ABOUT pH
About pH Why is pH important? pH measures the acidity/alkalinity of a solution on a scale of 1 ~ 14 pH, with 1 being the most acidic and 14 being the most alkaline or basic. pH is a common measure of water quality used in environmental testing, food & beverages, cosmetics, pharmaceuticals and other fields. Three basic styles of pH meters are available for varying applications: Pens pH pens are easy to carry, simple to operate, inexpensive, and also provide digital resolution and accuracy not available with test strips. For most applications, a pH pen will fulfill the need for precise, reliable pH measurements. pH pens are available with higher or lower resolutions and accuracies, and are priced accordingly. All are waterproof and float if accidentally dropped into water. Portable Meters When seeking additional functions, such as datalogging and computer output, a portable pH meter’s larger case, keypad and display enable more complex menus, functions and outputs. Despite these sophisticated features, portable pH meters are still compact enough to be carried in the field. They accept a wide variety of replaceable electrodes, including probes reading mV and ORP (oxygen reduction potential). Benchtop Meters Benchtop pH meters are preferable for long-term lab tests. They offer larger display than portable meters, an adjustable electrode holder arm, and can be permanently connected to AC power and a computer.
Calibration All pH probes drift and should therefore be calibrated prior to any series of readings. Fortunately, calibration is a simple process that uses standard pH buffer solutions. The user simply brackets the point he expects to measure by calibrating to buffer solutions above and below that point. For example, if expecting a reading of about pH 6, one would first calibrate the meter by placing the probe in a buffer of pH 7, and then pH 4. Many meters offer automatic buffer recognition, which recognizes and calibrates to the buffer solution with the push of a button.
ATC (Automatic Temperature Compensation) pH is directly related to temperature, e.g. the pH reading of the same solution will vary (slightly) according to its temperature. This can be corrected manually or automatically. Manual correction requires the user to measure the temperature of the solution with a thermometer and enter the results into the pH meter. The meter then corrects the pH reading accordingly. Many pH meters and pH pens, however, feature automatic temperature compensation. The ATC pH probe contains its own temperature sensor and the meter automatically corrects for temperature without any input from the user.

H O T W I R E V S . VA N E A N E M O M E T E R S Anemometers measure air velocity. There are two basic types for different applications:
Thermoelectric ("Hot Wire") Anemometers
Heat a wire to a specified temperature and then measure the rate of cooling. This rate is proportional to air speed. Thermoelectric measurement provides fast response times and excellent sensitivity to very low air flows of <1 m/s but these probes are also the most delicate of the two types and are not suitable for environments which are dusty, humid, corrosive, or where there are rapid fluctuations in the ambient temperature, all of which effect the rate of cooling. These anemometers cover ranges of 0.01 m/s ~ 5 m/s. 20
S P E R S C I E N T I F I C 2 0 1 3 C ATA LO G
Vane Anemometers
Work on the principle that a freely turning turbine will rotate at a speed directly proportional to the wind speed. Vane Anemometers cover ranges as low as 0.15 m/s and as high as 40 m/s, or even higher by special order. Useful for a wide variety of applications including relatively harsh environments. Thresholds are not as low as with thermoelectric anemometers since the vane must overcome initial friction before it will turn.
Anemometer SD Card Logger Reads air velocity and temperature, and functions as a type K or J thermometer. Records data onto standard SD memory cards (like a digital camera). When full, simply exchange SD cards for unlimited data storage. The removable SD card is easy to transport and insert into a computer’s memory card slot or SD card reader. Uploads pre-formatted data to Excel, without the need for additional software and cables. Additional SD cards are readily available in a variety of memory sizes. Can also stream data directly to a computer using the optional software and cables. Each data set includes air speed, air temperature, time and date. Features min/max, auto power off, low battery indicator and hold function. This well-made unit is extremely accurate with fast response times, and includes a foldout tripod and large, easy-to-read backlit LCD. Comes ready to use in a soft carrying case complete with a detachable probe, 6 AA batteries, instruction manual and a 2GB SD card. dim: 7" × 2¾" × 2" (177 × 68 × 45 mm). weight: 1 lb (489 g). All models have a fast and accurate response, and are CE approved. The sensors are cosine and color corrected and hermetically sealed to ensure long term stability. All Sper Scientific light meters come ready to use with probes, 9V battery, carrying case, instructions, and a 5 -year warranty. Sper Scientific light meters have been checked and calibrated using N.I.S.T. traceable light sources and standards. The light source is a color correct bulb that burns at 2856 degrees Kelvin. The meters have a 5 -year warranty. They are used in many applications, from testing the reflectance of porcelain pigments in a QC lab to pharmaceutical degradation studies.
About Light Meters How Light Meters Work
Most meters consist of a body, a photo cell and a readout. The light that falls on the photo cell has energy. This energy is transferred by the photo cell into electric current. The amount of current generated depends on the amount of light striking the cell. The meter then reads the electrical current and calculates the appropriate value of either Lux or foot-candles. A key thing to remember about light is that it is usually made up of many different types (colors) of light at different wavelengths. The reading, therefore, is a result of the combined effects of all the wavelengths. A standard color can be referred to as color temperature, and is expressed in degrees Kelvin. The standard color temperature for calibration of most light meters is 2856 degrees Kelvin, which is more yellow than pure white. Different types of bulbs burn at different color temperatures. Sper Scientific meter readings will, therefore, vary with different light sources of the same intensity. This is why some lights seem “harsher than others. See the chart to the left for suggested lighting levels for various applications. Light Meter Units of Measure
Light can be quantified in many ways, i.e., Lux, Lumens, foot-candles, candle power, candelas, and so on. The two most popular scales are Lux, which is the European measure, and foot-candles, which is the U.S. scale. Lux is a unit of illumination of one square meter, which is one meter away from a uniform light source. 1 candela = 1 Lux. Foot candles are a unit of illumination of one square foot which is one foot, away from a uniform light source. Light Measurement Conversion Factors Abbreviations: FC=Foot-candle, Lux=Lux, Lumen=Lumen Since: 1 FC=1 Lumen/sq ft, and 1 Lux=1 Lumen/sq meter And: 1 square ft=0.0929 sq meter Then: 1 Lux=0.0929 FC, and 1 FC=10.76 Lux

About Sound Meters How Sound Meters Work Sound level meters measure sound pressure (waves) by taking sound in through a microphone and processing it with a filter. This filter gives a “weighting” to the frequencies which make up the sound. The “weighted” intensity of the sound is then expressed in decibels (dB) by the meter. The weightings normally found on sound meters are “A” and “C”. “A” weighting is the standard filter used by most regulatory agencies. See the chart to the left for the frequency weightings for the “A” and “C” filters on Sper Scientific sound meters.
Sound Meters Are Used By: Industrial Hygienists

Galileo Thermometers A fascinating way to measure temperature Based on Galileo Galilei’s (Italy 1564–1642) discovery that a liquid’s buoyancy decreases as its temperature increases. This unique device consists of a sealed glass cylinder containing multi colored floating spheres. The spheres have different weights which rise and fall at different temperatures. Current temperature is indicated by the tag attached to the lowest of the floating spheres. Used in science classes to demonstrate Galileo’s principle, or as an interesting and attractive way to accurately measure indoor ambient temperature anywhere. No.

TIME-IT Software
Make your computer the mother of all timers Using the power of your computer, TIME-IT produces timers that are larger, louder, clearer, and which offer more functions than any timer you’ve seen before. Begin with a single timer and get double digits many times larger and clearer than any normal timer’s LCD. Choose another timer, stopwatch or clock, and your screen automatically divides into 2 large displays. Continue to add timers, stopwatches or a clock, and time up to 8 different events simultaneously. View all 8 on screen at the same time, something not possible with any normal timer. TIME-IT has every function available on any timer or stopwatch, plus many additional functions and advantages not found on standard timers. Features include:
• Larger display • Displays multiple timers at maximum size • Audible and/or visual alarms • Unique visual display of time • Synchronous start • Datalogging • Statistical analysis • Simple user interface

Certification Program Purpose of the Program:
Complete Documentation:
There is an increasing requirement by customers for documentation supporting manufacturer's claims of accuracy on their scientific equipment. This is partially due to the increasing acceptance of quality standards, such as ISO 9000* and GMP**, which require that periodic certification of test equipment be performed and documented. We at Sper Scientific believe this trend is highly justified. To help, we have instituted this program of certification. Most testing is done in-house with our own state-of-the-art equipment. Whenever possible and practical, we use N.I.S.T. traceable equipment and N.I.S.T. procedures.
Each certified product comes with:
* ISO 9002 1987 (E) Section 4.10 ** FDA Good Manufacturing Practices Section 820.61
To Order: Simply add the suffix "C" to the regular catalog number. For example, Timer 810026 becomes 810026C in its certified version. Please note: Certifications are pre-pay only.
Delivery: The certification process may take up to two weeks, and products are promptly shipped once completed.

• A serial number • A calibration or certification label •O ne of three certificates. The type of certificate varies by product: "Certificate of Compliance" Specifies that the product has been tested and found to be within its stated tolerance for accuracy. "Certificate of Calibration" Similar to above, but for products which can be adjusted to the standard they are tested against. "Certificate Traceable to N.I.S.T." Specifies that the standards against which the product has been certified or calibrated were themselves calibrated by the National Institute of Standards and Technology (N.I.S.T.), or with N.I.S.T. calibrated equipment under conditions specified by N.I.S.T.
Green Policy Sper Scientific Green Policy:
Reduce Waste:
We are committed to maintaining and enhancing the integrity of the environment and the world we live in. Our goal is to achieve customer satisfaction while maintaining the trust of all of our stakeholders now and for generations to come.
Sper Scientific addresses waste reduction by consuming and throwing away less, by purchasing durable, long-lasting goods, and seeking products and packaging that are free of toxic and nonbiodegradable materials. Other ways we seek to reduce waste include:
Maintain Compliance: At Sper Scientific, we do our best to ensure that the products we carry conform to or exceed relevant standards such as: R estriction on Hazardous Substances Directive (RoHS)
CE
By doing so, we strive to minimize our impact on the Earth by eliminating toxic materials from our manufactured goods, and by using recyclable materials wherever possible.
Purchase Green: Like all companies, our purchasing decisions are influenced by costs. However, this is by no means the only factor we consider. At Sper Scientific, we make a conscious effort to ensure that we are purchasing from sustainable sources and choosing products that reduce the impact we have on the environment.
Packaging — Whenever possible, we reuse every carton that comes into our facility for shipping products to our customers. Electronic Communications — Unless our customers absolutely demand otherwise, we send all our quotes, invoices and other communications via email. This reduces paper waste as well as fuel emissions from delivery. Reduced Printing — It is company policy that any document that does not need to be printed be created in electronic format only. Paper Reuse — Paper that has already been printed on, but no longer holds value based on its content, is reused for fax and copy machines, and is also bound and used as office notebooks. Paper that contains confidential information, or that is printed on each side, is shredded and used as packing material.
