Dear Readers, Last month was the most important event for printing worldwide – DRUPA 2016. Marco Boer of IT Strategies mentioned that Print industry is bigger ever. The key facts : Offset still here not go away – as Heidelberg booth jump pack and they move forward with Digital, which the sample looks good, while HP booth is the biggest. Digital industry is now a real thing. They move forward with inkjet and toner combination. Lot and lot of inkjet machine and 1,8 m EFI ™ Nozomi single-pass LED technology, biggest inkjet printer with capabilities of which can reach speeds up to 75 linear meters per minuteis or 4.500 linear meters per hour (8.100 sqm per hour). We see collaboration that never before. Heidelberg and Fuji, KBA and Xerox. Komori with Minolta and Landa. Very interesting to see all the ink comply differently to different subrate. Toyo Ink start with EB ink, while Siegwerk start with Inkjet Ink. Marco also made presentation last March on NPES – ICC Color Management in Polimedia Jakarta and as well he was mentioning that Digital Inkjet is the way to go for future and Drupa proof that his research indeed was the way to go to future – digital Inkjet. Landa on Drupa 2012 took over 400 LOI from 7 printing presses sizes from A3 to B1. But now we decided on the high performance the size of the opportunities. Only 1 m wide only the fastest ones. And Benny Landa on my personal interview mentioning that if 2012 Landa taking LOI but they are taking order in Drupa 2016. They reported receiving orders worth €450 millions. During the interview which also join by Simon the CEO who has 22 years experience with HP. I also quite surprise to learn that Highcon also belong to Landa's venture capital fund, invested in it, and holds a quarter of its capital, Highcon CEO said that they started Highcon 7 years ago as now is the time to change the 150 years old technology from analog to digital. We also have a look on the opportunities of AEC as well as how the trend of Food and Beverage industry in Asia Pacific. On the corrugated industry we cover Sinocorrugated Dongguan which was held last April as well as the Asia Corrugated Association Management meeting where you can see that basically Indonesia has recovered from last year situation though the grow not as high as before, while The tota out-put of Chinese paper products in 2015 is 2 billion US$ or 703.780.000 tons, with 9% yearly growth and the total out-put of corrugated boxes is 403.151.000 tons, with 3.5% yearly growth. The other product that amaze me are EFI. The front end used by 43 manufacturers in Drupa. They doing printing from textile, ceramic, paper, etc. They going very seriously to the corrugated Industry by making the biggest and fast Digital Printing one pass as well as they acquired CTI last year. It is also interesting to see the innovation of the packaging material, especially paper and flexible to help the consumer goods to sell more on volume or gaining more profit. Such as the innovation of Metsa on the Drink Box and during our last seminar in our Packaging Centre Mr Eddy of Buana predicted that in the future will be more and more specific material for each customer to suit specific job. As over material cost margin while less material will cost your reputation. And I wish “Selamat Hari Raya Idul Fitri – Maaf Lahir Batin” Tuti Buntaran-Chief Editor

New HP Indigo Press HP Indigo has launched a narrow web digital label press operating at speeds up to 80m/min (262ft/min) in full color twice that of the best-selling WS6800 with a dual mode in-line or off-line semi-rotary die-cutting unit specially developed by AB Graphic. AB Graphic’s Fast Track semi-rotary die (patent applied for GB1509471.7) has a repeat range of 250-508mm, and is built into a Digicon Series 3 converting line. Fast Track can be configured either in or off-line with the 8000 press. In-line it matches the speed of the 8000, and
in off-line mode reaches speeds up to 150m/min. The first launch under the Pack Ready banner is a lamination system built to the same format as the 20000 flexible packaging press, for the production of high performance applications such as retort pouches. Unique to this system is zero curing time lamination. HP Indigo has developed a resin which allows a laminating film to form an instant and strong bond with the Indigo printed substrate using nip pressure and heat. Commercialization has been set for 2017.
DRUPA 2016
The EFI Nozomi C18000 at EFI's booth at drupa
CORRUGATED PACKAGING HIGHLIGHTS DRUPA DAY 2 One of the surprising themes of drupa 2016 has been the emergence of digital printing for corrugated packaging. Though this market has lagged behind other packaging segments in adopting digital, it appears suppliers are seeing a demand for corrugated to take on the short run capabilities, variability and flexibility that digital has provided elsewhere. Here are a few highlights from the second full day at drupa. EFI Unveils Nozomi The sheer size of this inkjet behemoth has to be seen to be believed, and the EFI Nozomi C18000 was garnering a lot of attention in EFI’s booth. The Nozomi touts its single-pass LED technology and high speed capabilities among its advantages. The Nozomi, which shares its name with one of the fastest trains in Japan, can reach speeds of up to 246 linear feet per minute. Nozomi prints direct-to-board. HP Fills the Gap
A stop at the HP b o o t h shed some further light on the new HP PageWide C500 press, the new direct-to-board solution from HP. The corrugated print market has several
subsegments that HP had already entered, such as short run displays and preprint. Until drupa, the HP lineup had been missing a direct print solution, and it appears the C500 will fill that gap. Screen’s Corrugated Collaboration During its press conference, Screen announced a partnership with BHS Corrugated to develop the BHS Corrugated Inline Digital Printing Solution. The solution can be implemented directly into corrugated box manufacturing facilities, creating a roll to printed sheet process. The solution, which can be integrated into new BHS corrugators or installed onto existing systems, is expected to improve turnaround times, as printing will be integrated inline with the corrugator. It’s interesting to see so many suppliers jumping head on into corrugated. Unlike the label market, where digital has become a highly viable process, corrugated has remained largely conventionally printed. As the technology develops and enters production sites, it will be interesting to see how brands are able to leverage digital in corrugated packaging. But more importantly, the customization and personalization that digital provides will need to resonate with corrugated consumers. - ByCory Francer
China Sales Surge for Landa at Drupa Landa Schließt Großaufträge Mit Chinesischen Käufern ab
Wing Hung has ordered a Landa S10 at Drupa. Wing Hung hat in Düsseldörf eine Landa S10 bestelit.
Landa has claimed to have hit double digit Chinese sales for its sheetfed S10 and W10 web non perfecting Nanographic presses. According to Asia Pacific director of sales Michael Mogridge, the technology is proving so popular in the region it is limiting orders at present to companies with sales of more than 88m (5100m). Huanran Huang, chief excutive of ZRP, the first Chinese
buyer of a Landa S10 press, said : “With innovation close to our heart, the Landa S10 will be a perfect addition to our technology portfolio. For the first time in Asia, we will be able to provide cost effective, short and mid length packaging runs.” Landa has also taken an order from Chinese printer Wing Hung, which plans to move its mid length folding carton work to digital. Landa said it had been approached by approximately 70 to 80 smaller Chinese companies. The first presses will be installed in China in the second part of 2017, 75% of those that have been sold have been S10s. Mogridge added that Landa will also be opening a Chinese operation.

Print packaging software company Hybrid Software has made sold more than 1.2 worth of its cloud based and native PDF products at drupa. A German folding carton pharracentical printer ordered 465,000 worth of Software. Hybrid chief executive Michael Rottenborn said this was Hybrid’s
busisest drupa and staff had given more than 600 customers demos. Hybrid’s new products for drupa include the Packz RoundTrip program, which creates a link between Adobe PDF and Illustrator files, meaning users can open native Illustrator files without going through a PDF.
DRUPA 2016 Many printing companies attended drupa 2016 to understand the latest industry innovations that would increase business and improve profitability. The vendors that participated in this year’s event were focused on demonstrating applications that expanded margins and helped service providers identify new markets and opportunities. According to the event’s exhibitor database, 650 vendors presented more than 2,300 products related to postpress, converting, and packaging. Packaging production was one of six main themes around which drupa was organized, a testament to the steady growth in worldwide demand for packaging and to the opportunities awaiting print service providers equipped to print, finish, and convert packages and labels. Another keynote was the irresistible rise of digital printing, particularly inkjet, for label and packaging printing. Striking here was the extent to which both conventional and digital systems are whittling down the no-man’s-land of run length ranges that used to separate them. Impact (offset and flexo) presses can do small runs economically; non-impact digital presses are cost effective options for big jobs. Each Digital Exhibitors had their own theme, such as : • Canon educated participants on how to #UNLEASHPRINT • HP explored ways to “Reinvent Your Possibilities.” • Xerox highlighted emerging appli-
cations that “Let the Work Flow” • Highcon was talking about “Unleashing the Power of Paper.” Unique Substrates, More Profitability Plastics, metallics, and specialty media were front and center at drupa 2016. The new developments in substrates and digital/offset equipment are making spectacular effects achievable, creating additional opportunities for high-margin applications. A wide range of suppliers demonstrated applications that incorporated synthetics, metallics, clear/frosty clear plastics, metallic foil stamping, holographic stamping, and direct printable magnetic media. These new substrates were designed for nearly all types of suppliers and technologies, ranging from compact 80-ppm machines to very high speed inkjet solutions. Digital Packaging: A Pathway to Profitability and Growth Some are referring to this year’s event as the “packaging drupa.” This is being driven by a number of factors, not the least of which is the fact that so many exciting new technologies in digital printing and finishing of packaging materials have emerged in the past few years. The demand for printed packaging is on

The KOMORI Impremia IS29 is an inkjet printing system capable of printing on a wide range of stocks. By taking advantage of UV inkjet characteristics, this system is ideal for not only commercial print applications, but also package printing. While KBA-Sheetfed has joined forces with XEROX Corporation in America to develop a digital B1 sheetfed press, the KBA VariJET 106 Powered by XEROX, for folding carton printing.
Also being demonstrated on the stand is the innovative B1-size Impremia NS40 digital printing system that uses the new nanotechnology under license from Landa Corp. This new product will perform high-speed printing at 6,500 sheets per hour and is the world’s first B1 inkjet printing system. Drupa 2016 will also be the next chance to see Landa’s B1 offering, the S10, which will ultimately become available in singleand two-sided versions. Landa showed numerous configurations at drupa 2012 but has focused on the B1 format for its first offerings. Providers of UV-inkjet systems for value-added gloss, dimensional, foil, and other special effects already have a history at B1-format. Wider inkjet arrays for packaging and industrial applications are also underway. UTECO-Drupa 2016 With 260 thousand visitors from 88 countries and 1837 exhibitors, D R U P A 2016 was an enormously successful edition, brimming w i t h innovations and impactful impulses for the world printing industry. The increasing quality of the visitors also confirms its success: in spite of the noticeable overall drop in traffic compared to the previous edition (314 thousand in 2012 vs. 260 thousand in 2016): nearly 75% had decisional powers, underlining how those who visited the DRUPA did so with the intention of investing immediately or in the very near future. Despite this overall drop, numbers were instead proportionately more important for the presence of the Uteco group, which during the eleven days of the fair counted approximately 5000 visitors interested in their technologies (5 times the previous edition!) in their own and in other stands with Uteco machinery. The Uteco stand featured a technological layout that
guided visitors through all the printing and converting technologies (flexo, rotogravure, digital, offset, hybrid, coupling, and special coatings) as well as various other innovations studied and developed in the cutting-edge Uteco R&D Centre in collaboration with important technological partners and international institutes and universities. The jewel in the Uteco crown was the brand new Onyx “EcoOne" EB, an integrated and super-compact EB flexo line with 8 colours to develop up to 650 mm with downstream coupling and cutting, presented during two daily demos to capacity audiences. There was also an intense market interest in the new-generation colour element of the NEXT 450 rotogravure. This will be flanked by two more models, beginning with the NXS 300 narrow version for short runs.Another huge success was the collaboration with KODAK, the new Uteco Sapphire Line for digital printing on plastic films, in eptachrome (7 colours) and high-speed overprint painting with in-line water-based inks and paints that, with a maximum speed of 300 m/mn, is suitable for printing on paper and plastic film, up to a width of 400 mm (to be increased in the future-generation Sapphire EVO). During the eleven days of the fair Uteco signed 18 contracts with clients from Europe, America, Asia, and Africa for all the technologies illustrated for a total of about 22 million euro.
PRINTPACK Honored for Technical Innovation by the FPA ATLANTA, March 23, 2016 — The Flexible Packaging Association (FPA) has awarded Printpack a leading manufacturer of flexible and specialty rigid packaging with the Silver Achievement Award for Technical Innovation. The award honors Printpack for its work in solving a challenge that has tested the industry for years applying photochromic ink to a flexible film. The first of its kind packaging application developed by Printpack allows for photochromic ink to be hidden within standard graphics and remain invisible until exposed to sunlight. The innovation having made its debut late last year at PACK EXPO Las Vegas has generated a new packaging category, providing brand owners with a unique way to genuinely interact and engage with their customer base. The application is made possible through a novel and proprietary process invented by Printpack’s Research and Development team. The process allows for the application of photochromic ink on a flexible film while still upholding the integrity of the package design and graphics to the highest standards. The FPA has awarded companies that foster innovation and drive the advancement of the flexible packaging industry since 1956, the same year Printpack was founded. Winners of the 60th Annual FPA Flexible Packaging Achievement Awards were announced on March 1st at an awards ceremony in Naples, Florida. “We are very honored to receive this recognition from the FPA,” states Mark Brogan, Director of Technology and Innovation at Printpack. “It is
truly exemplary of our team’s dedication to innovation and driving the industry forward.” About Printpack Founded in 1956 and headquartered in Atlanta, GA, Printpack is a privately-held manufacturer of flexible and specialty rigid packaging. Employing over 3,200 associates worldwide, the company operates 21 manufacturing facilities in the United States, Mexico and China. By combining our unique insights into consumer preference with advanced technological capabilities, Printpack can heighten brand recognition and help capture market share. Extrusion Coating 101 Extrusion Coating is the coating of a synthetic resin molten strip and extruding it through a flat die on a substrate. Combining two inexpensive materials to make a higher performance product adds value and utility. It is a flexible coating technique used for applying various economic plastics, including polyethylene, on cardboard, corrugated cardboard, paper, alumunium foil, cellulose, nonwoven fabrics, or plastics films. The objective of extrusion coating is to combine the best properties of each material into a third product that can perform a function neither of the individual products can do on their own. Potential value added functionality might be : ● Heat sealability for packaging applications ● Improved tear or crease resistance ● Better barrier properties to water or oxygen and other gases ● Improved appearance ● Additional chemical resistance ● Improved printing or decorating ability In extrusion coating operations often use high melt temperatures to lower the melt viscosity. This improves coating thickness uniformity and adhesion to substrate. Adhesion depends on : ● Resin melt temperature ● Resin viscosity (the reason high temperature are used)
● Film / Substrate compatibility ● Coating speed ● Coating thickness Typically an adhesive is a material that will chemically bond to both surfaces. The adhesive could be the top layer in coextruded film that is compatible with the substrate, producing good adhesion. A water or solvent based adhesive can be applied to the substrate pior to the preheat drum. The substrate can pass through a corona or plasma treatment to allow improved wettability and adhesion of inks, coatings and adhesives. As a result, the materials treated will demonstarte improved printing and coating quality, and stonger lamination strength. Defects in the coating that can render the coated product useless are : ● Voids ● Pinholes ● Thick or thin coating in the machine direction ● Orange peel ● Contamination due to gels or foreign material Voids are caused by poor adhesion between the coating and substrate, where the two materials are not properly bound together. Pinholes are tiny holes in the coating. Pinholes may be caused by excessively high coating speeds that are drawing the polymer melt

Extrusion lamination involves casting the extrudate between two substrate. The extrudate then bonds the substrates together. Such laminates are often then coated on one surface either in-line or via a second pass through the line. Alumunium based structure normally use monolayer coatings to give heat sealibility. Coextrusion is reserved for barrier structures based on EVOH with no alumunium layer or combined bulk/tie layers or bulk/heat seal layers. The major resin used is LDPE. Ionomers are used to give improved heat seal through contamination and higher bond strengths to alumunium. PP coatings give improved heat stability over LDPE. In recent years we have seen increase in use of structures based on barrier layers of EVOH or PA rather aluminum foil in order to reduce recycling problems. - Coffee sachets High gloss lacquer/Paper/LDPE/Al/LDPE/Ionomer. Pressure-Sensitive Label Your labels should have visual appeal to your product, create a recognizable brand in stores, make a strong first impression with your customer and communicate key product information. Your purchase of a unique, eyecatching label is an investment in your product, made to drive sales and connect with your customer Getting that perfect label means balancing a variety of elements to achieve your unique goals. Some of the primary factors include your budget, the quantity of labels you require and how quickly you need your labels. But other elements are just as important, including: •The branded label design you want to achieve. • Your product and how your label is used on it. • How you want your customer to interact with your product. • Regulatory requirements and the information you need on your label. • Unique promotional, retailer or logistics requirements. Depending on your product, your label manufacturer will need to provide solutions for: • Sunlight • Outdoors • Chemical exposure • Temperature • Moisture, condensation and humidity • Any other environmental hazard You can select labels in a variety of different types, including cut and stack glue labels, in-mold labels or shrink sleeve labels to name a few. In this guide, we focus on pressure-sen-
sitive labels, as they make up more than 80 percent of all product labels. Pressure-sensitive labels are a highly versatile label solution that can be seen on nearly any type of product. They’re essentially high-tech stickers that come in rolls or sheets. Pressure-sensitive labels can use paper, film or foil as primary label materials and work with many inks. Since they don’t require any heat, solvent or water to activate, you can apply them to your products with only light or moderate pressure. You’ll peel them off of the roll and press them onto your product using either a machine-applied technique or by hand-applying them. Selecting label die cut A die cut is the shape of your label. You can choose from thousands of different die cuts, from different sized circles, ovals and squares to nearly any shape you can imagine. Your choice of die cut depends on your product, your packaging, the size of your label, the shape of your container and your label design, among other considerations. At Resource Label Group, we have nearly unlimited options for pre-made die cuts and can also create custom die cuts, which can help your label stand out.
Selecting label materials Your next decision involves the material makeup of your label. Pressuresensitive labels are made of four primary parts: • Topcoat • Face stock with printed ink • Adhesive • Liner and release coating Your choice of face material heavily affects both the price and appearance of your label. You can use a variety of papers, films or metal foils. Generally, papers are traditional and less expensive, though there are premium options. Films are more durable solutions and can be treated to stand up to tough environments. Foils are the most premium options and are used for specialty products or by brands looking to stand out with a metallic look. Adding a finish (or topcoat) is one of the last steps in the label process. Not every label requires a specialty finish, but adding one can give your product shelf appeal. You can choose a matte, semi-gloss or gloss finish. While matte finishes add a muted, soft feel that creates a subtle, premium elegance, gloss adds attention-grabbing reflectiveness and is the brightest, most durable finish available. Semi-gloss is a great middleground solution. On the next page, we’ve included a chart

that further explains the different types of label finishes (varnishes and laminates) and shows options for protecting your label and enhancing its design. Once you’ve selected a type of label, the size and design of your label and a quantity of labels, you’ll select a label printing process. Your primary choices are digital and flexographic. Flexographic presses carry higher setup costs than digital presses but provide economies of scale because they use plates to create a set of consistent labels. Once a run is set up, flexographic presses print labels more quickly than digital presses. Digital presses require no setup costs but have a high per-label cost. In small quantities, digital printing saves money, but in large quantities, flexographic is the better choice. There’s no magic number for this cutoff, as it varies from label to label. Even when you only need a small quantity of a label right away, if you purchase one label in bulk over time, flexographic printing may save money in the long run. From a design standpoint, digital printing provides a more crisp finish, clearer colors and sharper type. If you’re running am promotion where you need many label variations, digital printing (using variable data

SIX PACKAGING TRENDS David Luttenberger of The Mintel Group talks to packagePRINTING about current trends impacting the industry. Packaging is a dynamic industry, continually evolving as both technology and consumer demands change over time. To stay relevant, package printers, converters and brands must stay up to date on current trends and keep an eye on potential trends for the future The Gradual Rise of Digital
One trend that should be familiar to printers and converters is the continual rise of digital. However, Luttenberger explains that digital is not skyrocketing to the point where it’s going to become pervasive this year. Instead, he says digital package printing is experiencing an evolution, rather than a revolution. Luttenberger notes that Coca-Cola made a big splash with digital when it launched its Share a Coke campaign. However, smaller brands may see that campaign and think that digital is not for them because they do not have that type of volume or global need. But with a little more education on digital print and decoration technology from converters, Luttenberger says that smaller CPG companies will realize they, too, can reap the benefits of
digital. “It’s not going to be where the light bulb goes on and everybody switches this year,” Luttenberger says. “[But] I think it’s going to be more rapid in 2016 than it has been in the past five years combined.” Clean Eating and Clean Packaging The second trend, Luttenberger says, is the rise of clean labeling. Consumers are more interested in eating healthy than in the past, and label and package printers will need to be able to express the health benefits of a product on its package. The other element of clean labeling is in the packaging design itself. Consumers don’t react to packaging that is cluttered or too flashy, Luttenberger explains. Instead of flooding a label or package with color, tastefully using a “splash” of color keeps a label looking cleaner and not too busy. “Clean labeling, clean graphics and a simple decluttered design principle is working for brands in terms of transparency and equity,” he says. “It’s even beginning to build the power of repurchase from the first time the consumer sees that product.” Flexible Innovation The third trend pertains to flexible packaging. Luttenberger explains that flexible packaging is no longer a differentiator, it has been readily available on the market for some time and consumers are well aware
of itsofpresence. its presence. “Why CAMPBELL is Discontinuing V8 Protein?” Campbell Soup Co. is discontinuing its V8 Protein line of shakes and bars a little over a year after the product range was launched. “Our key learning was that these shakes and bars were not differentiated enough to succeed in a crowded and competitive space,” said Denise Morrison, president and chief executive officer of Camden-based Campbell Soup Co., during the company’s second-quarter earnings call on Feb. 25. Campbell Soup first announced plans for the juice brand’s foray into the fast-growing adult on-the-go nutrition market in July 2014. V8 Protein was part of the company’s answer to a sluggish shelf-stable juice category and continued weakness in its U.S. Beverages business.

How to Use Colour as a Tool in Packaging and Brand Identity Design by Emily Penny, Independent Brand Consultant, Colourful Design Strategy Inspired by the powerful impact colour can have on its audience, we chose Colourful as our business name. For us, it’s a metaphor for the whole brand experience, not just the visual. But just for a moment I do want to dwell on surface colour because it is such an important tool in the branding arsenal – especially when it comes to food. We eat with our eyes, colour being a subliminal indicator of freshness and taste. But there are practical considerations and conventions for packaging design too. So, what do you need to think about, and how can you use colour as an effective tool in branding?
Complementing the product For food brands, one consideration will be the colour of the product. Packaging can reinforce this to identify what’s inside, and get the taste buds going before it’s even on the plate. Black will always be relevant for coffee. Brown for chocolate. Student project XX Via Settembre packaging design by Marius Wathne: enhancing product appearance with a complementary colour scheme.
Honestly Healthy branding and packaging by & Smith: low colour product with high colour labels.
Orange for, er, orange. Product colour can be used as an active part of the palette, and by introducing complementary colours you can accentuate the look of the food. Natural brown and grey foods make for wonderful backdrops for highly coloured elements which in turn can invigourate what might otherwise be a bland-looking product.

mind, it is important to have a ‘hero’ element that can be picked out. Whether this is an image, a shape or type, it should ideally be visible across a room. Conversely, once the pack has caught the customer’s attention, it’s the information that becomes important: what are the product benefits and what is the USP? Packaging design is always a carefully considered exercise in hierarchy; the hero, selling points, and detail must all be present. Using colour in branding With so many practical considerations, where does this leave branding? It’s not enough to produce generic packaging that ‘works’ in a practical sense. Building a brand and developing loyalty comes from marking out your product as different and telling a story. While it will be beneficial to think about all of the above, the precise selection and combination of colours you choose can and should still look unique.
Some brands will adopt a singular brand colour to aid recognition. Alternatively, it might be a distinctive palette that carries with it a mood: warm, cool, soft, or bright. Bear snacks’ colour palette, designed by B&B Studio, identifies it as natural set against the highly saturated colours on the snack food shelves. Part of the value in knowing the conventions is understanding how you choose to break them. Independent and artisan brands will often reject the norm, adopting a bold strategy focused on standing out as something completely new and disruptive. Colour is hugely powerful: both functionally and emotionally. It’s raw and direct. And with infinite nuances of colours and possible combinations, there’s lots to think about. ASIA OPPORTUNITIES :
Asean Economic Community (AEC) Under the Asean Economic Community (AEC), a single regional market of Asean countries has been formed in 2015. The regional integration's objective is to create a competitive market of over 600 million people in Asean countries: Brunei, Cambodia, Indonesia, Laos, Malaysia, Myanmar, the Philippines, Singapore, Thailand, and Vietnam. There will be free flow of goods, services, investment capital and skilled labor following the liberalization. These will include tariff reductions, sreamlining of certain administrative procedures. Even though, according to the Bangkok Post in Thailand, the AEC Scorecard at the moment shows the region behind schedule, having achieved only 73.6% of Phase 1 goals, it still offers a big opportunity in Asia as it will be viewed as a single
large market. Further the integration will help increase Asean competitiveness with China and India. The delayed issues, such as agriculture, non-tariff barriers, integration of the less-developed CLMV (Cambodia, Laos, Myanmar (Burma), Vietnam) members, and financial integration remain to be worked out. According to the US International Trade Commission report on AEC (www.usasean.org/ASEAN/pub4176.pdf), the challenges were seen in the area of importing and exporting which vary widely among Asean members. For example, procedures for trading are relatively easy to complete in Singapore, Thailand, and Malaysia, but very difficult in Laos and Cambodia. The quality of logistics services also varies among the Asean members, such as customs brokerage, freight forwarding, and express delivery.
Logistics services are world-class in Singapore but poor in Laos, Cambodia, and Burma. Benefits of the Asean Economic Community (AEC) • It will open more regional cooperation and will improve the scale efficiencies, dynamism and competitiveness of Asean members. AEC will enable easier movement of goods, services, investment, capital and people. Ultimately, it will offer new ways of coordinating supply chains, or access to new markets for established products. • All Asean countries are more important to foreign investors if they are considered as one mode in a larger regional market of nearly 600 million people - a single market. The Asean Free Trade Agreement will be expanded to zero tariffs on almost all goods. Asean plans to remain engaged with the global economy through regional-level free trade agreements - today, Asean has such agreements with China, Japan, Korea, India, Australia and New Zealand. • The USITC's Asean: Regional Trends in Economic Integration, Export Competitiveness, and Inbound Investment for Selected Industries Report noted that the AEC is coming at a time when it is recognized that
investment in emerging markets is more desirable than in the US and Europe. "There will be no shortage of funding coming from within Asean, the Asia Pacific or even the US and Europe. These investments can bring about badly needed capital for some countries, allowing them to leapfrog from the 20th century into the 21st in terms of competition in mature countries such as Thailand and Malaysia", said the report. • SMEs accounted for 96% of enterprises and between 50-85% of domestic employment across Asean. Integrating these SMEs and supporting them in the inital period will be a challenge throughout ASEAN but particularly in the lesser developed ASEAN countries. Singapore government fully realizes the challenge and the opportunity that the AEC will represent to SMEs and is putting both the planning talent and the resources to better support their SMEs. While Vietnam and Thailand are starting to verbalize and meet to develop more effective plans for SME integration and support, it is obvious that these plans are probably behind where they need to be. In countries, such as Cambodia, Laos and Myanmar (Burma), plans are even further behind and more in

ASIA PASIFIC 2016 “Food And Beverage Industry” Which sectors of the food and beverage industry are likely to drive growth? What can manufacturers expect to see in 2016? The Asia Pacific food and beverage industry is expected to achieve a turnover of US$3.23 trillion in 2016. With a projected year-on-year growth of 11 percent in 2016, the industry will outpace the second and third largest regions—Western Europe and North America—which will see relatively modest expansion rates of two percent and four percent, respectively. China, Japan, and Indonesia are set to rank as the leading food and beverage producers in Asia Pacific in 2016, together accounting for just over three quarters of total turnover. Asia’s Food Drivers: Rice, Oil And Meat Three key categories will account for almost half of Asia Pacific’s US$2.86 trillion food industry turnover in 2016, namely grain mill products, oils and fats, and meat and meat products. Grain mill products will account for nearly one fifth of food industry turnover in 2016 largely, due to rice being the daily staple in most Asian countries and an important export commodity. Vegetable and animal oils and fats will capture an estimated 14 percent share of industry turnover in 2016. Asia Pacific will continue to be the largest global consumer of oils and fats, as Asian consumers’ taste for fried food and thus demand for cooking oils and fats is showing no signs of stopping. Not far behind these three is also the ready meals that includes spices, coffee, and tea, which will account for a 12 percent share of the food
industry turnover in 2016. Production of ready meals and soups will enjoy robust growth in line with increasingly busy lifestyles in metropolitan areas. Healthy Drinks And Booze Govern Beverage Growth Asia Pacific beverage turnover will account for 11 percent of the joint food and beverage industry in 2016 after reaching US$365 billion. In value terms, alcoholic and non-alcoholic drinks will account for nearly equal shares of the industry. Soft drinks expansion will be shaped largely by the health and wellness trend, which will see bottled water, juice, and ready-to-drink (RTD) tea combined account for more than three quarters of domestic volume sales. Moreover, the three categories will see year-on-year growth in high single digits in 2016, matched only by growth in sports and energy drinks. Carbonated drinks will remain the largest segment in soft drinks, accounting for more than one fifth of turnover in 2016, but growing slower than the soft drinks industry.

Other Factors Shaping Food And Beverage Consumption The health and wellness trend will stimulate producers into innovating across the supply chain from processing to packaging in order to provide healthier, tastier, and more attractive food. Asian consumers will be increasingly concerned about the origin and contents of the products they purchase. Moreover, consumers will be willing to purchase more expensive products, such as organic foods, at least occasionally. Overall per capita spending on food and non-alcoholic beverages will grow three percent to US$649 per year during 2016 in Asia Pacific. An increase in spending will be more notable among high-income consumers, who will be more willing to splurge on premium food and beverage products in order to spend less on health care in the future. Increasingly busy lifestyles will be a tailwind for fast food for which domestic players will reap the benefits as Westernisation in foodservice fades. Western fast food staples, such as burgers, chicken, and bakery, will underperform overall fast food growth in 2016, as expansion will be driven by Asian fast food. Throughout Asia Pacific, domestic fast food chains, including small-scale local chains, will expand and attract consumers by offering
high quality fast food and will target suburban areas ignored by multinational fast food chains. Trendsetters and influencers will be increasingly important and shape not just foodservice, but also grocery shopping trends. Moreover, social media will enjoy a growing role as consumers are posting pictures of their food online to reinforce social status. In turn, food producers will have to manage brand image and invest heavily in marketing. This trend will be particularly strong in Asia Pacific’s largest market China— where surveys suggest nearly half the respondents share pictures of their food online on a regular basis, and nearly three quarters admit they are susceptible to celebrity endorsement when buying groceries or choosing a restaurant. Despite growing demand for healthy food and premium beverage products, consumers in Asia Pacific will be price-sensitive as the region’s economic growth is likely to slow down. Therefore, producers will have to find ways to deliver high quality products at affordable prices. For instance, the least developed countries in the region, such as Indonesia and the Philippines, will welcome small single-serving packages that are affordable and attract occasional buyers. Targeted at Millennials Millennials will spend nearly $290 billion on consumer packaged goods by 2020 Marketers have a tremendous opportunity to capture growth by directly connecting with this increasingly important segment of the population. • Concerned Aspirationalists, who represent 13% of millennials and are cash and time-strapped moms driven by convenience and price and devoted to social media; • Conscious Naturalists, the 15% of millennials who are environmentally conscious moms who prefer locally grown and minimally processed foods, are cautious with money and less reliant on technology; and • Confident Connectors, the 17% of millennials who are ethnically diverse, socially conscious, digitally savvy and drawn to specialty stores. “Millennials are the most racially diverse, highly educated generation in history,” Mr. Tomei said. “Their path to purchase isn’t a straight line, so marketers need to keep this in mind and get creative. This means paying attention to their specific needs, ensuring they have the right product mix and customizing their media and messages to be relevant to those needs.”

The trend : companies consolidation while government policies start to save companies and lower insurance companies Malaysia Mr Alex Soon (MACCMA) presented the update of Malaysia’s corrugated industry. Malaysia GDP growth set to slow to 4.5% in 2016. Performance of industrial production index for the period January to February 2016 : expanded by 3.5% as compared to the same period of the previous year. The expansion was supported by the increase of 3 indices : Manufactuing (4.2%), Mining (0.9%) and Electricity (9%) Based on the statistics form the IMF – World Economic Outlook Database, Malaysia’s total GDP amounted to US$ 813.5 billion in 2015. CHINA’s Recovered Paper Import “ Demand Over the Next Five Years: Don’t Get Your Hopes Up ” After falling continuously in 2013 and 2014, Chinese recovered paper imports rebounded by about 6% from 27.5 million metric tons in 2014 to 29 million metric tons in 2015, just slightly less than the peak level of 30 million metric tons in 2012. More than 55% of the import increase came from Western Europe, while the United States accounted for only 20% of China’s import growth. The weak euro relative to the U.S. dollar and the port congestion issues on the U.S. West Coast during late 2014 and early 2015 helped promote Chinese import demand from Western Europe, especially for the first three quarters of the year. China’s imports from most, if not all, of its Western European trading partners grew significantly in 2015. Increased purchases from China put additional pressure on the already tight demand/supply balance in the European recovered paper markets and helped hold the European markets stronger relative to the U.S. As for China’s import gains from the U.S., which were most noticeable in the second half of 2015, we believe that these were partly due to the low import prices for U.S. recovered paper relative to domestically collected grades during that period.
For instance, while the import prices for U.S. OCC dropped by $11/metric ton in the fourth quarter, the price for domestically collected post-consumer OCC rose by RMB 70/metric ton (U.S. $11/metric ton). The rebound in Chinese imports was somewhat of a surprise to many people, given the further slowing of the nation’s economic growth and the lackluster paper and board markets in 2015. According to our latest estimate, Chinese recovered paper consumption expanded by about 1.4 million metric tons in 2015, with most of the demand growth being met by imports. Chinese domestic recovered paper collection volume, however, was estimated to have shown no increase in 2015 after growing by about 10% or 2.7 million metric tons per year on average in 2002-2014. This was the first time since 2002 that domestic collection did not increase year-over-year. The paper recovery rate, therefore, remained unchanged at an estimated 46% in 2014 and 2015 after rising significantly from 32% in 2002 to 45% in 2013. Increasing collection and processing costs, including labor costs, the relatively low prices for recovered paper, and the lack of effective

support or guidance from the government combined to slow the development of the paper recycling business in China. According to the China Resource Recycling Association, in recent years about 20% of the resource recycling labor force left the business, including the paper recycling sector, and the volume of collected and recovered waste material slipped. As a result, after holding stable for about 10 years, the volume of waste that went to landfills increased continuously in 2014 and 2015 and caused many issues in China’s cities and rural areas. Looking ahead, we expect to see an improvement in Chinese domestic collection supported by different factors, such as the increase of paper and board products consumed and circulated inside China as its economic growth becomes more domestic consumption-driven; the recovering paper and board business on a worldwide basis; the limited increase or even reduction in recovered paper supply surplus in the major exporting regions, such as Western Europe and Japan; the growing import demand from other emerging countries in Asia; and the potential support for the resource recycling business from the government. The likely increase in control of both the quality and quantity of recovered paper imports, and the improved quality of domestic collected grades, may also encourage paper mills to utilize more domestic grades, and thus
help the domestic paper recycling business somewhat. Consequently, we think the Chinese import rebound that began in 2015 will not last long. Suppliers in the exporting regions should probably not get their hopes up for a continuation over the next five years of the strong Chinese demand that they saw in 2015. China will certainly continue to buy a huge amount of recovered paper overseas, but the net import volume is predicted to decline gradually together with the nation’s slowing recovered paper demand growth and the improvement of its domestic collection. Nevertheless, China will still play a key role in the world recovered paper markets, and we should continue to keep a close eye on developments there. Meanwhile, some attention should also be given to other emerging recovered paper buyers in Asia, such as India and Vietnam, who are expected to import more recovered paper to fulfill their fairly strong demand. Metsä Board’s Elevated Drink Box Design to be Launched at Drupa
Metsä Board, part of Metsä Group, will demonstrate an innovative new beverage concept for the first time at Drupa 2016. The ‘Elevated drink box’ (EDB), designed and patented by Metsä Board, is an easy and convenient way for consumers to enjoy beverages. The box was produced by combining the expertise of Metsä Board, BOBST, Kodak, Marbach, Henkel, and Knauer. Cyril Drouet, Metsä Board’s Design and Innovation Director explains: “Our aim was to completely re-think the concept and design user-friendly packaging with real benefits for the
consumer and the brand. Thanks to our elevated base design, the box doesn’t have to be placed on the edge of a table anymore, which gives the consumer the freedom to use this packaging anywhere.” The box does not take up additional shelf space in-store as the elevated base is inside the packaging, ready for assembly by the consumer before use. When empty, the plastic bag is easily removed from the box, helping with material separation for recycling. The fresh forest fibre paperboards used in the packaging are manufactured by Metsä Board.

Recently, the reporter from Reed Exhibitions interviewed Mr. Gary W.Tseng, Chairman of the Board and the founder of ETERNA. From the interview with Mr. Gary W.Tseng, we can see his commitment to ETERNA’s philosophy through his emphasis on efficiency and productivity management under changing market environment.
ETERNA became one of the partners with these three companies and
According to Mr. Gary W.Tseng’s analysis, currently only 10% of Chinese enterprises occupies top position in first-class segment, in comparison, more than 70% of the enter-
prises in America have achieved first-class status. Under these competitive market conditions, Chinese companies must improve productivity to remain competitiveness by mean of strengthening their vendor management systems, reducing costs, and ensuring that trade partnerships are mutually beneficial. There are two focuses in ETERNA: productivity and management. First, to improve productivity, the focus is to leverage resources and reduce costs. Secondly is ETERNA’s close attention on management, such as motivating employees and training them to be more initiative. ETERNA wants to incorporate the voices of their employees by rejecting the bureaucratic style of top-down management, and also ETERNA aims to empower employees with inclusive brainstorm, all employees have a sense of achievement and a sense of responsibility in their mindset in order to reduce costs, this is a common goal between employees and the company. " As leader in the industry, do you have any suggestions for small and medium enterprises?" the reporter
asked. Mr. Gary W.Tseng explained: “The market barrier of this industry was not very high in past years, after many manufacturers had entered the market and made money, there was a common mode to expand rapidly, make more money, and expand rapidly even more, however, the companies that rapidly expanded ignored many opportunities to be efficient. Now, we are seeking method to improve all production processes by optimizing the utilization of resources so as to improve production and management efficiency. Eight or nine years ago, I had predicted the tough economic conditions that China is experiencing today, similar to the economic downturn experienced by Asia's four little dragon countries. We can use the experience in past to help us understand our current market situation. The most important thing in business is to determine, to have a long-term view, to always make decisions for the future, and to prepare for the next five to ten years. By doing this, when that time comes, no matter what kind of market situation we will
