Blueprint for a 'grand projet' in Saudi Arabia We reveal the details of the multi-billioneuro plans for a "historic" collaboration between the kingdom and France PARIS. France and Saudi Arabia reached agreement last month on a grandiose cultural and tourism collaboration that is not only a coup for President Emmanuel Macron's soft-power diplomacy but may also be a major vehicle of change in the Middle Eastern kingdom. The 2D-page document, seen by The Art Newspaper, was signed in Paris by France's foreign minister, Jean-Yves Le Drian, and Prince Badr bin Abdullah Al Saud, the governor of Al-UIa province, in the presence of Macron and Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud (known as MBS). Hailed as "historic" by the Saudi media, the ten-year deal gives France an exclusive role in a project potentially worth tens of billions of euros in an area almost the size of Belgium. It also confirms the role that culture, tourism and the arts could play

in the opening-up and modernisation of the country, in line with the Crown Prince's Vision 2030 plan. Al-UIa is horne to Al-Hijr, a Unesco World Heritage Site since 2008, currently closed to tourists and visited only by a privileged few. Located in north-west Saudi Arabia, it consists of spectacular canyons and rock-carved tombs around Mada'in Salih, once known as Hegra. The oasis was a trading outpost of the Nabataean kingdom, 550krn south of its capital, Petra, in modern-day Jordan. It includes remains of the Lihyanite culture and the Roman occupation. Top Italian museum director faces trial over gym visits ROME. You can raise millions for your museum, but you cannot go to the gym. This seems to be the sobering lesson to have emerged from the latest shockingtale of bureaucratic ineptitude in Italy. Anna (oliva, the well-respected director of Rome's Galleria Borghese, one of Italy's top museums, is to stand trial on charges of absenteeismand defrauding the public purse. The decision was taken by a judge at a hearing in Rome and, following the ruling, the Italian ministry of culture suspended (oliva without pay last month. The action was taken just weeks after the closure of a major, critically acclaimed survey of Bernini's sculptures at the Galleria Borghese, co-organised by (oliva, which generated {2.5m for the institution. The investigation into (oliva began in 2014, when the ministry of culture received an anonymous letter suggesting that she was frequently absent from her office. As part of the probe, the museum director was

Anna Coliva has fallen foul of Italy's Kafka·esque bureaucracy secretly followed for two weeks to collect evidence, which allegedly shows that, on occasion, she would punch in to work before leaving to visit the gym. In total, she was absent from the museum for 41 hours over 12 days, according to evidence reviewed in court. At a hearing, Coliva said that the overtime she had worked more than made up for her absences and that when she left the office, it was usually on

museum-related business. According to sources close to the museum, the allegations were made by a warder who was disciplined for touting tickets to a popular exhibition. (oliva's lawyer, Alessandro Diddi, told reporters that he is "astonished" that the case will proceed to trial, and that there should be no requirement for public officials of (oliva's standing to sign in to work every morning. In a letter in her defence seen by The Art Newspaper, Anna Lo Bianco, the former director of the Palazzo Barberini, said that the ministry's decision to suspend (oliva before she has had the opportunity to clear her name in court could cause "irreparable damage" to her reputation and that of the Galleria Borghese. Under Coliva's direction, the quality of exhibitions and programming at the museum "has not been equalled by any other institution in Italy", she added. Cristina Ruiz

Russian minister issues Biennale warning MOSCOW.As Russla's relations with the West reach their lowest point since the (old War, a senior official at the ministry of culture in Moscow has warned that the country's presence at the Architecture Biennale in Venice, which opens this month (26 May-25 November), may be a target for protests or "provocations". "As the Venice Biennale is one of the biggest and moslimportant venues in the sphere of international cultural exchange, we must be vigilant," said Vladimir Aristarkhov, the deputy culture minister, in April. "The Skripal case proves that [other countries] will stop at nothing-any provocation, so long as it is anti-Russian," he added, referring to the recent poisoning in the UK of a former Russian spy, Sergei Skripal, and his daughter, Yulia. The UK government blames Russia for the attack; Russia's

official position is that the Skripals might have been poisoned by the British. Aristarkhov also issued a warning about the Russian Pavilion's displays. "Please pay particular attention to there being no anti-Russian rhetoric, acts or works [in the pavilion]." he said. However, Semyon Mikhailovsky, the commissioner of the Russian Pavilion in Venice, says that his exhibition has not been subject to any Russian controls. "We don't have censorship," he says. "We don't even present the project to the ministry of culture." Mikhailovsky also dismissed concerns about other countries. The participating countries have just "one common enemy", he says.
