A Letter from our President On World Mission Day, Pope Francis said the mission of the Church is “to spread throughout the world the flame of faith that Jesus has lighted in the world: faith in God who is Father, Love, and Mercy.” Our method, the pope said, “is not proselytism, but rather the sharing of a flame that warms the soul.” Each one of us is called to share the flame of faith in simple acts of kindness and works of mercy. The witness of our lives steeped in faith and reflected in acts of love is the only antidote to the sterility of secularism, the numbness of consumerism, and the allure of sin. We will become a Church capable of warming souls only when we open our stony hearts to the Sacred Heart of Christ and allow the fire of his deep abiding love for us to soften and reshape our hearts into his own. To help build a culture of witness we are introducing Be My Witness: Formation for the New Evangelization and its Spanish counterpart, Sean mis testigos: Formación para la Nueva Evangelización. This twelve-session faith-sharing process engages parish staff, lay leaders, and parishioners in the New Evangelization. A video from our series Turning Points / Cambios de rumbos is integrated into each of the sessions, giving participants an example of how to witness to their faith. In many parts of the United States and Canada, in response to changing demographics and the shortage of priests, parishes are undergoing the challenging process of restructuring. We are also introducing a new resource for these merged or “shared” parishes. New Wine, New Wineskins provides a pastoral process, tools, and resources to engage the faithful in the transition and help them navigate the change. As parishioners meet in small communities, New Wine, New Wineskins allows them to build together on their collective journey and enter a new phase of parish life as missionary disciples. About the Authors Fr. John Phalen, CSC, is a priest of the Congregation of Holy Cross and serves as the President of Holy Cross Family Ministries.
