LETTER FROM THE
Editor
Dear Readers,
Okay, so don’t freak out, but this year is a pretty big year for Reinvented. For those of you who have been following us since the very beginning, you know that this has been nothing short of the craziest ride of my life. I’m an aerospace engineer by degree, and my full-time job, despite what some might think from what they see on my social media, is not running Reinvented. I work on lunar landers for a living, and then I come home and help my amazing team of volunteers bring this magazine and our other programs to life. And on May 20, 2024, I will officially have been doing exactly that for five years . Yep, Reinvented turns five this year!
five years
Now, if you know me even a little bit, you know that I don’t do anything small. Whether it’s starting a print magazine when my only knowledge of paper came from watching The Office or hosting a gala in a rocket garden, this organization has granted me the opportunity to bring my wildest dreams to life And, it’s let me do all of that alongside all of you
So, there was no chance that I could go small for our fifth anniversary, and I’m so excited to share what we have in store for you in 2024 We’ll be kicking off the year with the most fun way to celebrate Women’s History Month, in my completely (un)biased opinion: sending our women in STEM minifigures to the edge of space Yep, in March, we will (or I guess by the time you read this, already have) send hundreds of “ women ” to the edge of space on a high-altitude balloon In July, we ’ re bringing a brand new event to life: a STEM fashion show Be sure to keep an eye out for more announcements about that coming soon, but we ’ re so excited to bring STEM and fashion together in Austin, TX, later this year. Finally, we’ll wrap up the year with another incredible Space Gala where we will bring even more awesome women, nonbinary persons, and male allies together at Kennedy Space Center than we ever have before and dance the night away in our iconic, pink-lit rocket garden.
I couldn’t be more excited about everything we have planned for you this year, and, as always, I’m beyond grateful for your endless support for my crazy shenanigans and all of the programs our team brings to students worldwide. This crazy ride might be five years in, but I promise it still feels like just the beginning of the impact we ’ re going to make for the next generation of girls in STEM.
To Infinity & Beyond,

BY MADELINE DAYBright, bold flowers. Geometric designs and freeflowing patterns. From Christmas-themed nails to butterfly designs, Preemadonna’s Nailbot redefines what traditional nail art encompasses, all while adding an innovative twist to a beloved activity The Nailbot is a smart, creative manicure device that connects to phones via Bluetooth and allows users to take ownership of their creativity and blend beauty with technology. With broad appeal amongst arts & crafts, beauty, and STEM users, the NailbothasbeenfeaturedinGlamour,TechCrunch, and NPR. One of Preemadonna’s central goals is to power creative expression. As a female founder, Walia believes that she and her team have a responsibility to “build a company with, not just for, our community.” And because “young women are the most active users of nail products,” she believes it’s vital to offer experiences for her community to make their own customized makeup and nail productsbybuildingtheirownnailprinterNailbots andcreatingpersonalizeddesigns
FromPoliticstoNailArtMachines
Growing up, Walia remembers loving the experience of painting her nails and experimenting with different designs. However, she had a variety of extracurricular and academic interests. Eventually, she found a passion for politics, leading her to work on campaigns across the country during and after college. “I’m an accidental entrepreneur,” remarks Walia. Walia learned how to combine grassroots community efforts with operational efficiency to run a political campaign. Most importantly, “[she] learned how to manage risk and face rejection,” a skill that proved to be especially useful because “political campaigns are a lot like startups. You build your own desk, are frequently out of capital, and are building a movement around a person ’ s vision for the future” Walia continued to work for political campaigns before receiving an MBA from the University of Chicago and quickly diving deep into technology startups
In Silicon Valley, Walia worked on several high-growth connected hardware start-ups, where she learned what running a startup entailed She performed a variety of product, operational, and marketing functions at these early-stage hardware companies, mainly focusing on building automation She took these lessons from the trenches and her love for creative expression to start her own company and pursue a big product idea called Nailbot.
The Nailbot consists of a manicure device that prints custom nail art and photos over Bluetooth, a tri-color nail ink cartridge, the Nailbot primer, canvas polishes, a top coat, and more The familyfriendly kit is easy to operate and, most importantly, provides a fun and immersive experience for its users For Walia, nails are a “playful, artistic, and social” way to connect communities and bring joy To operate, users first prepare their nails with lightcolored polishes and then design their nail art through the Nailbot software. The actual printing process takes just five seconds; users simply hold their nails under the printer, and their design of choice is printed in one pass. The mobile app, which includes videos that guide the user through the nail printing process, allows the user to customize their Nailbot experience. Nailbot also leverages the camera of the smartphone to size fingernails, perform augmented reality functions and record the art prints! Preemadonna has many other Nailbot nail art and nail painting devices in development for release in the coming years
Builda(Nail)Bot
Preemadonna currently has two available Nailbot versions for consumer sale: a fully built Nailbot Printer Kit, which is Preemadonna’s flagship product, and the recently launched Nailbot STEM kit, which allows users to assemble their own Nailbot and gain hands-on engineering experience!
The STEM kit includes 41 sub-assembled mechanical and electrical parts, including the Nailbot backbone, service station, and phone cradle. Nailbot users gain exposure to engineering concepts such as gear systems, spring forces, push fits, and parts manufacturing through the kit’s guided digital curriculum. By allowing users to build their own bots, Preemadonna “redefines smart beauty in a fun and creative way, ” all while contributing to female representation in the STEM space. A typical assembly takes around 30 to 60 minutes to complete, appropriate for users aged 10-12 with adult supervision and independent users aged 13 and above
Reception of the STEM kit has been enthusiastic One review notes, “I supervised a 12-year-old and 14-year-old [ ] One of their favorite things about the kit was seeing the different parts that make up the Nailbot machine. It was fun to watch them problem solve and collaborate.” Another comments on how “it’s fun to see what parts are used and how they work!” Walia believes that “creating is not just about the product itself but about the immersive experience” and hopes that the STEM kit encourages girls to embrace both their creativity and technical skills. Having supported Reinvented Magazine for two consecutive years, Preemadonna was proud to auction off a STEM kit at the 2023 Space Gala.
She started Preemadonna in her San Francisco apartment with a big product vision, and it has since grown to a multi-prong company that has raised $6 million in seed funding Along the way, Walia has learned several valuable lessons that she eagerly shares with the younger generation First, learn to adapt Walia describes how she rallied her organization after rejections from investors If a pitch could not fully convince investors, Walia adapted, focusing on what Preemadonna could use to build conviction instead of what the company did not have By demonstrating Preemadonna’s existing impact and outreach conducted with the Nailbot, Walia and her team were able to fundraise step by step, securing capital from the Amazon Alexa Fund and Version One Ventures. Second, learn to assess risk and accept rejection. Walia noted the importance of learning to embrace rejection. Even if investors received the Nailbot positively, noting that “their wives or daughters would be customers,” their enthusiasm did not necessarily translate to funding. “Rejection from investors can feel debilitating.” Yet it’s what happens after a rejection that is most important. “Believe in yourself, focus on the positive, learn from your mistakes and keep going.” In the midst of rejections from investors, Walia remained undeterred, finding additional ways to win funding. Those lessons, which she first learned as a political organizer, are a testament to the fact that while defining your own path is not easy, doing so is more than possible.
PoweringtheNextGeneration LessonsAlongtheWay:
“It’s important to give without expecting anything in return, as we hope that the next generation can and will do more ” As a company founded to inspire young creators to embrace and achieve their potential, Walia is committed to supporting community organizations through Preemadonna From working with MakerGirl to Girl Scouts, Preemadonna partners with organizations that build positive STEM environments for pre-teen and teen girls By providing access to Nailbots, Preemadonna leadership, and an immersive STEM curriculum, Walia hopes that young women will feel supported and mentored to pursue fields in STEM She also believes “ a community should feel empowered and benefited from the founders’ stories and product.” Having recognized the “bigger mission around [her],” Walia hopes that her message and vision for the Nailbot can spread beyond just the product itself– that she can also be a part of others’ career journeys along the way.
Coding, art, making, engineering, community. “It’s possible to do all of the above.” “Being serious and traditionally feminine are not mutually exclusive,” and Preemadonna aims to support the dynamic interests and passions of Gen Z and Gen Alpha. Walia highlights that there are options for everyone. Walia also emphasizes the simple beauty behind women supporting women. From her college sorority sisters and best friends, some of whom served as Preemadonna’s first angel investors, she’s felt the power of female networks. Walia has also learned to “believe in other people if you want others to believe in you ” Support is not one-sided, which is why she feels so passionately about Preemadonna’s community partners
Walia’s vision for Preemadonna expands beyond nails She and her team have been working on additional innovations in nail care and are leveraging the technology for applications in body art For now, she’s simply proud of Preemadonna’s progress, from its beginnings, being named a CES Innovation Award Honoree, being selected as a Finalist at TechCrunch Disrupt, and getting their early production runs into the hands of their first customers. Whether working in political campaigns or launching her own smart nail art company, Walia is changing the status quo, one Nailbot at a time.

Ava's approach to each school year involves adopting a guiding word or phrase that reflects her introspective mindset and adaptability. For the first year of her Ph.D., Ava chose the word "readjust." This term holds profound significance, symbolizing her recognition of the need for grace and adaptability in the face of significant life changes These changes included moving to a new city, embarking on her Ph D program, undertaking new research projects, and taking content creation more seriously
This intentional choice of "readjust" signifies a shift in Ava's perspective Unlike previous years, where she focused on short-term accomplishments to leverage her career, this year emphasizes a more profound realization. Ava acknowledged that she is entering a stage of life that resembles a marathon, not a sprint. This guiding word encapsulates the essence of her current journey a journey marked by resilience, flexibility, and a holistic approach to personal and professional growth.
HerCareer
Ava's journey unfolded with a purpose, from her early passion for makeup and science to her discovery of a field that aligned with her interests Her formal studies in cosmetic science were met with enthusiasm by potential employers, and attending events such as the Society of Cosmetic Chemists' Suppliers' Day in New York City expanded her network significantly and opened doors to various job opportunities.

Balancing a full-time student schedule, professional commitments, and numerous leadership roles exacted a toll on her well-being. Ava narrates her continuous journey towards achieving a more balanced work-life equilibrium, acknowledging, "To be successful in all these responsibilities, I often sidelined my health, prioritizing professional goals over exercise and sleep While it's still a work in progress, I'm now learning to decline more opportunities (despite differing opinions from peers) and realigning my priorities by engaging in regular exercise, 3-5 days a week, and ensuring 8 hours of sleep each night ” Recognizing the significance of saying ' no ' and reevaluating priorities is a pivotal aspect of how Ava balances her life.
Ava Perkins's daily routine seamlessly intertwines scientific exploration and creative expression, embodying her work in content creation and her dual roles in research and development. Mornings commence with collaborative meetings, fostering collective brainstorming and offering fresh perspectives on ongoing projects. Formulation checks a meticulous process evaluating color, smell, visual changes, and texture nuances dictate Ava's attention to detail, ensuring each cosmetic formulation aligns with desired characteristics It's important to note that this description reflects Ava's routine several months ago when she was actively working in the industry
Currently, Ava is taking a break from the industry to pursue a PhD full-time. Her day now involves managing a full-time school workload, starting a new research project, and building out a new cosmetic consulting business. Despite this shift, her dedication to scientific exploration and creative expression remains evident.
The heart of Ava's day still beats in the formulation laboratory, where she dedicates significant time to creating, refining, and testing cosmetic products Simultaneously, her role as a content creator continues to flourish throughout the week, with weekends reserved for filming, scripting, and editing Ava Perkins's day underscores her ongoing commitment to bridging the gap between cosmetic science intricacies and a broader audience eager for education and engagement.
As Ava continues her journey as a cosmetic chemist, she remains committed to the educational side of the industry. Initially envisioning a career as a formulator for major cosmetic companies, her evolving interests led her to embrace academia. Ava’s career goals now include teaching cosmetic science long-term and contributing to the industry's growth.
When asked about her biggest inspiration, Ava mentioned her mentor, the director of the University of Toledo's Cosmetic Science and Formulation Design program Dr Gabriella Baki “Dr Baki has consistently proven that it is possible for a woman to be successful, respectable, personable, and impactful in STEM Although she is no longer my professor, her influence has impacted many of my work and career choices. Ultimately, I want to be like her when I grow up. ” Another person Ava spoke very highly of was content creator Jen Novakovich, aka @theecowell, on Instagram. “She was one of the first cosmetic science content creators I followed on social media. It was really eye-opening to learn about the industry from the perspective of someone who thoroughly researches the topics she posts about and challenges the status quo. Additionally, she leads cosmetic science education initiatives that make the field more accessible, which is something I really respect and admire Her work has inspired me to be a more thorough content creator and to question misleading science ”

Is ChatGPT Is ChatGPT Is ChatGPT a Great a Great a Great Personal Personal Personal Stylist? Stylist? Stylist?
BY HANA GABRIELLE BIDONFinding your personal style is a worthwhile journey, especially if you use innovative tools like ChatGPT. In this deep dive into virtual styling, I gathered inspiration from online fashion content creators and leveraged the power of ChatGPT to curate outfits based on my own clothes and my color season.
Before taking a closer look into the intersection of technology and fashion, I want to acknowledge an iconic ‘90s film, Clueless, which served as the inspiration for this experimentation with ChatGPT. The main protagonist, Cher Horowitz, has a personal virtual stylist on her computer. Similar to Cher’s high-tech closet, we also aimed to use technology to help us create our own unique style and aid.
What is ChatGPT?
According to Tech Target, ChatGPT is an AI chatbot that can respond to users ’ questions and demands, such as planning an itinerary for a vacation, writing a movie plot that would win the Oscars, and much more. Additionally, we thought that ChatGPT could become our virtual stylist, capable of understanding and generating personalized outfits based on input. Its versatility should make it an excellent choice for planning outfits inspired by individual preferences
Fashion Inspiration
I took inspiration from fashion content creators, including Christina Mychas (a pharmacist and fashion content creator who uses minimalism as a tool to find your personal style with less clothes), Ellie-Jean Royden (a fashion content creator), and Jean Wang (a social media influencer and business owner of Extra Petite), and incorporated their fashion sense into my ChatGPT outfit planning. From Christina’s minimalist aesthetic to EllieJean’s feminine and down-to-earth fashion sense and Jean Wang’s feminine and formal aesthetic, I explored how AI can help translate my sources of inspiration into wearable and personalized outfits for different occasions.
Discovering Your Color Season
One of my favorite tools that I discovered during my fashion journey was knowing my color season This curated color palette which is determined by features including skin tone, hair color, and eye color guides me in my outfit choices
There are four distinct color seasons: Winter, Summer, Autumn, and Spring. To determine my color season, I consulted with two fashion designers, Dani and Lucy, from Our Fashion Garden for a virtual color analysis. Our Fashion Garden also has a quiz to find your seasonal color palette:
Based on my features, they have determined I am a Dark Winter, Winter’s darkest season. My dominant characteristic is dark, meaning I have primarily dark features (i.e., dark brown eyes and black hair). My secondary characteristic is cool undertones, which makes me look better in silver jewelry than gold jewelry. Like the other Winter subseasons, True Winter and Bright Winter, I have a high contrast between my features
With ChatGPT’s adaptability, I ensured that my curated outfits resonated with my personal style and harmonized with my color season
Defining Personal Style
Influenced by the wide range of aesthetics and styles on social media platforms like Pinterest, Instagram, and YouTube, I am delving deeper into the Style Roots theory developed by Ellie-Jean Royden. Her theory, which is inspired by nature, enabled me to define three core elements of my personal style.
Within Ellie-Jean’s theory, there are eight style roots to choose from: Moon (dark and rebellious), Sun (experimental, wild, and bright), Flower (delicate, pretty, and sweet), Fire (feminine, sexy, and luxurious), Earth (natural and down to earth), Mushroom (classic, elegant, and minimal), Mountain (powerful and strong), and Stone (relaxed and inspired by cities) Though my closet has varying amounts of each style root, I have determined that my top three are Mushroom, Mountain, and Flower. This means that my core style, in three words, is feminine, minimal, and formal. Oddly enough, Cher, Jean Wang, and I have the same style roots combination.
Script with ChatGPT
With ChatGPT, I sought advice on what to wear based on the clothing items I brought in my suitcase, my personal style, and color season. I conducted the experiment for four days, from December 21 to December 24.
Fashion Garden Virtual Color Analysis Quiz

I love how cohesive the colors look in this outfit, and ChatGPT added hints of femininity with the pleated skirt and the mauve pink bodysuit My only complaint is that I could not wear my black ballet flats and insisted on wearing the black ankle boots.

This is my favorite outfit created by ChatGPT. I love the stark contrast between the white knit turtleneck dress with the black hearts and the nude tights with the charcoal gray trench coat and the black ankle boots. One of my cousins complimented my outfit, and I felt amazing wearing this for Christmas Eve.
Final verdict, Final verdict, Final verdict, recommendations, recommendations, recommendations, and conclusion and conclusion and conclusion
Final Verdict
Based on ChatGPT’s performance, my overall rating is around 86%, which means that I’m extremely satisfied with its curated outfits I felt my best walking around the city streets of Pentagon City and riding the Amtrak from Washington, DC to my hometown in Connecticut
A minor complaint that I had with ChatGPT is that it did not approve of me wearing ballet flats at all, even when I told it that it was not snowing Other limitations are that I only used ChatGPT within a short period of time, I did not mention all of the clothes that I had in my suitcase, and I did not have the premium version of ChatGPT.
Overall, I love using ChatGPT as a virtual personal stylist because it helped me save time in picking an outfit that would have taken me more than 10 minutes to figure out and feel comfortable walking long distances without my feet hurting.
Recommendation
For those who are seeking out new tools to utilize within your fashion journey, ChatGPT and inspiration from various content creators are excellent My experiment showcases AI’s potential in curating personalized outfits based on inspiration on the Internet, consulting two fashion designers on my color season, and determining my personal style
Conclusion
Integrating technology and online inspiration creates a unique synergy in the world of fashion ChatGPT personally acted as a reliable virtual stylist in my fashion journey by integrating online inspiration into reality As we continue to explore the endless possibilities of the intersection of AI and fashion, ChatGPT delivers exciting promises of curating personalized outfits and evolving style narratives.
SPACE SPACE CON CON
BY GUEST WRITERS LAUREN SAVAGE AND SUSAN MARTINEZIn November 2023, engineers Susan Martinez and Lauren Savage attended SpaceCon in Paris, France, alongside Reinvented Inc. founder Caeley Looney. SpaceCon is an annual convention dedicated to space and space enthusiasts where the event organizers create an informal, accessible, and inclusive atmosphere for students and space leaders to discuss the future of space exploration and technology. Caeley, Susan, and Lauren spoke on an all-female panel coordinated by Reinvented Inc. that was moderated by the genius behind the Ariane Group’s social media – Mellisandre Lacaille.
Leading up to the event, while planning the panel topics, it was quickly made apparent that many of the struggles surrounding discrimination and harassment women face in the workplace and academia are still global issues. While our panelists initially thought these issues were considered less prevalent in Europe, after meeting with some of the event staff, we quickly realized this was a false general misconception and simply not true
One of the organizers of the conference shared a personal story with the panel about facing harassment during her Ph.D. studies and ultimately being forced to leave the program. European countries do not yet have the same extensive anti-discrimination laws that the USA has. However, we all know that those laws are not the solution The panel was informed that diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI) is not as openly discussed or accepted across Europe, nor are general conversations of the struggles many women face in STEM, from outright harassment to general feelings of loneliness.
A major recent contributor to the shift in STEM culture in the US, particularly in the space industry, is the number of startup companies embracing DEI Europe’s space industry is monopolized by one major corporation, and the culture is largely that of traditional aerospace: homogenous, closeminded, and shrouded in discrimination.
Knowing all of this, the panel crafted a conversation around addressing these “taboo” topics – from personal stories of harassment experienced in the workplace in the US to the benefits of diversity in the workplace, to how women ’ s bodies change in space, and even how periods function in zero gravity In addition to shattering the silence on these issues, the panel was excited to discuss the future of lunar operations since all three of the panelists are engineers working on lunar exploration programs. The panelists were honored to represent Reinvented and the women working on lunar engineering in Paris!
Her Journey
Career paths are rarely linear, and Asia Fee’s remarkable journey is no exception. As a young girl, she became interested in cosmetic science because she noted that there were no products made for young women who did not match stereotypical beauty standards In high school, she impressed her friends when she started creating her own lipsticks. She found that she had a passion for cosmetic science, yet she was not as supported as she could have been because the field was so obscure.
When it came time to apply to college and select her major, Fee chose to pursue general chemistry where she found herself “loving one of the most hated categories of chemistry that people despise and think is so difficult”: organic chemistry Upon graduating, she secured a fulltime position as a Laboratory Technician, but still found herself looking to return to what she had loved when she was younger: cosmetic science. Following the COVID-19 shutdown, she found herself making her own lip glosses. She often made more than she could use, and decided to offer them to friends and followers on social media who encouraged her to go back to her original passion and turn it into a thriving business With that, her company, Alchemist Asia, was founded
Alchemist Asia
Merging Science and Cosmetics
Asia Fee founded Alchemist Asia with the goal of challenging the status quo As she created her brand and company, she thought about what she would have wanted to see as a young girl growing up with a passion for cosmetic science She aimed to combine the feminine side of the makeup industry with her background in science.
Some beauty brands claim that too much chemistry in their products make it unnatural, while, on the other hand, in a chemical lab, wearing makeup is often considered unsanitary or unprofessional. With Alchemist Asia, she wrote a new story by creating a brand where being feminine and working in the lab weren’t mutually exclusive, and along the way she took the time to explain and consider the science behind the makeup she was wearing and creating
The company began with a lip gloss and scaled up, but the first lip gloss was something that a person could wear on a daily basis as a subtle way to begin feeling comfortable wearing makeup in labs and other STEM spaces. The company focuses on supporting girls across the spectrum, from girls who want to wear full face makeup to girls who do not like wearing makeup often While the brand is more feminine, they also have products that can be considered neutral for all who may want to wear them For example, the company has had men purchase the lip gloss because it is more of a lip oil and can help anyone feel confident while wearing it. The brand focuses on diversity and inclusion, making sure everyone feels represented in the products offered.
When it comes to innovating, Fee said her company focused on reading the audience She would take feedback from both the beauty lovers and the science community to create her makeup brand The staples of Alchemist Asia are the basics, from lip glosses to face masks to skin cream. As a desire arises in her customers, the company will also do soft launches so that Fee can innovate and give her customers something new and fun to try out. Not only that, but Alchemist Asia also ensures that those same customers understand how the makeup is made via fun videos These videos are carefully created so that the

are no ‘leftovers’ sitting on the shelf for a long time until they eventually expire, her company produces small, made to order batches of cosmetics. The company only makes as much as they need, ensuring less products need to be tossed out in the end. This also ensures everything is as fresh as possible for the customers Fee mentions that items such as facial care products with water-based ingredients are made within a few weeks so it’s often fresh when the customer orders and receives it.
practice they are beginning to implement is the Green Alchemy project. This allows customers to send in certain products in glass containers for refills. For now this is only available to communities close to their base of operations, but it is something the company is looking to expand when possible.
Collaboration and Outreach
Alchemist Asia aims to support underrepresented communities and give them a voice in the beauty industry Fee has focused on markets and given talks at high schools located in low-income communities. Although the revenue may not be as high as in other areas, it is just as important to focus on them and give them a voice that they are not given by large beauty companies. Similarly, Alchemist Asia has worked with Reinvented and other grassroot nonprofits and individuals in the STEM industry to reach more outlets for women and non-binary individuals and those that are misrepresented
Alchemist Asia does not only focus on the beauty industry They have collaborated with beach cleanups and other environmental nonprofits to raise awareness and offer volunteer service because the company understands that the cosmetic industry produces a lot of waste, and it’s important to find ways to give back.
Next Steps
Alchemist Asia aims to continue to grow and expand in the coming years Fee says that the aim is to continue to be involved within local and broader communities In the future, she hopes that they will be able to host group classes where those interested can come and make their own lip gloss while the teacher walks them through the science. They also aim to continue to increase their refillable product opportunities and are looking to expand their market to reach beyond local communities.
Challenges, Successes, & Everything In Between
The company did start up using all plastic products because as a small business that was just starting out that was what was initially cost effective, but as soon as Alchemist Asia was able to build up revenue, they switched to compostable boxes and mailers and even obtained glassware to use for their containers. Another sustainable
No success story comes without its challenges. With Alchemist Asia, as a new startup, financial concerns were a large part of the early challenges until a customer base and steady revenue stream was established. With logistics, it was important to understand the audience and how to communicate about the company
Fee described that she, however, was prepared to face this challenge due to a class she took while at university; specifically, a drug discovery course that was co-facilitated by a chemistry professor and a business professor who both worked at Amgen (a biotech company). Though both focused on different fields, as the students did, to understand the pharmaceutical industry students had to
gain a deeper understanding of both chemistry and business. When she first started Alchemist Asia, Fee referenced her class notes frequently to help her. Understanding that there are people out there who can help you is important, because accepting help from others rather than going into it alone will help you succeed.
Another thing that Fee has noted is that she has worked with clients to make unique formulations to match a variety of skin tones, and has realized that 9 times out of 10, they are black women who have been denied by different formulators. She’s gathered that most are told by forumlaters that “that’s such an expensive and time worthy thing” and that those formulators don’t view those shades as fitting of their shade ranges. It is more important now than ever to be open to conversations regarding diversity, equity, and inclusion.
Personal Challenges
In college, she had an amazing chemistry cohort which came from different backgrounds but came together to get through chemistry together. However, there were many instances where she had to fight and advocate for herself in order to succeed. Even when she had to go toe-to-toe with a professor over course material, she did it because it was important to respectfully stand up for herself even though there were many risks associated with it. She also knew that if she didn’t, future students would go through the same battles: “If you don’t [stand up for yourself], future students will go through the same thing, and it’ll build up ”
struggle, you need to be in those rooms so that someone else can come along the next time and push it even further”
To college students, she advises that you don’t rush through your schooling. She feels that with the societal pressure to finish the degree in four years, she rushed through the material without understanding everything she feels she should have. She focused so much time on getting good grades by getting the work done instead of learning, which is one of her biggest regrets Her advice to current students is to “not take more units than you can handle If you are good with 12 stay with 12 Don’t go above that, you don’t have to finish it all in four years ”
Asia wanted to leave our readers with a question: “For people who are either loving the beauty space or who have been intimated by the beauty space or just anything as a whole, what would you love to see that you haven’t? What do you need to see more of and where do you need support?”

Intro to Cosmetic
What is Cosmetic Science?
Cosmetic Science combines a variety of scientific disciplines, including chemistry, biology, pharmaceutical sciences, and chemical engineering, to apply it to the research, creation, testing, and application of cosmetic products. Cosmetics can include makeup, lotion, perfume, shampoo, nail polish, and even toothpaste!
Cosmetic scientists are not only responsible for ensuring that the products they create and test will be safe when applied directly to hair or skin, but must also ensure the product maintains its fragrance, potency, and shelf life
What do cosmetic scientists do?
1. 2.
Study
molecular interactions of specific substances.
By understanding the chemistry of a myriad of substances, cosmetic scientists can experiment with different materials to create and improve cosmetic products They must carefully study and select ingredients based on their chemical properties, safety, effectiveness, and regulatory compliance because these constituents are the foundation of the very products they design.
Conduct safety testing.
Cosmetic scientists oversee rigorous tests to ensure that the products are safe for the people who use them. These evaluations may include skin irritation tests, allergy tests, and stability tests in order to give consumers a comprehensive understanding of the potential risks associated with the product. The tests usually occur in specialized laboratories, often conducted on human volunteers for skin irritation and allergy tests, or on samples in controlled lab environments for stability tests
3.
Perform consumer and market research.
Cosmetic scientists not only develop cosmetic products – they also understand how their products meet consumer needs and demands. They work to learn more about the target audience and adapt to market trends to guide the creation of new products One recent makeup trend on social media has been embracing natural skin tones rather than covering it up with heavy foundation, and in January 2024, CeraVe comes out with their Advanced Repair Ointment cream, all about soothing dry skin, which is a product that directly responds to the popular skincare products that trended all over social media platforms in 2023 Additionally, Rihanna's Fenty Beauty was one of the initial celebrity makeup brands to offer more inclusive shade ranges of foundation.
4.
Engage in sustainable and ethical practices.
As consumers are becoming increasingly aware of malpractices in many industries, they are constantly looking for ways to support companies that engage in ethical practices. Cosmetic scientists leverage this by developing products with sustainability in mind, and, now, many brands are considering the environmental impacts of their makeup and are starting to ethically source their product’s ingredients.
What can you do to become a cosmetic scientist?
Embrace problem-solving skills to overcome obstacles, as cosmetic scientists always need to find creative solutions during product innovation and development processes!
Pay close attention to detail, just like how cosmetic scientists carefully conduct research, record data, and follow regulatory guidelines.
Think outside the box! Creativity and innovation are key for cosmetic scientists to imaginatively develop new or improve existing products.
In high school, taking chemistry and biology courses would be invaluable to pursuing cosmetic science in the future because these courses teach the foundational principles that cosmetic science rests upon. Don’t be afraid to take STEM courses!
In college, attaining a Bachelor’s degree in science would tremendously help your cosmetic science career. Some possible degree subjects are biology, chemistry, chemical engineering, and pharmaceuticals.
Typical day of a cosmetic scientist
1. 2. 3. 4.
Project Planning and Meetings:
Cosmetic scientists participate in team meetings with their coworkers and develop a strong bond with each other! They discuss project achievements, set goals, and even coordinate with other departments in order to keep progressing They could be planning new makeup launches, discussing reformulation of existing makeup, or troubleshooting production issues This is a crucial part of a cosmetic scientist’s workday because it lays the foundation for all makeup production this is where creativity runs wild to develop or improve products!
Laboratory Work:
Much of a cosmetic scientist’s day could be spent in the lab, formulating new makeup or adjusting existing formulations, conducting stability testing to see how a product or ingredient behaves over time under different conditions, performing analytical tests to ensure quality and consistency, evaluating the efficacy of products through various tests, and documenting all experiments and results carefully This requires careful attention and precision!
Provider Interaction:
Cosmetic scientists often communicate with ingredient providers to learn about new materials, request samples, or discuss technical details and specifications Usually, makeup brands source their ingredients from multiple providers
For instance, L’Oreal sources ingredients from a variety of chemical manufacturers for synthetic ingredients, as well as botanical suppliers for natural extracts
Another example is Estée Lauder works with providers for high-quality pigments, emollients, and fragrances, as well as premium packaging manufacturers for their luxury packaging needs.
Collaboration with Other Departments:
Many cosmetic scientists may work with marketing or public relations (PR) teams to provide scientific insights for product promotion, discuss packaging options with the packaging team, or confirm with the quality control department
Space Gala
Hey Reinventors!
My name is Myah, and my callsign is “Mogwai.” I am 13 years old and an aspiring astronaut. Last year I had the opportunity to attend the Space Gala 2023, so I'm going to tell you about my experience as one of the youngest guests in attendance.
Reinvented Inc.’s Space Gala is a huge, space-themed celebration of women in STEM. The first thing I remember seeing when I arrived at the Kennedy Space Center was the large number of women everywhere who all experienced their own amazing STEM journeys I was so overwhelmed because I knew there were other girls out there like me, but I had never seen so many in the same place The dinner and the speeches were incredible, but the thing I spent most of my time doing was taking cute pictures, of course, because who doesn't want pictures in front of a pink rocket garden? I also spent the evening talking to as many people as I could. By the end of the night, I had talked to nearly 100 people, and every single person was so inspiring and shared at least one thing I could learn from them.
Since the Space Gala, there hasn’t been a moment where I've been without advice and encouragement from the people I met in the rocket garden. It was an awesome experience to be able to dance to “Barbie World” in my own version of a Barbie world with all of the inspiring and supportive women that I could have ever imagined right alongside me
The Space Gala was truly an amazing experience for me and reminded me that women belong in STEM and, more importantly, that we can be as girly as we want while doing it It is safe to say that the Space Gala has made a huge impact on my life and I am so grateful to have been able to go!
Dreams can defy gravity,

Winged Eyeliner GeometryofthePerfect
BY:JOCEEHOLLADAYThe world is an endless canvas of patterns, symmetries, and shapes. Ancient philosophers hundreds of years ago noticed frequent patterns and asked the question – why do flowers often grow in clusters of 3, 5, 8, 13, or 21 petals? This puzzled them - why not 4,6, or 12 petals instead? It turns out these numbers are common numbers found throughout nature. They are described by a mathematical function called the Fibonacci Series. These numbers describe more than just flowers – they can also apply to our beauty standards and the ideal winged eyeliner shape.
FIBONACCI SERIES
The Fibonacci Series is a pattern commo the organic world, from the spirals of arrangements to the shape of a seashell t patterns seen in trees. The Fibonacci s describe the shape of galaxies and the pr human body.
Part of the wonder of the Fibonacci series
The series is just a collection of number grade math is needed to calculate these nu previous two numbers, add them toge becomes the next number in the series
In nature, the recurrence of numbers in the Fibo series persists because of their stability. This sta arises from the intrinsic mathematical properties o Fibonacci series that enable efficient pa arrangements, promotion of growth patterns, structural balance. Nature likes things that work effic and look symmetrical, and that's why Fibonacci num are chosen during evolution.
The prevalence of the Fibonacci series in natural pa also raises the possibility that these numbers play a r shaping our cultural ideals of beauty We can under this relationship when we look at the Golden Ratio
GOLDEN RATIO
The Golden Ratio is another very common number found in nature that is derived directly from the Fibonacci series. By taking any two sequential numbers from the Fibonacci Series and dividing the larger one by the smaller one, we arrive remarkably close to 1.619, a number more commonly known as the Golden Ratio.
Let’s jump back to ancient philosophers' question – why flowers typically have 3, 5, 8, 13, or 21 petals? The answer lies in more than mere chance; it stems from the optimization of sunlight absorption and efficient packing, both of which are addressed by numbers in the Fibonacci series When arranging five petals around a circle, each petal occupies approximately 0 618034 degrees per turn Ring any bells? Yes, it's the golden ratio!
Additionally, you observe this ratio, 1 618, in other parts of nature – including all over your body! The ratio of your hand compared to your hand + forearm is 1.618. The length of your foot compared to the length of your foot + shin is also 1.618! Some studies suggest that the closer one ' s proportions align with the golden ratio, the more visually pleasing they are perceived to be.
We can take a closer look at the Golden Ratio by looking at the shape of a seashell. This shape is called a golden spiral, and it is another way to represent the Fibonacci series
GOLDEN SPIRAL
A golden spiral is created by putting squares together of the size of the Fibonacci series and drawing a line from corner to corner following this curve The golden spiral is a shape called an Equiangular Spiral; if you were driving a car along this spiral, you would need to keep turning the steering wheel tighter and tighter. If you spiral too much, you’ll get a circle! Too little, and you’ll get a line.
To provide another flower example, notice that a rose also follows the shape of a golden spiral. A rose needs to optimize for the highest density of rose petals and maximum sunlight exposure. Like the case for a lily, the Fibonacci series allows the rose to optimize for both.
Many objects follow this shape, including a rose, your ears, pinecones, and your face. Furthermore, your eyes, mouth, and nose are all situated in golden sections of a golden spiral. This shape is also responsible for the perfect winged eyeliner.
Makeup I S A R T
Makeup is art. Just like all art, there are patterns and order to it. And when it comes to creating a “cat eye sharp enough to kill a man, ” the perfect winged eyeliner follows the same shape as the Fibonacci series.
By achieving a precise cat eye, you align yourself with a lineage of esteemed artists who have integrated the Fibonacci series into their creations One famous artist you have likely heard of, Leonardo Da Vinci, often used the Fibonacci series in his art One such piece is his most famous masterpiece, the "Mona Lisa "
This painting demonstrates the implementation of the golden spiral to guide the viewer's gaze across the painting When looking at this painting, your eye travels from her face out and around and down to her hands, following the golden spiral! The aesthetic allure of these spirals and ratios accounts for their frequent appearance in art

What do you value when meeting people who would like to work with/for you?
When you find great people, hire them
Depending on the work environment, I am looking for someone who can be part of a team, communicate their ideas or grievances, and be flexible. I really like working with problem-solvers and gogetters but I also value people who are task-masters I try to make sure that I delegate the work that needs to be done, and then hire someone whose strengths are my weakness. When working on a team, I try to empower people to work within their strengths.

Sometimes, I feel like LinkedIn is toxic. How would you suggest we can tackle constant comparison on social media?
Do you have any tips when trying to network with others? How important would you say “small talk” is?
Having a great network is important – I have received the majority of my opportunities by having a great network That being said, it takes work and time I like to start small I start with a small networking event or online space around a subject that I enjoy. Networking can be connecting with the speaker or other people in the workshop Personally, I am not a huge fan of small talk; I am more of a fan of intentional talk To me, this means that you shouldn’t feel forced to add something to the conversation. If you are looking for something to talk about, you can always talk about a recent project or something interesting that is happening in the field you are passionate about
It is said that comparison is the thief of joy. This can easily be the dark side of social media If it is not a tool that you can use to spark joy, then I recommend using it less or reevaluating how you are engaging with it. You can also set limits on the amount of time that you spend on social media or take complete breaks from it all together When you use social media, you can also consider following tags or accounts that you are interested in or find inspiring Or you can step away from social media altogether Do what is best for your own peace and mental health
What piece of advice would you give to someone who wants to transition to a career in STEM?
My advice for someone who wants to transition into a career in STEM is to start where you are at If you are currently working a role, look and see if there is a similar role at a tech company. If you aren’t at a tech company, talk to your IT team and see if you can shadow them Shadowing people in the field and listening to what they do is helpful when you are thinking of transitioning into any role. If you are in college, start by taking an introductory class. It’s lowcommitment (and can always be used as an elective if you don’t want to transition) but it will give you insight into the field, and your cohort will be helpful in networking into the field Once you are done exploring the field, start working on projects related to the field that you want to go into and create a portfolio Then, start applying to roles! You might not get the role right away, but each interview is one step closer and is a great learning experience.
Do you believe in New Year's resolutions? What are your goals for this year?
I do believe in New Year’s resolutions and Life OKRs Instead of focusing on changing myself, I try to focus on what I want to add into my life My goals are broken down into fitness goals, financial goals, relationship goals, and career goals. My main goal this year is to go on a backpacking trip, start saving for a house, accomplish my work OKRs, and find a good therapist
If you had to pick a different career path, what would you pick?
It’s hard for me to think about doing a different career since I switched careers to work in technology and now have my dream career I think my next career step would be a C-level role at a tech company as a Chief Strategy Officer Put in a perfect world, my dream world we would find a way to compensate caregivers for the work that they did at home
Public speaking is a fear amongst many. Do you have any tips on how to manage nerves before and during a presentation?
You are not alone, public speaking is a very common fear. Some different ways to manage your nerves is to ground yourself with a deep breath You can also uncross your legs and place both feet on the ground. Remember that people are there to listen to you because you have something important to say and you were chosen because you are capable If you are giving a talk, give one on something that you are passionate about and wellversed in. Your natural enthusiasm will help with nerves. Lastly, remember that you are human so if you don’t know the answer, or need them to repeat the question or have a thought that escapes you, that’s totally fine. Just showing up is a win!
