Doctoring Systems It's the Little Things That Count Doctoring systems have several interconnecting elements that lead to successful print jobs Critical components of flexographic or gravure print jobs are the anilox rolls or gravure cylinders and the doctoring systems that work to control the ink that lays upon the finished product. Properly installed and maintained doctoring systems also go a long way toward improving your bottom line, as they can directly impact whether or not your rolls or cylinders last as long as they should.

PE contracts decreased $.03/lb in November and decline another $.04-.05/lb in december and will likely find further pressure in the first quarter. PP dropped $.05/lb in November and another $ 0.10/lb in December. The dramatic erosion in the prices of energy and feedstocks are also rushing downstream to resins; while the plastics market is not in an uncontrolled free-fall, polyethylene and polypropylene markets are in the midst of a significant price adjustment. Both polyethylene and polypropylene contracts will record back-to-back decreases for the first time since May/June 2012.
A new report claims that global ethylene capacity will rise from 167 million tons per year in 2014 to an estimated 208.5 million tons by 2017, with the U.S .and China accounting for around one-third of additions over the forecast period, according to research and consulting firm GlobalData. "The impact of tremendous growth in shale gas is only now being felt, as North American ethylene capacity had remained flat over the last few years. Meanwhile, China continues to lead growth, solidifying the Asia-Pacific as the single largest production region and helping to push global capacity over the 200 mmty milestone by 2017

The Capatch is a cell volume tester
for anilox and gravure full coating rolls The purpose of Capatch The Capatch is "cell pollution trend watcher" and a quick method for measuring volumes of Anilox and Gravure full coating rolls in printing presses. The Capatch has a tolerance of plus or minus 10 percent. The Capatch is an additional tool for use in the printing press and gives a rapid reading but with a slightly larger tolerance. It takes no more than two minutes to apply the Capatch correctly. Variation in Results Much of the variations in results obtained by some users arise because the typical user does not push 100% of the indicator liquid out of the capsule and into the cells of a roll. After a five minutes training the users are trained and understand how to empty the capsule of the Capatch and understand how to force all indicator liquid between the Capatch foil and the roll into the cells. Application Frequency This depends on the type of production: frequent

Quality systems Capatch is a Quality Check device. We are familiar with quality systems according to NEN-ISO 9000.
How to use Capatch Instructions ! Step 1 Step 1 Peel off the backing of the Capatch making sure to leave it attached to the Capatch. You will later use this attachment to remove Capatch from the roll.
Step 2
Step 3
Step 4
Step 5
Step 2 The blue, green, brown or red squares show where glue patches are located. Place the square at the top of the Capatch against the roll. Take the bottom square or the backing and stretch the Capatch downwards and place the bottom square against the roll, ensuring that it is properly attached without any wrinkles in the plastic foil and without trapping air between foil and roll.
Step 3 Take the doctor blade and put the index finger on the arrow of the doctor blade. Keep the angle of your doctor blade roughly 45 degrees to the roll at all times while doctoring. Start below the marked arrow on the Capatch, squeeze the indicator fluid from the capsule along the scale printed on the Capatch, moving in a slow tempo but with a firm press from the index finger (not the thumb) on the doctor blade. A slow tempo is needed to allow the indicator fluid to penetrate the cells bit by bit. Repeat this many times until there is no more visible movement of indicator fluid. Then use the left or right side, meaning moving the doctor blade arrow to the left or to the right of the arrow on the capsule, to squeeze the rest of the indicator fluid out of the capsule; this is typically at least 10 percent of the fluid, although it may not be easily visible in the capsule. Be aware that a layer of indicator fluid accumulates between the roll and the Capatch foil which is not in the cells, therefore repeat sharp doctoring on the rolls to make sure that All the indicator fluid has been pushed from the capsule and between the foil and the roll into the cells of the roll. If you leave 10 percent of the little drop of indicator fluid behind in the capsule AND you leave 10 percent behind between the foil and the roll, the reading will result in a 20 percent error with the volume 20 percent too large.
Step 4 Read the result. Does the width of the stain have some effect on the volume measurement? Due to the properties of the indicator fluid, the width of the stain has no significant effect on the measurements and on the tolerance of plus or minus 10 percent. The speed of the plastic doctor blade does have effect on the measurement results.
Step 5 Immediately remove the Capatch by tugging gently on the backing.
Step 6 Step 6 Always clean the roll with directly after making a measurement. We advise to use IPA equivalent to clean the roll.
Viscosity Sensing in Printing Applications
Maintaining the right viscosity for printing ink is essential to ensuring a high-quality printed product. Mixing the printing ink too thin may result in color insonsistencies, mottling and weak color print. On the other hand, mixing the printing ink too thick may result in adhesion issues, feathering, smearing or fill-in. Furthermore, printing product with excessively thick ink results in unnecessary costs and wasted ink. IMPROVED VISCOSITY MEASUREMENT - In-line viscosity measurements provide real-time feedback for improved viscosity control - Quality and consistency of ink measurement is improved through intrinsically safe solid state sensor design - No moving parts helps increase the ink delivery system’s reliability, repeatability and robustness - Due to the sensor’s small size, ink delivery systems can be configured in ways that were not previously possible - Viscosity measurement is achieved by correlating the sensor’s BAW electrical parameters to the acoustic viscosity (AV) of the fluid - Closed loop control of viscosity is reduced through the use of modern output interface options - High – throughput flexographic printing is an ideal application example of the solid-state viscosity sensor Techniques for determining ink viscosity vary considerably ranging from manual measurement instruments to microsensors with electrical output. The traditional manual viscosity measurement method uses a viscosity cup and a stopwatch to determine whether the ink is too thick or too thin. Within the past couple decades, various viscosity instruments with an electrical output have been developed to replace the manual method and have allowed the measurement to become an integral part of the automated printing process. More recent advancements in viscosity sensing have resulted in the development of in-line, compact microsensors with the added capability of algorithm adjusments to optimize the sensing technique. Additionally , printing press original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) can now design their own ink viscosity control systems for spespecific customer requirements and realize considerable cost savings. This paper discusses the existing viscosity measurement techniques and reviews the latest advancements in acoustic wave viscosity sensor technology. VISCOSITY MEASUREMENTS In the printing industry ink viscosity measurement using a viscosity cup and a stopwatch is still considered to be the historical standard against which all other viscosity measurement techniques are referenced. There are numerous viscosity cups available, however, two viscosity cups, EZ Zahn #2 and Din 4, are the most commonly used.
10
Even today, some printers still make adjusments to viscosity cup reading. This approach has two major shortcomings : it increases setup time and reduces throughput. In addition, the accuracy of manual viscosity cup measurements is very dependent on how conscientiously the operators start and stop the stopwatch and how much margin for error they allow. Since numerous types of cups exist, the resulting cup-second measurement is only meaningful for the specific cup used. While electromechanical viscometers and automated viscosity controls have been available for over a decade, many OEM printing press suppliers have not incorporated them into their systems. In contrast, more sophisticated printing press companies use an automated approach in their press. As in other industries and other aspects of printing, automation improves throughput and quality. MEASUREMENT INSTRUMENTS Three electromechanical techniques are most commonly used for determining ink viscosity: the falling piston, the falling ball and the vibrating rod viscometers. The falling piston viscometer is composed of a cylinder and piston assembly. The piston is raised drawing the ink to be measured into the cylinder through an inlet path. The piston is allowed to fall by gravity, expelling the ink sample out through the same inlet path. The time of fall in seconds is a measure of viscosity that can be correlated to other units of viscosity, such as cup seconds or centipoise. Falling ball viscometers operate in a bypass line from the ink pumped to the printing press. Stopping the ink flow allows the ball to fall providing a timed measurement proportional to the terminal velocity and inversely proportional to the viscosity. The measurement is taken periodically and is not a continuous measurement. The separate fluid bypass is quasiindependent of the main loop to the printing press. It requires additional space to accommodate the separate flow path and associated instrumentation. The third approach consists of a straight metal rod maintained in resonant vibration by a continuously applied power source. Installed in-line to the fluid flow, the sensor is between the ink pump and printing deck. The operating frequency is in the audible range (typically 300-500 Hz). High-pitched sounds and vibration in the press that is close to the resonant or harmonic frequency of the rod can affect the reading. Based on the mechanical operation of printing presses, it may not be uncommon to encounter these frequencies, but they can be suppressed with mechanical isolation to allow acceptable operation. While falling piston,
falling ball and vibrating rod viscometers have been successfully utilized in the industry, a new solid-state solution further simplifies the integration of the viscometer due to its small size, ease of use, and output interface options. Equally important, the sensor allows users to configure the viscoity control solution that is optimal for their application.
VC-20xx VisConnect® Converter Series
SOLID-STATE SENSOR A solid-state viscosity sensor, based on bulk acoustic wave (BAW) technology, uses a piezoelectric sensing element excited by a high-frequency oscillator and operates in the thickness shear mode (TSM) of vibration. In this mode, shear displacement occurs on the crystal faces in the plane of the crystal plate. As shown in Figure 1, the displacement profile occurs throughout the thickness of

the plate and is a maximum at the surfaces. Because the displacement motion is parallel to the plate, the TSM continues to operate in fluids making it ideal for fluid sensing. When a TSM BAW device is placed in a liquid, a layer of fluid couples to the cyclical shear displacement of the vibrating surface. Increases in viscosity increase the damping of the TSM BAW. Also, the loading of the device reduces the BAW sensor’s frequency. The viscosity measurement is achieved by correlating the measured BAW electrical parameters to the acoustic viscosity (AV) of the fluid. The general relationship between acoustic viscosity and kinematic viscosity (in centiStokes (cSt)) is: AV = kinematic viscosity x density2 (in cSt x (g/cm3)2). The solid-state sensor is a fraction of the size of previous viscometers, has no moving parts, is insensitive to vibration, and provides an alternate design approach for users. Offered strictly as a sensor, Vectron’s ViSmart sensor solution allows system integrators and OEMs to implement viscosity control system designs without having to compromise their requirements.
The sensing solution readily measures aqueous or solvent based printing inks. As shown in Figure 2, the ViSmart viscosity sensor system consists of two to three components depending on the application requirements. For solventbased printing inks and other hazardous applications, the viscosity measurement solution consists of a hazardous location certified viscosity sensor, a hazardous location certified shunt-diode barrier and a DIN
rail mount converter. Figure 3 shows how easily the ViSmart viscosity sensor system components can be incorporated within a flexographic printing press. The sensor easily integrates in-line with the fluid to be measured, while the shunt-diode barrier ensures excessive energy does not get supplied to the sensor in the hazardous classified area. The DIN rail mount converter allows continuous and easy access to the sensor temperature and viscosity data on a CAN or RS-485 physical layer utlizing a variety of protocols. For aqueous inks and other non-hazardous applications, the shunt-diode barrier is not required and the sensor can be directly connected to the DIN rail mount converter. The sensor’s small size and other capabilities can have a significant impact in printing equipment design. For example, the sensor can be used in ink management delivery systems, including modular type designs that can be quite small or complex. In many cases, the sensor integrates so well into the equipment that the sensor may become virtually invisible and unnoticeable by the end user. Buried in the design and so compact that it is becomes hard to see, the limited space for the sensor precludes the use of other available viscometers. In the highly competitive printing press arena, the sensor allows flexibility in design, provides significant differentiation, and enables system designers to add value and customize ink delivery to suit the specific needs of their customers. SENSOR OUTPUT TO VISCOSITY-CUPS Printers have decades of knowledge based on the use of viscosity cups and often the optimal ink viscosities are known in units of cup-seconds for a particular type of viscosity cup. To simplify ink correlation procedures, Vectron has established calibration techniques that the end user can use to translate the sensor’s output into any unit of measurement they require. Whether it’s a Din 4, EZ Zahn #2 or any other viscosity cup, simple calibration techniques allow the printer to translate sensor measurements directly into units of cupseconds for their viscosity cup of choice. The top of Figure 4 shows the raw sensor AV measurement translated into units of cup-seconds for an EZ Zahn #2 viscosity cup. The bottom graph in Figure 4 demonstrates the minimal error in the translated value of cup-seconds viscosity. WRAP-UP The use of Vectron’s ViSmart Solid State Viscosity Sensors, Shunt-Diode Barriers, and VisConnect DIN Rail Mount Converters enable real-time measurement of ink viscosity. Due to the sensor’s

As a result, a more compact and more versatile ink management delivery system can be designed by either system integrators or directly by the printing press OEMs themselves with excellent system performance. Vectron’s ViSmart viscosity sensors reflect technologies discussed in this piece. They are offered in two series: VS-2000 and VS-2500, depending on the application requirements. For OEM printing applications, the VS-2500 series is the recommended solution and has an M12 x 1 circular connector. The VS-2500 is Ό1.00 x L 4.23-in. (Ф 25.40 x L 107.42 mm) and is substantially smaller than the falling piston, falling ball and vibrating rod viscometer solutions. The viscosity range is 1 to 400 AV (~1.7 to 510 cSt) for Cannon S60 calibration fluid with a density of 0.886 g/cm3. They visited German Higher Education and got the information that in Germany the student from 9 class will choose whether they prefer to be a specialist (SMK atau Polythecnic) or proceed to University to get a Degree. In Germany not just the government, the private manufacturer also has great influence on the success of their manufacturing production as 1 out of 5 German Company offer apprenticeship And later on 7 out 10 apprentice become employee. On of the sample AUDI with ites 38.000 employees also follow this system. As the employee worked as what they choose therefore enganged employee German is the highest in the world (in 2013 reach 13% while Singapore 9%). Singapore at present has more and more graduate every year – just like China and Taiwan. And now they are thinking to switch to more specialist school (SMK or Polytechnic). This is based on the reality every year they need more and more specialist to help their manufacturing industries more efficient, higher quality, higher productivity. The last few years with
the booming of the industries in Indonesia, employee demand very high increase, while if look at our neighbor country – Singapore the salary increment are minimum and even sometime less (in S$) 2007 2008 2009 2010 2011 2012 2013 2.750 2.850 2.700 2.900 3.000 3.050 3.050 What is actually engangement ? Employee engagement is the emotional commitment the employee as to the organization and its goals. When employees care—when they are engaged—they use discretionary effort. This means the engaged works overtime when needed, without being asked. This means the operator works very carefully and deligent, even if the boss isn’t watching. Engaged Employees lead to… higher service, quality, and productivity, which leads to… higher customer satisfaction, which leads to… increased sales (repeat business and referrals), which leads to… higher levels of profit We may have to make a survey how many % of our employee enganged.

Staying Fresh by Keeping Air Out Nabisco offers crisp chips with new, improved functional label
Keeping fresh air out of primary packing is the first step in preventing any baked good from becoming stale. The team at Nabisco Foods work hard to keep their Ritz Toasted Chips free of any unwanted exposure by providing a resealable bag to the customer. However, the Ritz team’s first attempt at this venture was less successful than desired. The resealable tab was too aggressive and was difficult to reposition for multiple closures. Furthermore, the application process of the tab left too much variability and too often covered up valuable graphics space.
Inspiration From Other Markets During an investigation process to solve these issues, Nabisco Foods began a dialog with Multi-Color Corporation in Batavia, Ohio. Multi-Color’s experience with Home and Personal Care had led to many developments in resealable laminates for various wet-cloth personal-use pouches. Nabisco hoped that this success could feasibly translate into the much more competitive food sector. Research and development teams from both operations soon began working together and presenting ideas to brand personnel for Ritz.; and soon a new label construction was approved. Improved Labels Lead to Efficiency Upgrades The new label was constructed from a stiffer substrate and a less aggressive adhesive to allow for more functionality, and used an FDA approved UV ink since the application stage was taking place at the bakery. Solving the label characteristics was only half the battle though; to increase the application accuracy, members of the Multi-Color technical team went on-site for Nabisco and actually reprogrammed the electronics of the label applicator to be more precise. Furthermore, the technical team was able to make a suggestion to switch to a recyclable PET liner that would allow for roll sizes to increase from 18,000 to 30,000 labels, effectively cutting changeover time in half. Good News Travels Nabisco Foods wanted to make each fill line just as efficient as the original, so a member of the Multi-Color team travelled to each plant and repeated the same expert service used to increase the efficiency and accuracy of the value-added label as at the first site. Ultimately, the design team at Nabisco was able to quit sacrificing billboard space to accommodate labels.

Solutions Offer Savings At the end of the day Nabisco Foods had received a label with an improved substrate, improved consumer functionality, and improved application techniques: even taking out some cost in the process. Keeping air out of a bag resulted in entire process overhauls, and provided savings that Nabisco Foods could pass directly on to the customer.

citrus is seen as the commencement of a revolutionary change in how the world labels produce. The Natural Light Labeling (NLL) system provides a more economical, efficient and environmentally friendly method to label produce that also enables item level traceability and in turn, heightened food safety. The NLL technology facilitates printing on produce with precise control without degradation to the product. This precise control of emitted light removes the pigment from the surface of the produce to reveal a contrasting sub-layer. Since this removal process has been designed not to penetrate the surface or “skin” of the produce it, therefore, does not promote decay. Not only is each piece of produce permanently coded, the specific information can be stored electronically for any period of time. Product Look-up Codes (PLU), Country of Origin (COOL),
Asia to produce 75% of world’s bioplastics by 2018
Biobased, non-biodegradable plastics, such as biobased PE and biobased PET, are set to gain the most production capacity growth, taking up 5.6 million tons in 2018, up from 1.01 million tons in 2013. Meanwhile, biodegradable plastics is expected to grow from 610,000 tons in 2013 to 1.1 million tons capacity in 2018. GLOBAL – Bioplastics production capacity is set to increase from around 1.6 million tonnes in 2013 to approximately 6.7 million tonnes by 2018, a growth of more than 400% in the mid-term. The data was compiled in cooperation with European Bioplastics’ scientific partners – the IfBB – Institute for Bioplastics and Biocomposites (University of Applied Sciences and Arts Hannover, Germany) and the nova-Institute (Hurth, Germany). Meanwhile, biodegradable plastics is expected to grow from 610,000 tonnes in 2013 to 1.1 million tonnes in production capacity in 2018. The research also indicates that about 75% of bioplastics will be produced in Asia by 2018. In comparison, Europe will be left with only roughly 8% of the production capacities. “With a view to regional capacity development, Asia will expand its role as major production hub,” says European Bioplastics. “Most of the currently planned products are being implemented in Thailand, India and China.” The association also noted that geographical regions such as the USA and Asia, are investing in measures ‘closer to market introduction’, which results in faster market development than in Europe. On the whole, European Bioplastics says that flexible and rigid packaging remains “by far the leading application field for bioplastics”, but also highlighted the industry’s expansion into new sectors such as functional sports garments with enhanced breathability to fuel lines.

What is more, the one-piece closure system adds convenience for the consumer because of its low opening force. Another advantage of the one-piece closure is the high opening angle (>150°) before the integrity of the filled product is lost – a two-piece closure starts to open after just a few degrees of turn, which could happen due to displacement during transport. support the upper end of the PET neck from inside and outside and keep the neck in a round shape. It does not require high application torques to achieve a secure seal and thus avoids any barrelling of the neck when the hotfill product softens the neck during the hotfill process. This support allows the quantity of PET resin needed to form the neck to be reduced significantly, as the wall thickness is down to just 1.5 mm. The one-piece hotfill closures from BERICAP are commercially available for 28mm, 33mm and 38mm neck sizes. Latest tests also show that the standard ISBT PCO 1881 together with the DoubleSeal SuperShorty can be used for hotfill applications at up to 88°C.

Few elements have as much impact on how a product is used as caps and closures. Jim Banks speaks to packaging manufacturers and big brands about the need for innovation in this area.
Across many packaging markets the usability of a product is often dependent on the nature of the cap on the bottle or the closure on the packet. So, too, is the ability to preserve the quality or freshness of the product inside. Yet, the role of caps and closure in brand identity is often undervalued. “Colour in closures plays a huge role in the identification of a brand or product for the consumer and will continue to do so, ” says Greg Bentley from the European packaging innovation team at Coca-Cola. “The size of a closure is also a key indicator for the consumer to identify the product type. smaller diameter closures are predominantly used on carbonated beverages, while wider closures are more often used for still drinks.” He continues: “For new brands wishing to deliver a key unique selling point the use of more technical closures, such as Flex or closing closures, can offer a clear on-shelf or performance differentiator.” Customer expectations are a key factor in
NEW WAYS OF THINKING Consumer needs are changing in many ways and analysis of population statistics in Europe show that in five of the seven largest countries, over 16% of the population is over 65 years old. This suggests that the demand for products and packaging tailored to the needs of older consumers-such as convenient closures that can be opened then resealed-will grow. Spain typifies this trend and according to research firm Canadean, demand for greater convenience in closures has grown significantly over the last five years there. Demand for dispenser, flip/snap top and sports cap closures incerased from 2,493 m units in 2010 to 2,631 m units in 2013-a growth rate that exceeds the increase in the total number of packs.
determining the direction innovation takes, though they are married to the needs to improve product safety and preserve the itegrity of products. “Consumers are asking for greater performance from their closures whilst, at the same time, demanding packaging with a lower environmental impact,” remarks Bentley. For manufacturers of caps and closures in the beverage sector and other market segments, particularly as demand from emerging markets grows, and it is important for them to stay ahead of both geographical trend and the changing needs of consumers around the world. “The 2014 cap and closure market did mainly increase in the beverage and dry milk business, mainly driven by exports to China,” says Yves Jozefiak, commercial director of Procap. “Brands are looking for more sophisticated caps to bring added value through new design and features like easy opening, and brands also want higher performances on the bottling line as well as more competitive products that use materials efficiently, which makes lightweighting important.”
“The most significant developments are still in the area of lightweighting of water and soft drink closures, although many of these go unnoticed by consumers,”says Bentley. “For me, some significant highlights with regard to innovation aimed at consumer needs are in the area of sports closures. ”For instance, our own custom sports closure used on Powerade provides coherent brand design and consumer drinking benefits. I believe that the Smartseal Flex spill proof closure, with its related consumer benefits, has a role to play if this closure can be delivered to the consumer in a 100% safe condition.
The size of a closure is also a key indicator for the consumer to identify the product type
23
THE DISPENSING ARENA THE MOST SIGNIFICANT DEVELOPMENTS ARE STILL IN THE AREA OF LIGHTWEIGHTING OF WATER AND SOFT DRINK CLOSURES, ALTHOUGH MANY OF THESE GO UNNOTICED BY CONSUMERS Outside the beverage space, there are many new ideas for dispensing products, such as the EZ’R foam dispenser from UK based Vetroplas, which is a revolutionary new system for the cosmetics, toiletries and personal care market. Users can quickly dispense a consistent stream of foam through a flip-top cap when squeezing the bottle upside down with just one hand. “The EZ’R foam dispenser has been a fantastic project to work on because it means that we are able to launch a genuinely new and radical product to market,” saya Simon Dix, sales director for Vetroplas.
“It is the result of lots of hard work and considerable investment on the part of our partner, Albea. As far as we are aware, such a method of dispensing foam has not been available until now. ”The cap contains the module enabling the mix of liquid and air to produce a consistent flow of foam through the cap.” Procap is another company focused on innovation with products such as the Procurve cap, and novel ideas for mineral water producers such as Prospak or Prospring caps. The company also supplies Nestle and Danone with more sophisticated closures. Its 38 Proline cap is specifically designed to adhere to the stringent requirements of sensitive non-carbonised beverages, which have to be packaged in clean conditions.
A GREENER CAP
While the specific needs of the product are essential in innovation marketing, the drive to use less material, in part to improve sustainability, is equally important. Director of technical marketing & business development at BERICAP Group, Lothar Brauer, says: “There is a difference between the beverage market and other sectors such as agrichemicals or motor oil, where we have to look at high product integrity and feature to combat counterfeiting. ”In beverages brands want to (use) a wide variety of colours and promotional features, like printing internet links or QR codes on the caps. Codes on the label could easily be read with smartphones without having to buy the product, which is not the case if it is on the inside of the cap.” Brauer continues:”Other innovations are driven by cost savings, though brands may say that is for environmental reasons. Too much weight reduction
ANOTHER ADVANCE THAT IS CREATING A BUZZ IS A NEW PLASTIC THAT WILL ENABLE THINNER AND CHEAPER PACKAGING in the cap, however, can lead to customers being dissatisfied, so the premium brands don’t want to exaggerate lightweighting because they want to be associated with high quality.” BRICAP came up with an innovative way to reduce cap weight, whilst maintaining the integrity of the closure and ease of use. Its solution raises the cap height by 2mm without compromising on the effectiveness of the seal. Bentley says: “I believe the continued innovation in the area of lightweighting solutions for closures will dominate the working time of closure engineers. For consumer visible innovations I can’t help thinking that dosing closures will start to play a bigger role for niche brands or new beverage concepts.”
SUSTAINABILITY ASPECTS The key to sustainability will be the emergence of new materials or processes that improve recyclability. Petrochemical company Saudi Basic Industries Corporation (SABIC) has introduced new products that will caps and closures, including the new bimodal High Density Polyethylene (HDPE) product SABIC HDPE AX7611, which is designed for sparkling water and carbonated soft drinks.
Another advance that is creating a buzz is a new plastic that will enable thinner and cheaper packaging. The patent application suggests the manufacturing system for this product could simplify the use of recycled resins or plant-based alternatives, and could improve overall recyclability of packaging by enabling caps and closures to be made with the same material as the rest of the package.
The material not only provides improved down-gauging opportunities, but also has higher flow ability than standard HDPE to enable shorter cycle times and, therefore, more cost efficient processing.
There is no doubt that novel ideas abound in the area of caps and closures and innovation, especially in lightweighting, is limited only by what consumers will tolerate.

Label Trends
How Digital Printing is Impacting The Label Industry
27
developing digital equipment for the mainstream packaging market. Digital printing is well established in label production, where electrophotography and inkjet enjoy growing shares of market value these are forecasted to reach over 27% in 2018. As populations increase and consumers in industrialised regions enjoy growing income, packaging demand continues to rise. Meanwhile, in more developed regions average household sizes are falling, reducing average print runs and therefore playing to the strengths of digital packaging. The variable data capability of digital presses also allows for versioning and personalisation, as well as allowing for rapid response of short runs. Due to stringent labelling requirements, the use of late stage customisation to print the final details of a pack or label are being used more, a trend led by the pharmaceutical industry. The market for digital packaging and labels was worth $7.3 billion in 2013 and will continue to show impressive growth for the next five years. Labels will account for the bulk of this volume with a value of $6 billion in 2013 - a total of 89.6% of all digital packaging. According to the study, analogue packaging will grow by 28% in the 2008-2018 period while all digitally produced material will increase by 375%. This obvious disparity in growth rates explains why many equipment suppliers are
28
The Western European market digital printing market is approaching $920 million in 2013, and Germany remains the largest country market for all print in Europe. Meanwhile, the US is the single largest country for print and packaging, and is by the far the most developed market for digital print. The US market is forecasted to grow to $3.38 billion by 2018.
As with many other innovations and technology advancements, the Expanded Gamut process has been a common flexo practice for years. It is now presenting its strengths and advantages to the narrow-web market. The high level of automation now applied to narrow-web inline presses is the primary advantage. Today’s narrow-web press offerings provide automated print head settings, on board colour management tools, and total job recall, to mention a few, but the advantages are many. This makes the Expanded Gamut process and highly innovative narrowweb press offerings an ideal combination to meet the challenge of digital printing. All inline, one pass with all converting features Although Expanded Gamut printing has become possible for the narrow-web converter to accomplish, it takes a considerable amount of upfront effort and homework to create consistent and reliable results. So, the question is, “How do I get started?” Optimization: The Journey Begins Before going to press with Expanded Gamut or 7-colour process, a narrow-web printer will need to do thorough evaluations of several things to achieve an acceptable end result. Here are a few of the questions that need to be answered. • What type of substrates will be used? • What is the plate DPI desired? • What type of ink system? UV- or water-based? Anilox Selection After determining the DPI that the job(s) will be printed at, the anilox rolls will have to be specified to deliver the smallest dot while achieving optimum solid ink density (SID). The most cost effective method for choosing the correct anilox roll is through the use of a banded anilox roll. A banded anilox has multiple engraving bands across the roll, typically five or more, that have different screen counts with different bcm volume values. Once the screen counts and volumes have been selected, a photopolymer plate that has tints and solid targets that match the engraved bands of the anilox roll will be made. This banded anilox roll trial will help determine the optimized engravings for the CMYK and OGV colours of the Expanded Gamut process. The fixed colour ink set used in the process typically includes: Cyan, Magenta , Yellow, Black , Orange, Green, Violet
The Ink Set The inks that are chosen for the Expanded Gamut process are not typical process inks. The CMYK colours have to hit a ∆E value of 5 or less to be compliant within the G7-ISO colour standard. The OGV ink should be mono pigmented and needs to fall within the proper hue angles of Flexographic Image Reproduction Specifications & Tolerances (FIRST), while achieving the most chroma. Plate Durometer and Tape Density To achieve the highest level of print quality, the durometer of the printing plate, in combination with the foam density of the mounting tape, needs to be tested. The desired result is to be able to print the smallest highlight dot while printing the optimum SID. If this balance is off, you will have too much dot gain or too much pinholing in the solid areas. During the optimization process, the different types of substrates that are used will need to be tested. The “one size fits all” motto will not work. You will need to print test each substrate to obtain the correct information, density, dot gain, colour hue, etc., that will be used during the next step. Fingerprinting The Press After the optimization of the anilox, ink, plates and mounting tape is completed, the press will need to be fingerprinted to determine where the dot gain and solid ink densities are. The purpose of the fingerprint is to: • Linearize the press to an industry standard such as GRACoL/G7 • Neutralize press for gray imbalance • Produce neutral print curves To be able to achieve consistent and repeatable results in your printing process, the fingerprint must be run under normal conditions and at production run speeds, i.e. 250 fpm. Virgin ink, along with clean anilox rolls, must be used. Consistency is key for success. A spectrophotometer is used to measure colour and densities, as well as check for even plate impression, which should be 3 percent or less between operator and gear side. Watch for skips in the print or dirt on the targets. This will cause the test results to be inaccurate. After the fingerprint data is collected and extrapolated, the next step will be to apply a curve to compensate for dot gain. Profiling For EG After the fingerprint test, the next step in the Expanded Gamut calibration process is profiling. A new set of plates with the curve applied will be used to print the profile test target. There are several printruns for this test. The initial test is to print the plates in the CMYK stations. Begin by moving the cyan plate to the orange station and running the colour combination of MykO. Then, return the cyan plate to the cyan station. Next, move the magenta plate to the green station and print the colour combination cGyk. After this, move the

print performance, greatly reducing human factors.
magenta plate back to the magenta station. Lastly move the yellow plate to the violet station and run the colour combination cmVk. With these four data set combinations the Expanded Gamut profile is ready to be validated. Once validation of the data is complete, conversion of screen builds into spot colours can be accomplished through prepress software. Automation Equals Process Control The Expanded Gamut process requires a high level of registration and web tension control to be successful. Building multiple spot colours out of multiple screens requires registration tolerances of 0.001 or below. CI presses always had an advantage of colour to colour registration, due to the single impression roll and efficient web tension control between decks. Traditional inline presses were constructed with line shaft designs, gear boxes and gear-driven transmissions that would contribute to line shaft whip through speed ranges, gear backlash tolerances as well as tension deviations due to multiple impression cylinders. These variables were the main contributing factors to lineal registration movement. If you could hold under 0.005, you were having a great day. The current automation technology on narrow-web inline presses offers the ability to maintain the tightest register tolerances that allow the Expanded Gamut process to succeed. There are many other advantages that automation has provided to better control our printing process. Having the ability to save and recall roll positioning is key to allowing the Expanded Gamut process to integrate seamlessly with the flexo workflow, it improves performance by only requiring a simple roll change by the operator. Recalling a saved job will reset the entire process to its last known saved position. One servo motor controls the rotational axis to reset lineal register; another controls lateral register and yet others control print roll impressions. A production run six months ago will be recalled and set up with no waste, all while the press sits idle. Now that the entire press is automated from the unwind to the rewind, every servo motor position can be captured for total job recall. The tension settings, dryer settings and all critical production information is now captured, saved and stored for future recall with minimal operator intervention. There are no longer manually adjusted knobs all over the front of the press, requiring highly skilled operators to reproduce past jobs. This level of automation produces repeatable and consistent
Transferring The Gamut The inking systems on the latest narrow-web press offerings have also taken the next step in performance, ease of use and increased productivity. In the wide web environment, enclosed chambers are a way of life. Enclosed chambers offer a single inking component that foster quick change abilities with a higher control of ink transfer, colour consistency and chemistry control. We can have this higher level of colour consistency and a more efficient on press process, so our colour management of the Expanded Gamut fixed colour set of inks will be more manageable. Since we are now running a fixed colour ink set, the makeready times and colour changes required for the Expanded Gamut process will be greatly reduced. Think of the savings in ink, consumables, manpower and machine downtime from running this process efficiently. Think of the substrate savings from not needing to colour match spot colours on press. Ask yourself the question: “Would I rather commit to managing these seven colours or continue to manage the hundreds of gallons of ink on my work off shelf?” I will take seven over 100 any day of the week. Even though it may seem like a lot of work, the benefits greatly outweigh the effort involved. There are several reasons that narrow-web printers should consider the Expanded Gamut process: • Reduced ink inventory • Seven ink colours versus hundreds • Reduced anilox roll inventory • Reduced wash ups • Faster job changeovers • Only change plates because the seven inks stay in press from job to job • Print by numbers utilizing FIRST methodology • Less down time and substrate waste because no need to match colour on press EG allows the printer to be able to print close to 85 percent of PMS spot colours within a ∆E of 2 - all from only seven colours. This gives flexographic printing a greater competitive edge against digital printing. The Expanded Gamut printing process has tremendous advantages for those who are taught to work by the numbers. As a FTA FIRST Implementation Specialist can tell you (such as Nilpeter’s Paul Teachout), employing the Expanded Gamut process on an automated machine and utilizing the FIRST methodology will insure its success. Press offerings of today, with job save and recall, automated plate positioning and more efficient inking systems, will allow the Expanded Gamut process to flourish in narrow-web. Combined with the proper methodology of the flexographic process, it will yield enormous advantages for those who embrace and educate themselves on the entire process. The narrow-web converter now has a direct flexographic solution to the digital challenge, where we will more than compete and offer a total printing and converting solution inline. GREATVIEW CHOOSES MARTIN TO BOOST ITS PRODUCTION EFFICIENCY Gang Hong (right) of Greatview Aseptic Packaging, and Gavin Rittmeyer of Martin Automatic, in front of an artist’s impression of Greatview’s new facility in Halle/D. The new plant include a Martin MASB butt splicer fitted to a high-speed press.
THE PHENOMENAL growth of Greatview Aseptic Packaging Company is one of the biggest success stories of 21st-century carton production. Nick Coombes takes a look behind the scenes of a company that in ten years has become the world’s second largest supplier of web fed aseptic packaging, and follows a thread of automation that has been fundamental to its productivity. When Gang Hong and Jeff Bi, two long-time industry executives hatched their plan for Greatview in 2003, few could have predicted its rapid rise to success – few that is, apart from the two founders. Jeff Bi, with his financial expertise, and Gang Hong with his sales and marketing background, joined forces in March 2003 and began to assemble a team of international talent, drawn from America, Europe and Asia. First off, Hong and Bi took up key roles at the Chinese state-owned Tralin Pak, located in Shandong Province, in the north of the country. According to Hong: “We got off to a tricky start. In the first year, we had to postpone paying salaries so that we could use profit to invest in building the business. But the employees preferred this to working for a state-owned company because they could see the long term potential.”
32
Still at the heart of company production, the Gaotang plant, where Tralin once began, supplies a full range of aseptic package formats for the domestic and export markets, and by continual investment in process controls, laser scanning, ink management, and print production equipment, the company has ensured it has stayed at the forefront of technological capability. Greatview opened its Shanghai R&D Centre in 2005 with the objective of developing spare parts and filling-machine production technology. Specialist technicians and aseptic packaging experts were recruited to the company, and new equipment was developed to provide technical solutions to a fast-growing market supplied by leading dairy and fruit juice producers. During this period, the company became recognised as a reliable alternative supplier of aseptic packaging material, achieving ISO certification, and constantly improving the quality of its aseptic packaging material to match the best that the international market could offer. In August 2008, following changes to Chinese anti-monopoly legislation, which freed up the market for competition in the supply of aseptic packaging, business began to grow rapidly. By 2009, Greatview had established a new plant in Inner Mongolia, adjacent to the giant diary belt that supplies the world’s two largest manufacturers of UHT milk. The new plant at Helingeer, which covers a site of 66,000 square metres, has an annual design capacity of eight billion packs, following the completion of a
new second production line in 2011. Having gained the attention of foreign equity investors, CDH Investments and US Private Equity investor Bain Capital, the company's capitalisation reached US$ 60 million, giving it sufficient financial muscle to embark on its next growth phase under the management of Hong and Bi, who remained the major shareholders. In November 2010, Tralin Pak changed its name to Greatview Aseptic Packaging Company, and announced its intention to float on the Hong Kong Stock Exchange. The launch was a major success, with shares closing on day one at HK$4.92, a 14.4% rise over the offer price. In all, a total of around 173 million shares were traded that day, amounting to approximately HK$830 million. In addition to its high volume capacity, Greatview is proud of the carbon footprint neutralising scheme that was incorporated into the Helingeer factory design, which, it claims, is one of the most modern environmental management concepts in China. The scheme is fundamental to the company management’s vision for Greatview’s future.
“Back in 2003 we looked closely at the market trends and spotted the huge increase in demand for dairy products. With China still an agrarian economy with restrictive government legislation, and the leading aseptic packaging supplier struggling to cope with increased demand, we saw an opportunity. The learning curve proved steeper than anticipated, and waste levels were very high to begin with, but we believe that Greatview has largely been responsible for the growth in demand for UHT milk in China, and as people’s tastes changed, they moved away from the powdered product,” commented Hong. A sound environmental profile is good for building customer loyalty, and the company works hard to validate its green credentials. According to Hong, all carton board used in Europe comes from sustainable sources, whilst in China, Greatview, amongst all its competitors, uses the highest proportion from sustainable forests. Part of the company’s vision has been to invest in the best possible equipment and technology, and the American company Martin Automatic has played a key role throughout Greatview’s development, according to Hong. “We inherited some Martin equipment at Tralin when we took over, and have added more since. I have no doubt it has improved our productivity and significantly reduced waste levels there, and this influenced our choice of equipment when we set up the new plant at Helingeer. Both plants are now fully Martin Automatic equipped.” Installation of Martin Automatic roll handling equipment at Tralin began in 2000 with an MTB butt splicer and turret unwinder, as well as a RMAP rewinder. According to Martin’s VP Sales & Marketing
Gavin Rittmeyer: “In the 40-plus years we’ve been involved in designing and manufacturing bespoke technology, one common theme repeats – that reduced manual handling and machine downtime result in lower waste levels and better overall print quality, both of which improve bottom line performance. The aim is simple, even if the solution is often less so – that’s why our global experience, which is second to none, provides the basis for sustainability in business.” Since Greatview took over the former Tralin plant at Gaotang, Martin has installed a further RMAP rewinder and MCBWW splicer to a second production line there. At the new Helingeer facility, the American manufacturer has installed two MTB turret unwinders and two RMAP rewinders. Gang Hong believes firmly that the economies of skill, scale, and automation are key to the company’s future success. “We operate our business with high moral ethics,” he said. “We’ve used water based inks from the very beginning. They are more expensive, and we could have taken a cheaper route, but we know they are essential for us to succeed in the international markets like Europe. We want to be seen as a global player – one that is leading China’s success,” he added. One of the company’s latest investments is at Halle in Germany, situated north west of Leipzig. Construction began in July 2011, and the plant was anticipated to have an annual production capacity of approximately 4 billion packs by the end of 2012, while providing jobs for 110 skilled workers. Seen as a milestone in the company’s international business development, the Halle plant is initially intended to supply Europe, the Middle East and the Americas via major seaports in Germany, Belgium, and the Netherlands. Annual output is eventually tipped to reach 16 billion packs.
Integral to the Halle plant’s capacity is a Martin Automatic MASB butt splicer. One of the most sophisticated of its type in the world, it features 14 drive axes, with eight servo drives controlling the splicer and six other AC Vector drives for the material handling and unwind rolls. According to Martin’s Rittmeyer: “This is a sophisticated machine that is designed to maximise the production potential of today’s high speed web fed carton presses. Along with a high degree of automation, it features a closed circuit camera monitoring system with DVR capture and a large capacity hard drive for splice unit diagnostics and remote viewing capability.” According to Gang Hong, Greatview’s experience with new plant investment and installation is unequalled. “We’ve built three new factories in 12 years, and what impresses us most about Martin is their ability to listen carefully to the briefs, all of which are different, and come up with a solution that combines efficiency and reliability with a sound return on investment. It’s why they are the market leader.” With demand for cartons growing worldwide at around 5% a year, Greatview is already formulating its next development plan, which will see company operations begin to cater for growing demand from India, Brazil, and Turkey, as well as China, where in ten years it has achieved nearly half of the 30% market share to which it aspires. Ambitious? Yes, but with its track record to date, few would bet against Greatview achieving its goal.

Indonesia’s Cosmetics Market As personal incomes in Indonesia are rising quickly thanks to the country’s rapid economic development, the market for cosmetics is definitely one to watch. Beauty and skincare products, even more than many other fast moving consumer goods (FMCG), are set to benefit from consumers’ increasing ability to afford everyday luxuries. While sales of cosmetics have grown fast over the past years already, there is a lot of untapped potential as Indonesia’s population grows in numbers and in affluence. Male consumers feature increasingly on the radar of cosmetic firms worldwide, and in Indonesia this segment of the market is just beginning to take off. The allure of the domestic market notwithstanding, Indonesia is also a significant exporter of cosmetics Nationwide sales of cosmetics increased by almost 15% from 8.5 trillion RP in 2011 to 9.76 trillion RP in 2012, according to figures from the Ministry of Industry. Based on estimates, Indonesian consumers continued to increase their spending on cosmetics at a similar pace in 2013, despite a depreciating Rupiah and accelerating inflation raising concerns about
40
the national economy. With both personal incomes and consumer aspirations on the rise, the market holds ample potential for long-term growth. Strong demand is attracting increasing imports of cosmetics from abroad, especially for premium products. Imports rose steeply from 1.87 trillion RP in 2011 to 2.44 trillion RP in 2012 and increased further to an estimated 3.17 trillion RP in 2013, the ministry’s data shows. Beauty trends and new consumers Apart from Indonesia’s robust economic growth, current beauty trends encourage the use of skincare products. As in other Asian countries, having flawless and bright skin is seen as a particularly important hallmark of beauty in Indonesia, both in men and women. Promulgated though advertising campaigns, the fair-skin beauty ideal reflects in TV shows and on magazine covers and resonates through social media among the country’s young and internet-savvy population. Rural areas lag far behind urban centres in terms of per-capita consumption of cosmetics, but they are catching up quickly as retail networks expand beyond major cities and as new consumers enter the market. Improving infrastructure and logistics are also helping companies penetrate rural areas An extensive survey by market research firm Nielsen
found that sales of cosmetics in urban areas increased by 9.4% year-on-year in the first half of 2013, while in rural regions, sales boomed by 27.5%. The difference in growth can be partly attributed to the fact that many inhabitants of rural areas have yet to become regular consumers of basic skincare and make-up products, which have long become everyday essentials for more affluent urban dwellers. Cosmetic makers will want to focus their urban marketing effort on higher-end and specialist products. The other major untapped market segment is that of Indonesian men. Cosmetics companies have reported sales growth in their male product lines at a multiple of the growth rates seen for female products. Facial cleansers and moisturizers as well as anti-ageing solutions are becoming increasingly popular among men in Indonesia, as targeted advertising campaigns featuring bikers and male celebrities seek to dispel the notion that using them is effeminate. Local players in a global market Global cosmetic firms are expanding their presence in Indonesia, where consumer goods giant Unilever has used its
longstanding local presence to assume a leading position in the skincare segment. In addition to marketing its Pond’s-branded skincare products, Unilever Indonesia has established a local brand around the Indonesian word Citra (Image). France-based L'Oréal sees so much potential in Indonesia that it picked West Java as the location for its largest factory worldwide. The opening of the plant in November 2012 followed annual sales growth of 30% in Indonesia for several years running. Local companies are keen to defend their own share of the home market with a number of highly successful brands. Leading Indonesian cosmetic producers are PT Mustika Ratu and the Martha Tilaar Group (7% market share), which sells a range of brands under its subsidiary PT Martina Berto. There is no apparent bias towards local brands – quite the opposite, in fact. A 2013 consumer survey by Credit Suisse found that while Indonesians “prefer local brands for essential items, […] appetite for foreign brands is higher for discretionary items such as fashion apparel and cosmetics, especially among high income earners.” The allure of the domestic market notwithstanding, Indonesia is also a significant exporter of cosmetics. In promoting their products abroad, major brands highlight their use of indigenous natural ingredients and their roots in traditional herbal treatment and make a selling point of their claimed expertise on ‘eastern skin’. ASEAN integration ups pressure on local producers Indonesia is home to hundreds of cosmetics producers, many of which are family-run small businesses. More and more of these firms are looking to ship their goods beyond national borders, and falling trade barriers across the region are making it easier for them
to do so. The ASEAN Harmonized Cosmetic Regulatory Scheme, implemented in 2008, standardizes rules on the safety and quality of cosmetics across the ten countries in the Association of Southeast Asian Nations. Notably, it requires national authorities to accept products that have been registered in any other member country, thereby tearing down non-tariff trade barriers that would in the past be misused to shield domestic producers from foreign competition. In addition, free trade agreements mandate a gradual reduction of import tariffs. Indonesia’s Food and Drug Monitoring Agency (BPOM) reserves the right to monitor imported products for their safety and quality credentials, but cannot prevent increasingly tight integration in the regional cosmetics market even if it wanted to. Rising cross-border trade makes for a more competitive environment, which entails both challenges and opportunities for local producers. It certaintly ups the pressure to make cosmetics of high quality at low cost. This should set the stage for market consolidation in Indonesia, with the aim to produce some strong players that can compete at the regional and eventually the global level. It should also inspire increased strategic or equity investment from abroad and cooperation between Indonesian and foreign cosmetic companies. Growth prospects a strong case for investment Increasing competition cannot take the shine off Indonesia’s cosmetic sector. Strong demand growth from first-time users among the male and rural population as well as increasingly expensive tastes and rising affluence in urban centres make the country a highly attractive market, while the prospects of expanding into ASEAN afford local producers the opportunity to reach millions of additional consumers.

Hershey
Innovation Efforts In the Spotlight CHICAGO — From line extensions to “industry-changing” innovation, the Hershey Co. showcased more than a dozen new products at the Sweets & Snacks Expo held May 20-22 in Chicago. The year has been one of breakthrough product development for the company, beginning in January with the launches of Lancaster soft caramel crèmes, Hershey’s first new brand introduced in the United States in 30 years, and the Hershey’s Spreads platform, which marked the company’s debut in the category. Still to come are more trend-focused products that include Reese’s Spreads, Brookside Crunchy Clusters and Ice Breakers Cool Blasts Chews.
Ice Breakers Cool Blasts Chews Launching in September, Ice Breakers Cool Blasts Chews are a hybrid of mint and gum. The chews are unwrapped and quick-dissolving, providing discreet freshness in “tight social situations,” Ms. Lingeris said. The products will be available in peppermint and spearmint flavors and packaged in an innovative slider pack. The product was developed as an answer to the declining gum category. Hershey had noted consumers’ gripes with gum: It may be messy or loud, it loses flavor and requires disposal, and chewing isn’t always socially acceptable, Ms. York Minis, which were introduced in May, claimed the Best in Show award at the Sweets & Snacks Expo

Business News. Consumer-centric innovation drives what the company describes as an “industry-changing pipeline” of products designed to solve unmet needs while leveraging Hershey’s popular brands. For example, Ms. Lingeris said, Hershey pioneered the explosive trend of bite-size, unwrapped candies in 2010 with Reese’s Minis and Hershey’s Drops in resealable bags. The company continues to expand the hand-to-mouth platform with new additions and varieties each year, and 2014 brings York Minis and new flavor extensions of Twizzlers Bites and Jolly Rancher Bites. Competitors have introduced similar scaled-down versions of popular candies, including Mars with its Bites line of Milky Way, Snickers, Twix and more; Ghiradelli with a new Minis line of small wrapped squares; Just Born with new Peeps Minis marshmallow candies; and Perfetti Van Melle with miniature Mentos and Airheads Bites. But, as Ms. Lingeris pointed out, “We did it first.”

Reese’s Spreads On the success of Hershey’s Spreads, the company is adding Reese’s Spreads. A creamy combination of chocolate and peanut butter, the product captures the brand’s peanut butter cup flavor in spread form. Hershey has a rich history of diversifying into other food products, from cocoa to baking to ice cream toppings, Ms. Lingeris noted. “Spreads was a natural extension for us,” she said.
Brookside Crunchy Clusters represents the first evolution of the brand since Hershey acquired it in 2011.

Also new from Hershey Krackel Bar, a mainstay in Hershey’s Miniatures Assortment bags, has returned in full-size form for the first time since 1997. “Our consumers have been asking for it,” Ms. Lingeris said. Fruit Punch Twists, which combine grape, cherry and orange flavors, and Strawberry Lemonade Filled Twists. Twizzlers Mixed Berry Bites rolled out in May, featuring bite-size soft licorice in cherry, black raspberry and strawberry flavors. Hershey also has expanded its Jolly Rancher line with Awesome Reds hard candy, including cherry, watermelon, strawberry and fruit punch flavors, and Bites Filled Gummies, which are bite-size gummy candies with a liquid center in watermelon, green apple and cherry flavors. York Minis, bite-size peppermint patties enrobed in dark chocolate, also was introduced in May. York is the No. 1 dark chocolate candy brand in the country, Ms. Lingeris said. The product claimed the Best in Show award at the Sweets & Snacks Expo, based on a combination of judging by industry experts and votes from retailers and wholesalers at the show.

Added Value “A Key Concept In Private Label Items” CHICAGO-With total U.S sales topping $112 billion last year, private label products continue to outpace national brands. The latest innovations were on display at the Private Label Manufacturers Association’s trade show, held Nov, 16-18 in Chicago, and they underscore a shift in the segment from off brand to on-trend.
Store brands also are branching out with unique offerings and fresh propositions. Metro introduced indulgent Belgian white chocolate covered raspberries at the P.L.M.A. show while Fairway Market added a guanuabana flavored Greek-style yogurt and Trader Joe’s has a barbecue rub with coffe and garlic.
In its 34th year, the annual show drew record attendance with more than 2,400 exhibit booths showcasing tens of thousands of products. Marking the show’s largest number of food exhibitors ever, more than 900 companies highlighted capabilities in frozen and refrigerated prepared foods, ingredients, snacks, gourmet and specialty products. The increase in food exhibitors signals a move among retailers to broaden store brand assortments by adding new categories and more premium products, the P.L.M.A, said.
Colorful graphics and informative copy communicate product information, ingredients and benefits on the packaging of many new private label products. Vegan sausage-style crumbles from Wegmans, for example, are packaged in a resealable pouch featuring an image of the product with several nutritional call-outs, such as ”made with soy”, recipe ready” and “low fat”. The packaging for Meijer Naturals bulgur and quinoa blend offers a glimpse of the grains inside.
Healthy ingredients, bold packaging and innovative concepts emerged as common themes among new products from store brands. Products positioned as organic and natural are showing up more on supermarket shelves as consumers seek more options for healthier snacking. Claims on a number of new private label snack foods and meal replacements included whole grains, seeds, a full serving of vegetables, high protein, probiotics and gluten-free attributes, as well as no artificial flavors, preservatives and additives. Examples included CVS/Caremark’s Gold Emblem Abound probiotic trail mix, Aldi’s Simply Nature exotic blend vegetable chips, Target’s Simply Balanced organic seven-seeds and grains rolled tortilla chips, and Rexall’s Be Better gluten-free sweet potato kettle chips.
A number of recent launches from retailers presented a novel spin on a classic commodity or staple. Trader Joe’s provided a convenient dining-for-one option with its single-portion turkey Bolognese spaghetti sauce, and Aldi offered portion and variety with a quartet of hummus spreads in roasted red pepper, cilantro jalapeno, garlic and classic flavors. With more shoppers gravitating to the grocery store’s perimeter, store brands also are landing in the in-store bakery, deli case and produce sections. The shift is seen in such examples as sugar snap peas at Kroger, artisan ciabatta bread at Ahold USA and home style Italian fresh ravioli at Sobey’s.

Corrugated Box Makers
Saving Quality vs. Preventing Waste
corrugated box waste
Example: tab scrap glue application problem
The corrugated box manufacturing industry has long been focused on reducing waste as one of the key drivers of efficiencies. Like most box makers, you are probably focused on reducing waste in your facility. However, most people fail to realize the complex interdependent relationships that exist between quality, waste, product price, cost and production volume. What if “increasing” waste built value for your customers or increased your revenue and “decreasing” waste actually increased the cost of the box or even lowered sales? With so much at stake, it pays to take some time to more closely examine the tipping point between quality and waste. What is Waste Anyway? There are actually two separate types of waste –
54
internal and external. Internal waste is typically what the corrugated box industry refers to as “waste.” Internal waste represents any defective sheet or box that is produced and not shipped to the customer. However, if you don’t catch the defective product and it ends up in the hands of the customer, it is considered external waste. External waste is rarely, if ever, discussed unless brought up by the customer. The cost is only accounted for in the form of credits for defects returned. Some customers do not return many defective or problem products to the corrugated box maker, resulting in an inefficient and distorted feedback loop. Misleading Numbers Through our investigations, we have found that the costs tracked for external waste are more often larger than the internal waste figures. Furthermore, customer complaints, credits and feedback are a minority of the actual rate of defective product that customers are receiving. What this means is that some customers are bearing much of the direct costs (downtime, lost productivity, wasted products) associated with external scrap rates, while box makers are bearing much of the direct costs associated with internal scrap rates. If customer complaints were, in fact, true indicators of the external scrap rates, this model would be useful for making operational decisions. However, discussions with end-users have shown that customers are not complaining about the vast majority of problems. Similarly, many box plants don’t complain about
every hiccup in their machines or every minor issue with their paper – that’s the norm and they are used to it. Because this feedback loop is broken, many corrugated box makers have a warped view (literally) of how much scrap they’re actually sending their customers. Options Two clear options are available to box makers for handling waste. First, do a better job of finding all defects before shipment and remove them from the production stream, increasing internal scrap rate and improving quality. Alternatively, send defects to customers in an effort to reduce internal waste, but increasing external scrap rates and decreasing quality. What are box makers expected to do? Is sacrificing quality worth the savings of reducing internal waste? What impact will this have on your business? Possible Solution The secret to improving both internal and external waste is not only to identify the defective products and remove them from the production stream, but also to identify the root causes of the scrap production and address them. Investment in quality assurance systems for box inspection, operator training, as well as PM discipline and keeping equipment current can both identify scrap and reduce its root causes. If management is committed to solving problems on the floor that are causing waste, not only will less defective product be produced internally
(internal waste) but also less defective product will be shipped to customers (external waste). In addition, profits will improve and customer retention will increase, which directly improves the bottom line. Finding the problem quickly through quality assurance devices and not having them occur from the other improvement measures will decrease internal and external scrap rates and improve the ROI performance of the business. End Result If investment in quality assurance systems, operator training, improvement in preventative maintenance programs and an upgrade program for production machinery can reduce the internal scrap rate, then the external scrap rate will be significantly reduced. Box makers will improve profits and keep happy customers who shouldn’t need to complain about the products they receive. Why pay the price of the traditional corrugated box manufacturing industry’s approach for quality, counting pennies and losing dollars. Packaging Solution
opening the filter housing allows air into the system, so make sure you have the proper purge valve setup before you begin. 2 – Make sure glue pressure follows machine speeds. For box makers, the glue regulator is the most important adhesive delivery component in determining how much glue volume is applied at a given machine speed. If you experience too much glue on the joint when the machine slows down, or there is not enough glue when the machine speeds up, it could be the regulator. To test fluid regulators without an electronic pressure control, use the T-handle on old style regulators and the Auto/Manual switch on the new style regulators to manually check the function. If pressure does not increase or decrease, a simple repair is in order. Valco Melton regulator repair kits for corrugated box manufacturers provide a quick and inexpensive solution.
5 – A slipping encoder can cause intermittent pattern length variations, which can mean a troubleshooting nightmare for maintenance departments. Encoders should be regularly inspected for smooth rotation, good wheel or timing belt condition and secure mounting. Box makers should also pay close attention to common problem areas such as incorrect belt tension, damaged encoder cables or loose cable connections. By adding simple encoder maintenance to your schedule you can prevent extended downtime and hassle. 6 - Glue hose lines back to the regulator should be inspected for kinks and flushed periodically to check for clogged sections. An inexpensive section of tubing can become a costly problem for corrugated box manufacturers if it causes a flow restriction, as this results in poor glue volume at high machine speeds. Don’t overlook the pump suction line. A damaged suction line could cause air pockets to get into the glue line. This results in skips in the glue pattern or no glue pattern at all. Signs of leakage are not always obvious; plan now to avoid problems later.

Let’s be honest, it’s usually an afterthought. We have seen time and time again, problems relating to adhesive dispensing equipment that could have been avoided if the box maker would have just followed a few simple steps, every so often, to make sure their glue machinery was running at 100% efficiency. To help you avoid this unwanted downtime and make sure your glue patterns are always at their best, here are seven preventative maintenance procedures for better box manufacturing. 1 – Overtime, particles and coagulated glue can build up on filter screens causing restricted adhesive flow and excessive stress on the adhesive. Cold glue filters should be checked once per week after installation or after a change in the type or brand of adhesive. Depending on the amount of build up, adjust the frequency to accommodate your dispensing equipment.Remember,

Buildup over long periods of time and a lack of cleaning after the machine is down can cause added downtime. Likewise, worn applicator heads can cause poor pattern quality (ticking at the end of the pattern, buildup on the leading edge or even missing glue lines). Applicator heads are wear items, subject to the abrasiveness of paper and are susceptible to some chemical corrosion after prolonged exposure. Quick-disconnect fittings are another critical component to achieving quality adhesive patterns. Loose applicator heads are prone to leaking. To avoid issues, inspect the fittings to verify that the applicator head is properly secured to the valve. Replace quick-disconnect fittings as required.
Don’t overlook the pump suction line. A damaged suction line could cause air pockets to get into the glue line. This results in skips in the glue pattern or no glue pattern at all. Signs of leakage are not always obvious; plan now to avoid problems later. 7 – Ensure there are no false triggers from tab scrap. Corrugated box manufacturers operating with tab-side installations are often plagued by flying tabs from the slotter. False triggers from tab scrap can be the result of broken or dull knives. Replacing worn out knives along with routine maintenance is recommended to combat false triggers from tab scrap. Additionally, a dual scanner setup using two photo eyes, along with control settings can help block false triggers.
4 – Check to see if the Electronic Pressure Control (EPC) speed-tracking curve is accurately setup. Doing so will help you to achieve optimum pattern volume at all machine speeds. If the EPC is not working properly, you are relying 100% on operator skill to monitor adhesive output. This requires constant adjustments in order to maintain proper adhesive volume. Without a functioning EPC, the amount of wasted adhesive can quickly become a costly problem. A quick disconnect fitting tip

ACCURATE REPORTING
DART
Data Analysis & Reporting Tool by steve whillis, kiwiplan europe
Kiwiplan has been providing software solutions for the corrugated industry for more than 30 yeras. The seamlessly integrated ‘Order to Invoice’ solution was designed specially for the industry by corrugated industry users. It has been generally accepted that the Kiwiplan products collect a huge amount of invaluable historical data across the more than 20 modules in the suite of products. This data can be a powerful tool to enable the user to find inefficiencies in production, track genealogy of paper for chain of custody intiatives and to give true pre and post production costing, to name just a few of opportunities. The challenge was to provide a platform to enable this investigation, trust the integrity of the data , provide it in a format that was expandable to unlimited plants across an enterprise and also deliver it in a format that is easy to understand yet informative for CEO’s through to shop floor supervisors. Some challenge maybe, but Kiwiplan has never been one to resist such a challenge. More than five years ago, the Data Analysis and Reporting Tool (DART) product was released to the market. The initial scope was limited to part of the MES solution, but in more recent times this has been expanded across the MES spectrum and now also includes sales and order processing, quotation, estimating, costing and more. As well as being an invaluable source of reporting and analytical information, DART has several other key value adding strengths: • Long term data archive-data storage is becoming a key requirement for the purpose of audits or general reporting. The DART warehouse can be utilised as an offline archive that can be easily accessed when audits are required or reports for longer periods needed. This means there will be no impact to the performance of the production environment as the data is automatically replicated offline and overnight. • True data integrity checks-many reporting and data cubing solutions will present reports and views, which are pleasing to the eye, but can you trust what you are seeing? Most just report the data, but do not check the validity or accuracy of the information that is being represented. Kiwiplan has built in functionally that will check the data and if there are concerns about the accuracy of any part, this will be reported and can be viewed directly from within the DART product.
66
Therefore, it can act as a potential training/data cleaning tool. • Third party data-often a customer runs part of the Kiwiplan solution and part of another third party system. To get the report/view you want out of the data cube, you have to create it from your own database. With DART, this is no longer a requirement. Data can be supplemented from a third party system which allows much greater flexibility to report what you want to report, as opposed to being restricted to what is in your database. DART has become a core product in the Kiwiplan suite of products and this has been promoted partly due to the increasing importance of initiatives like: • Pre and Post costing- knowing the true cost of production compare to the estimated cost has always been relevant and important, but with the cost of raw material and labour increasing resulting in margins being squeezed, it has never been more important to be able to analyse the costs. With DART this can easily be interrogated so changes to the manufacturing processes can be reviewed or lessons for future potential sales opportunities. • FSC/PEFC initiatives- chain of custody initiatives has become part of the norm for corrugated plants today. Your customers expect a plant to have either FSC or PEFC certification. Often this is expected with no premium payment for the product supplied to the customer. As a result, it is a requirement that is often considered as a pure cost. The implementation in itself is often considered as a pure cost. The implementation in itself is often manageable, but the issues arise when being audited to prove traceability of the source materials and products. With DART being seamlessly integrated into the other Kiwiplan modules, views can be created which will instantly display the genealogy of an order back through production and all the way to the source rolls. This saves time and a huge amount of paperwork. • True enterprise reporting-many times, reporting is restricted to a plant-by-plant basis, but with DART, trends across the enterprise can be reviewed. Company KPI’s and OEE can be established, reported and then analysed to see where potential
•
improvements are possible. Rollstock usage/loss-a key cost in any corrugated plant is paper and in all plants, paper is ‘lost’ between the rollstone and the take off of the corrugator. Some call this ghost waste, but there are many terms for this.
In the short time that DART has been offered by Kiwiplan, its true value has been realised by existing and new Kiwiplan users alike, DART is flexible, fast and only limited by the imagination of the individual.
With DART you are able to analyse: • What was received; • What was planned to run on the corrugator; • What was loaded on the rollstands; • How much was planned; • How much was run; • How much was produced through the dry-end; • How much was wrap waste occured; Armed with this information it is easy to see where waste is occuring and a focus on improving the problem area can be made and progress then easily tracked. Satisfied Users Brian Sorensen of Peterson Packaging has been an avid user of Kiwiplan DART for several years. Mr. Sorensen states, “We were impressed with the ease and flexibility with which views could be created that gave us the information that was of value to Peterson. Not just what Kiwiplan thought would be of value. It was also important from a cost perspective that we were able to create the views ourselves as opposed to having to pay a specialist to bring each idea to realisation.” Richie Goldberg of President Container rapidly realised that DART was not a reporting tool. Its real value is when you bring it into the everyday facric of your company. Mr Goldberg states, “We needed an casy to understand, fast analytical tool to enable us to see what was happening in our plant, make decisions on the correct path forward and then be able to track progress on a daily, weekly, monthly and annual basis. In no time at all, DART has become a critical tool in the development and success of our organisation from the shop floor to the management.” In the short time that DART has been offered by Kiwiplan, its true value has been realised by existing and new Kiwiplan users alike. DART is flexible, fast and only limited by the imagination of the individual.

Tokyo Pack 2014 Connecting the Japanese Packaging Industry with the World
The 25th edition of the biennial TOKYO PACK, Asia’s largest packaging show (7th – 10th October, Tokyo Big Sight), saw visitor numbers hit 1 7 8 , 6 9 8 , significantly higher than the 175,870 that visited in the last show edition in 2012. Exhibitor numbers also grew by more than 7% from the last show edition to 654 companies, of which 99 were first-time exhibitors at TOKYO PACK.
A total of 139 foreign exhibitors from 15 countries – China, Taiwan, South Korea, Thailand, Malaysia, the Philippines, Vietnam, Indonesia, Germany, Italy, Holland, Sweden, Switzerland, Canada and the U.S.A - were present at TOKYO PACK 2014, and reported numerous new leads gained from exhibiting at the show. A total of 3,422 overseas visitors from 45 countries also registered for the exhibition, jumping almost 40% from the 2,031 who attended the 2012 show. The official Packaging Insight Japan Tour - a one-day orientation program held on 6 October and designed by TOKYO PACK exhibition owner-operator the Japanese packaging industry association Japan Packaging Institute (JPI) and EP Resources Pte Ltd, Singapore, to help foreign visitors gain the maximum benefit from their visit to TOKYO PACK - was also fully booked, and included the participation of a 42-strong delegation from Thailand. JAPAN – On display for the first time at Tokyo Pack 2014, Rengo Co Ltd has developed an award winning transport and display tray for strawberries in conjunction with Ja Zen-Noh Tochigi. Designed as a substitute for the standard plastic containers commonly used in Japan to transport the fragile fruit, the new corrugated tray from Rengo holds 10 strawberry punnets suspended and cushioned by corrugated ribs, to prevent spoilage in transit.
When stacked, each tray has a rigid corrugated flange that ‘locks’ into the side-folds of tray above, leaving ample head-space between layers. This mechanism both supports the upper trays and also provides strength to the column of trays, preventing them from slipping and possibly collapsing into the lower trays, crushing the product. Since strawberry farmers rarely have box-erecting equipment, the trays have been designed to be easy and quick to assemble from flat-pack at the farm. Simple, but attractive two-colour red and green direct print onto the outer top linerboard, while a brown pattern for the interior tray supports resembles traditional wood containers and gives the illusion of a more expensive three or four colour flexo print job. This allows the tray to do double duty as both transport container and point of purchase display. When the strawberry punnets have been sold, the cartons are easily dis-assembled into flat packs and are 100% recyclable. The company was awarded the Japan Packaging Institute’s prestigious President’s Award in the Japan Star 2014 contest and displayed with the winning packs at Tokyo Pack 2014.

News...! Rengo acquires a 90 percent share in PT Indoris Printingdo Rengo announces that Thai Containers Group Co., Ltd. (TCG), a joint venture between Rengo and SCG Paper Public Company Limited (a subsidiary of The Siam Cement Public Company Ltd.), has completed the acquisition of a 90% stake in PT Indoris Printingdo, a manufacturer of corrugated packaging and folding cartons which operates outside of downtown Jakarta. HP and KBA collaborate to develop digital inkjet solutions for corrugated packaging Hewlett-Packard (HP) and Koenig & Bauer AG (KBA) are collaborating to develop new roll-to-roll inkjet solutions for the high-volume corrugated packaging market. KBA will be bringing its experience in paper handling, manufacturing scale and wide knowledge of the packaging market to the joint initiative, while HP will contribute its inkjet and IT technology as well as digital press go-to-market capabilities. The US$2.5 billion corrugated package printing market has been pushing the industry’s growth worldwide due to brand globalization, population growth and a resurging economy. In parallel, trends such
as stock keeping unit (SKU) proliferation, micro-segmentation and shorter product lifecycles are driving demand for the shorter run lengths enabled by digital print. KIWI Global installations in 2014 include: 1. Rock Tenn (USA) Completion of 60 ESP installations in one ESP dataset; 2. Tailim Ansam (South Korea) They run approximately 1,000 orders per day; 3. Duropack (Bulgaria) First customer to be running Cyrillic; 4. Rengo (Hawaii) Start-up of a greenfield site; (see related article here) 5. Oji (India) Significant start-up in a growing market; 6. BioPappel (Mexico) The start of a large roll out in Central America; 7. Allpak (USA) An extremely complex sheet plant project; 8. Rigid Charta (UK) Manufacturer of special corrugated fitments, edge protection and single face rolls.
Rock-Tenn, MeadWestvaco Create Packaging Giant Packaging companies Rock-Tenn Co (RKT.N) and MeadWestvaco Corp (MWV.N) agreed to form a combined $16 billion company to take on market leader International Paper Co (IP.N) in the United States and abroad. Shares of MeadWestvaco and Rock-Tenn rose to record highs.
The merger, announced by both companies on Monday, will create the second-largest U.S. packaging company behind International Paper, which has a market capitalization of nearly $23 billion. "There's significant opportunity around the world for us to grow as we see more activity in emerging markets," MeadWestvaco Chief Executive John Luke said on a call with analysts, citing India, Brazil and China as growth regions. MeadWestvaco shares were up 14 percent to $51.33 in afternoon trading. Rock-Tenn's stock was up 6 percent at $66.78.
Demand for the corrugated boxes made by both companies has risen sharply as internet shopping has taken off. Worldwide e-commerce sales are expected to have risen 20 percent to $1.5 trillion last year, according to industry data firm eMarketer.
