THE MISSION OF RENEW INTERNATIONAL RENEW International fosters spiritual renewal in the Catholic tradition by empowering individuals and communities to encounter God in everyday life, deepen and share faith, and connect faith with action.

Welcome Dear Friends of RENEW, Welcome to the 17th annual RENEW gala! Each year this ballroom fills with dedicated supporters of RENEW’s mission to revitalize parish life and create a Church that is more inclusive and welcoming. I am grateful for your generosity. The gala is our largest fundraiser, and we depend on its success to enable us to serve all people and parishes that desire to renew their faith regardless of their economic situation. Your financial contribution makes it possible for us to fulfill our mission wherever we are needed—in the inner-cities and rural areas of the United States as well as in the developing world and on military bases around the globe. It also allows us to develop innovative pastoral resources for small faith-sharing groups, in multiple languages, using print and digital formats that are accessible to all. Tonight we honor three dedicated Catholics from our own archdiocese— Joseph Franzetti, Renée DeGagné, and Mary Ryan—for the commitment to the faith that they demonstrate through service to others. Each of them in his or her own unique way has made the world a better place On behalf of RENEW’s Board of Trustees and staff, thank you for your generosity. It is because of you that we are able to bring new energy and zeal to rebuilding the Church. May God bless you and your families abundantly! With gratitude and warmest regards,

Sr. Theresa Rickard, O.P. President and Executive Director

In addition, Renée is a member of the RBC Investor & Treasury Services Operating Committee. Renée is deeply involved in supporting RBC’s company culture of respect, diversity, and inclusion. As a co-chair of the RBC Diversity Leadership Council for the United States, she helps promote initiatives that create a positive work environment for all. As part of the council, she is on the RWomen Committee which promotes an ethical workplace and fosters community. In addition to the work in-house, RWomen visits schools to promote education and highlight opportunities for those who continue their education. For over a decade, Renée has also been a part of the Canadian Association of New York (CANY) which promotes cross-border business relationships, and she serves on the board of its charitable counterpart, the CANY Foundation, which supports children’s charities in the tri-state area. She has served as the chair for the Maple Leaf Ball, an annual black-tie event that raises funds for the foundation. The foundation not only provides financial support, but also organizes volunteers for work in parks, schools, senior centers, shelters, and hospitals. Members of the foundation founded and supervise the Terry Fox Run for Cancer which has raised more than $2 million for cancer research since 1994. Her work helping women to succeed in financial services careers earned her the Mentor of the Year award from Traders Magazine. She has also served as a panelist on the topic of women in the financial services industry. A native of Ontario, Canada, Renée attended Mt. St Joseph Academy in London, Ontario before earning a bachelor’s degree in economics from the University of Western Ontario. She earned a master’s degree in business administration with a concentration in finance from Dalhousie University in Halifax, Nova Scotia. Renée is a member of Our Lady of Sorrows Parish in South Orange, N.J. President’s Award Joseph Franzetti Joe was introduced to RENEW International in the ’60s, when he was an altar boy at Our Lady of Mercy Parish in Park Ridge, N.J., and assisted at Masses celebrated by Father Tom Kleissler, co-founder of RENEW. As Joe grew into adulthood, married, and had a family with his wife, Patty, he stayed close to the organization, offering his business acumen and financial support. He came to serve on the Board of Trustees, eventually taking on the role of chair. In his professional life, Joe is a senior vice president at Berkadia where he manages CMBS lending relationships. He has more than 30 years of mortgage finance experience. Prior to joining Berkadia in 2010, he was a managing director at Cohen Financial where he advised borrowers on loan restructuring and workouts. Prior to that, Joe was responsible for loan originations and syndications at New York Credit Advisors. As part of that activity, he securitized commercial mortgage loans and invested in senior and subordinate debt positions. Earlier, he managed the Commercial Mortgage Conduit at Citigroup where he was responsible for originating and underwriting. He also managed the ratings groups for CMBS, RMBS and REIT securities at both Standard & Poor’s and Duff & Phelps (now Fitch). Joe is a past president of CMSA (now CRE Finance Council) a professional trade association that promotes liquidity in the commercial real estate finance markets. He served on the board of governors of the association for nine years. He also served on the commercial board of governors of the Mortgage Bankers Association. His professional designations include Certified Public Accountant (inactive) and CRI (Chartered Realty Investor). He is a frequent speaker and writer on the topic of commercial mortgage-backed securities. Joe holds a master’s degree in business administration from New York University and a bachelor’s degree in accounting from Villanova University. In addition to his professional accomplishments, Joe has coached municipal softball, soccer, and basketball teams. He works with alumni organizations from Villanova University. He is also an active member of Presentation Parish in Upper Saddle River, N.J. Joe and Patty, his wife of thirty-five years, have raised three daughters and two sons. They live in Woodcliff Lake, the same town in which his grandfather first settled after emigrating from Italy in 1915.

Msgr. Thomas A. Kleissler Award Mary Ryan In her senior year at Douglass College, Mary Ryan intended to join the Medical Mission Sisters upon graduation, but God had other plans and, as Mary says, they have worked out exactly right. That same year Mary met her future husband, John Ryan. In 1975 they were married while Mary continued her training to be a physician’s assistant. After a short time as Brooklyn residents, Mary and John settled in Westfield, N.J., her childhood home. Mary was a diabetic from a young age, and her condition worsened with time. In 1980 the “floaters” caused by diabetic retinopathy turned to blindness overnight. At the time, she had one young son and a 10-month-old baby at home. A third son followed, and Mary and John, realizing they had been blessed in many ways, decided to look for a tangible way to thank God. They applied to Catholic Charities to become foster parents. They were accepted and, during the course of 17 years, cared for 26 newborns, one of whom they adopted. Mary and John also opened their home to young patients brought to the United States by Healing the Children for urgent medical care, and for several years, through Project Children, they hosted young people who were living amid the unrest in Northern Ireland. A parishioner since 1977 at Holy Trinity Parish, Westfield, Mary took part in RENEW in its early days. With John, she also participated on a pre-Cana team, the Parish Council, and Cornerstone. In 2001, John suffered a massive stroke that has left him with impaired speech and other disabilities. Despite Mary’s inability to see and John’s inability to speak, many have noted that it is impossible to tell that Mary and John are disabled at all. Mary prefers the expression “differently abled but undoubtedly blessed.” She believes that “blindness is a lack of sight, not a lack of vision.” In 2000, Mary was commissioned as an extraordinary minister of Holy Communion at Holy Trinity, and in recent years she has participated in a weekly prayer group with inmates at Eastern State Prison in Avenel, N.J. Mary is grateful every day for opportunities she has to make a positive difference in the lives of others. She says that while God’s plan may seem mysterious at times, it usually works out exactly right. For the past twenty-five years Mary has hosted a RENEW group in her home, sharing faith, connecting faith with daily life, and moving to works of charity and acts of justice. Most recently Mary has hosted a RENEW group sharing faith with Creation at the Crossroads , a small-group resource based on Pope Francis’ encyclical letter Laudato Si’ ( On Care for Our Common Home ).
