Remy Mesrobian's Landscape Architecture Portfolio 2020

Page 1

My name is Remy Mesrobian, I’m 31 years old and grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. As an innately curious person, I was quickly drawn to a career in which curiosity can be exercised and fed in abundance. Studying and practicing Landscape Architecture has equipped me with a set of skills that have provided a bounty of fruitful experiences beyond any of my wildest expectations. I’m indebted to those who’ve given me the opportunities to learn, and the knowledge they have selflessly shared with me along the way. After a colorful six years in the industry, I’m more inspired than ever to be practicing as a Landscape Architect in my home state of Wisconsin.

FORM INDULGENCE + PARK DESIGN Â Â? Â?Â? Â? COURSE: FORM AND EXPRESSION IN GARDEN DESIGN

PROJECT YEAR: 2010

PROJECT LOCATION: AURORA, CO PROJECT OBJECTIVE: Each year, The Wheatlands neighborhood council in south eastern Aurora gives the LA program the opportunity to re-design their 5.2 acre park and present in front of the HOA. The project is as close to an open canvas as one could be, enabling students to prioritize and experiment with form, earthwork, composition and pattern. CONCEPT: Programmatically, it seemed the most desired feature was a park pavilion to host community gatherings. As this pavilion took shape on plan, it started to appear as if it was the footprint of a house. This realization is what birthed the overall concept, that the park was to be designed and oriented as if the pavilion was the ‘Homestead’. This decision would then define the space surrounding the pavilion as the “front yard and “backyard of the park. Each design characteristic such as form, pattern, and earthwork would be determined by typical “front yard / backyard archetypes. For example, planting in the front yard would be tight and manicured, featuring more ornamental species while planting in the backyard would be more naturalistic, featuring more unruly native species. This philosophy would be carried through each element of the design process. It was my hope that by orienting the park this way, the visitor would gain a sense of immediate familiarity and comfort within the space, while also providing moments of discovery and wonder through unique form, earthwork, and structural elements.

MAIN APPROACH:

The main entrance to wheatlands falls directly on the main axis of the park. By orienting key features along this axis, the visitor may be able to better understand and familiarize themselves with the park. The stone wall towards the end of this view features a rectangular portal which holds dramatic views of the ‘Great Lawn’

RETENTION POND AND PRAIRIE WALK :

The retention pond is designed to collect storm-water runoff as well as runoff from the irrigated apple orchard. When full, it provides a life giving water element to the park, creating a safe haven for local wildlife while boasting habitat for flora and fauna. 7

RM PORTFOLIO VER. NOV. 2020

FOREST TRAIL:

The forest trail takes visitors on a windy loop around the entire park. It runs along or in the vicinity of every feature in the park. The forest contains a mix of Ponderosa, douglas fir, spruce, and aspen trees.

PAVILION SECTION DETAIL:

This section is meant to communicate the relationship between the three separate levels of the pavilion while exploring preliminary ideas for materiality and site furniture.

GOOD CITY FORM

COURSE: URBAN DESIGN PROJECT YEAR: 2012 PROJECT LOCATION: DENVER, CO

PROJECT OBJECTIVE: To investigate a notoriously disjointed and neglected neighborhood in Denver called ‘5 points’. The area has been challenged with poverty and lack of identity for decades due to its lack of connection to the rest of the city despite its close proximity. The objective was to propose ways to reshape and connect the intersection through a highly conceptual design process. As a preliminary assignment, we were asked to conduct a case study on a city of our choosing in hopes to identify and understand the different archetypes of the urban fabric.

9

CONCEPT: My concept started by identifying what seemed to be cursing this area for so long, and that was its lack of ability to integrate with the rest of the city. Its lifeline had been cutoff by a patchwork of awkward roadways and exclusion from main public transit routes. In order to activate the neighborhood, it was in desperate need of bold transit oriented development. I saw an opportunity to propose a ‘Transit Hub’ that would to be tied into the existing light-rail line in Denver. The hub would be displaced directly underneath the intersection, creating space at the ground level to be developed into a cultural node or public plaza. The plaza would create a stage for local small business to showcase their identity and benefit from the highly trafficked public transit hub. I also saw an opportunity to syndicate man-made infrastructure with green infrastructure by proposing a large scale bio-swale called the ‘Green Ribbon’. The greenspace would encourage more visitors and set the stage for residential development surrounding the Cultural Node.

[3] SENIOR CAPSTONE: RIVER NORTH ARTS DISTRICT [RiNO] COURSE: COMPREHENSIVE LANDSCAPE DESIGN PROJECT YEAR: 2013

PROJECT LOCATION: DENVER, CO PROJECT DESCRIPTION: For the Terminal studio, students were given the opportunity to research, analyze, and come up with design solutions for degraded landscapes of their choosing.

With a deep interest in river revitalization, waterfront parks, and phytoremediation, I knew I wanted water to drive the narrative of my project. I decided to investigate a portion of the South Platte river that cuts through a neglected post-industrial neighborhood called the River North Arts District, or RiNO. Through GiS analysis, it became apparent that this section of the river played a vital role not just environmentally, but also as a opportune place for open space to serve a budding art community on both sides of the river. GiS also revealed the watershed that emptied into the outfall within the chosen site, which was responsible for over a 25% of Denver’s storm water runoff, which was contributing to the erosion and black water problem that has been degrading this section of the river for decades. CONCEPT: The concept was driven by water, and its role as a lifeline for both the RiNo community and the surrounding ecological systems of the South Platte River. Design interventions would include a riverfront park, a pedestrian bridge, a wetland, and the daylighting of the 36th st. storm water outfall. The park would feature a sculpture walk that would host gallery nights for up and coming artist within the community. The pedestrian bridge would link the work-live community across the river to the park side, while integrating into the existing south Platte river bike trail. The wetlands would function as a sponge to clean and slow the pace of the river, providing a haven for native bird and fish species. The daylit corridor would slow down and clean around 25% of Denver’s storm water while providing a spectacle for the RiNo community.

[4] NORMAN JAFFE HOUSE, LONG ISLAND

CLIENT: DANIEL AND STEPHANIE ARSHAM PROJECT YEAR: 2020 STATUS: In progress (Est. Completion by Spring 2021) PROJECT LOCATION: Northpoint, New York PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Studio Lily Kwong was asked to develop a site plan for Daniel Arsham’s Long Island home designed by American architect, Norman Jaffe in 1971. As a contemporary artist based in New York, Daniel was open to a creatively driven process that experimented with plant material, light, texture and form. The program consists of playful elements that include a meadow with a meandering sculpture walk, several Japanese inspired gardens, and a windy gravel trail that doubles as a ‘racetrack’ for his 6 and 3 yr old kids to lap on their bikes. We did our best to select Long Island Native plant species and sourced only local stone in hopes of creating a seamless and sustainable construction process. My role on the project was to was to assist with conceptual design and produce all deliverables including renderings, diagrams, and construction drawings. I also played a role in initial site visits and coordination with contractors throughout install.

PART III PROFESSIONAL WORK

[7] BROOKLYN BROWNSTONE BACKYARD CLIENT: Andrew and Rosie Parietti PROJECT YEAR: 2020 STATUS: Complete PROJECT LOCATION: Fort Greene, New York PROJECT DESCRIPTION: The client approached me to design + build the backyard of their newly renovated brownstone in Fort Greene, New York. I decided to take on the project in the summer of 2020, after the 1st wave of the pandemic was slowly being subdued. This gave me the chance to spend the summer outside, doing what I love most, working with my hands in the sun. It was fascinating to see the work come together one day at a time, and to witness how small, thoughtful tweaks to the design during construction can add so much value to the space.

[8] GLOSSIER POP-UP

PROJECT YEAR: 2019 STATUS: Complete PROJECT LOCATION: Seattle, WA

CLIENT: GLOSSIER

Studio Lily Kwong was asked to collaborate with the cosmetics company ‘Glossier’ to design a pop-up shop in Seattle, WA that would display a new line of products the company was launching in Summer 2019. Located in the city’s Capitol Hill neighborhood, the temporary groundlevel showspace occupies 1020 SF. The design features rolling mounds of moss with clusters of native grasses and perennials, drawing from the surrounding pacific northwest land ecologies. The structured mounds consist of ribbed plywood shapes covered in a wire mesh that can be punctured to set in plant containers. One of the big challenges of the project was ensuring the plants would thrive throughout the 45 day pop-up. The space needed several adjustments, such as water tight flooring (shown in red) under the mounds, as well as outfitting a full grow light system into the existing outlets. The contract called for an extensive maintenance package that included alternate day watering and pruning to keep everything looking lively and tidy.

PART IV TEMPORARY LANDSCAPES

[9] GLOBES

ƒ

CLIENT: TBD PROJECT YEAR: TBD STATUS: In Proposal PROJECT LOCATION: World Wide PROJECT DESCRIPTION: Studio Lily Kwong’s ‘Globes’ is a public art initiative that explores the potential of activating space through experiential sculptural installations. The initiative invites artists and designers to propose their own unique version of a spherical structure to exhibit in their communities. The only guideline is that the structure itself has to be spherical in shape. The concept was inspired by ‘CowParade’, an international public art exhibit that provided fiberglass cow sculptures to be used as the canvas for local artists to paint their work on. These sculptures would then be donated or sold for charity after the exhibit was over. SLK wanted to kick off the international exhibit by proposing their own version of a ‘Globe’ to be installed at Pier 39 in San Fransisco, CA. This 20’ x 30’ structure would draw on Buckminster Fuller’s Geodesic Domes. The structure would be fabricated in a steel frame painted ‘international orange’ to loosely tie in contextually with the Golden Gate bridge. It would be faceted with red glass panels that would refract light in different ways during various parts of the day. The Dome would be nestled in large mounds featuring a native perennial mix that would bloom throughout the exhibit. Becuase the structure is designed to be flat-packed and deployed with ease, there is a vast opportunity to re-create this scene in various contexts, proving an afterlife for the structure to be used for temporary events after the innitial exhibit.

PART V GRAPHIC WORK

[ 10 ]

CARTOGRAPHY IN CENTRAL AMERICA CLIENT: RANCHO SANTANA RESORTS YEAR: 2017 LOCATION: POPOYO, NICARAGUA PROJECT DESCRIPTION: During my time working as a Landscape Designer for Rancho Santana, one of my assignments was to revamp their existing Property, Trail, and Real Estate Maps. This process started by surveying all the newly added trails, roads, and properties throughout the 2,700 acre Resort. I collaborated with marketing and real estate teams to develop branding language and a deliverables to offer to new guests and potential buyers. I developed a Pocket Trail Map that provides trail descriptions, difficulty ratings, and trail lengths. The map also featured a “Field Notes section, encouraging users to write down their experiences as they explore the multiple ecosystems throughout Rancho Santana.

[ 11 ] FREEDOM GARDENS YEAR: 2020 - ONGOING LOCATION: WORLDWIDE www.freedom-gardens.com @freedom_ gardens

PROJECT DESCRIPTION: “Freedom Gardens is a community driven platform to inspire people to grow their own food. It aims to be a collective resource that shares tips, stories, and knowledge of farmers and homesteaders. The movement was inspired by the Victory Gardens movement during World War II when the governement encouraged civilians to plant home gardens in order to supplement their own food and boost moral. Similar to Victory Gardens, the Freedom Gardens movement was birthed during a global crisis as the coronavirus pandemic was wreaking havoc on our country. “It’s time to revive gardening as a civic duty during this moment of peril and crisis. To grow our own food is to protect ourselves from food insecurity and injustice, it is to live in freedom from a precarious and inequitable global food system. -Studio Lily Kwong
