Let your pain be your fuel.

Letter from the Editor

This year, I have decided not to make a single resolution. Instead, I've changed to being more GOAL oriented. One of my goals is to help create a THRIVING, worldwide community of entrepreneurs connected by a single goal: to make this world a better place. Last year, I lost a very dear Cousin, Carrie Estelle Purdie, unexpectedly, and that shifted me to some dark places, places where there was very little hope. Only my faith in God and support from my sisters in Christ and my Mom kept me from giving in completely to despair. The only good thing about the situation is that it has regalvanized my sense of purpose. My success is no longer just about me. Success is about being able to help provide for my little cousins. It is about being able to spoil my Mom with some amazing trips and other things she deserves. It is about being able to seed into my family, friends, church and the global community. It is about working together to achieve some BIG GOALS! In fact, that's how Peri Boss Ladies was born. We are all focused, dedicated sisters of faith who believe in God, encouraging each other, leaving a legacy and building something bigger than ourselves. Thank you for taking the journey with us.

Renée

Planning with Twanna Ray Every time I look around, I see a planner ... a brandnew, shiny Happy Planner; a brandnew, shiny Erin Condren LifePlanner; Michael’s new Recollections and so forth ... but do you really NEED a planner? Can’t one of those things from Dollar General or even the Dollar Tree suffice? Maybe, but they sure aren’t as pretty, huh? Well, in the grand scheme of things, the business and the worldwide planner industry is booming and everybody’s got to have one or two or ten. You can get them in all different shapes and sizes and all different colors and patterns. You can get them with a vertical layout or horizontal layout. You can get a planner anywhere from 6 months to 24 months. Depending on what you need and what you’re going to use it for, you can get a daybyday layout, or a month to month layout or an hourbyhour layout! There are planners just for decorating. There are planners that are more functional. There are planners for teachers and the latest thing, gratitude planners, which so many people, whether they have a belief or faith or not, are buying by the bundles for themselves and their daughters and their husbands and their aunties and everybody in between. Without a doubt, planners are in and it seems like they’re here to stay. I’ve met a few women on Facebook that have been using planners for years. I used to think that planners were only for business women or businessmen because those are the only people I would see in Staples or Office Depot that were purchasing them. So I used to get mine from the regular office supply store and come home and try to dress them up with colored markers and so forth, but it just didn’t seem to help.

In short, I was bored out of my mind so I tried to come up with ways to make my planner as pretty as possible, but the truth of the matter is it just wasn’t working because I had not yet been shown the light. One day I was searching Pinterest, YouTube and Instagram, and I found a miracle. I found out that other planners existed! No longer was I bound to use the DayTimer planners or student planners from the Dollar General. There was a whole new world out there and I was about to EMBARK. I started visiting more stores and searching online wondering, “Do I have to order them and wait for them to come in the mail or can I just go to a store?” Then somebody told me about Hobby Lobby and that began a whole ’nother addiction. I’m a very creative person and I love arts and crafts. When I walked into Hobby Lobby, my jaw dropped and I didn’t know which way to go. To the left of me was everything marked 40% off and under and I lost my mind. To the right of me were flowers and fabrics and everything in between to make them come to life. Straight ahead of me were paints and paint brushes and smocks and pencils and canvases and … oh my goodness the list goes on and on. Literally, I didn’t know which way to go, but it didn’t seem like anyone was there to ask. Where was the help?!?! So I decided to take a deep breath, walk straight forward, hopefully without bumping into anyone, and keep my eyes wide open so I could see everything around me. It was like that every time until one day I asked one of the salespeople if they sold something called “happy planners.” Her face lit up and she said, “Yes! So I’ll take you to the ones we have in kits as well as the ones we have already put together … but they’re not as fun.” My face lit up!!! I was giddy. I was running behind her like a little school child, and then I saw IT for the first time ever in real life. I was starstruck. I think I even felt a little perspiration. I was in awe of this little miracle call the Classic Happy Planner and there began this thing called “planner peace.” For all of 2016, I researched and played with the one Classic Happy Planner. I never knew that a larger one existed and a smaller one was on the way! But as soon as I found out, I HAD to go and claim those too. So, a few months ago, before 2017 arrived, I decided to go hunting for the extralarge, jumbo, HUGE Happy Planner.

I brought it home. I laid it down on my desk and wondered, “What am I going to do with it?” And then it dawned on me … I had to go buy it stickers because it has to have a weekly spread. What is a spread you ask? Well, in short, it is a group of stickers that all have one theme in color and possibly character, and you take them and you disperse them on your weekly view in your planner. If you own a Happy Planner, you know that you can remove the pages and put them back in place very easily. This makes it easy, especially if you are righthanded and the middle is in your way. The one thing I know for sure though is that planners do help you in business and ministry and your personal life. Planners help you keep all of the kid’s soccer games and piano recitals all mapped out. Planners help you schedule your daytoday work projects as well as home projects. They also help people in ministry or in the public eye keep their bookings in order. For some people, planners are like little pursesized personal assistants. They hold telephone numbers and logins to specific websites, your favorite Scriptures, your mostused recipes, motivation, your vision board and everything else in between. I bet you never thought having a planner could be so exciting, huh? I could go on and on about the glorious Happy Planner and all of her little buddies that I purchased for 2017, but I need to stop writing and go bond with my planners. Of course, if you watch me on YouTube or Periscope, you can find out what happens next in Twanna, Plannerville USA. Until then, happy planning!

Enduring Unforeseen Illness by Devon Goods This article may not apply to you. In fact, I hope it doesn't. However, you probably know someone who could benefit from reading it. The purpose of this article is to help motivate you to live beyond whatever diagnosis you have just received. It’s also to ensure that just because you have that illness does not mean your illness has you! We hear all the time that the mind is a battlefield, which is completely true. For that reason, my goal is to help you tackle your sickness by creating an undefeatable mindset to ensure you are an overcomer and that you have the last sayso on how you want to live your life. How will I do this and make it 100% easy for you? I am going to use the 5 Ws and 1H to help me. So, let’s get ready to jump into the meat of this. The 5 Ws and 1H are a series of questions whose answers are considered basic in information gathering or problem solving. • What happened? • Who is involved? • Where did it take place? • When did it take place? • Why did it happen? • How did it happen? Now let’s take this same formula and make it more fitting to your current situation. • What can I change? • Who should I get better for? • Where can I go for help? • When should I change my mindset? • Why should I fight through this Illness? • How can I find peace in my illness? There are plenty of things that you can and may even have to change such as your diet when first diagnosed with any illness. The main thing that you must change though in order to win is your mindset. Your mind is where life’s battles will be won or lost. The more negativity we feed ourselves, the more negativity we bring into our lives. The more we focus on our limitations due to our illnesses, the more limited we are. We must train our mind to feel how we want to feel and to do what we want it to do. No one is going to take care of you like you can. Now this doesn’t mean you should not allow the doctor to do their job or your loved ones to help you. It just means that when you are hit with a diagnosis, your only concern at that moment should be you.

Our lives take a complete turn when sickness happens. You may have found yourself recently rethinking your finances, living arrangements and more; however, do any of these things matter if we aren’t healthy enough to carry them out? Gaining your strength back and recuperating are what’s most important and because stress is a major trigger to many illnesses, we simply cannot afford to worry over things that we can’t fix. So, you’ve just received the diagnosis and if your doctor is anything like mine, you’ve also received information on websites and support groups to join with hopes of connecting with people who have the same illness as you. That is not a bad thing and it can honestly help you with coping. With that said, observe the conversations going on in the group before diving in. Bear in mind that all support groups are NOT good for you. And if you are not ready to join a support group in the beginning, I advise you not to be pressured to jump out there until you are ready. I know this will not always be easy. I understand that there will be times when you’ll sit and question why you or if you’ll have to endure pain for the rest of your life. However, one thing that I do know is someone is ALWAYS in a worse situation than you. Did you ever stop to think that the reason you are going through this illness is to help someone else? There is someone waiting to hear and be delivered by YOUR story. What do I mean by this? Think about that parent of a child with a disability … Do you know how many babies are born with illnesses every day? What if even one parent decided to share how they have made it through despite their situation? How many lives do you think they could change? Finding peace within your illness begins once you have accepted the fact that you have a diagnosis, understand this is something you may have to live with for the rest of your life and lastly, decide to live beyond your diagnosis. The mental transformation process isn’t easy, and it isn’t overnight, but it is vital in order to live your best life and move forward. Instead of bemoaning the cards you were dealt, change the game and WIN!

I'm an Estate Planning Coach who helps women in business create generational wealth and leave a legacy through estate and business succession planning. Although I'm not an attorney, I provide a solution and give you access to a toprated estate planning attorney in your state or province to execute your estate plan. My upcoming ebook will cover my stories and experiences with updating my Will using a wellknown legal company. An estate plan is the process by which you name the Executor of your Will. They are the person authorized to distribute your assets to your heirs.

A business succession plan is where you state how your business will operate and who will operate it should you become incapacitated or die. I advise clients to update their Will when a life event occurs such as a new baby, marriage, buying a house, taking on a new debt, etc. Through our monthly service, you'll have access to updating your estate plan yearly for free. An estate plan, including standard Will preparation, Living Will and Healthcare Power of Attorney could cost from $1,200 to $2,400 depending on where you live in the United States and the type of documents you have created. My program is less than $20/month and your estate plan is included. The first time I updated my Will was back in 2010 when a major life event occurred, the purchase of my first home in Arizona at the age of 27. I consulted with my attorneys throughout the entire process of reviewing contracts, legal documents and mortgage documents. They assisted me with negotiations and what costs I shouldn't have to cover. Also, there was no downpayment! After the closing, I requested a Will questionnaire and updated it to add my home. A home is an asset and an investment. I wanted to keep it in my family if I were to die. This should give you an idea of how invaluable having an estate plan is to you and your family. More information will be shared in my upcoming ebook: When You Should Update Your Will.

What story is your brand telling? by Renée Purdie When you hear BRAND, you probably think of big names such as Oprah and Coke. There was a time though when people would have said, "What's an Oprah?" My point is, all of our brands start somewhere. As we run, not walk, into 2017, there are so many amazing ways you can brand yourself. I could write a book on that, and may someday, but this article should get you started. For those of you who have already started building your brand, this is the PERFECT time to do a brand audit (or hire a professional to do it; shameless plug!) In the meantime, here are some essential steps: 1. Walk through your social media channels and everything else to see what others see when they visit your social media sites, your website, etc. 2. Create an ideal client sheet. Really get to know them. If you have no idea who you're speaking to, your social media, website, etc. will never be on point. 3. Don't forget your offline presence! Consider the following: • Do you have a fabulous logo? • Are your business cards giving the WOW factor? What do they look and feel like? • If you don't have electronic letterhead, create some! Then you can send professional proposals.

Chef Chàron's Corner There is something about the winter that I love. When it’s cold, wet and windy, there is so much one can do, being a cook. We all know that food is comforting. It transcends, reminds and influences us to cook certain dishes. This is how I figure out what to cook and what to bake. As the seasons come and go, winter is one season that seems like it goes on forever. It’s like the cold doesn’t stop and folks are crying out for summer! For me, I feel as if I’m in my element. I get excited to cook a stew, a soup, pile on the mashed potatoes and bring on the meat! You know like a “where’s the beef” type of situation! This winter, I started playing around with sweet potatoes. They are not foreign to me; I just want to play. I love to use ingredients in different ways. For instance, I choose different techniques that will enhance flavor as well as the nutrients in foods. It is like playing one of my favorite cooking games in my house. So far this winter I have had an amazing time exploring the most delicious foods I can get here on the west coast. With all of my experimenting, I have come to one conclusion, I just love sweet potatoes and let me tell you why. They are the most nutritious root vegetable in the produce section. Sweet potatoes are universal and they can be used in many ways. They can be mashed, broiled, baked, candied, sautéed or roasted. Why do YOU want to use sweet potatoes? I can answer that for you! You’ve exhausted all of your ideas on other potatoes, like fingerlings, Yukon gold and red potatoes so you need a new and improved recipe or a new idea on how to make these potatoes sing of their goodness. I have the perfect recipe for you ...

Chef Chàron's Corner It’s simple yet elegant and the taste is phenomenal! Your family will ask, “May I have those potatoes again Mom, those yam, sweet potatoes…” As you can tell, I have experience with this request! Roasted Root Vegetables Ingredients • 23 red potatoes, diced • 1 large sweet potato, diced • 1 medium onion, diced • 1 celery stalk, chopped • 2 carrots, chopped in rounds • 1 teaspoon dried thyme • 2 bay leaves • 2 tablespoons oil • 3 tablespoons butter, diced • Salt and pepper to taste Method Preheat oven to 400 degrees. Put all ingredients in 9x13 Pyrex or a cookie sheet. Sprinkle thyme on top of the root vegetables, drizzle the oil on top and season with salt and pepper to taste. Mix everything together so that all of the vegetables are coated with the oil and thyme. Add the salt and pepper and top with the butter. Roast for 3035 minutes or until the potatoes are fork tender. Serve alongside some roasted chicken and steam some broccoli to round out your meal. Enjoy!

TIPS

by Qiana Treadwell Love is something we are born with. It’s instinctual; it’s infinite and it’s free … Love your child fully—without fear, without judgements (of yourself or others) and without conditions. Love them with abandon! Your child is NOT aware of your past and has NONE of your “hangups” or issues so don’t impose them on your child. As adults, we have experienced many things, good and bad. We want to “save our child the trouble,” but they live in a totally different world. They have their OWN mind and their OWN way of thinking. They have us thinking a little more clearly about them, supporting them and their decisions. Just CONSIDER that because of these factors, they may have a totally different and more favorable outcome than we once had. Let them try new things! Who knows what could happen? 1. None of us are perfect parents, but God chose us, HANDPICKED us, for the child that we’ve conceived, carried, birthed and begun to raise! If there was another plan, the child would not be here, so … first, begin by reveling in THAT! We were CHOSEN and GIFTED and TRUSTED with another LIFE!!! WOW!!! Let THAT sink in. Let THAT marinate! You don’t have to try to impress your child or anyone else. Your baby isn’t expecting anything but basic care and unconditional love and attention from you. Just love them and give them your best. I assure you, it’s good enough.

2. Although there are others with children and it’s wonderful to get advice and guidance from others … remember that the BEST teacher is YOUR CHILD. Study your child; get to know them; learn their personality, their moods and their “language”. Before babies are able to speak, they have a way of communicating with their fulltime caregiver (notice I did NOT say birthparent). The individual that gives fulltime care to the child is the one who best knows the little one’s “language.” This person will know each cry or sound and what it means—soiled diaper = highpitched squeal; hungry = consistent, low whine, and so on for sleepy, hot, lonely, angry, sad, etc. In addition to that, use your instincts; no one knows your little one better than you do. Trust yourself and your relationship; you’re learning each other. 3. We are in the age of technology. EVERYTHING is recorded, photographed and “live streamed.” Don’t forget to enjoy each moment and be PRESENT in the moment. It’s great to capture moments, but don’t get so caught up in catching the perfect shot, the best pose or greatest location. Go ahead and capture the moment, then turn the device OFF or at LEAST put it down! Be with your child(ren), family and friends. Take in these moments. Time flies. Children grow up so quickly. The moments are fleeting and very precious. Once they’re gone, you can’t get them back. Be in the moment. 4. As your little one grows and gets older, they will want to stretch their “wings” more, be more independent, venture out, make friends, become their own person. They WILL test boundaries with themselves, you and authority. Don’t be surprised; be prepared! I struggled in this area. I wanted my baby to ask questions because I didn’t want her to just follow blindly; HOWEVER, when I said the conversation was over or I’m done or just “because I said so,” that needed to be the end of it! I wanted her to understand that for every action there is a reaction and/or consequence, positive or negative and sometimes BOTH. If you notice an issue with your child, step in and try to stop/resolve it before it gets out of hand. Just remember, set boundaries, set consequences and follow through. Following through is the most important aspect! Following through teaches your child not only how to respect you, but it teaches your child that they can TRUST you. It teaches them that you have integrity and you mean what you say. Your child NEEDS to see and hear this from you for BOTH your benefit.

5. Dreams! You have YOUR dreams AND your child has THEIRS. Know the difference! This is another big one! I’ve been a child whose parent attempted to live vicariously through me with HER dreams. She dreamed of being a concert pianist —I dreamed of being a ballerina. She dreamed of becoming a spelling bee champion and meeting the president of the United States. I won, but I wanted to be part of the drama team. My Mom forgot about my dreams, but I’m CERTAIN it wasn’t intentional. Don’t forget your little one’s dreams and don’t give up on your own. It IS possible to have both. There is room for all of us to chase our dreams, so why not encourage each other and do it together? I believe that it is a beautiful thing for a child to see their parent is excited about setting goals and achieving them. It shows them that it is good to have goals, work hard and that it’s possible to attain them. Essentially, we need to remember that our children are watching us and therefore, we have to be very careful about what we are showing them. It is so much more than leading by example. Remember that what you are showing your child(ren) is how they will pattern themselves, good, bad or indifferent. They are picking up on everything you are saying and doing, as well as everything you’re NOT. It hurts me to hear people speak of our youth today as “the lost generation” or “useless and hopeless”. They aren’t lost! They are RIGHT IN FRONT OF YOU AND I, WAITING … just reach out to one; I promise you … they’ll respond. You may have to earn their trust and why not, they’ve been betrayed, unloved, forgotten, disregarded, abandoned, abused and who knows what else? Just let them know you WANT to be there for them in the best way you can, and that if you work together, you will do your level best to change their path to something productive and positive. The relationships that can be birthed from merely reaching out to these youth and their families—Yes, that is part of the deal, if it isn’t your own child—are so rewarding. These relationships can develop into lifelong friendships that are priceless and lifealtering for both of you! Our children REALLY ARE our future and it REALLY DOES take a VILLAGE to raise a child. Let’s come together and secure our future. Let’s RAISE our children (in every sense of the word). Together, we WILL!
