BRIEF This international design ideas competition—the first in the CBDX series—asked, What does a city for all look like? How does it operate and function? How can it come into being? What place, structure, thing, system, process, or relationship must be forged to engender a more just and equitable ‘city for all’? And in particular—this is perhaps the most crucial question—the competition asked, How are these aims navigated by, through, and with the current uncertainty wrought by the ongoing global pandemic and the long-term existential threats of environmental degradation and climate change?

MAIN IDEA A city relies on the interlinked set of networks, strategically placed to allow better connectivity and communication. Based on this strategy the pattern was derived which opens up at several locations to promote various relations to flourish. The core concern of this proposal was to deal with the flooding problem in Calgary. The main purpose is to create the canal systems which will absorb the water like sponge, rather than blocking it.

Every block has their separate central plazas where people can gather for different activities and occasions. The pedestrians connect these urban zones with the other zones providing accessibility throughout the city. The farms are placed on a higher ground as apple orchards requires well drained soil. As this is on a sloped ground, it allows the flood water to get drained easily.

CONCEPT In this pandemic, we need a facade that guides us to stay safe by letting us know if we are defying the 2m physical distancing rule. This “touch me not” facade, activates as soon as one comes in its proximity and protrudes these spikes to keep us away and prevent us from touching it.

What if ‘facade’ is not just a ‘facade’.... ...and it reacts to the passer by


The band of spikes on the facade follows us and gives us a warning by changing the color if you invade someone else’s 2m band, thus keeping us all in check, and yet making us interact with each other and with the building. This facade will make us treat the building not as an element but as a living thing that will help us to realize the aftereffect of touching facades in this pandemic. The hustle-bustle around the BUNDLE, of people entering the building, the train station besides, the crossing at the intersection will create a dynamic and interesting mapping on the facade of people’s movement and crowding near the building letting us know the safe and danger zones.

The site is in between the residential area and future highly dense commercial area. The main concept is to create a flexible middle ground for both the residential and future commercial area users. A Flexible structure which can transform according to the needs of different types of users. There is an existing warehouse, where weekly market, artists workshops and work exhibition, fashion shows used to be held until last year. But due to lack of facilities and uninviting environment, this place is now only being used for storage.

This project focused on the flexibility of the structure, allowing it to cater different types of functions according to need. The columns are placed in a modular form, which makes is easier to move the flexible walls on the rails (showing in the section below).

FLEXIBLE SPACES

By arranging the flexible panels, the space can be divided into separated zones which will allow different activity.

Separated zones can have different internal arrangements to support the required use of the space.

When required the whole space can act as one big space and also multiple openings.

Motijheel Govt. Park is situated in the heart of commercial area of Dhaka. The main concept is to provide a breathing space for the corporate people and the locals. The seating spaces are mainly placed in the middle of the site, where the big trees are surrounding them. Big trees and bushed are placed so that they create a noise and visual barrier from the busy city. My role in this project was to create drawings, making physical models, materials for visual presentations and animation.

BRIEF LPG office is a small part in the whole master plan for LPG project. This office building facilitates meetings rooms, office rooms, cafeteria and internal open workstation for employees. The second floor is reserved for clients and potential buyers. My role in this project was to create architectural drawings, making physical models, materials for visual presentations and animation.

Masterbari. Gazipur is an industrial area where most of the people work in factories. Thus, Life skill training, skill development training, safety trainings, knowledge about employee rights are must for everyone. Still most of the rural people do not have a basic knowledge about these. Even many children are working in those factories with a minimum wage, not knowing their basic rights. This project’s aim was to enlighten these underprivileged people about their rights and to make them comfortable in taking NGO’s help.

An iconic building which can produce it’s own energy and represents the economic growth of Dhaka city.

The building has been faced South with two opening in the middle, to assemble enough wind pressures for the wind turbines.

The site is in Hatirjheel, which is one of the busiest point in Dhaka city. To support the growing city, many highrise buildings have been built in this area. Our studio project was to design an self sufficient high rise building which will not only be a landmark but also be an example of how high rise buildings can be sustainable and can have positive impact on the environment.

A narrow water stream is flowing through the site.

The rectangular mass portrays the characteristics of Pritilata, bold, loyal, and responsible; who fought for her country.

The existing water stream, which has cut through the mass represents the drastic change and sacrifices that Pritilata had to face .

Pritilata Waddedar (5 May 1911 – 23 September 1932) was an Indian Bengali revolutionary nationalist. After a brief stint as a school teacher, Pritilata joined a revolutionary group headed by Surya Sen. She led a team of fifteen revolutionaries. To avoid getting arrested, Pritilata consumed cyanide and died. An overhanging rectangular mass contained an uneven, rough, rock-like surface within it. A fault-line following the natural line of the ‘chara’ or water stream cut through the mass representing the bold revolutionary entity of Pritilata Waddedar. Dramatic sequential were achievedthrough thoughtful variations in internal sections.
