Integrity's Springs of Life
A few years ago, I was with some friends one night at a park nearby our university. We went there in a peculiar fashion, riding skateboards on our chests through the city’s underground water system that had not yet been filled with water. We just wanted to have a fun night looking for frisbees that got stuck in the tunnels from the pond of a nearby disc golf course. Though my friends knew more about the university and surrounding areas than I did, none of us could have expected what would happen that night. We pushed through a few spider webs, and every now and then, we would come to a wide spot in the tunneling system where we could sit and shine our flashlights and decide where to go, or what to do next. We had a lot of fun choosing who would go first to clear the way for the rest of us. All our fun, however, turned to nervousness, when the cops came only minutes after we came up to the surface of the park and hopped a couple fences. My friends quickly ran in the opposite direction of the police. Understandably, they didn’t want to have anything to do with the cops, but we knew we had done something that was illegal and deserving of punishment. We were caught not doing what was right, and compromised our integrity by trying to get away with doing the wrong thing when no one was looking. At this point, I said to my friends that we should simply let the cops know what we were doing, and just hope they would let us go, but I was left by myself to see if this would pass. Though it happened years ago, and I’ve graduated from college, I still find that I’m learning to live with integrity. It was a challenge then, just as it is still a challenge today, because of sin, which every person faces. It would be bad news if the story stopped there. But in the story of the Gospel, which actually means ‘good news’, God experienced every struggle we could face so that humanity would be saved from sin. God sent His Son into the world so that whoever believes in His Son would have everlasting life, and Jesus affirmed this when He said that He came that we might have life—and have it to the full. So what is it about having life that relates to integrity? It may help when we think about how our heart is called the place from which “flow the springs of life,” as it says in Proverbs 4:23 (ESV). Our heart also happens to be on the inside of our body where others cannot plainly see—so it is with the choice to have integrity, which goes beyond what others can see. for more stories, visit renewtheresponse.org/stories.php!
When no one’s watching, a student often has opportunities to cheat during a test. But when that student chooses not to—even though no one’s watching—that is a true reflection of integrity. Integrity requires a point or instance of struggle, and it also involves a person’s motivation that causes him or her to do what is right. There is no struggle when we make decisions so others can see what great integrity we have, but integrity is marked by doing what is right even when no one knows. God is the only One who can see everything. In ancient Israel, God made David king over His people during a time when people understood this aspect of God. David cried out to God, “Search me, O God, and know my heart! Try me and know my thoughts! And see if there be any grievous way in me, and lead me in the way everlasting!” The king recognized that by his own power, he could not know all of his errors; he needed God’s leading to live a life of integrity. That night when I walked up to the police car on behalf of my friends and myself, I also needed God’s leading to no longer do what I had been doing. I had no idea what the police would say— he could have been mean or scary and given me a ticket. He could have even gotten out of his car and put handcuffs on me for being out so late in a place I wasn’t supposed to be. Thankfully, though, he stayed in his vehicle that night and just talked to me briefly from his car window, and expressed that we were not allowed in the park after it was closed. My friends and I were given the opportunity to go back to school with only a warning. We were given a second chance to make choices differently based on what we were told. God gave us an experience at the park that night that reflects how He wants us to come to Him when we know we’ve done wrong in order to receive His saving grace. Thankfully, the Gospel tells us that Jesus not only teaches us how to live with integrity but also leads us in the way everlasting.

WELCOME TO THE TEAM! Hola! My name is Grace, and I’m going to be a freshman at UCSD this fall. When I first joined the team, I found RE:NEW to be an intriguing and unique ministry that really seemed to strive to further God’s kingdom and His glory. In the past couple of months, that statement has been reassured to me over and over again. I have been so encouraged by the family here and have grown so much in my relationship with Christ. God’s love is evident in all those who work together here; those who have no apparent ties to each other except for their love for Christ and desire to do His work. The labor is not the easiest, but God gave me these projects to challenge my faith. To be honest, there is work here that needs to be done that will take close to forever to finish. I know that, without Him, I would not have the determination to continue. He was the only reason I persevered; it was all for His glory. Through all of this, God has allowed me to feel true joy as I work on project to project. Because of this joy I feel while working, I even had to ask someone to pray for me so that I would be able to stop working and eat! I feel so blessed to be a part of a ministry where I can so clearly see God’s hand working. I only pray that Presence and RE:NEW will be able to reach more people and be continually blessed.
