The exhibition Spaces and Places unites large scale works which continue Candida Höfer’s examination of iconic spaces with smaller works in which she approaches the more abstract qualities of places she has encountered. The former require the patience of examination, giving each detail equal weight to finally arrive at the character of the space. The latter invite concentration to facilitate discovery of form in the detail of the places that surround us. The images in this show reflect the inherent qualities of the detail – the ability to retain its own strength when viewed by itself while also contributing to the whole. Together these images celebrate the potency of the medium of photography to make this tension visible while keeping it in balance. Herbert Burkert
