AUSTRALIAN BOOKBINDERS EXHIBITION

31028 ABE2011_Cat_FA1.qxd:ABE

There has been recent growth in local activity in the realm of book arts, including more regular exhibition of ‘artist books’ in Sydney, and expansion of the professional focus on bookbinding with the upcoming symposium in Canberra in November 2011. This enables greater recognition of ways in which the fields of bookbinding and artist books both overlap and diverge. It is a healthy environment in which to foster exchange, collaboration and inclusion, as well as to provide clarity around the technical standards and practice of design binding as a distinct art form. We look forward to new projects in 2012, with plans for a curated and themed exhibition alongside our annual show next year. This will, we hope, provide opportunity for leading artist-binders to create conceptually linked new work as part of a major Sydney arts event.

DESIGN BINDING This catalogue documents the Australian Bookbinders Exhibition 2011. Established in 1998, and now in it’s 14th year, the ABE is privileged to inhabit the exhibition space at the Art Gallery of NSW Research Library. This is in many ways an ideal venue to present contemporary bookbinding, within the broader context of other visual art

Our sincere thanks go to the staff of the AGNSW Research Library & Archive for their continuing support. Showing here since 2007 has enabled us to consistently provide a focal point for contemporary practice in the art form known as design binding. We greatly appreciate the opportunity to encourage and promote the art in such an appropriate setting.

It is reassuring to see a number of binders return to the ABE this year with works that demonstrate an increase in skill level, and who embrace the challenge of developing imaginative contemporary design binding using traditional

techniques and materials such as leather and vellum which require an enhanced degree of practical expertise. We also warmly welcome newcomers, and the participation of bookbinders who have contributed works from overseas — Rutt Mantoa and Kaia Lukats from Estonia, and Marie Soizic-Garreau from France.

The annual Australian Bookbinders Exhibition is open to anyone to submit works for selection; we look forward to expressions of interest for the ABE 2012.
