The wide pavements and manicured gardens of West make a comfortable setting for chic eateries, pretty boutiques and some very special grocery stores. Not forgetting, of course, that this is also home to the famous Portobello Road Market. Ladies lunch in cashmere and a classic style prevails in this smart part of town.

Q& A
MY LONDON BRETT ANDER SON MUSICIAN
Brett Anderson of resurrected Britpop band Suede ponders the contradictions of the capital, notes the proximity of Pret A Manger and Manet, and outlines his aversion to shopping. Oh, and he has a house of solid gold.
What is your London neighbourhood? And how long have you lived there? The estate agents call it Artesian Village, which like any estate agent idiom sounds preposterous. It’s basically the border of Notting Hill and Bayswater. I’ve lived pretty much in the same four streets for about 25 years. Me and Bernard wrote ‘The Drowners’ in a scruffily elegant little flat that’s spitting distance from where I live now when the area was all charity shops and newsagents. I’ve just been lucky enough to always move to bigger and bigger places and now I own a house there made out of solid gold. Do you have any local services/restaurants/stores etc that you rely on? My life hit crisis point when they closed down the Blockbusters on Westbourne Grove but I wrestled myself away from the corporate teat and now have an unhealthy relationship with Video City on Notting Hill Gate.
‘Like all great cities it’s about contradiction and change’ What is your favourite shopping street and why does it pull at your wallet? If I was forced to choose somewhere, my friend Nick Hart’s shop on Savile Row is one of the most beautiful in London. And I’m lucky to live very near Portobello and Ledbury Road which I can sometimes be coerced to wander down. How would you define London style? I suppose it’s on a knife edge between elegance and cross-pollination. London has always been a shifting, pulsing cauldron of different tribes, all pressed together and breeding with each other and creating 20
REIS S.COM
Q& A extraordinary icons of individuality from Beau Brummell to John Lydon and beyond. Why do you think London is such an inspiring capital for fashion and design? I think it’s interesting that it’s simultaneously very English and very not English. It’s a fascinating juxtaposition: tradition and mutability, history and innovation bumping along side by side. Like all great cities it’s about contradiction and change and unpredictability and I find it endlessly inspiring. Are there any looks or styles you have noticed recently on the streets of London? Does people wearing plastic bags instead of shoes count? What is your favourite London eatery? Baileys on Dawes Road in Fulham does the best fish and chips in London. Locanda Locatelli on Seymour Street is rather wonderful too but in a very different way. Where do you head to when the sun goes down? Tell us your favourite night-time haunts. It’s just gigs really. Bush Hall and the Empire in Shepherds Bush are both lovely, but my favourite venue in the world to play or attend is the Royal Albert Hall. My dad was an obsessive classical music fan and virtually used to live there in the 1970s and 1980s. When Suede did a comeback show there a couple of years ago it was possibly the proudest moment of my career. London is packed full of culture, of course. Where do you go to get some? The Tate Britain is always a wonderful destination and of course the National Gallery. I love that you can stumble out of Pret A Manger and minutes later you are standing in front of a priceless Gaugin or Manet. I like to lose myself in the whispering marbled halls among the Bruegels and Boschs and Cranachs.
DAYLESFORD, WESTBOURNE GROVE
What do you think is the most surprising thing about London? I don’t know if it’s particularly surprising but I love the way London can swallow you up. It’s so huge you can be completely anonymous and there’s never any of that gossipy claustrophobia you get in smaller places. Plus its constantly shifting nature means that you can never really get to know it: there are a million different Londons and it’s that essential mystery that is so, so compelling. Lastly, can you share with us a favourite place in London – somewhere ‘undiscovered’ and off the beaten track? There’s a hilarious little Austrian bar called the Tiroler Hut on Westbourne Grove. We always used to go there to get a late drink after the pubs had shut but then would find ourselves drunkenly at sea in a world of cheese fondue, Jägermeister, Austrian cow-bell ringing and suspicious looking 70-something men in knee-length leather coats.

Q& A
MY LONDOn SOPHIE WINKLEMAN ACTRES S
When she’s not swept up by a filming schedule that includes ‘Titanic’, ‘Peep Show’ and ‘Two and a Half Men’, Sophie Winkleman (or, if you’d rather, Lady Frederick Windsor) might be found at home in Chelsea, browsing in Borough Market or quaffing a Bellini in the Lanesborough.
Where do you stay when you are in London? At home in Chelsea Do you have any local services/restaurants/stores etc that you rely on? The coffee and croissants at the Polish patisserie in Primrose Hill, the hazelnut icecream at Marine Ices, the glorious antipasti at Harry’s Bar and the Bloody Marys at George in Mount Street. How do you get around the city? Walking, taxis and the 19, 22 and 11 buses. What is your favourite shopping street and why does it pull at your wallet? Probably the King’s Road, as it has a wonderful Reiss, Anonymous, a lovely boutique called Mimi and the wonderful Bluebird Shop. Plus I get some of my underwear from Austique and simple jumpers from Comptoir des Cotonniers and Petit Bateau. I miss Arrogant Cat though. And it would probably be Charlotte Street for restaurants.
‘There’s an open-minded individualism to London style’ How would you define London style? I think it differs so much in each area that it’s difficult to pin one word on it. But there’s an open-minded individualism to London style which is wonderful. Anything goes if worn with flair and style.
34
REIS S.COM
Q& A Why do you think London is such an inspiring capital for fashion and design? Possibly because of the above. Where are your favourite weekend hangouts? Borough Market, Regent’s Park and Primrose Hill, though I think London feels more fun during the week.
THE BLUEBIRD SHOP
What is your favourite London eatery? Very hard to say! There are so many that I haven’t had a chance to try yet. I’m excited about Scott’s, Salt Yard and Wahaca. Old favourites include the Ebury, the life-shortening cassoulet at La Poule au Pot, the crispy Peking duck at Ken Lo’s Memories of China and the delectable afternoon buns at St John. Where do you head to when the sun goes down? Tell us your favourite night-time haunts.
A Bellini at the Library Bar in the Lanesborough is lovely. I also love Mark’s and Annabel’s. London is packed full of culture, of course. Where do you go to get some? The National Portrait Gallery and the Royal Academy are always beautiful to stroll around, as is the Tate. I’ve found I can only ‘do’ one room at a time at the National Gallery though – it’s almost too rich a diet to take in more at one visit. What do you think is the most surprising thing about London? That its beauty is undercut wonderfully by its lack of pretension. There’s a casual air to the city which somehow makes such glories as the Houses of Parliament and Westminster Abbey all the more heart-stopping. Lastly, can you share with us a favourite place in London – somewhere ‘undiscovered’ and off the beaten track? The hidden secret is Miss Lala’s Boudoir: a magic grotto selling beautiful, 1950s-style underwear. The two gorgeous blondes (mother and daughter) who own it make it a delightful experience every time you step in there. It used to be in Primrose Hill but has now moved to Covent Garden. You come out feeling like the world is sunny and joyous and polka-dotted.

Business and pleasure collide, suited gentlemen rub shoulders with fashionable young things and, it seems, there is no limit to the constant regeneration of interesting places and people. Large and established stores, like Liberty, vie for attention with small independents, like the Monocle shop, in this part of town. MY LONDOn JOE DEMPSIE ACTOR
When actor Joe Dempsie isn’t living in a medieval fantasy (a prerequisite of his role as Gendry in HBO’s ‘Game Of Thrones’) you can find him eating in South London or shopping on Lamb’s Conduit Street.

What is your London neighbourhood? And how long have you lived there? I live in Herne Hill, South London. I’ve only lived there for about 18 months – it’s the first and only place I’ve lived in London. Not many people are that familiar with Herne Hill, but it’s just round the corner from Brixton – best known as the hub of London’s West Indian community. How do you get around the city? It’s only when you travel elsewhere that you realise how good London’s public transport system really is. I drove all my stuff down when I made the move a while back, and my car hasn’t left the driveway since. Buses and the Tube are all you need. What is your favourite shopping street and why does it pull at your wallet? One thing I love about living in a city the size of London is that you can get pretty much anything you want if you know where to find it. Clothes-wise I like quite simple designs and block colours and Folk on Lamb’s Conduit Street fits that bill really well. There are some other similar brands there too, like Oliver Spencer, but I tend to have to do a bit of saving before heading down there – it’s a bit pricy! How would you define London style? I find that pretty much impossible to answer – but I think that’s probably the best thing about London. It is, in my opinion, the most diverse and tolerant city in the world – and I realised very early on that style-wise, anything goes. You’d have to be wearing something pretty bonkers for anyone to do a double-take. And the great thing is that London style is less about looking attractive than it is about being creative and interesting. It’s far less self-conscious than elsewhere. REIS S.COM
Q& A Are there any looks or styles you have noticed recently on the streets of London? As I said before, there’s so much going on in London that it’s sometimes hard to identify specific trends. Though the constant queues outside the Supreme store reflect the influence of Tyler the Creator and Odd Future on the hip-hop fashion scene recently.
Living in London, like any big city, can often be quite hectic. I don’t mind admitting that I should probably make more time to take in the breadth of culture available. We definitely have some of the best theatre in the world though, and it’s not all necessarily in the West End. The Royal Court in Sloane Square has been pretty exciting for a while now. What do you think is the most surprising thing about London? ‘One thing I love about living in a What first surprised me about London is city the size of London is that you how quickly you become attached to it and adapt to the pace of life here. What is your London neighbourhood? And how long have you lived there? I live in North West London. I don’t know how long I’ve lived here, but I do know it’s long enough for me not to remember. Do you have any local services/restaurants/stores etc that you rely on? Lemonia,a family-run Greek restaurant in Primrose Hill, is one of my favourite restaurants in London and conveniently located near me. The Lansdowne pub for chill time with the friends, Triyoga for all your yoga needs, Lost in Beauty, a 1950sstyle beauty parlour, which I probably spend way too much time in, and the top of Primrose Hill park for a view of the city. How do you get around the city? I love walking around, but when my feet (usually in heels) can’t take it any longer I jump on a bus or into a cab. What is your favourite shopping street and why does it pull at your wallet? Golborne Road, W10, for a few good reasons. I always love going to Kokon To Zai for unusual pieces of clothing, jewellery and things for the house. Jane Bourvis is a bridal shop, but I go there for the most beautiful vintage headpieces and lace dresses, and then there is Rellik which is always worth popping into. When I’m shopping on Golborne Road I normally have a (large) bite at Pizza East Portobello or at Anar Persian Kitchen. How would you define London style? Whatever humps your camel. Why do you think London is such an inspiring capital for fashion and design? London is the Toys R Us of cities. It feels like there’s a million things all under one roof. Are there any looks or styles you have noticed recently on the streets of London? REIS S.COM
Q& A Backpacks? Dip-dye hair is still going strong? Sorry, I’m rubbish at trends! Where are you favourite weekend hangouts? Other than my bed and/or couch, it would have to be somewhere that involves food. I like Allpress on Redchurch Street in East London for a strong coffee, Granger & Co on Westbourne Grove for lazy breakfasts and Crazy Homies around the corner is great for dinner/margaritas. I also love Sunday nights at the Everyman Cinema on Baker Street or smoking shisha and playing backgammon at Levant in Marylebone.
Royal Academy of Arts in W1 are all pretty much guaranteed to have a great exhibition on whenever you want to go. For some live music action I usually head to the Jazz Café or the Roundhouse in Camden or Ronnie Scott’s in Soho
“London is the Toys R Us of cities. It feels like there’s a million things all under one roof ” What do you think is the most surprising thing about London? How expensive it is. Lastly, can you share with us a favourite place in London – somewhere ‘undiscovered’ and off the beaten track? I did a photoshoot with Jade at the Last Tuesday Society in Hackney recently. It’s a taxidermy shop with the mantra ‘Those easily offended by death and decay should stay away’.
GRANGER & CO
What is your favourite London eatery? The falafel stand at Borough Market, SE1. Where do you head to when the sun goes down? Tell us your favourite night-time haunts. I do a 1990s R&B/hip-hop club night called Ooh La La at the Wyld bar in the W Hotel with my good friend Sunday Girl (Jade Williams) on the first Wednesday of every month, which is pretty fun. Other than that I like the Experimental Cocktail Club in Chinatown and Scotch of St James. London is packed full of culture, of course. Where do you go to get some?
