Designer Ippolita Visits Indy Italian jewelry designer Ippolita Rostagno flew in to Indianapolis for the first time in three years last March. A vast collection of Ippolita’s handcrafted jewelry, including a large selection of yellow gold, was hosted at the Founders Room at the Palladium in Carmel. Guests truly experienced her style, shopping Ippolita’s designs that are “cool enough to covet, classic enough to keep.”

Jaeger-LeCoultre Master Class In June, the master watchmakers at Jaeger-LeCoultre brought watchmaking to Reis-Nichols’ guests at Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse at Ironworks. Each attendee had the opportunity to disassemble and reassemble a Swiss movement, just like our in-house watch masters. Guests experienced firsthand the care and precision that goes into creating a fine Swiss timepiece, then enjoyed dinner at Ruth’s Chris.

here is something so special about a mother-daughter relationship, but when that relationship becomes more than just an everlasting love and turns into a powerful business partnership, you have a serious recipe for success. Joining forces in mid-2014, Frances Gadbois, former designer and co-owner of JudeFrances Jewelry, and her daughter, Charlotte, have mixed their love of color and elegant design expertise to create a fresh and vibrant new luxury jewelry line, loaded with one-of-akind stones and signature gold texturing. Frances’ European heritage, architectural inspiration and design talents make her one of the most intriguing fine jewelry designers in the industry. Now partnered with her daughter, who is also the face of the brand, the duo has revolutionized the world of colored jewelry. Frances and Charlotte, or the “Sloane Rangers,” as they call themselves, travel the world in search of rare, luxurious stones to star as the centerpieces of their uniquely classic designs for the three collections that make up the line. With something for everyone, the Classic, Spectrum and Caviar One-of-aKind collections make up this undeniably elegant brand.

There’s much to look forward to in Frances’ collaboration with Charlotte. Together, the two designers capture the past, present and future to create an aesthetic that appeals to a broad range of personal styles, all with one thing in common: a love for exquisite jewelry.

FROM FRANCES AND CHARLOTTE: TIPS AND INSPIRATION FOR DEFINING YOUR PERSONAL STYLE As a designer, where do you draw your inspiration? Frances: “My background is very architectural. I could be in a hotel lobby and I’ll find a design in the carpet or in the ceiling within the cornice work. And it’s interesting: now that I’m not in Europe all the time, when I go back I notice so much more—in the gates, the doors, the walls and the paneling. I see design everywhere.” Charlotte: “She was an interior designer for 13 years, so that’s definitely where her eye comes from. She’s definitely the artist between the two of us.”

Tell us more about your personal design style. F: “In general, I’m very classic. I am drawn to the timeless yellow gold and diamond look, but I also like to layer in color and feel that it should all be worn together. As I go through

the design process, I envision the whole look—not necessarily who its ‘mate’ is, but how I would wear it. The Sloane Street collection is about interesting color combinations paired with classic elements.” C: “I bring a more on-trend flair when we collaborate on design. The generational gap allows for different perspectives, while still being on the same page as far as our general style.”

Does your jewelry transition from day to night? C: “I think women are scared of wearing nice jewelry during the day. The wonderful thing about our product is that almost every piece is very transitional from day to evening. We tend to use a lot of colored stone halos instead of diamond halos, which makes women more comfortable wearing a big pair of earrings with jeans, and also rocking them with a gown. Sometimes too many diamonds make pieces feel more dressy.”

What advice would you give ladies looking to define their personal style with jewelry? F: “People are nervous about drawing attention. Don’t be afraid, because once you [get attention], you will crave it.” C: “And that being said: Don’t be afraid to not be on trend. Like what you like and wear it and own it. Because if it’s something you love, you’re going to feel good in it, and that is going to shine through. So many women worry about being ‘trendy,’ but fine jewelry isn’t really about the trends; it should be classic and timeless.”

FUTURE is FEMALE armor? What styles will they want to work into their existing collections?” Having an expansive set of archives is also helpful to lean on while designing. While I was designing Naga, it was important to honor the original silhouette in the new iteration. I feminized the silhouette, replacing the scales with leafier interpretations and swapping the red eyes for softer blue sapphire eyes. The newest collection features a number of mixed metal pieces and introduces stones like silver sheen obsidian. It’s a byproduct of volcano, but one would never guess from the stone’s beautiful sheen and sense of light. As we modernize and elevate our collections, adding more gemstones was a natural next step.

Creative director Hollie Bonneville Barden brings a new outlook to JOHN HARDY. Tell us about your first year at John Hardy. I spent a great deal of time really getting to know the brand’s history and our clientele. My first major challenge was to reinterpret the Naga, one of the mythical talisman icons from our Legends collection. When researching the Naga myth in Bali, I discovered stories of Naga represented as a spirit of nature (sky, ocean, volcano) that had great universal symbolism. Working closely with the brand’s artisans helped me grasp a greater understanding of the spirit of Naga in artwork and carved expression. The historical celebration of the raw power and symbolism of Naga formed the overarching concept for the season, which also features new iterations of the timeless Chain, Dot and Bamboo collections. I also had the opportunity to visit our retail partners, many of which are family-run businesses, and connect with customers. Many of our clients are strong, empowered women who are purchasing John Hardy for themselves to celebrate a milestone. It’s truly so inspiring to see this display of female power through jewelry.

What’s it like being John Hardy’s youngest creative director as well as the first female? I am very lucky to hold the role of creative director for such an iconic brand. It’s my personality to take the bull by the horns, which has helped me. Every day there is a steep learning curve, but it is empowering too. Being young offers me the advantage of having a different viewpoint. I have been fortunate to have incredible experiences thus far.

You’re British but now spend the majority of your time traveling between New York and Bali. How do these diverse places inspire your designs? I am attracted to the fast-paced rhythm of NYC and all of the innovative design happening. I’m inspired by its vibrant energy and glamour. Bali has this amazing creative energy and offers a much slower pace. This sort of yin and yang I experience between the two places is very much reflected in the versatility of my designs.

How do you continue to innovate while designing for a brand that has such an iconic look? I am keeping our strong, powerful female clientele in mind. I ask myself, “What do they want to wear as their personal

Horology & Technology An insider’s chat with Indiana native & North America editor of Watchonista, Josh Shanks.

I

f you’re a watch lover, you know Instagram is the place to find the everpopular #wristshot, but you might not know who’s behind the camera. Josh Shanks, also known as @horologyandtechnology, has turned his passion for watches into a career he loves. We got the inside story behind this technologist turned editor.

ASK JOSH:

Born in California and raised in Kokomo, Indiana, Shanks always had a fascination with mechanics and computers. Growing up, he tinkered with computers, planes, cars and model rockets. In the late ‘90s, Shanks would fix up and sell old iMacs. As a teenager, he started blogging about Apple. Then, after college, started working at Apple’s retail store at Keystone at the Crossing and never expected to end up where he is today. Fast forward several years through stints at the Fifth Avenue Apple Store in NYC, an advertising company, and managing technology for investment firms. Shanks found himself working next to the Patek Philippe building in Geneva. Working in Switzerland helped Shanks discover some of the world’s most important watch brands. Shanks’ real passion for watch collecting started five years ago while diving in St. Thomas. His fashion watch, although water resistant, fogged over and rusted after the excursion, so on that very trip he purchased his first Rolex: an Explorer. From there, he “dove” right in, reading any book or forum he could about Rolex and other brands. In 2013, @horologyandtechnology — Shanks’s own dedicated watch Instagram page — was created and it has grown to 55,400 followers. He also began writing about watches for iW Magazine and ProfessionalWatches. Last November, Shanks left his job in technology, traveled for a bit, and then both worlds aligned in Switzerland. Watchonista, at the time, was well known in Europe and was interested in expanding to North America. The rest, as they say, is history. Watchonista North America launched in March of 2017. Shanks now resides New York City and part time in Switzerland.

Instagram has become a huge influencer in the watch industry. How has the social media platform changed your world? It’s really provided me with a connection and outlet to the watch community. Early on, I linked up with Reis-Nichols’ watch director, Vlad (@vdzeletovic), on Instagram. In fact, in a roundabout way, it’s also how I met my girlfriend, who works for a watch brand in Switzerland. It’s amazing how accessible Instagram has made the world of watches. What is it about watches that you find so attractive? I’ve always been interested mechanical objects, including watches. When I was a child, my dad handed down my grandfather’s WWI Elgin pocket watch. Back then, I didn’t realize how it worked, but I was fascinated by all the small gears and springs that brought the watch to life. I’ve always worked with technology. Mechanical watches, in many ways, have similar profiles to the intricacies of technology. There’s always so much to learn about both, so I constantly find myself geeking out about the latest watch movements or innovation. What has been your favorite experience as Watchonista’s editor? Working in watches involves a lot of travel. Being able to see new countries and cultures has been great. Watch journalism is very specialized and you sometimes find yourself in some far-flung place to cover an event or product release. Some favorite trips include a Key West diving excursion to restore coral, the Indy 500 with TAG Heuer, and vintage car racing at Indy with SVRA. Midwest press trips might be my favorite, as it’s nice to come back home and see family and friends. What 2017 Basel releases are you most excited about? There were lots of great watches released this year! If I had to pick: the stainless steel Rolex Sky-Dweller with blue dial, TAG Heuer’s reissue of the Autavia, and Tudor’s Heritage Black Bay chronograph. Outside of Basel releases, I love the new Patek Philippe Pilot (Ref. 5522a) made for this year’s Grand Exhibition in New York.

BASELWORLD AT 100

Celebrating a century of timekeeping innovation!

U

niversally considered the world’s most extraordinary trade show, Baselworld brings together the industry’s most exalted jewelry and watch brands to showcase their exquisite offerings for the coming year. Just as important, store owners, buyers, designers and top industry execs from around the world come to Basel, Switzerland to brainstorm ideas and exchange information—on business, on fashion and on time! It’s an exhilarating meeting place, impossible to visit without feeling totally inspired by the beauty, precision and creativity of our ever-evolving industry. This 100th edition of Baselworld in March attracted 1,300 exhibitors from 40 countries, 106,000 international buyers, and 4,400 journalists. That said, it’s been a tough few years for Swiss watch exports: despite their 60 percent share of watch business worldwide, they’ve been challenged by a strong Swiss franc and political and economic uncertainty around the globe. In order to stay relevant, luxury watch brands now track social changes as well as fashion and financial fluctuations. Nevertheless, Swiss watch business has almost doubled since the early 2000s. Clearly, the 220 Swiss exhibitors at the show have done a brilliant job blending innovation and tradition, drawing on their rich heritage and adding more accessible price points to engage a younger generation. Turning time into objects of beauty, Swiss watchmakers continue to pursue their quest for technical, functional and

aesthetic innovation. Says Reis-Nichols’ owner BJ Nichols, “Baselworld is the most important marketplace and trendsetting show for the world's watch and jewelry industries, the only show that groups all the key players together, from watchmakers, to jewelers, to diamond, pearl and gemstone dealers, to the machine and supply industries. For us, the show is important to cover in order to discover key trends. Going into 2018, watches are definitely getting smaller, back to a refined classic look that never goes out of style.” BY KAREN ALBERG GROSSMAN

Our key watch picks from Baselworld: 1. The new Rolex Sea-Dweller in stainless steel is destined to become the next Daytona. Whereas Rolex is known for its professional performance watches rather than for fancy complications, this watch is special, featuring an annual calendar, GMT function, and a most interesting setting mechanism that requires only rotating the bezel. It’s sharp looking and a steal at $11,350 in stainless (vs. $40,000 to $50,000 in gold).

The Bittersweet is a perfect nightcap for a cold winter night. The bitterness from the fernet melds well with the spiciness from the rye, and the spiced syrup adds just enough sweetness. e are proud to announce our collaboration with Swiss watch brand Breitling, which has produced an exclusive iteration of its iconic Navitimer in conjunction with the Luxury Jewelers Resource Group (LJRG), of which we are a member retailer. The timepiece is distinguished by its Blacksteel exterior, Stratos Gray dial, three black counter dials, black oscillating weight and transparent sapphire crystal caseback. A cult model among pilots and aviation devotees since 1952, the Navitimer chronograph steps things up a notch in a version entirely clothed in black: from its satin-brushed steel case coated with an ultra-resistant carbon-based treatment to the famous circular slide rule serving to handle all operations relating to airborne navigation. Yet this original, modern and technical exterior is not its only distinctive feature. The 50piece Blacksteel limited series is distinguished by its exclusive Stratos Gray dial bearing hollowed black counters and framed by an inner bezel in the same shade. INSHARP FOCUS Atom Moore is a New York City photographer who makes portraits not of people, but of watches. BY JULIANNE PEPITONE

There’s nothing else quite like Atom Moore’s “watch portraits,” which splice details from different watches into a single unreal image for an effect that’s dreamlike yet sharply focused. Here, he tells us more about his unique art.

to see. I print the portraits on giant sheets of metal, which is uncommon and reminds you of the watch’s original form. They’re interesting on paper, but on metal they really come to life.

Why are you drawn to watches? What makes a successful watch portrait? They’re essentially mashups. You can get incredibly granular with macro shots, down to the finest detail. Then I take details from one watch and details from another and manipulate them to make something different. I don’t go into the process expecting to create a certain thing in a certain time period. Sometimes I just like two images. And I work on [the portrait] until it feels done.

Why are people drawn to this art? It isn’t just for watch nerds; it’s visually interesting art. Seeing the details of something so close up changes your perspective on that thing. And the combination adds this unreal element that’s interesting. People will ask, “Is this real? Is this an actual watch?” People see in the images what they want

Photographing jewelry and watches is hard to do. Most jewelry is extremely reflective from all angles, so if you don't take that into account your photo won’t show the quality. My wife and I are both collectors. We were introduced to the RedBar Crew, who meet up [at a New York bar] to talk about and share watches. I got access to really cool watches without having to go into a store, which is huge. And I like seeing how watches change over time. I’ve gone through photos of vintage watches and you can see, oh, in 1974 they changed how the dial looks. Watches age, just as everything does, and they change in very different ways.

What’s your favorite watch? The one that’s currently in front of my lens.

SAY “I DOUGH!” Custom doughnuts are the new wedding cake.

T

hese days, trendy, artisanal doughnut shops have popped up all around the country, and those circles of yeasty goodness—dreaded carbs 15 years ago—are back with renewed vigor. So it only makes sense that they’d make an appearance at weddings. Within the past year or two, an increasing number of doughnut walls, tiered cakes, trucks and madeto-order stations have popped up at receptions and as part of the “after-party” (another emerging wedding trend, as late-night comfort food replaces more formal offerings). “It’s becoming more popular,” affirms Heather Jones, the catering sales director for Wente Vineyards in Livermore, California. “We also do an action station with beignets, making them right in front of the guests and providing, say, a cabernet-chocolate dipping sauce. Or perhaps fresh churros with a bourbon-cream sauce. It’s all about PERSONALIZE taking things to the next level.” One big advantage is that it’s easy to personalize the doughnut experience (compared to, for example, a chocolate fountain). For Brooklyn’s Angela and Charla Harlow-Rothschild, “we tried to be very intentional about everything in our wedding to reflect who we are as a couple,” says Charla. Amidst the foodstuffs were two doughnut displays, from Dough and Dun-Well, both local shops. “Dough was the first of the new, trendy spots in Bed-Stuy,” says Charla, “and they hire people from the neighborhood, so we wanted to give them a shout-out.” Angela notes that “Dun-Well is cool, because they create delicious doughnuts that are vegan and gluten-free, perfect for friends who couldn’t share in the cake.” Supporting local business was also important for Kelsea Kirven Gallagher and her husband Patrick at their wedding in Richmond, Virginia. They brought in the Mrs. Yoder's Kitchen doughnut truck for their late-night snack. The Mennonite family-owned business has a huge following for its unusual misshapen glazed doughnuts. “[The business is] wonderfully grounded in family and faith,” says Kelsea, “serving as a great role models for our new marriage. And our guests are still talking about those warm doughnuts two years later!” Jones notes that the desire for a personal touch is common for couples who opt for doughnuts at Wente as well. Rather than order trendy variants like Hibiscus-Passion Fruit, “they will have one or two [classic] flavors that are ‘their’ doughnuts. Meanwhile, a comprehensive tribute to his life’s work, The Art of Shoes, is making a stop at Museum Kampa through November. ore than 2,000 people a day came to view Patek Philippe’s collection of about 450 exquisite timepieces dating back to 1530, including borrowed museum pieces, supercomplications, rare handcrafts and complex movements. The NYC exhibit (only the fourth of its kind to ever take place) ran for 10 days in July, but its impact on more than 20,000 guests will surely last a lifetime. Larry Petinelli, president of Patek Philippe USA, spoke to us about the importance of this historic exhibit. “Our goal was to attract not just the uber-collectors, but also a new generation of young people who might lack a passion for horology but are perhaps interested in history or sports or music. Despite the serious price points, we tried to make the exhibit accessible rather than stuffy. We featured actual artisans at work (enamellers, engravers, marquetry woodworkers) and highlighted some of our more renowned US patrons—Joe DiMaggio, Duke Ellington, JFK—and the timepieces most meaningful to them.” John F. Kennedy remains a superhero in the minds of both Americans and citizens of the world. The timepiece chosen to represent this beloved US president was a Patek Philippe autonomous quartz desk clock that displays the time in Moscow, Washington DC and Berlin, a gift that symbolized

direct communication between Washington and Moscow. The clock (borrowed from the National Archives with strict regulations) was designed by Heinz Wipperfeld and was presented to Kennedy on the day after his famous Ich bin ein Berliner speech. “I was born in December ’63,” says Petinelli, “so I wasn’t around in Kennedy’s lifetime. But I was always intrigued by that era: from JFK’s assassination to the Vietnam War to the first man on the moon. That’s why this exhibit is as much about history as art.” We talked about the incredible Stern family, how they bought the company in 1839 (they’d been a supplier to Patek) and have remained a family business through four generations, an anomaly in the luxury market. (Actually Gen 5, Thierry Stern’s two teenaged sons, were in NYC for the exhibit, thoroughly fascinated…) We talked about the fact that, other than fine watches, few things in life are simultaneously useful, meaningful and investment-worthy, which is why Patek Philippe watches are (as their fabulous ad campaign reminds us) handed down from generation to generation. “It’s hard to imagine passing down my cell phone,” quips Petinelli.
