Tory peer involved in controversial sale of Iraqi antiquities Reliefs from Ashumasirpal II's Nimrud palace, fixed to the walls of a Scottish mansion, have been removed, stripped and sold abroad EDINBURGH,A pair oflarge Assyrian relief sculptures, similar to those recently destroyed by Islamic extremists in Iraq, has been quietly removed from an historic mansion in Scotland and sold abroad for £8m, despite concerns that they were part of Scotland's heritage. The sellers were NewbattleAbbey College and the 13th Marquess ofLothian, better known as Michael Ancram, a Conservative peer and former Party chairman. Dating from BC860, the reliefs were stripped of Victorian overpaint shortly before the sale. John Curtis, the British Museum's former keeper of the Middle East, says the removal of the paint is a "shocking and a tragic loss". He says that "in the stripping process vestiges of original Assyrian paint may have been removed". Curtis also privately advised that the reliefs were fixtures and he felt they should not have been taken out of Newbattle Abbey.
Last November the reliefs were quietly exported from the UK. They are likely to go to a private collector or possibly to a museum in the Gulf, such as Louvre Abu Dhabi or the country's planned Zayed National Museum. The pair of reliefs, depicting winged protective deities, were set in the walls of the palace of Ashurnasirpal II at Nimrud, in present-day northern Iraq. Nearly one metre high, they are carved from gypsum alabaster. The panels were excavated by Austen Layard and were acquired in Baghdad in 1856 by the 9th Marquess of Lothian. He installed them in Newbattle Abbey, his 16th-century mansion in Dalkeith, ten miles southeast of Edinburgh. Some years later they were painted, to reflect how Victorian archaeologists believed they would have originally been decorated. They were then framed and set into the walls at the entrance to the mansion's crypt.
In 1937, the 11th Marquess gave Newbattle Abbey to the Scottish nation, for use as an adult education college. At that time the reliefs were apparently considered to be modern replicas and for the rest of the 20th century they remained virtually unknown to Assyriologists. It was not until 2005, when Curtis inspected the reliefs and authenticated them, that their true significance became clear. By this time the family of the Marquess and the college had just begun discussing a possible sale with the London dealer Oliver Forge. It was unclear whether the reliefs affixed to the wall were the property of the marquess or the college, which needed funds to maintain the building. A private arrangement was therefore made to split any proceeds, with around two-thirds ultimately going to Ancram's family. CONTINUED ON PAGE 8 .,
Zimbabwe makes Venice Biennale selections amid political turmoil HARARE,Againsta backdrop of rising economic and political turmoil, Zimbabwe has selected a group of artists to represent the country at this year's Venice Biennale. Cosmos Shiridzinomwa and Georgina Maxim are the first to be confirmed. In January, a dramatic increase in petrol prices announced by Zimbabwe's new president Emmerson Mnangagwasaw widespread anti-government protests. A violent crackdown by authorities followed, with social media and internet servers shut down. The
upheaval has already delayed plans for a new biennial in the country's second city of Bulawayo. Several of Shiridzinomwa's works are currently on show at the Zeitz Museum of Contemporary AfricanArt in CapeTown, in an exhibition of Zimbabweanart titled Five Bhobh:Painting at the End of an Era (until31 March). In the show, his works include Dying Faculties Dying Faculties by Cosmos Shiridzinomwa. one of the artists to represent Zimbabwe in Venice
(2006), depicting a man with his head in his hands in what is presumably an HIV/Aidsward, and Mugabe's Closet (2008), where an open door shows a well-worn jacket hanging over a pile of books and a human skullpeeking out from underneath. A museum label describes the work as "a metaphor for politically sensitive matters that in the past could not be expressed openly". His work has been 99% political in the past, Shiridzinomwa says, and he expects that to be reflected in Venice. "I hope to show new work
because there is so much that has happened of late," he says. "I have ideas that I will turn into paintings about-the situation on the ground, especially the politics." Ofthe current crisis he says: "It's tough. What happened over the past few weeks, the protests and the looting, the burning down of shops, the destruction of property, the army and the police going into people's houses and taking them, it's a bit tense. They are trying to fight fire with fire, and it doesn't work." Tim Cornwell

Tijdens die inspiratiesessie werd de opzet voor dit nummer bedacht. Ditmaal niet door de redactie, maar door mil ennials zelf. Hiervoor had lP een aantal jonge professionals uit de informatiesector uitgenodigd in de KB, om te achterhalen wat zij graag zouden willen lezen over hun generatie. Het resultaat van die brainstorm heb je nu in handen. Een ding was al snel duidelijk: als we het over generaties hebben, mochten we Aart Bontekoning niet overslaan. In een interview met deze generatie-expert lees je hoe millennials in organisaties voor nieuwe energie kunnen zorgen. Verder is lP zelf op onderzoek uitgegaan. Liefst 142 jonge informatieprofessionals werkten mee aan een enquête om de meest gehoorde aannames over hun generatie te toetsen. De uitkomsten zitten vol ver-

Kai Artinger Provenienzforschung in Deutschland
Interviews 2019 steht an verschiedenen Orten in Deutschland zusammen mit vielen internationalen Partnern das Gründungsjubiläum des Bauhauses in Weimar vor 100 Jahren an oberster Stelle. Diese Schule für Gestaltung hat das Bild unserer Umgebung komplett verändert. Ihre Ideen und Umsetzungen sorgten letztendlich für ein neues Miteinander. Dem unübertroffenen, innovativen Ansatz des Bauhaus-Spezifischen wird in mehreren Ausstellungen Raum gegeben, weil seine Impulskraft bis heute anhält (weit entfernt von miSverstandener Wegwerf-Zweckbauweise). Irn Nachrichtenteil dieser Ausgabe sind einige Austragungsorte des Bauhaus-Jubiläums zusammengestellt. Das Bauhaus ist in einer Zeit entstanden, die in ihrer' Krisenhaftigkeit ParaIleien zur gegenwärtigen Situation erkennen läSt. Wieder stehen die Autonomie der Kunst und die Demokratie infrage, erneut wird versucht, Kultur an Nation und Volk zu binden. Mit welchen Strategien haben die rechten Kräfte damals operiert? Und wie hat sich das Bauhaus gegenüber diesen Angriffen verhalten? Der politische Moment des Bauhauses drückte sich nicht zuletzt in seinem Verständnis von einer neuen, sozialreformerischen Pädagogik aus. Dem Bauhaus ging es um Gleichberechtigung, Emanzipation, Internationalisierung, soziales Miteinander, preiswertes und zugleich schönes Wohnen. Die bewuSte Gestaltung der architektonischen wie auch medialen Umwelt sollte der Entwicklung eines neuen aufgeklärten Menschen dienen, der sich in einer durch Massenmedien und Urbanisierung rasant verändernden Lebensrealität zurechtfinden und selbstbestimmt handeln sollte. Das Bauhaus nur als Kunstschule oder einen bestimmten Stil abhaken zu wollen, ist kurzsichtig. Mit der Frage "Wie politisch ist das Bauhaus?" greift am 19. Januar das Haus der Kulturen der Welt in Berlin das Thema bei einer hochaktuellen deutsch-englischen Tagung auf, die in der Frühjahrausstellung "bauhaus imaginista" mündet, in der die Geschichte des Bauhauses in vier Kapitein aufgearbeitet wird. Entdecken wir also das ganze Bauhaus neu in seinem Kontext und seiner verpflichtenden Aktualität für uns. Adelheid Straten
