Artist Statement

For as long as I can remember I’ve been making art. I like to experiment with any media I can get my hands on, ranging from drawing to film to ceramics. Currently I’m focusing on working with oil paints and also exploring combining charcoal drawing with watercolors. I enjoy experimenting with different styles and subjects, though animals and nature are a frequent topic of focus. For me nature is very spiritual. Having spent the majority of my life surrounded by woods and farm animals, nature is the most abundantly seen evidence of God in day to day life. The complexity of a single flower could never have come by chance. I’m fascinated by patterns and textures, especially those found in nature, whether seen from a distant or from a microscopic view point. My intent is rarely to portray something in a photographic realism, but rather focus on portraying what is in memory after looking away from the subject. Or perhaps the information of a subject gleaned only from a few glances rather than constant careful study. Therefore the image created is based to my own perceptions. My primary focus in oil painting right now is centered around Biblical scriptures. The verses or chapters chosen for the focus of each painting center around themes prevalent within my personal spiritual journey. Themes include the Lords’ eternal presence, God’s glory through nature, and resisting temptation.
