Teens! You Can Make Your Own Money
You don’t have to wait around for your allowance in order to have cash in your pockets. You don’t have to be the person among your friends who can’t participate in an event or go shopping because of lack of funds. You can make your own money! I am about to reveal 10 of the best methods teens can use to earn some extra cash. Note: With some of the methods, advertising yourself or getting clients will be the key to making money, so I will also include a section that gives teens tips on advertising their services or offers.
2
Method 1 - Odd Jobs
Doing a little hard labor can always help a teen earn some extra side money if.... 1) The teen has the skills and resources to get the job done. AND... 2) The teen knows people who are willing to pay them to get the job done. Here are a few odd jobs that people are often willing to pay others to do for them. • • • • • • •
Shovel snow Rake up leaves Mow the lawn Help with gardening Scoop up poop in yards Paint (Houses, fences, etc.) Wash cars
3
Method 2 -Baby Sitting
If you know you got what it takes to watch and care for a baby or small child, try out babysitting. Lots of folks need reliable babysitters. If you know anyone who could use a babysitter, reach out to them. Alternatively, you could just advertise your babysitting service. Make sure that you take this job seriously and act mature. Tip: Babysit for one of your friends or family members for free and use them as references when you start trying to get paid babysitting opportunities. Previous experience will look good when trying to get new clients.

Method 3 - Pet Sitting & Pet Walking
Pet sitting and walking is a job that is in high demand. So many people have pets nowadays and not all of them can be there 24/7 to care for them. This is why pet services like pet walking and sitting are pretty popular. If you are good at grooming a pet, you may even be able to get into pet grooming and make some extra money.
Method 4 – Tutoring
5
Do you excel in a certain subject in school? If you do, you can use this as an opportunity to make some extra cash. Find out if there are any tutoring opportunities available at your school. If not, find out if any of your schoolmates or friends needs tutoring. If that fails, you could always just advertise your tutoring services locally. And don’t limit yourself to helping people with school related subjects. If you are an expert in another area, you may be able to make money off of your expertise. Here are a few things that people can teach others how to do and make some money in the process. • • • • • • •
Play an instrument Build a website Learn a new language Cook or bake Improve in a sport Create graphics Use a computer or specific software program
Method 5 - Do Work Around The Home
6
You don't necessarily have to work outside the home. Ask your parents if there are jobs that they would be willing to pay you to do. Don't expect to get paid to clean your room. You probably won't be paid to do the things that you are supposed to do. However, you may be able to get paid for things that they should do but don't have time to do like cleaning out the garage, cleaning the pool, cleaning up the yard, and so on.
Method 6 - Sell Some Stuff
The possibilities are endless when it comes to selling things for cash. Teenagers could sell all sorts of stuff and make some extra pocket money. However, you should make sure that the items are yours to sell or you get permission to sell the items if they do not belong to you. Below, you will find some ideas of things you could sell. • • • • • • •
Video Games CDs/DVDs Old Toys Old Cell Phones Clothes/Shoes Crafts (Paintings, jewelry, etc.) Electronic Gadgets (Ipods, MP3 Players, etc.)
7
You should be able to find stuff to sell in your attic, basement, or closet. If you don't have stuff to sell, get creative. Start making stuff that you think you may be able to sell. Once you have stuff to sale, you can do a yard sale, inform friends of what you are selling, post some ads on Craigslist or sell some of the things on eBay.
Method 7 - Fix Something
Are you a teen that has a knack for fixing things? If so, you can possibly make some money. Can you fix a broken iPod? Can you get rid of Xbox 360 errors? Can you fix a bike? Can you get the toilet unclogged? Can you get rid of a virus from a computer? There are plenty of people who need things fixed or repaired. Search Craigslist and look in the "Gigs" area. You may be able to find some listings where people need something fixed.
8
Instead of looking for people who might need your talent on Craigslist, you could just post an ad in the services section telling people that you can fix whatever it is that you can fix. It doesn't end with Craigslist. Pass along the word, put up some flyers, set up a booth, or pass out some business cards.
Method 8 - Participate on GPT Sites Notice to all Teens: You don't have to limit yourself to offline gigs! There many teens making extra cash online. One way that they do this is by participating on GPT sites, also known as Get Paid To websites. These websites pay you to complete offers, fill out surveys, watch videos, search the web, and more. Many GPT sites accepts members age 13 and up BUT you will need your parents permission if you want to sign up to these sites. Oh and did I mention that this is completely free. You can learn more about this opportunity by downloading the free guide I have written: How to Earn Free Cash With GPT Sites
Method 9 - Take Online Surveys
9
This is another way for teens to make money online for free. Get paid to voice your opinion! Many companies need teens' opinions to help shape and mold new products and services AND they are willing to pay for them. All the teen has to do to make money is take surveys. Sign up to legitimate survey panels, take surveys, and get paid. It involves no hard labor at all and can be done at home at any time. If this is something that interests you, check out this list of legitimate paid surveys for teens.
Method 10- Get a Part Time Job
When all else fails, you could always try to get a regular part time job. There are plenty of teen jobs out there. Try to land a paper route (passing out newspapers). Wash dishes in a restaurant. Flip burgers or work the cashier. Bag some groceries.
10
To search for part-time jobs in the area, check out your local newspaper or look online. Snag-a-Job is a good website to find teen jobs. Warning: Make sure that you don't put work before your education. It's nice to be able to earn some extra cash but when you are spending more time working than doing homework and studying, it can become an issue. You don't want to be stuck flipping burgers because you failed your college exams right?
Advertising Your Gigs If you don't know people that can take you up on your offers, you are stuck unless you get out and advertise what you are offering. In this section, you will learn a few ways to get the word out about your service or products for sale. Family & Friends - Reach out to family members and friends and see if they would like to take you up on your offer(s). This should be your starting point. Business Cards - Print out some business cards with your phone number and/or email address and mention briefly what you are offering. Make sure that your offer is bold and big. Example "Affordable Babysitting", "Computer Repair Service", "Video Games For Sale" Flyers - With flyers, you have more space to talk about what you have to offer. Make a catchy headline and make sure that you describe your offer well and include contact details. Once you are done, pass them out in your neighborhood or put them on bulletin boards. NEVER PUT FLYERS IN MAILBOXES. It's illegal in the US. Local Classified Ad - If you can invest some money to get things going for you, why not place an ad in your local paper.
11
Online Classified Ad - Post a list on classified sites like Craigslist and BackPage. Make sure that you post your service in the appropriate categories. If you are selling something, list the items in the proper category and include as much details as possible about the item. Bumper Sticker - Create a simple bumper sticker advertising what you are offering and put it on your parents car if they allow it. Referrals - If you do great work, there is a chance that the people you work for will refer you to their friends and family members. So, whatever you do, do it as best as you can. You never know - it could lead to way more work and referrals.
Tips & Warnings The methods that you have learned so far do work but you still need to be cautious and educate yourself more about a particular method if you plan to pursue it. Here are a few tips and warnings when making money as a teen in no particular order.
Tips * Let people try out your service before charging them. For example, if you are teaching someone how to play an instrument, offer the first lesson free. This may entice them to take you up on your offer. * Be presentable and mature when engaging with potential or current customers. * Get advice from your parents. Don't be afraid to ask them for advice. They know a lot more than you and could probably offer tips to boost your earning potential greatly. They may even offer to help you get started.
12
* Before you start selling stuff or offering a service, be prepared! Know how much you will charge, when you expect to be paid, how you want to be paid, and so on. Be prepared to answer questions that your potential customers may have. * Don't be afraid to accept smaller gigs. You may not want to be paid $15 a week for washing cars but the money can add after a while. You never know - someone may pay you more than what you normally make or business can increase.
Warnings * If you are dealing with a stranger, have your parent or another adult that you trust accompany you. * Selling in some areas may be illegal or frowned upon. School is one example. So, make sure that you take the time to learn where it is okay to sell things if you plan to sell something. * Be aware of the work laws in your area so that you don't get into trouble.
Bonus Method: Google Adsense
You may not have liked the 10th method. Some teens find out that they are not able to land a real part time job due to the laws of their state or country. This is one of the main reasons why teens search for other ways to make money.
13
So, I wanted to tell you about another possible way to make money - Google Adsense. In order for this to work, you will need to get your parent to sign up for a Google Adsense account on your behalf. If you are under 18, you can’t participate in the Google Adsense program but your parent can. Any money earned through Google Adsense will be sent to your parents but your parent shouldn’t have any problem handing over the money you worked hard for. So, here are two routes you can take to start earning some money with Google Adsense.
Blogging Start a blog (Blogger.com is a free platform you can use) and then start monetizing it with Adsense once you get good traffic coming to it. I would recommend getting your parent to sign up for the Google Adsense program once your blog has been established and getting some traffic. When your blog is ready for monetization, you can have your parent submit the Google Adsense application, making sure that they use your blog address in the application. (A website is required when filling out the application.) Hopefully your parent will get approved for the account. If they do, they can place the ad snippets on your blog and whenever someone clicks on an ad on your blog, you will make some money.
Videos With this method, you would post videos on Youtube. Your goal is to get many views to your YouTube videos. Once you start getting some decent views to your videos, you should have the option of enabling monetization for your videos through Google Adsense. This allows ads to show up on your videos. If someone clicks the ads on your videos, you will make money. 14
The YouTube account needs to be associated with a Google Adsense account so your parent needs to sign up for Google Adsense in order for this method to work. Click Here to learn more about the YouTube Partner program Here is what I recommend you do to get started with either of these methods. 1. Learn more about Google Adsense. You can do so by visiting this link. 2. Talk to your parent about your interest in making money through Google Adsense. Point them to the Google Adsense main page and let them look over it. Once they have looked into it and you have explained how it works, ask your parent if they could create an account once you have everything ready (your website/blog). 3. If they agree, create a website or blog and start driving traffic to it. 4. Once your blog or website is created, have your parent fill out the application. 5. If it gets approved, explain to your parent how they can add the ads onto your website or enable monetization on your YouTube videos if you chose to go this route. Don’t like this idea? Here are a few more. • • • • • • •
Be an extra in a movie Take photos and sell them online Write articles for money Clean out foreclosed homes Pass out flyers for local businesses Become a lifeguard Work for the elderly in your neighborhood
