Lake Lanier Scrimmage

On March 9th, GT Crew went on a little field trip to Gainesville, Georgia to have a pre-season scrimmage with several northern crews on Lake Lanier. Penn State, Ithaca College, and University of New Hampshire, among some other colleges, were spending their spring breaks around the area to row on the lake.

The 8+ “A” boat raced against Penn State’s novice women 8+ and the Ithaca 3rd varsity 8+. While it was known we had some stiff competition, we pulled out ahead, winning four out of five races. Overall, an extremely encouraging start to the spring season for novice women.

Represented by a very powerful and fast 4+, the varsity women on the squad this semester raced against Penn State’s 4+ many times, and even some novice 8+ boats as well. A very promising boat.

The heavyweight novice 8+ did well, placing second in every piece and finally beating the Ithaca 3rd varsity eight in an intense 500 meter sprint. The lightweight novice eight was very green, with half of the boat joining the team only this semester. They progressed rapidly throughout the day, almost beating out Penn State.

GT Heavy 8+ and Ithaca Heavy A 8+ ahead of GT Light 8+ for most pieces (GT Lightweights maintained capped stroke rate, while GT Heavies and Ithaca Heavies pushed the rate), with Ithaca Heavy B and Penn State boatlengths behind. All 1500 meter pieces were well raced, with GT Lightweights pushing the GT Heavy and Ithaca Heavy from behind.

John Hunter Regatta

The 28th Annual John Hunter hosted by GT Crew and St. Andrew Rowing at Lake Lanier was another dark and rainy day, but we didn’t let the weather beat us down. There were fanstastic rows from every squad; while GT Crew didn’t win the points trophy, all boats were very successful nonetheless. Senior Spotlight

Carlos Alas Major: Mechanical Engineering Years on Crew: 3

The oldest of 3 brothers and a sister, I grew up in a small town in Honduras and moved to Naples, FL with my family at the age of 16. An avid soccer player and fan, I turned to rowing at Tech when I transferred here in 2011. Besides school and rowing, I enjoy helping out in community projects especially through a Hispanic organization at Tech. I look forward for my last semester on the team with the VL8+.
