WELCOME TO COSTA RICA Costa Ricans have many reasons to be proud of this small Central American country (only 51,100 square kilometers). Even though Costa Rica’s territory represents only 0.03% of the world’s landmass, this little piece of earth is home to 4% of the flora and fauna on the planet. For this reason, Costa Rica is noted for being one of the countries with the richest biodiversity in the world. Twenty-five percent of Costa Rican territory is under protection as national parks, biological reserves, private reserves and national wildlife refuges. Home to over four million Costa Ricans (who call themselves ticos and ticas), this country chose over fifty years ago to abolish its army. Despite the poverty that holds many neighboring countries in its grasp, Costa Rica has built an oasis of relative peace and growth opportunities. For example, 96 percent of the population can read and write, and the nationalized health care system has managed to keep infant mortality at very low levels. For these reasons, Costa Ricans feel pride. Whether they speak Spanish, Bribri, or Mekatelyu, whether

they travel by horse or by car, ticos know that they have two invaluable treasures: the natural beauty of their country and their sociopolitical system, which is the envy of many other countries.

Geography Costa Rica is connected to the Atlantic and Pacific oceans, which give the country its diverse ecosystems. The country is cut in half by a volcanic mountain range system that runs from the northeast to the southeast of the territory. Volcanic mountain ranges are separated by deep valleys and other mountains. The Talamanca mountain range, which crosses over the southern region of the country, penetrates deep into the northern part of Panama; this is where the tallest peak in the country is located.

Borders Costa Rica lies between Nicaragua to the north and Panama to the south. It has a narrow Pacific coastal region. Cocos Island (10 sq mi; 26 sq km), about 300 mi (483 km) off the Pacific Coast, is under Costa Rican sovereignty.

Location Middle America, bordering both the Caribbean Sea and the North Pacific Ocean, between Nicaragua and Panama

Area total: 51,100 sq. km/19,575 sq mi Water: 440 square kilometers.

Climate & Seasons

Population

Costa Rica is a tropical country located between two oceans--the Pacific and the Atlantic—with a complex geography which makes for varied climatic conditions and a variety of life zones ranging from tropical dry forest to high altitude moors. Generally the temperature varies between 14 and 32 degrees Centigrade (50 to 90 degrees Fahrenheit) depending on your altitude.

Costa Rica has a population of 4,016,000 inhabitants (according to the 2005), distributed in the seven provinces which make up the country: San Jose, Alajuela, Heredia, Cartago, Guanacaste, Puntarenas and Limon. The capital is located in the province of San Jose, which is the most populous of all. The population is largely of Spanish and mestizo descent.

Even though there are not definite seasons and the climate in each region is relatively stable during the year, there are slight climatic changes depending on if it is the “summer” (the dry season) or “winter” (the rainy or “green” season). The dry season is usually from December to April, and the green season is from May to November. The Atlantic coast is an exception, with the driest weather in March and April and again in September and October

Language Spanish is the official language, however some regions have their own languages—in Limon, a Creole English called Mekatelyu is spoken, along with other indigenous languages like Brbri and Cabecar. In other regions, indigenous groups like the Gnabe or Guaymi, as well as the Boruca, have also preserved their own languages.

Government

and clothing, construction materials, fertilizer, and plastics.

Costa Rica is a constitutional democratic republic. Elections are held every four years. In 2006, Oscar Arias Sånchez was elected president. Arias, who had served as president once before (1986–1990), won the Nobel Peace Prize in 1987 for fostering peace talks that eventually ended the civil wars in Central America.

Costa Rica is the number two producer of bananas and the first producer of pineapples in the world. Costa Rica also produces and exports coffee, melons, sugar, and beef as well as manufactured goods such as textiles, electronics, and medical equipment. Raw materials, consumer goods, capital equipment, and petroleum are imported. The United States is the largest trading partner.

Economy

Religion

Costa Rica is an agricultural country, although tourism and industry are being developed at a moderate pace. Industries include food processing and the manufacture of electronic components, textiles

Catholicism is the official religion, but freedom of worship is guaranteed to all. About 75% of the people are Roman Catholics.

The national currency is the Colón (¢). Dollars and traveller’s checks can be exchanged at banks and hotels. Banks open from 9am-3pm from Mondays to Fridays. Modern telephone, facsimile, telegraph, telex, e-mail and airmail facilities exist for internal and international communities.

Most restaurants add 10% service charge called “servicio” to the bill. It is also customary to leave a gratuity as personal thanks for good service. Bellboys and housekeepers can receive $0.5 - $2 depending

The contrasts in Costa Rica are found not only in biodiversity, but also in our native dishes. For example, in Limon, on the Atlantic Coast, the food is characterized by use of the oil and coconut milk

in the most traditional recipes. Corn is the prime ingredient used in making the most popular dishes in the northern region of Costa Rica, which are appealing to the rest of the country too. A great variety of picadillos would delight anyone’s taste buds. Ceviche and other seafood are very popular in the Pacific region, and casados and gallo pinto are never in short supply at sodas all over the country. Soditas are small diners or very simple restaurants, often with wooden tables and chairs and red-checked tablecloths, where you are attended by the owner.

Regions Central Valley This region offers everything there is to discover in the country: famous national parks, plenty of flora and fauna, the perfect conditions to practice adventure sports and all kinds of history, culture and nature tours. Four provinces- Cartago, Heredia, Alajuela and San José converge in the Central Valley, full of little towns, each with its own characteristic feel. At the centre of it all is the bustling city of San José, Costa Rica’s business and government centre. San José is just large enough to have fine restaurants, nightclubs, excellent hotels and cultural activities of all kinds. In Costa Rica, Central Valley doesn’t translate into dull city action, on the contrary, it’s close to everything there is to come across in the country: from world famous national parks vibrant with flora and fauna, and hundreds of interesting species, to the perfect setting to go in adventure trips or leisure activities, to all sorts of history, culture and nature tours. This city also sports a network of museum exhibits the Gold, Jade Museum, featuring nine impressive

displays of Costarican culture heritage with an altitude of over 2900 metres above sea level. The eternal spring-like climate ideal for strolling around the city’s many attractions or basing your stay here and visiting the rest of county on day trips. San Jose is the seat of most government services; however, the provincial capitals Alajuela, Heredia and Cartago offer a variety of quality commercial and tourism services.

Mid Pacific This part of the country has a magical, almost mystical appeal for travelers in search of the perfect beach in strong contact with nature. The Pacific Coast runs over 500 miles from its northernmost tip to the border with Panamá. The whole coast is made up of spectacular beaches, some isolated, some more populated. Nevertheless, you’ll always find somewhere to lay down your beach towel and start recharging your solar batteries The mid pacific or central pacific zone features a great number of beaches, seaside villages and inland picturesque towns that captivate tourists from all over the world. The region’s main attractions are its many beaches along the coast and protected wilderness areas. Nature areas include wildlife refuges, national parks and biological reserves. The mid pacific attracts thousands of visitors and as a result there are many sporting events, cultural and leisure activities. The mid pacific is a nucleus with adventure sports such as surfing, kayaking and river rafting as well as nature oriented activities including bird watching, trekking along nature trails and many natural habitats.

South Pacific Stretching along the Pacific coast from Dominical in the north to Punta Burica to the southern end of the country, this region includes many natural attractions of the Talamanca mountain range. The stunning biodiversity, natural beauty of the southern pacific zone contains several places of great natural importance. The region offers a variety of activities that include hiking up Mount Chirripó, Costa Rican’s tallest mountain; horseback riding, rafting, diving, bird watching and nature tours. Two very important protected areas are located in this region defined by The National Geographic

magazine as “The Most Biologically Intense Place on the Planet” and La Amistad Natural Park, a joint effort of Costa Rica and Panama recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.

North Pacific (Guanacaste) The destination

Guanacaste, is the most popular destination for those looking for the sun, unspoiled beaches, and adventure. This tourist destination offers upscale accommodations, great weather, and the pleasant Costa Rican hospitality. The name of the province derives its name from the first civilization that lived in this area, and means –tree of the ears- as the fruit of these giant trees is shaped similar to a human ear.

The people

The Guanacastecos, descendants of the Chorotegan Indians and early Spanish settlers, started many of the traditions that are now referred to as typically Costa Rican, and a strong folkloric character pervades the region. As you travel through the region, watch for traditional costumes, folk dancing, music, and recipes handed down from colonial times. North Guanacaste has two main tourist centres that are Liberia (central of stopover distribution, scale and excursion) and Santa Cruz, and three other tourist centres: El Coco, Tamarindo and Flamingo. The landscape of the coast is exceptional. There are beaches of white sands and a peaceful sea qualified by intense blue, especially the ones located inside Papagayo’s Gulf (Nacascolo, Virador, Iguanita and Panama). It is one of the regions of greater development. Source: Costa Rica Tourism Bureau

The seasons

Guanacaste stretches endlessly towards the horizon. During the Dry Season - from November to May most of the wild areas and farms are covered by wild savanna grasses that float over the land, like lakes of gold. During the Green Season -from June to October- the land itself appears to be alive with thick, green tropical forest growth, there is sun every morning with some short showers in the afternoons.

For the seasonal activities of windsurfing and turtle watching, you have to come during Dry Season, for most other activities such as bird watching, diving, fishing or plain relaxing, you can join us at almost any time of year.

The Caribbean The distinctive culture of the Caribbean is like another country in itself. Influenced by the Afro-Caribbean background and a distinctive pace of life, this region offers an out of the ordinary experience for delegates: Lodges that can only be accessed by water, through the Tortuguero waterways, where endemic species expose their authentic existence; the most exotic and multihued sea life submerged deep within the country’s largest coastal coral reefs; luscious rainforests, boasting with one of the country’s most biological diverse life; adventure that unravels in all of its true forms; authentic Caribbean style cuisine in a living in peace with the typical Costa Rican dishes… This zone is ideal for smaller groups, given that the majority of hotels lodges and camps are small, intimate and set in lush tropical gardens or forests.

Arenal, Monteverde & Sarapiqui Beyond the immensity of nature

If nature attracts you, this region offers reserves, forests, relaxation, adventure and action!

Arenal Volcano Arenal Volcano, the most attractive active volcano in Costa Rica, is located in the San Carlos plain of central Alajuela province, one of Costa Rica’s most agriculturally productive zones. Ciudad Quesada, the main city in San Carlos is a midpoint for trips north to Volcán Arenal, Ecotermales thermal waters, Caño Negro Wildlife Refuge and the Venado Caves. Some of the main attractions in this area are:

Sarapiquí

The country’s premier eco-lodges call this nature paradise home. The virgin rainforest makes contrast with the rustic country roads that wind through lowland hills. You’ll also enjoy the family farms, banana and pineapple plantations as far as the eye can see.

Monteverde

A major destination for nature lovers, Monteverde is a very unique community and a magical biological reserve. Many rare species, including the quetzal, and the three-wattled bellbird live in this land of greenery. The cloud forest stretches from the lush ferns

and mosses that cover the ground to the dark canopy formed by the tallest trees. Vines and web like moss hang down and swing slowly in the breeze. A group of Quakers mostly from the United States founded the colony of Monteverde 40 years ago, choosing Costa Rica for its peace and tolerance. Monteverde is just below the cloud forest, far from tropical heat. Today, the people raise dairy cattle and goats on the steep slopes above the village of Santa Elena.

SUSTAINABLE TOURISM Our commitment to nature and caring for the planet’s limited resources starts in a small but beautiful country named Costa Rica. Throughout our history, Costa Ricans have made key decisions to sustain a high standard of life for our people. Costa Rica created a new constitution in 1949 and the most significant factor in it was the abolishment of the national army which opened financial support and allowed more attention to invest in social programs, such as education and health. Our health care system was built on solidarity and equality principles, meaning that 100% of the population is given equal comprehensive public health insurance with equal access to services. In 1945 Costa Rica declared Los Robledales our first National Park, located south of the province of Cartago along the Interamerican highway. The Costa Rican Tourism Board was formed in 1955 and around the same time a law established Volcan Turrialba and Volcán Irazú National Parks. In 1963 we started to organize our National Parks Department and from then on, we have created a large number of national parks, biological reserves, forest reserves, protected sanctuaries, wildlife refuges and one archaeological national monument. Costa Rica officially established its Biodiversity Law in 1998, opening the space to the creation of our current National System of Conservation Areas, (SINAC). During the last decade, governments along with the private sector impulse conservation of protected natural areas such as wet lands, mixed and

private wildlife refuges as well as the establishment of a large quantity of private reserves for conservation and ecotourism purposes. Approximately a quarter of our territory belongs to a protected area and experts have estimated that Costa Rica has 5% of the world’s biodiversity. We are grateful and proud that our governments have historically supported conservation initiatives proposed by distinguished citizens since 1945 when the first national park was established. Biodiversity has always been the main ingredient in Costa Rica’s tourism industry. As a tour operator, Vestours promotes the conservation of our natural resources since the are main ingredient for the development of our tourism. Thanks to our biodiversity, we can offer a wide variety of activities that our visitors can experience in a handful of places on Earth. Our protected areas have been the object of admiration, and have always enhanced the experience that our sales team design for our visitors. The tourism industry represents the main income for many families and the numbers keep growing every year, therefore our engagement with sustainable tourism starts here, with and for our people. We invite you to join us in this incredible journey, to learn with us how we can better protect our environment and to continue the legacy of those visionaries who decided to protect this small piece of paradise more than 50 years ago.

Sustainable Tourism Certification, CST.

What CST is all about

CST is a program that seeks to categorize and certify tourism companies according to the degree of sustainability in their operations. CST was launched in 1997 and it currently provides certification services to hotels and tour operators. Four fundamental aspects are evaluated:

1. Physical-biological parameters

Evaluates the interaction between the company and its surrounding natural habitat.

2. Infrastructure and services (For Tour Operators)

Evaluates the management policies and the operational systems within the company and its infrastructure.

3. Service Management (For Tour Operators)

Evaluates processes by means of which, the company manages service lifecycle: Operational Company Policies, General Policies, and programs that demonstrate implementation, continuity and improvement of the policies. Product Design Standards are critical to this aspect.

4. External clients

evaluates the interaction of the company with its clients in terms of how much it allows and invites the client to be an active contributor to the company’s policies of sustainability.

5. Socio-economic environment

Evaluates the interaction of the company with the local communities. For each and every one of these items a list of specific questions was designed to help evaluate how thoroughly the firm complies with a series of standards previously established for the social, environmental

and economics fields. Each and every one of the questions refers to an element of sustainability with which the firm should comply in order to qualify in any one of the different stages or levels of fulfillment, which for our purposes we have labeled “levels”. The final rating will be assigned to the company in question according to the lowest level achieved in any of the four fields evaluated. To measure and fix these different levels, the CST program provides a system of “sustainability levels””, on a scale of 0 to 5, in which each number indicates the relative position of the firm in terms of sustainability. This scheme provides a way to classify the tourist firms in terms of “levels” in a system very similar to the commercial categorization of hotels by means of the well-known stars system. If the first level of a category is achieved (level 1) this means that the firm has taken the first step on the road or process of sustainability. The higher levels correspond to stages that are each one more advanced than the previous one, peaking on level of level 5, which means that the company is considered

as outstanding in terms of sustainability.

The level assigned to any firm will always be the lowest level achieved in any of the areas. It is expected that this policy will encourage the firms to advance towards the model of sustainability by giving the same degree of consideration and importance to each of the four areas evaluated. The CST system is designed to include a series of incentives that will increase in benefits for each company, in direct proportion to its increased rating. This means that as the rating increases, more and better benefits will be received; international and national publicity and promotion, specifically designed for the CST; training for its personnel; priority participation in various world tourism fairs and events, etc.

Take The Journey With Us Respect for communities and the environment is a core Vesatours value. We’re convinced that our guests, in choosing responsible operators and adhering to a few key guidelines, are ensuring themselves a winwin vacation experience that surpasses all others in terms of fun, satisfaction, cultural immersion and memories. We’ve included a few specific suggestions for Costa Rica that travellers might like to keep in mind; for a more general list, see The International

30

Stay on the not - so - beaten track.

Trails not only keep you from getting lost, they localize and minimize the impact travellers have on the environment. Most are designed to maximize your experience; if you stick to them, there’s no telling what wonder will be around the corner.

Animals in Costa Rica are wild.

Misguided travellers who offer food put animals at risk by interfering with their natural wariness of humans (the backpack-raiding monkeys at Manuel Antonio are a case in point) and can actually make them sick. Resist the temptation!

Leave things right where they are.

It’s illegal to take anything out of national parks, and inhabitants of other areas would much prefer you left things intact as well. A digital picture will last longer and it’s easier to e-mail…

Keeping the water cycle clean.

Not all areas in Costa Rica have efficient watertreatment systems. Try to bring biodegradable soaps and shampoos.

One person’s endangered species is another person’s tourist trap.

Selling turtle eggs is illegal, with the exception of a sanctioned harvest in Ostional; it’s best to steer clear. Tortoiseshell products generally made from the endangered hawksbill turtle, animal skins, corals or orchids (except those grown commercially) are other souvenirs to avoid. Many environmental groups in Costa Rica sell beautiful – and responsible –

keepsakes.

Costa Rica’s landfills don’t get a vacation.

When travelling, for convenience sake, it’s easy to forget the three “Rs” that have probably been instilled in your life at home: reduce, reuse, and recycle – in that order. You – and Costa Rica – will feel better if you stay diligent.

Double your money.

Most travellers often like to give something back to Costa Rica, and it’s much appreciated. In donating

to a recognized group, your money will have much more effect than donations to individuals will. Vesatours can direct you to a number of community organizations.

Get into the spirit.

Doing some background reading on the Costa Rican culture will help you respect and enjoy the culture that much more. You’ll be amazed at how quickly any well-intentioned attempt at saying a few Spanish words will draw a smile.

Selva Bananito Lodge 4 Stars Ecolodge. 3 Leave CST Sustanaible Tourism Certificacion Location:

The Lodge is located at the foot of Cerro Muchilla, or Muchilla Mountain, in the Province of Limón on the Atlantic side of Costa Rica. Cerro Muchilla is part of an eastern outcropping of Costa Rica’s southernmost mountain range, the Cordillera de Talamanca, much of which belongs to the enormous Costa Rican/Panamanian La Amistad Biosphere Reserve. This protected zone consists of a core -La Amistad International Park- and several surrounding wildlife and Indian reserves (which also act as wildlife reserves), adding up to a total of about one million hectares (2.2 million acres) of uninterrupted, protected land. This “green belt,” which spans southern Costa Rica from east to west, remains the least explored territory in the country, its biological wealth scarcely studied. Selva Bananito Ecolodge, is highly distinguished for its conservation efforts because we do take an active stand in conservation by directing and supporting our watershed conservation efforts through Fundación Cuencas de Limón or Limon Watershed Foundation. In order to achieve this goal, we provide logistic and financial support to this Non Profit Organization, through revenues generated by the nature and adventure activities we offer at our Ecolodge Hotel Costa Rica, Ecolodge Selva Bananito.

Description:

What does Ecolodge Hotel Costa Rica actually mean? Very simply, Ecolodge Hotel Costa Rica refers to the services we provide as regular hotels do, such as room and board, but it also makes allusion to Ecolodge Costa Rica, which means that we are oriented toward an environmentally friendly operation as a core value of our operation. Above all, Ecolodge Costa Rica refers to the location in which lodges are to be found. Selva Bananito, your Costa Rica Ecolodge, is situated in a pristine and natural setting, located at the foothill of the Cerro Mochila, the eastern outcropping of the Talamanca Mountain Range, in the province of Limon, Costa Rica.

Facilities:

Selva Bananito Ecolodge offers: • Spacious, elegantly tiled bathrooms with solar heated water. • A spacious “Rancho” (main lodge) to enjoy meals and socialize with others. • Ample decks with spectacular views and comfortable hammocks for your “siesta”. • Each tastefully designed cabin features one queen size and one full size bed, or two queen sized beds. • Eleven individual cabins constructed of beautiful salvaged wood. They stand on stilts, following Caribbean tradition. • Romantic, candle-lit evenings. To preserve a more natural night-time ambience, we use no electricity. Reading lamps are provided in each cabin. • The privilege of exploring a pristine environment in the intimacy of a small group, while also learning about human land use in the lowland tropics.

Si Como No Hotel 5 Stars Hotel 5 Leaf CST Sustanaible Tourisim Certification

Location:

Description:

Facilities:

Discreetly integrated into this tropical paradise is Si Como No. Proudly occupying the most idyllic hilltop in Manuel Antonio, this award-winning eco-designed Resort & Spa provides its own signature version of “barefoot luxury” to all its guests. From Hotel Si Como No, you can visit nearby beaches, the National Park and mangroves. Not to mention, the hotel’s own Wildlife Nature Exhibits, which are adjacent to the property. Guests also enjoy a variety of water sports and local shopping, including the hotel’s Gift Shop & Art Gallery. Founded in 1992 by Ecovision, S.A., Hotel Si Como No has been a shining example of the global eco-tourism movement ever since it opened its doors. As such, the hotel is a unique blend of the country’s incredible bio-diversity and the deeply-rooted cultural values of the Costa Rican people. An active member of many planet-saving conservation programs, Si Como No practices what has come to be called “sustainable hospitality.” Principal owner/general manager Jim Damalas came to Costa Rica over 25 years ago. Formerly, an art director and producer working in Hollywood, Mr. Damalas fell in love with the area upon his first visit when he camped in what was to become Manuel Antonio National Park. That “camping trip” turned out to be more than a vacation, but rather the beginning of a love affair with the country and its people that continues to this day.

Located in Manuel Antonio, a veritable treasure chest of natural beauty, Hotel Si Como No is surrounded by lush tropical rainforest, inviting soft sand beaches, and nearby rafting rivers.

The Hotel’s 58 rooms are distributed within ten separate terraces located on ten acres of protected tropical forest. Each room has well-appointed bathrooms, fully stocked minibars, most with private balconies, direct dial telephones, energy efficient air conditioning, and are classified in five categories: Standard, Superior, and Deluxe Rooms, plus Deluxe and Honeymoon Suites that include adjoining sofa couch and desk areas, plus full amenities. You won’t find televisions or CNN in your hotel rooms, but rather the sounds of nature and the tropical vistas from your private balcony.
