Preserving Craft through Architecture A Case of Sujani Quilt

As a quest to find familiarities in the surrounding built environment along with a deep interest in materiality, led to the thesis research focused on endangered textile quilt named – ‘Sujani’ from a small city in Gujarat, India named ‘Bharuch’.

A proposal for a ‘cultural walk‘ envisions a future for the city of Bharuch that would employ crafts as a way to connect with the city’s historic landscape in a unique way. It combines the heritage structures with the experience of the indigenous quilt suggesting awareness for the craft while opening the city to the lens of sentimentality as a form of nostalgia and also as means of production to preserve the craft. With the strong belief that Sujani can live in the memory of people as a part of collective consciousness through vision, touch and knowledge, the project takes into consideration 5-historically significant sites of the 16-existing ones along the heritage walk to make meaningful interventions for each of the five.

Re-design of SAIC’s Student Residency - Jones Hall - also Chicago’s historic landmark, was a great opportunity to experiment with architectural terracotta to form a new language for interior and exterior. The heart of the building being the central fire staicase constructed with optic fibres in concrete allows skylight from the top to penetrate and spread on all sides, lighting the core.

daylighting

Sunlight during the day penetrates through the roof and south wall giving ample natural light into spaces sround the atrium

Radiant slab

3/8 diameter tubing for hydronic radiant heating and cooling renders a energy efficient solution for winters as well as summer

PhotoVoltaic Panels

Solar Energy is used to generate electricity via PV panlling on the roof asa substitute for power distrbution

Plantation

Plants grown in new ceramic walls to insulate spaces both in summer and winter

New ceramic tile facade

The new 3d printed tiles for the proposed south wall facade are designed to insulate the spaces within in summer by incorporating plants, as well as winter by absorbing enough heat during the day time due to its black color.

Trombe wall effect

gap between glass curtain wall and black ceramic skin holding plants on the internal facade facilitates the removal of the sensible heat from interior of the spaces through thermal radiation thus generating a passive cooling effect.

Materials + Art + Crafts The following works are a fun exercises during my term at SAIC and otherwise that have played a major role in shaping my design sensibility and approach.

Do It Yourself Do It Yourself’ is a multi-purpose modular system for domestic use to hang ans shelf the many items in our daily lives. It is special due to the custom-made 3d-printed components for the freedom of a personalized configuration by every individual. Professor: Seth Keller

Crystal Deck On Hire A fun exercise to test light weight material and forms to design an object that could float on water. After several failed attempts with weights and forms this design of a crystal deck is a 3d-printed poly-propelene light weight plastic on objet-30 printer that could float very easily on water. It was later imagined as a deck for hire floating in the middle of Chicago river as a quiet wedding destination venue. Professor: Douglas Pancoast

Postcard Portfolio Postcard Portfolio, as the name suggests, is a box of postcards which sums my work as an Architect as well as my personal interest in making. These post cards are an honest expression of simple ideas expressed concisely through nine projects of my choice. Through the medium of postcards, I intend to stress on re-purposing this mode of personalized connections that has lost its value in today’s virtual world. Professor: Joseph Altshuler
