.

THE FURNITURE IN THIS ROCKPORT HOME LEAD THE EYE TOWARDS THE FIRE PLACE, MANTLE, AND CABINETRY.

HAVING FOCAL POINTS CAN ADD EMPHASIS TO ANY MAJOR ROOM IN A HOUSEHOLD 52

FOCAL POINT: VISUAL A VISUAL FOCAL POINT IS CREATED BY HAVING AN OBJECT OR A GROUP BE THE MAIN FOCUS OF A ROOM. THIS SHOULD BE PLACED AT THE HEAD OF A ROOM AND BE ONE OF THE LARGEST PIECES IN A ROOM.

M I R R O R S

A good way to open up a room and make it look bigger is to add a larger mirror as a rooms focal point or to place smaller mirrors around the space.

53

RHYTHM

53

REPETITION REPETITION REPETITION

THE PATTERNS FOUND IN THIS MASTER BEDROOM ADD REPETITION INTO THE ROOM WHILE THE GREENS, BLUES AND WHITES ADD A REPETITIVE RHYTHM TO THE ENTIRE HOUSEHOLDS COLOR PALLET.

55

TRANSITIONAL RHYTHM Transitional rhythm leads the eye without interruption from one point to another. This can be done with crown molding, a carpet runner or a stenciled border. These methods create rhythmically flowing lines that the eye can follow.

In this beach home in Rockport, Mass. there is a clear horizontal line that repeats throughout the house in the kitchen and living room. This molding leads the eye around the room and a flowing and calm way.

56

CONTRASTING

RHYTHM Contrasting rhythm is the idea of having opposing shapes or patterns next to each other in an area. This living room setting has angular shapes such as the couch, fireplace mantle, and the window placed next to the rounded shapes of the side table, the lamp shade and the basket on the floor. 57

CLIMATIC RHYTHM This table seems to be very disorganized at first but then it is seen that there is a pattern or rhythm in the objects that lead your eye down the table. The variation of flowers, candles, plates and napkins add confusion and variety to the area creating the climatic rhythm.

58

SCALE

HUMAN SCALE Human scale is used primarily to accentuate the accessibility of furniture use for the average person. The height of these love seats and the size of the coffee table accommodate a persons needs and accessibility in the room.

60

SYMBOLIC SCALE

A Barbie Dream house is a great way to describe symbolic scale. The objects inside the house are proportional to the size of the playhouse but in reality are much smaller so a child is able to pick the furniture up and move it with ease.

61

AS

OPTICAL DENSITY Optical density is when a piece of furniture has an empty area instead of a solid area or volume. Examples of optical density can be seen in cabinetry and in book cases. The dimensions of the book case takes up a large amount of space in the room while leaving open space inside to store items such as books and plates.

63

ACTUAL DENSITY This upholstered bed from Harden Furniture is a great example of actual density. The frame is solid meaning it does not have any “empty areas and is a solid volume.

64

PRO PORTION

PROPORTIONAL SPACE

{ {

...is the relationship of size between an object and its parts. This can be seen in this ocean inspired fire place where the rocks, star fish and candles are proportional in scale to the size of the inside of the fire place.

66

UN-PROPORTIONAL SPACE This cottage bedroom is an example of unproportional space. The size of the furniture in the room are unproportional to the amount of negative space in the room. To make this room more proportional, an area rug could be added to fill up the empty space or buy a larger club chair instead of a small wood chair.
