COVER STORY

FLAGS OF NATIONS

The cover is inspired by the nations represented in the IH Graduates community. All the flag elements are dissected and rearranged according to the shape and color and letters of “IH” are hidden in it. It represents IH as a community that embraces unity in diversity and harmony in multiformity. See if you can spot your flag and letters of “IH” in it. Cover design by Rena Li

MESSAGE FROM THE YEARBOOK COORDINATOR

YEARBOOK TEAM

“...that the International House Graduate Student Association supports the initiative of establishing a yearbook committee, and having a Graduate Yearbook commencing from the year 2017”- Rachasak (Dave) Sachasiri “…we felt like pioneers entering uncharted territory. No one knew precisely what was to come” - Jack Cairns This is the very first yearbook produced and published by the Graduates at International House. It documents 2017, this eventful year, and the George Hicks graduates involved. I knew from the beginning that there would be challenges ahead. But at the moment I saw the number of hands had been raised to support the yearbook motion at the Special General Meeting, I realised our graduate community really appreciated the initiative of having our own yearbook, and this encouraged our team to overcome all the challenges. Now, looking back on this memorable experience, I was so grateful that I had a fantastic team who supported each other and undertook the tasks with selfless dedication. Rena, Tina, Lucy, Momi and Manisha: I am proud of all of you and what we have achieved. Thank you! You are the pioneers who made this yearbook marvellous. I would like to thank our graduate cohort for your participation in the production and hope you enjoy reading Graduate Yearbook 2017. Joey Junyi Zhang Graduate Yearbook Coordinator

MESSAGE FROM HEAD OF COLLEGE

MESSAGE FROM THE PRESIDENT OF IHGSA

If we’re lucky, the places and people that can give our lives an aura of magic potential enter our experience at the right moment to sustain our dreams. One generation can give another that sustenance, not so much by what they say but by how they live, and how they include one within the life pattern they’ve created. Invariably, the magic is based on place –not theory but lived experience, part of ourselves. Often the magic is in a special house and its inhabitants’. These words are based on Jill Ker Conway’s writing. Jill grew up on an isolated property in outback Australia and went on to be President of Smith College in Massachusetts, USA. She found a real home there and speaks about this

‘It was the best of times, it was the worst of times’, perhaps this is the best epitaph to describe the year 2017. We will look back and reminisce the ‘best of times’ that we had, and forget ‘the worst of times’ (hint: WiFi) that have gone by. I always found Dickens to be a bit dry, but he sure knows how to open a book with a memorable quote! 2015 was the year that graduate students moved into George Hicks Building (GHB), and at that time, we were unsure of how we would fit in, what would communal living be like, and what would our culture (if any) evolve to be. Now, three years passed, a culture of friendliness and a strong supportive community thrives within GHB. It is uncommon to walk past any of the common room and not hear laughter (and Joey’s loud

The success of these events is evidence of a strong esprit de corps gained by communal living. Each one of us bring our own story, our own voice and our own culture and we become one in IH.

IH celebrated our 60th anniversary this year. IH has a great history and a great future and you have all added to the IH story this year. We hope that you will have done the very best that you can in your university studies. Thank you for taking part in College life, being with others, looking out for each other, learning about each other, doing things together, making friends and meeting people from countries you have never been to but might visit one day.
