Puerto Rico overflows with talent, whether in the visual or graphic arts, culinary arts, music or fashion design. Our island’s architecture stands out against the blue canvas of the sky and sea, a witness to the numerous influences of its culture. Architecture and jewelry share the quest for perfection and originality. The difference lies in their size. As jewelry relates to the human form, architecture focuses on open spaces surrounding the structural design. Interestingly enough, architects use the word “skin” instead of façade to describe glass or other material that envelopes their buildings. The laws of proportion and relation to the human body influence both. Jewelry design focuses on wearable art, while architecture deals mostly with livable spaces. Whether design comes in precious metals or glass or

concrete, it contributes to our sense of worth. Creativity and talent, whether in architecture or jewelry, can stop us in our tracks and make us think. In this year’s Holiday Book, we have selected a sampling of Puerto Rico’s architecture as a beacon of light leading us fearlessly in this 21st century. Whatever the future holds for our very unique island, we know that our art and architecture will be very significant in the way we have earned the respect of the world.
