HOUSING

The project is located in Luanda, Angola where most people live in multi-family housing. As the capital city, Luanda faces a housing crisis where the housing available was either built during the colonial era or is too expensive for the majority of the population. The increasing number of the population is also the result of the housing deficit and the expansion of slums. The project aims to create a solution for a dense city in need of housing for young professionals. The intent of the proposed design is to create a place for gathering and social activity. The design also serves to accommodate the essential and desired amenities for its inhabitants that will spark economic activity and produce a vibrant public domain.

MARTIN PURYEAR MUSEUM The proposed design is an addition to the Menil Campus dedicated to the artist Martin Puryear .The concept of the design was to control light and create a contrast of materials and spaces. The design consists of a roof system of aluminum panels that wraps around the building in order to avoid direct sunlight into the building. The walls are made of site-cast concrete panels that blend with the aluminum to create the contrast desired. The galleries are spread into the long axis of the site and placed in an orderly manner. However, the two small galleries at the front are pushed back few feet to create a reflective pool at the entrance of the museum. Also the two big galleries at the each end of the site are push forward to create space for trees and green spaces. The galleries are connected by two halls and the lobby. The idea was to create a contrast of spaces with the halls being smaller than the galleries and make them transparent so the visitors enjoy the outdoors spaces while crossing galleries.

ROOF DIAGRAM

The iconic form of the roof protects the museum from getting direct light. Its shape and the way it folds the building makes it possible to control the light and creates a better environment for the artwork.

STRUCTURE SLAB

The slab is made out of concrete with reinforced footings to support the structure of the building.

CONCRETE WALLS

Vertically the building is supported by site-cast concrete walls. They are 2’ wide and 26’ high for the tallest wall.

SECTION 26

STEAL BEAMS

Horizontally the building is supported by steel beams that span over the shorter dimension of the galleries. It supports the louvers that cover the building and provide lighting.

THE CABIN

The project was conceived in order to satisfy a couple’s need for a place of peace and relaxation. Located on a lake shore the cabin provides ample views making it possible for the couple enjoy the views anywhere inside the cabin while also maintaining their privacy.

He has experienced a debilitating health issue and is now in a wheelchair. They need a home that will function for their new circumstance, but still desire a residence with style and comfort. In addition, they now have a caregiver who attends to the husband’s needs for a few hours a day. The Caregiver occasionally spends the night. The Owners Are art collectors and will need space(s) to display their artwork throughout the home.
