PRESIDENT’S REPORT In writing this report to industry colleagues, I have reflected on all that has happened in my first year as President of ACCA. During this time, ACCA Education received an increased level of interest from cemeteries and crematoria around participating in online training workshops. Topics such as Vicarious Trauma, Managing Challenging Behaviours, Professional Boundaries, and Supporting Grieving Clients were all taken up by ACCA members and industry colleagues. It has been pleasing to see many of our allied industry stakeholders participating in this training along with ACCA Members and shows a level of collaboration that will be of great benefit to all. In my last report, I advised that we had engaged an external consultant to commence a review of the ACCA Strategic plan. Interviews with ACCA Members and other industry stakeholders informed the ACCA Board and Executive of some of the key things that they believe are important for ACCA to focus on. We have already embraced this information and have initiated changes to our Annual Conference format by including break-out sessions and interactive panel discussions to allow for greater participation from conference delegates and increased learning opportunities. Our ACCA Annual Conference was held in Melbourne in late October, with attendance at a record number. There was a fantastic line-up of speakers with over 20 trade exhibitors who showcased their latest innovations, products, and services. We greatly thank our conference sponsors for enabling us to host over 200 in-person delegates along with SMCT and Arrow Bronze would kindly host our delegates on tours of their facilities.
The conference was an excellent way to connect with our industry colleagues, to share problems and solutions, and to keep the fabric of our industry strong. On October 24, we held the 2023 Annual General Meeting, where we welcomed three new Board Members, Robert Moore (Fraser Coast Regional Council - QLD), Michael Robertson (Adelaide Cemeteries Authority – SA) and Dean Matthews (Geelong Cemeteries Trust - VIC). It is great to have Rob, Michael, and Dean on the Board, and it is also fantastic to have representation from different types of operators who can contribute to the Board discussions and dynamics. The end of October also saw us farewell Chris Harrington, who served as the Chief Executive Officer of our association for the past eleven years. Chris’s dedication and tireless commitment have contributed greatly to the success we have enjoyed over the years. We welcomed Ben Kelly as the new CEO in early November. Ben brings a wealth of industry experience, enthusiasm, and passion to our Association, and we are confident that under Ben’s guidance, ACCA will continue to grow, innovate, and make a positive impact on our industry and membership. On behalf of the Board and ACCA team, I’d like to take this opportunity to wish you and your families a very Merry Christmas and a safe and Happy New Year. Yours Sincerely
Lauren Hardgrove ACCA President

MEMBER PROFILE Kerena McDonald What is your full name, title, company name? Kerena McDonald, Coordinator Cemetery Services, Toowoomba Regional Council.
How long have you worked in the cemeteries/ crematoria industry and what do you like most about your role? After working as a palliative care nurse for 8 years gave me an insight into the funeral industry. I made the move to Toowoomba Regional Council in November 2021. My nursing experience gave me an interest in what happens after the funeral director collects the deceased patient from my care. The move into this role was an exciting new challenge that I was pleased to take on. The position of coordinator certainly captivated me and has given me a clear vision for the future. The most rewarding part of my role to date is helping the community understand Cemetery Services role within the Toowoomba Region and to serve community to the highest standard attainable.
Who or what has influenced you most professionally? Throughout my professional career I have been influenced by many amazing people. My first nursing shift was a night shift and two hours in we had a patient pass way. My nurse unit manager took the time to talk with me about caring for the patient which does not stop once the patient had passed. She took the time to explain how to prepare the room for the family and how to prepare the patient to be viewed by the family so they can say their goodbyes before the patient was taken away by the funeral director. This lesson of compassion and humility has stayed with since that first shift.
What are some notable/unique differences in this role compared to your previous role? The largest change for me is that there was a finite amount of time spent with patients and making them as comfortable as possible during their final days. To caring for them perpetually and ensuring their final resting place is cared for and maintained in a respectful manner.
What are some things that are on your ‘bucket list’? I don’t really have a bucket list as such. I tend to see things I would like to do and make it happen.
What do you love to do away from work when you have time? I enjoy spending time with family and friends, keeping active roller skating, playing rugby league and hiking.
What is a favourite memory of yours? Family Christmas Eve every year is a memory I hold very close to my heart. My family are quite competitive and like to play games together. There have been a few injuries/broken bones over the years as some of us have gotten carried away, but the family coming together and taking the time for each other is something I feel truly lucky to have in my life.
Finish this sentence - ‘Nobody likes a …’ Monday, but you simply like a Tuesday because it is the furthest from the next Monday you can possibly be.

GEELONG’S NEW BLUE TREE CONTINUES IMPORTANT CONVERSATIONS The new sculpture at Geelong Memorial Park is a talking point for mental health Geelong Cemeteries Trust has officially opened the Blue Tree. The opening was held in the grounds of Geelong Memorial Park on Tuesday 10 October 2023 at 2.00pm. The sculptural tree, part of the Blue Tree Project, is a mental health awareness initiative which aims to spark difficult conversations and encourage people to speak up when battling mental health concerns. The opening also marked National Paint a Blue Tree Day and World Mental Health Day. A number of Councillors and Representatives of Parliament attended in support of recognising the importance of mental health within our region. Statistically, Greater Geelong has a higher percentage rate of mental health conditions (11.1%) than the statewide and national average (8.8%). Kim Edgar, a local mother and mental health and suicide prevention advocate spoke at the event, poignantly talking about the significance of the Blue Tree Project. Kim lost her son to suicide in 2018; the same year Jayden Whyte, who inspired the Blue Tree Project, took his own life. Chair of Geelong Cemeteries Trust, John Mitchell says, “To have a tangible reminder of the significance of having those difficult conversations, seeking help and supporting others with their mental health is very powerful.” A Blue Tree, which is typically dead before being painted by the community, has in this instance been locally made and installed as an enduring symbol. “This is about bringing people together and caring for our community. The Blue Tree is a beacon of hope.” Geelong Cemeteries Trust warmly welcomes all within our communities to visit the Blue Tree. 5 TRENDS IN THE DEATHCARE INDUSTRY: THE ROAD AHEAD Deathcare navigates a dynamic landscape of trends shaped by evolving needs, preferences and values. Discover how you can keep one step ahead. As with every industry, deathcare is navigating a dynamic landscape that’s shaped by evolving tech trends as well as consumer needs, preferences and values. To ensure future growth and longevity, it’s important that deathcare service providers identify and understand these trends and take proactive steps to address them. With that in mind, let’s look at 5 trends within deathcare services - both from the perspective of the consumer and the provider - what their impact has been and practical actions that can be taken to help build the road ahead for your cemetery, crematorium or funeral home.
Green, Natural and Sustainable Burial As environmental consciousness grows and views on death and personalisation evolve, more of us are opting for green and natural burials - and along with this, a growing number of natural burial sites and, ‘alternative’, sustainable burial options. From natural burials, to ‘alternative’ methods of disposal such as NOR (Natural Organic Reduction) or aquamation (aka alkaline hydrolysis), while this ‘shock of the new’ may take some years to fully bed in to the wider culture, they do suggest a road towards greater choice than ever before, as well as a sea change towards sustainability and reducing the environmental impact of end-of-life services. The impact of all of this has been that for many, traditional burial or cremation options are not the only conversations that families are now expecting to have, and for many providers, that means a need to integrate sustainable practices into their service offerings and operations. That may also mean the sourcing of
12 | ACCA News | SUMMER EDITION 2023
eco-friendly products, collaborating with green providers, or considering alternative burial options as a natural evolution of traditional practices, all while promoting environmentally responsible options.
What deathcare providers can do: • Explore partnerships with green providers and suppliers of biodegradable products. • Educate yourself and your staff on sustainable practices • Educate consumers on sustainable burials, and promote its benefits in a responsible manner, avoiding ‘greenwashing’ • Consider offering carbon footprint assessments to highlight the environmental benefits of certain choices • Consider the viability of other sustainable burial methods within your current site/portfolio or the creation of a ‘combination-cemetery’
Direct Cremation Direct cremation - a more cost-effective alternative to traditional burial funeral services, is on the rise. As the pandemic unfolded, direct cremation became a practical and safer choice for many families dealing with loss, and as we move forward, has undoubtedly brought about a shift in how many approach end-oflife arrangements, further fueling its rise. The impacts have been numerous, with a recognition of families understanding funeral costs upfront, the customisation of memorialisation options, the introduction of online or virtual services, and flexibility in service packages. This shift may necessitate a change in perspective or attitude towards direct cremations and a greater awareness of the balance between empathetic care and personal choice, with providers considering direct cremation offerings as part of their
services to meet the demand for more alternative and more affordable options.
What deathcare providers can do: • Consider direct cremation as an additional service offering • Provide more customisable memorialisation options • Embrace digital solutions that facilitate contract creation for multiple interment methods • Offer flexibility on service packages • Educate families on options - recognising that direct cremation might be a relatively new, or even challenging concept for many
Pre-Need Planning Pre-need planning isn’t a new concept, but we’re seeing first-hand a growing interest within areas outside of the US. But why is this trend gaining traction? To answer that, we might explore what motivates consumers to choose it. As we become more cost-conscious, people may be actively seeking ways to alleviate the financial burden their funerals might impose on themselves or their loved ones, ways that provide added protection and the added incentive of locking in current prices for funeral services - as well as the ability to spread the cost over months or even years. We might also look to factors such as changing attitudes towards personalisation and control, with modern consumers valuing individuality and customisation of funeral arrangements - something that pre-need planning can facilitate [while not necessarily exclusively] - from choosing specific caskets or urns, to designing unique memorial services that reflect their personality and preferences. We may also look at the importance of reducing the emotional burden of families - alleviating the emotional
AUSTRALASIAN CEMETERIES & CREMATORIA ASSOCIATION
stress by providing a clear roadmap of the deceased’s wishes - something that became all too apparent as we navigated the challenges of the pandemic. The rise in pre-need planning brings several significant impacts on deathcare providers - this may for example, include a shift in revenue streams, requiring careful financial management and forecasting; evolving service offerings, including the provision pre-arrangement consultations; greater transparency in service pricing models, and technological integrations, to name just a few.
What deathcare providers can do: • Invest in ongoing education and training for staff to ensure they’re well-equipped to guide clients through the pre-need planning process • Expand and diversify service offerings to encompass a range of pre-need planning options • Educate consumers on the benefits of pre-need planning • Implement integrated digital systems that facilitate the processing of pre-need payment plans and contracts
Genealogy As with pre-need, genealogy isn’t new, but it has been on the rise for some time, and with the proliferation of online genealogy platforms and databases it is now easier than ever for individuals to access historical records - and for deathcare providers to maximise the many opportunities it presents. And increasingly, we’ve seen many within the industry seeking to implement integrated digital mapping and grave search functionality as part of their broader digital transformation strategies for this very reason. This trend has had a profound impact on deathcare services - the reshaping of how individuals and families can find and engage with the memories of departed loved ones has meant service providers becoming more proactive in finding solutions that will meet this need. Not only this, but the rise in cemetery tourism has also been supported in many ways by the digital technologies that
connect communities with the historical data held by cemeteries and crematoriums, as enthusiasts use this resource to visit the gravesites of their ancestors, or notable local luminaries.
What deathcare providers can do: • Consider grave search functionality and digital technologies as a key part of their broader transformation strategy • Seize the opportunity to enhance visitor experiences through provision of historical information • Collaborate with genealogy experts and local community groups - building relationships to create mutually beneficial opportunities • Enhance their online presence to engage with families and the wider genealogy community.
Digital Memorialisation Increasing adoption of digital technologies - and it might be said, lessons from COVID’s social distancing measures - presents further learnings, as well as opportunities, as families seek personalisation in memorialisation that celebrates the life of their loved ones. One noteworthy trend is one that has emphasised innovation in memorialisation, encompassing a range of innovative new options, including virtual memorials, interactive digital tributes, and the use of QR codes to access multimedia content. A growing preference for innovative memorialisation options has a number of potential impacts: families now have the opportunity to craft highly personalised memorials that go beyond traditional obituaries and gravestones; they can now break down geographical barriers, with family members across far distances participating in virtual memorials or access digital tributes; and the ability to preserve memories via multimedia content in perpetuity.
service offerings • Consider placement of QR codes or interactive screens on cemetery or crematorium grounds, taking consumers straight to your digital offerings • Integrate the implementation of digital memorialisation into your 5-year business plan / marketing strategy
The Road Ahead So what does the road ahead look like for deathcare providers in order to stay ahead of emerging trends? It means; Investment in digital transformation - prioritising digitalisation, to public genealogy portals, to considering the value of virtual memorialisation platforms. A diversification of service offerings expanded services to include pre-need planning, direct cremation, green burials, and alternative methods of interment or inurnment to cater for diverse preferences. Ongoing staff training and professional development to be aware of new and emerging trends within the industry in order to enhance the customer experience Embrace - or investigate - eco-friendly practices to determine if they are a viable option to help sustain long-term growth. Educate and remain transparent - providing clear information on pricing and service offerings, as well as educational resources that help families make informed decisions. Consider collaborations with other deathcare professionals that will allow you to expand your offerings and expertise. The deathcare industry continues to be driven by shifting trends and consumer preferences. Providers who adapt to these trends, embrace innovation, and remain sensitive to the diverse needs of their families are in the best position to ensure future success.
What deathcare providers can do: • Stay updated on emerging technologies and interactive digital experiences - they won’t always be right for you, but stay informed
For more, visit: https://www.plotbox.io/en-au/
• Consider developing and offering digital memorial packages as part of your

We couldn’t have done it without the support of our sponsors and exhibitors and we’re already looking forward to making next year’s event even bigger and better. As many of you are aware, Phoenix Foundry alongside ACCA and the OACFP (Ontario Association of Cemetery and Funeral Professionals) opened nominations earlier in the year for the Phoenix Foundry Bereavement Profession Excellence Award. Joe Campbell from
Phoenix Foundry and ACCA President Lauren Hardgrove proudly announced that David Welton from Townsville City Council was the winner of this years competition. We wish David all the best as he undertakes his all-expenses paid trip to Canada and we would like to thank Joe Campbell and all the team at Phoenix Foundry for allowing such opportunity to take place. Thank you to all who nominated, and we encourage you to keep your eyes peeled for next years competition and submit your nomination form! We wanted to promote the importance of not only providing a great dinner and atmosphere but also creating opportunities for attendees to connect with each other. By mixing and matching attendees at tables, we encouraged networking and the formation of developing valuable connections within the industry. We wanted the night to be fun and engaging, and the “Bright & Colourful” theme for the official conference dinner was no exception. It was a wonderful way to showcase everyone’s unique personality and style, and we were thrilled to see the bold and creative outfits that our delegates brought to the event. A massive thank you to our platinum sponsor Arrow Bronze for sponsoring

Emma McGregor from Arrow Bronze announced that they would be donating on behalf of each delegate to three selected charities and delegates were advised to place a voucher in jar of their choosing which represented the three individual charities. Arrow Bronze donated $2075.00 to MND Australia, $1850.00 to the National Breast Cancer Foundation and $1565.00 to Ronald McDonald House Charities. MIDLAND CEMETERY - MARKING 120 YEARS OF SERVICE WITH A FRESH NEW STATEMENT
To mark 120 years of service to the Perth community for burial, memorial and entombment services, the Metropolitan Cemeteries Board (MCB) unveiled a new entry statement at Midland Cemetery. Midland Cemetery is located 32 kilometers north-east of Perth city and occupies 23.7 hectares of land that reflects many traditions and cultures. Midland Cemetery was established in December 1903 and was initially managed by the Midland Council and then consumed into the Shire of Swan, prior to being vested to the MCB in June 1989. Midland Cemetery has been caretaker to over 8,100 burials, 1,300 memorials and 35 entombments since establishment. In 2023 the cemetery continues to provide burial, memorial and entombment services to the eastern corridor of metropolitan Perth. The new entrance was designed by award winning Ecoscape Environmental Consultants and Landscape Architects to reflect the natural bushland environment, showcasing the retained jarrah and paperbark trees. The design reflects the natural environment of the cemetery to produce an understated contemporary feature which incorporates locally sourced moss rock to fill the gabion wall and pillars.
26 | ACCA News | SUMMER EDITION 2023
Supporting the MCB’s commitment to protect Bush Forever land and retain remnant vegetation where possible, the design also formalised vehicle access and additional entrance parking, and delivered improved pedestrian movement for visitors in what is a highfoot traffic area during large funerals. After 120 years of service, Midland Cemetery proudly continues to offer burial, memorial and entombment options to the Perth community, and it’s never looked better doing so.

CHAMPIONS OF QUEENSLAND CEMCREM Connecting Locally at Interstate National Conference. Changing of the Guard across several Queensland Cemcrem entities over the last year, particularly local government, has sparked an exciting re-combination of established industry experience, knowledge & commitment with an injection of new skills, perspective, adaptation, and innovation – amplified by shared ACCA education & engagement. Growing out of Southeast Queensland, initially as a low-key local government cemetery network targeting monument safety – a regular catch-up sharing common challenges, discussing concerns, comparing management practices, and collaborating on regionally harmonised policy & solutions, has seen this group now attracting interested participants from across the state to its online meetings. Recognising that weaknesses for mischief, misunderstanding or misadventure still exist in some administrative & compliance areas due to shortfalls in regulation, resourcing, clarity, or consistency - this motivated cohort has been working toward closing identified loopholes, improving stakeholder compliance & education, and together tightening policy, documentation & assessment criteria. While particular focus has been on promoting greater understanding of risks, liabilities, and strategies of cemetery operators in the areas of monument design & safety, industry knowledge (understanding the implications & obligations of Australian Standards & Codes of Practice) and managing the compliance of external parties (including client families & stonemasons) – discussion freely branches into all areas of CemCrem operation and administration.
While sharing tried & tested, hardwon industry awareness with relative newcomers, the group also celebrates the fresh insight & scrutiny into sometimes assumed knowledge and established practices in need of renewal. Improving outcomes and sharing initiatives in both directions across Qld and interstate, the consensus is to work in concert with, rather than parallel to ACCA leveraging its industry reach and capacity to promote productive discussion, tap into local knowledge on a national scale and drive change through operational & strategic education.
The Queensland contingent (see photo) was well represented at the recent ACCA Annual Conference & Trade Exhibition in Melbourne, well seized the opportunity to strengthen networks with industry peers, suppliers & stakeholders face to face, and is already building on that buzz to encourage wider Queensland peer participation.

AFDA REPORT Australian Funeral Directors Association
In what has been a busy year of travel it has been a privilege to act on behalf of AFDA and represent our Association at the various events that I have attended since being elected as AFDA National President. Following the AFDA Divisional Annual General Meetings in each State, I travelled to Las Vegas USA to attend the NFDA Convention & Expo along with CEO Dale Gilson and the 2023 AFDA Scholarship winner Taryn Hunt, which provided a remarkable opportunity to connect with peers from around the world. At the AFDA stand, we showcased the exceptional expertise that AFDA Members offer to our communities engaging with funeral professionals, suppliers, and international association representatives. These connections are of utmost importance, facilitating collaboration in areas like repatriation, professional development, cultural understanding, and product and service insights on a global scale. As we serve diverse communities in Australia, we must stay ahead of the curve and remain aware of new offerings from around the world. On my return from Las Vegas, I joined attendees at the ACCA Annual Conference which had an excellent line-up of speakers and provided a chance to connect with industry colleagues. Well done to President Lauren Hardgrove, outgoing CEO Chris Harrington and the ACCA team on a successful conference and a warm welcome to new CEO Ben Kelly. Since my last report AFDA has taken a pioneering step by launching the online Funeral Learning Hub. A first for the Australian funeral sector, the Funeral Learning Hub is an online learning platform, exclusive to AFDA Members

that offers a suite of courses that have been tailored to the Australian funeral industry from onboarding new staff to the importance of mortuary care, human resources, and organisational excellence. The online learning platform delivery allows courses to be accessed anywhere at any time. This flexibility means AFDA Members, and their staff can easily participate in training and education. During my travels it has always been a pleasure to be in the company of funeral care leaders in Australia, witnessing the passion, commitment and hearing the touching stories of the families we serve, reaffirming my unwavering belief in our shared profession. It has also been a tremendous opportunity to learn and hear of the experiences and challenges in our industry. One thing of note is the number of AFDA Members that have joined our Divisional Councils in 2023. Seeing such engagement and willingness to contribute is really pleasing and I thank all Councillors for volunteering their time. Thank you also to our National Corporate Partners and Divisional Sponsors for their support once again this year. As we approach the end of the year, we are busy planning for the 2024 AFDA National Convention and I would like to extend an invitation to all ACCA members to attend the 2024 Convention which will be held at the Hilton Hotel in Adelaide from 22-24 March in conjunction with the AIE Conference from 21-23 March 2024. This collaboration allows us to share education and keynote sessions, as we work closely together for the benefit of our families. It’s a unique opportunity to learn from each other and tap into the expertise of Australia’s leading funeral professionals and embalmers. We hope many ACCA members will be able to join us for this unique event in Adelaide next year.
In closing on behalf of the AFDA Board, CEO Dale Gilson and the National Office team we would like to wish all ACCA members a safe and happy holiday season and best wishes for the New Year. Regards
Kelly Scott National President

GRAVE SAFETY TRAINING: CCAWA has recently been hosting Fiona Hurst from Footprint Training in Victoria. After numerous enquires following the success of Fiona’s training in 2022, the CCAWA Board made the decision to engage Fiona for a return visit. While in WA Fiona completed her two-day training courses in Busselton, Albany, MCB Karrakatta and Geraldton. Fiona agreed to travel to all areas of the state from the lower southwest to the midwest and once again there have been successful outcomes. Eleven shire councils, one Funeral Director and three Cemetery Boards were represented and participated with positive feedback from the educational opportunity to learn more on grave safety, preparation of graves, soil conditions, working in confined spaces, exhumations and more that was provided to members.
ACCA / PETER MACLEAN AWARD WINNER: Melissa Marcon from the Shire of WonganBallidu and winner of the CCAWA 2023 Peter MacLean Award recently returned from the annual ACCA conference in Melbourne. It is the first time in a few years that the winner has had the opportunity to attend the conference and from all accounts Melissa enjoyed the experience, the learning opportunities, the cemetery tours, and the opportunity to network with colleagues in the industry. Melissa also enjoyed the opportunity to view new

products and cemetery design is always a welcome addition to the experience, as well as meeting up with suppliers. It was Melissas first time attending the conference and from feedback received she is hoping it won’t be her last. Both Melissa and CCAWA President, Christine McGrath who also attended the conference were successful winners of prizes and giveaways during the conference, putting WA on the map.

WHAT A YEAR FOR ACCA EDUCATION! ACCA Education in conjunction with Relationships Australia Victoria (RAV) hosted multiple online workshops throughout the year which saw attendance and demand at an all-time high. With Vicarious Trauma workshop proving to be the most popular, Managing Challenging behaviours and Supporting Grieving clients were also in demand. We also facilitated and hosted multiple onsite workshops for our members for larger groups of staff members wanting to undertake the training as well as an onsite workshop for CCAV members and we are delighted with the positive feedback we have received. After receiving feedback from ACCA Members, we incorporated a ‘lived experience’ learning experience into the workshops and seminars. Funeral director Amy Pettigrew spoke about her experience of what it is like to not only work within our industry, but to work in an industry where grieving clients are our everyday, whilst also having to navigate grief of her own with the unexpected illness and death of her father, sharing her own grief experience and the skills she developed during that time and how she relays this to her every day when working with grieving families. The workshop discussed and shared how to provide strategies to cope and improve for the future. We are looking forward to rolling out more lived experiences in 2024. This year we also ran workshops around understanding the two industry standards that have been officially registered with Standards Australia - AS 4204:2019 – Headstones & Cemetery Monuments & AS 4425:2020 –
Above-ground burial structures. We rolled this out in person at our Mid-Year Training & Education Seminar held in Caloundra QLD where we introduced Sach Killam of Rookwood Cemeteries who provided attendees a detailed presentation. This lead to a breakout session held at the ACCA Conference & Trade Exhibition in October this year. Each of these workshops are being designed specifically for those working in the cemeteries, crematoria and funeral sectors. The detail and focus of these workshops on our industry and it’s unique positioning within our bereaved communities makes it a critical learning opportunity for you and your staff. ACCA Education are currently finalising our training schedule for 2024. See next page for the first scheduled workshop in February. We can facilitate multiple workshops either online or in-person for you and your staff. Contact Ben or Alison in the ACCA office to find out more about training in 2024.
