At Living Habitats, we are in the business of creating sustainable, ecologically balanced lifestyles. We build sustainable homes, apartments, villas, villaments and commercial spaces.

BUILDING THE SUSTAINABLE FUTURE. 03

Planting local flowers, planting life

Saying no to plastic

4-5

Going Beyond Plastic

BECAUSE PLASTIC IS JUST ONE PART OF THE BIGGER PROBLEM

This magazine has a plastic bubble wrap for a purpose. It highlights that to be truly sustainable, we need to go beyond just avoiding platics. To offset the negative impact of the plastic wrapper, this magazine itself is printed on recycled paper. To offset the use of plastic and other non-biodegradable materials, we plant fruit, vegetable and flowering trees. We also keep extending our afforestation program in the Western Ghats and other ecologically sensitive geographies with the aim of creating mini-forests.

04

Sustainable living aims at a carbon-neutral lifestyle, with an emphasis on recycling waste. And plastic is in the public eye as it is a clearly visible waste that even governments are concerned about. However, to see the true problems facing the earth, one needs to look beyond just plastic. That's what we do at Living Habitats.

The triple bottomline

Yoga and meditation for the employees

The Footprint Principle THE SHINING PHILOSOPHY THAT GUIDES US People - come first. Whether it is customers or construction workers, we demonstrate empathy, understand their needs and put ourselves in their shoes. This idea extends to all our stakeholders. We ensure that the construction teams building your homes are happy. We have savings plans, yoga and selfhelp classes for them, including health checkups and accommodation with recreational and sanitation facilities. Planet - we plant more trees and construct homes with the least impact on the environment for a netzero carbon footprint. We have fine-tuned contemporary construction methodologies to also include nonindustrial, minimally processed, locally available, and renewable materials and sometimes utilise recycled or salvaged materials. We lean on natural building techniques to incorporate sustainable design practices to best integrate our buildings into its environment. Prosperity - by combining eco processes, people-first mindset and a planet-friendly approach, we create abundance and win-win equations.

08

We invest in construction processes that preserve unique ecosystems, biodiversity and local landscapes while ensuring a better quality of life and health and safety of occupants and the workers who built their homes.

Using nature's bounties without disturbing the balance

A legacy of clean environment for the kids

Why Green? CARBON-NEUTRAL COMMUNITIES THAT WILL APPEAL TO GEN-NEXT Save money and resources The most tangible benefits are the reduction in water and energy consumption right from day one of occupancy. This is conservation of scarce national resources. The energy savings could range from 50 - 60% and water savings around 40 - 60%* from day one of occupancy. Reduced power and water bills result in huge savings resulting in higher resale and rental yields. Protect your health Health benefits include enhanced air quality, excellent daylighting, well-being of the occupants and safety benefits. Volatile Organic Compounds, also known as VoC’s are known carcinogens and are widely used in the construction industry. At eco-engineered sustainable homes, you will mitigate these hazardous health risks considerably. Appeal to the kids Your kids will realise the unique benefits of planting more greens, using natural resources and enjoying every moment of it. *IGBC Green Healthcare Facilities, Report October 2016

Industrial and traffic pollution is creating health hazards

Indians are increasingly getting affected by respiratory disorders

Air Pollution THE EARTH IS WOUNDED. TIME TO HEAL IT “It is up to us to teach kids how to live responsibly” Air quality is measured based on the number of small particles every cubic meter of air, specifically those smaller than 2.5 micrograms (PM2.5) or 10 micrograms (PM10). These particles are capable of entering the human blood-stream through lungs and increase the risk of heart attacks, strokes, and lung cancer. India tops the world in bad air quality. The Air Quality Index of most metro cities in India is in the range of 104-292 (Pm10)* which is considered unhealthy to hazardous. You need a home that is surrounded by an ocean of greenery and is constructed the green way. Which is why you need to embrace sustainability. Your children already suspect that all is not well with the world. And the problem is... humans. We know that the earth’s resources are finite, yet we exploit it recklessly. The air is fast becoming unbreathable. Global warming is now undeniable. Icecaps are steadily melting and weather patterns are getting increasingly distorted. *India tops world in bad air quality, Report TOI, May 2018

16

Presenting homes that give you the most vital ingredient: Fresh oxygen. Savor the pure air and live healthy.

Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge ensures water security

Water fixtures with aerators to optimise water usage

Combatting The Water Crisis RAINWATER HARVESTING AT LIVING HABITATS 54% of India faces high to extremely high water stress. There is a water crisis looming large. Across the nation, Government water supplies have started dwindling. Rivers are drying up. India’s groundwater depletion is a national crisis. More than half our wells show declining groundwater levels. Declining surface water availability is further prompting desperate and agitated urban and rural populations to increase groundwater extraction. As bore-wells go deeper than 1000 ~ 1500 feet +, the cost of access water has gone up manifold. By capturing rainwater and using it as a fresh water resource, by providing for groundwater recharge, and by using water efficient fixtures, Living Habitats estimates a reduction of 40 - 60% in annual fresh water demand. Abundant water. Greens all around you. And one with nature. Isn’t that true luxury? *The Diplomat From Evidence to Policy in India's Groundwater Crisis, Reports Asit K Biswas & Kris Hartley, July, 2017

18

Water Harvesting And Recharge Workshop Rainwater harvesting and groundwater recharge in Living Habitats projects are based on careful calculations of rainfall patterns, surface water run off, groundwater levels and other criteria. It is not lip service - this is a system that guarantees results.

19

Water recycling is of utmost importance

Natural phytorid water treatment ensures abundant water for cleaning, gardening, landscaping and irrigation

From Water Shortage To Water Abundance NATURAL PHYTORID SEWAGE TREATMENT

Grey water - from your kitchen, shower and bathroom sinks – is also recycled. And this process consumes no power; it relies on the advanced (and natural) Phytorid water treatment system. This reclaimed water is used again in flower beds and kitchen gardens. Phytorid wastewater treatment technology is an extremely flexible and natural way to treat wastewater. The process consumes no power or additives or chemicals. The reclaimed water can be used again in flower beds or kitchen gardens or for other non potable purposes, thus ensuring an endless supply of water. The system has zero running cost as it is entirely electro-mechanical, requires no additives, no daily effort and has minimal annual maintenance.

20

Black water - treated domestic blackwater is exclusively used for landscaping and groundwater recharge.

21

Eco homes can slow down global warming

The mission is to reduce carbon emissions

Global Warming SET AN EXAMPLE BY COMMITMENT

The earth has become warmer over the last 4 decades*. Global warming is a slow steady rise in Earth's surface temperature. It is caused by a rise in atmospheric carbon dioxide concentration. When people use fossil fuels like coal and oil, this adds carbon dioxide to the air. When people cut down trees (deforestation), less carbon dioxide is taken out of the atmosphere by those plants. The solution to that is building eco-homes and that is what we do at Living Habitats. If you believe that the Earth needs saving, then your children need to learn the alternative paths that lead to sustainable living. Hasty and unplanned development has plagued Indian cities for generations. This needs to stop. And the new starting point is sustainable communities – where both resources and waste are managed to ensure a zero-carbon footprint. *Global Climate Change: Causes - Facts, Report NASA

22

STOP

GLOBAL WARMING

Our focus is to build luxurious yet sustainable residential development. It’s upscale and ecologically balanced. This is truly an investment for the future and a critical part of your children’s eco - education.

Segregating bio-degradable waste and converting it into nutrients for gardening and landscaping

Converting dry waste into construction material and responsibly disposing of e-waste

34-35

Waste Management

TUTORING IN A NON-CHEMICAL BASED, NATURAL APPROACH

India generates 62 million* tonnes of waste every year, of which less than 60% is collected and around 15% processed. Landfills rank third in terms of greenhouse gas emissions in India. We need a waste management strategy. At Living Habitats, all wet bio-degradable waste is converted into manure by anaerobic digesters and this helps grow fruits, flowers and vegetables. No chemical-based fertiliser will be used in our project. In the case of dry waste, plastic, glass and cardboard will be separated for recycling, and there will be provision for the ethical disposal of medical and e-waste through partner companies. In addition, dry waste will soon be converted into construction material through a special plant that Living Habitats is building – a first for India! *How can India's waste problem see a systemic change? Report EPW, Mathangi Swaminathan, Vol. 53, Issue No.16, Apr, 2018

24

With advanced waste management processes, you will be part of a community that will be the benchmark for future green buildings. You will be the pioneering innovator.

25

Adding vertical gardens and allowing buildings to breathe easy

Living Habitats vision of a greener planet

Reduced Green Cover GREENING THE CITIES - THROUGH HOME FARMING

Reusing treated water for flushing, landscaping, maintenance of common areas and other non-potable usage plus ensuring groundwater recharge will deliver a significant overall reduction in fresh water demand. India ranks one of the highest among large countries in terms of reduction in tree cover extent. We have lost in excess of 14,000 sq km* of forest cover over the last 30 years. Home farming We use recycled water for farming. Through vermicomposting, we create natural nutrient-rich fertilizers by composting the organic waste we generate. *India State of Forest Report, 2017

26

We help create vertical gardens, terrace gardens, kitchen gardens, square foot gardens. So that, through home farming, you can grow your own vegetables, fruits and herbs.

27

Traditional athangudi tiles

Being careful about our finite resources

Construction Waste GREEN CONSTRUCTION SYLLABUS The construction sector contributes to 23% of air pollution, 50% of climatic change, 40% of drinking water pollution, and 50% of landfill wastes. Energy utilization during extraction, production and transport of material is high. Construction material coming from far-off places is adding to the carbon miles. Construction costs are rising exponentially. This requires a dramatic action plan. The construction business and its related industries not only devour finite resources, but they are a major source of pollution. Quarrying and stone cutting onsite causes dust to hang in the air and it literally chokes people. At Living Habitats, we do not compromise on luxury, but we strictly adhere to green construction practices to offset adverse environmental impact. Instead of unsustainable materials that are non-renewable resources and have very energy intensive manufacturing processes, your children will learn to appreciate classic FS-certified wooden flooring or the locally sourced traditional Athangudi tiles. You will, too. Source: http://gosmartbricks.com/waste-management-how-recycling-construction-materials-are-benefitting-the-environment/

28

As far as possible, all construction material is sourced locally, saving on transport (that generates greenhouse gases) and supporting regional livelihoods.

29

We plan green projects

We supervise and implement green at every stage

Environment Unfriendly Cannot Be A Luxury GREEN BUILDINGS THAT HAVE ECO-CONSCIENCE IN THEIR DNA

Today's construction sometimes borders on wasteful opulence. At Living Habitats, we have innovated at every step, to make our materials and processes earth-friendly. Features include athangudi tiles, fly-ash bricks made from landfill waste, zero VoC elements in plastering and painting, local terracotta tiles or IPS, environmentally sustainable bamboo flooring or equivalent, IFC certified laminate and engineered wood, rainwater harvesting and recharge units, black and grey water recycling systems, efficient solar panels, solar water heaters and solar lanterns, large skylights, waste segregation and composting, effective disposal and recycling of non-biodegradable waste, responsible e-waste management, organic gardens putting fresh fruits, vegetable and herbs on the table. In short, completely Off the grid!

30

You will be proud to be part of a truly green community that practises what it preaches. A community that will be the benchmark. And you the pioneer. The best gift you can give your kids and they will love you for it!

31

Green concepts are integrated at the design stage itself

Our mantra is innovation and imagination

Energy Crisis A STUDY IN SUSTAINABLE DESIGN Living Habitats creates projects on the principles of sustainable design, which maximize resource efficiency and aim at creating carbon-neutral communities. Form follows function with minimalistic elegance, resulting in light and airy living areas. For example, daylight patterns are analyzed – from dawn to dusk – so that your residence gets maximum natural light. How does Living Habitats optimise energy? • Incorporating a building envelope design (the structural barrier between the interior and exterior of a building, responsible for maintaining climate control, moisture, sounds and light within your home) • Standing systems to reduce cooling energy consumption • Selecting thermal efficient construction materials and reflective paints • Implementing energy efficient systems in the project like VF pumps, gearless elevators and energy efficient lighting tied to solar resource Energy savings ensure your monthly maintenance bills drops significantly from Day One.

32

What gets measured gets done. That is the philosophy behind creating an app: Living Habitats MobileApp tracks, monitors and measures your power, water and energy consumption. And gives you the weighted average scores vis-Ă -vis the community averages. Thus, giving you a clear indication of your green status.

33

Providing resources and the right settings to guide kids of construction workers towards a better life

Construction workers are trained in yoga and mediation in addition to financial literacy

Migrant Workers A HELPING HAND TO THOSE WHO BUILD OUR HOMES PROMOTING INCLUSIVENESS Your children can start with learning not just the ‘how’ and ‘what’...but also the ‘who’. Who actually builds luxurious and eco-friendly residences like the projects of Living Habitats: Construction workers. This is India’s largest migrant population -- labourers who work and live on construction sites, often with their families. Their life is usually a miserable one. They are voiceless, frequently exploited and lack opportunity in every sphere. At Living Habitats, we give workers an additional sum everyday as the employer's contribution that turns into significant extra savings for each worker. Sustainable development must have a social aspect to it and Living Habitats follows this thinking. We ensure construction staff has proper safety equipment. We do more to help with housing, sanitation, healthcare facilities and even education for their children.

34

Happy workers = Great karmic buildings. It’s a simple equation. In fact, future residents of our projects are encouraged to contribute some of their time and skills towards the education and vocational guidance of workers and their children. A great opportunity to give back to society.

35

Empowering communities thru renewables

Solar geysers

Energy Efficiency Optimization - Off The Grid RENEWABLE ENERGY ENLIGHTENMENT

Living Habitats projects will be largely sharing energy bills with the sun. Your kids will learn that the sun can power not just your house, but all public areas as well, including the swimming pool filtration system and the lifts. Drastically reducing your maintenance costs from day one. Net metering (also known as net energy metering) is a solar incentive that allows you to store energy in the electric grid. When your solar panels produce excess power, that energy is sent to the grid and in exchange you can pull from the grid when your system is under-producing like during nighttime. Hot water is available 24x7, on demand, even at night. With net-metering, any shortfall in power, however unlikely, is made up by access to the conventional electricity grid and then there is additional backup with diesel gen-sets, just in case.

36

Using the Living Habitats MobileApp, residents can monitor consumption, get energy saving tips and more. An independent solar processing system is tied to the grid for powering homes and leveraging revenue from the additional units of electricity generated.

37

Luxurious living without disturbing the eco-balance

Lavish homes without draining the earth

Green Nirvana THE CASE FOR CONSCIENTIOUS LUXURY

Sustainability does not mean that you and your family are expected to live like monks; far from it. The Living Habitats’ projects are frugal with resources, but lavish in lifestyle. It can be called ‘conscientious luxury’, a responsible way of living well in harmony with the planet.

38

It does not mean giving up much. Conscientious luxury is a change in mindset - material comfort is achieved through the right choice of material.

39

Surpassing the Indian Green Building Council's platinum certification standards

Furthering the green legacy ofour previous projects

Creating Green Benchmarks EXCEEDING GREEN BUILDING STANDARDS

The Indian Green Buildings Council’s Platinum rating is extraordinarily high, even by international standards. All Living Habitats’ projects not only aim to meet this benchmark, but exceed it by far, by developing the rarest of the rare carbon neutral or carbon negative buildings, rare landmarks across the world. Living Habitats' first project Mittal Auriga in Bangalore did just that!

40

For residents of Living Habitats eco-homes, this is a sterling opportunity to embrace a luxurious yet sustainable lifestyle. Not only would you have the true luxury of lavish homes and abundant natural resources, but also higher rental incomes and better resale values.

41

Your home – your payback to the earth

Your home – a green legacy for your kids

Sustainable Design YOUR LEGACY: A SUSTAINABLE HOME

Why should you buy into Living Habitats' projects? Because you know the ecological mess the world is in and this is a step towards repairing it. Because Living Habitats is the new generation when it comes to concerned eco-engineering. Sustainable design is the key and residential communities of the future must aim for a zero carbon footprint.

42

Because this is your legacy to your children. This is where they will learn practical lessons about living in ecological harmony. And they, in turn, will take the ethos of sustainability forward, until the Earth is healed.
