The sheer joy and wide-eyed expectation on the faces of children as they burst through the entrance gates for a day at the Royal Melbourne Show is enough to warm the heart on the chilliest spring day. The Royal Melbourne Show is a wondrous experience that has been part of Victorian life for nearly 170 years. This annual extravaganza of fun, frivolity and fairy floss continues to be Victoria’s largest and most iconic community event, catering for more than half a million people. This year the Royal Melbourne Show — at the famous Ascot Vale showgrounds —kicks off on Saturday, September 23, and finishes on Tuesday, October 3. Traditionally, this is a time when country greets city, and there is no better example than the popular animal precinct, where city slickers can experience a taste of farm life — milk a cow, shear a sheep or train a horse.
The Royal Show has become a growing foodie festival, and this year some of Melbourne’s best eateries, such as Mamasita, Le Petit Gateau, Tokyo Tina, Zumbo, Lux Bite and Smith & Chips, will rotate in pop-up restaurants. You also can indulge in a cheese platter and charcuterie plate at the Winning Tastes Deli or a cocktail at the Winning Tastes Cocktail bar. For the adventurous and fun-loving, the Thrillseekers Carnival will be as entertaining as ever, while the Freestyle Motocross Stunt Show shares the main arena with the spectacular Horses in Action, which showcases skill of rider and the athleticism of the horse. As usual, Showbags will be a highlight, this year featuring hundreds of bags ranging from the Bertie Beetle bag to the higher end, more extravagant show bags. Of course, there would be no Royal Melbourne Show without an assortment of animals, creative arts and crafts and the splendid sideshows … it will be hard to wipe the smile off your face.
