Charity Spotlight: Helping Bonaire’s Children Read and Write Meet Stichting Lezen & Schrijven Bonaire and the Mediabus Stichting Lezen & Schrijven Bonaire works to prevent illiteracy with reading and writing programs for children. Its recent projects have included a national reading day in June, in which nearly 100 volunteers read to children in schools and day care centers, and an 11-day summer school. Year-round, Stichting Lezen & Schrijven operates the Mediabus, a mobile library that includes computers and wifi. Every afternoon, the Mediabus visits different neighborhoods of Bonaire, reaching out to children all over the island and providing an opportunity for them to borrow books, access the internet and do homework -- all for free. During the upcoming school year, the foundation hopes to expand the Mediabus stops to include morning visits to schools, since most schools on the island do not have their own libraries. The foundation could use donations to help with the Mediabus expenses, which including paying the driver and the librarian, and buying gasoline, as well as new books and computers.
