HOME INSURANCE CHECK Floods and fires have devastated several parts of Australia in recent years. As a result of these disasters there have been numerous changes to home insurance pricing and inclusions. Home owners are being encouraged to shop around for their insurance policies and double check the current policy content. From 1 July 2013, the existing Fire Services Levy (in place to help fund our states fire services) was removed from insurance premiums and is now being collected through council rates. This means that all property owners are now contributing to the funding, not just those who had adequate insurance. To protect consumers during the transition, and to make sure insurers genuinely pass on savings, the Fire Services Levy Monitor has been established. However, as a starting point, policy holders should speak to their insurance company and discuss any changes made to their existing policy. And when it comes to flood cover, understanding policy wording is paramount. Residents in high risk flood areas will no doubt already be familiar with the dramatic increases in their policy premiums over the last couple of years. They will also understand the difference between river flood and man-made water flood. Everyone else should familiarise themselves with their flood cover and make sure their policy cover is adequate. For more information about the Fire Services Levy Monitor visit www.firelevymonitor.vic.gov.au or call 1300 300 635. Craig J. Stephens Managing Director / Officer in Effective Control M 0418 547 938
