FROM THE PUBLI S H E R : Welcome to the February issue of Reno Passport. This month on the cover we showcase local corset designer Neal Way. The cover was shot by Reno local Gary Weinheimer (Nexusix Photography), who saved the photo shoot after a last minute model cancellation. In this issue you will find an article on a 13 year old playwright, a small business profile on EcoReno, the Rubicon Deli and much more. Enjoy our tribute to black history month with our article on boxing legend Jack Johnson. Enjoy!

New lunch spot Rubicon Deli 455 California Ave. - 775.322.9792
West Street Market 148 West Street For those who want to avoid long waiting lists and expensive prices this Valentine’s Day, look no further than Reno’s West Street Market. Located in the heart of downtown Reno, the West Street Market has enough options to customize any romantic or laid back Valentine’s Day plans. Why not celebrate Valentine’s Day over lunch with your significant other? Earthly Delights, a locally owned deli style eatery offers a rotating menu of fresh, homemade indulgences made from scratch daily. Their menu includes a range of items such as unique salads, mac’n’cheese carbonara jeweled with bright veggies and ham, overstuffed chicken enchiladas, and tempting polenta pizzas topped with fresh veggies and cheese. This is a surprisingly romantic first stop on your tour of the West Street Market. Pick up a delicious mix’n’match meal and take it to the West Street Wine Bar to savor it with a glass or bottle of wine. The West Street Wine Bar features over 50 wines by www.renopassport.com
the glass, wine flights, a few specialty beers, and welcomes you to bring outside food in. It is the perfect destination to make your Valentine’s Day as romantic or amusing as you please. The bar has plenty of seating and is posh without being snobbish. Beaujolais Bistro, located next door, will hand deliver everything on its menu for you to enjoy with your wine. The friendly and knowledgeable bartenders are very helpful with wine pairings. Chardonnay with your macaroni and cheese, anyone? Feelin the pinch this year? Why not eat dinner at home and go out for dessert? Stop in to Brickhouse Bakery in the West Street Market for a beignet, a French pastry consisting of deep-fried dough and topped with confectioner’s sugar. They are sweet and light. So try something new this Valentine’s Day. Chances are your date has been winedand-dined on V-Day before. And while everybody loves a romantic meal and good drinks, that doesn’t mean you can’t break the mold a bit. RP Tip: The West Street Market is located on West St. Between First and Second Streets. California Avenue just got better. Last month Rubicon Deli opened their doors as a soft opening to ‘work out the kinks’ said owner Cheri Corsiglia. She moved to Reno three years ago as she began her master plan to open a deli on Cal Ave. She did it, and did it well. When the commercial unit became available she jumped at the opportunity. Corsiglia is not new to the food service industry; she owned and operated Rubicon Deli for many years on

the West Shore of Lake Tahoe, in the Tahoe Tree Nursery building, which she closed and brought to Reno. Rubicon Deli bakes their own bread fresh daily allowing you to choose from jalapeno Jack, white, wheat, pesto garlic, bleu cheers and garlic cheese breads. I ordered the ‘Achin’ for Bacon’ sandwich on jalapeno Jack bread and a soda for $9.83. You can easily split a full sandwich with a friend and get two beverages for under $12. Rubicon Deli gets very busy during the lunch rush, so consider calling ahead for a take-out order. Rubicon has bright green walls and has modern architecture. Outdoor ground level and roof top deck seating will be in full force when it warms up. By Steve White

Chapel Tavern is a neat watering hole located in mid-town, just out of the way of the usual downtown drinking spots. Yet Chapel has plenty of regulars. We caught up with bartender Rob Gotcher to ask him what makes this bar stand out. Chapel has such a great atmosphere to pass the hours with friends with its dark and cozy corners, unique artwork, and delicious concoctions. What makes Chapel your place of worship? It plays to exactly who I am, a social person who loves to be around old friends, new acquaintances, and people just passing through for a quick drink. It’s a melting pot for the eyes and ears and can be a place to start, www.renopassport.com

stop over, or end your night at. There is always someone there to chat with and I love that neighborhood feeling that we have here! I have to say you do have the gift of gab and know everyone that has walked through the door or at least greeted them with a warm smile. Or maybe you’re just playing it up for this interview? Haha…it’s true that I’m always smiling. I just get this buzz from bartending. It’s fast paced and there’s a great energy that you get from being around these people and behind the bar. People come here to have a good time and I am happy to cater to that. We have a great bar menu and I like to get people to try new things whether they are old regulars or first timers at Chapel. What are some of your Chapel favorites to wet the pallet? The Chapel Crush is a personal favorite that contains fresh crushed strawberries and ice and some other secret ingredients. It is sweet, tart and absolutely refreshing. We also make a mean Bloody Mary for those days when you’re hung over or looking for a liquid meal. We have a great whiskey selection and I highly recommend trying the Pig Nose whiskey which is a nice blend that goes down soft and smooth so it’s popular with both the lads and ladies. The West Street Wine Bar opened in mid-December. And despite the crap economy, the bar is booming. Adjacent to all of the other yummy delights the West Street Market offers, West Street Wine is a tasty experience. Martinez used to be in the gaming business, but finally “escaped,” and opened the doors to his dream job: a wine bar owner. I, too, escaped the workweek last Friday, and as those same doors swung open and I walked into West Street Wine, I smelled success. West Street Wine shares a wall (literally, there’s about a one-foot gap between the top of the wall and the ceiling) with the next-door bakery. Something baking wafted over the wall and into my nose. “If you have a wine that tastes like that smells,” I said to Martinez, “ then I’m home.” I’ve done the whole put-some-money-on-a-vend-a-card-and-thentry-a-bunch-of-wines-dispensed-from-a-machine thing before. I don’t like it as much as I like the social interaction I get from talking to a wine expert and having him pour a couple choices of sweet white wine for my tasting. This is what Rick did, and I was impressed. My girlfriend and I each decided upon a glass of great Pinot Gris. Even greater is the wine preservation system Rick uses – it’s called Le Verre de Vin, and essentially sucks all of the air out of the bottle prior to storage, extending the life of the wine by weeks. The system can also enhance the sprizzlies in your favorite sparkling wines and champagnes. “It’s what the professionals use,” Rick said, “and we’re the only place in town that has it.”

corsets
Sporting a NASCAR cap and a matching racing shirt with his blue jeans, Neal Way looks like a stereotypical, old-fashioned Northern Nevadan. He has a natural blue-collar charm about him: unpresumptuous, casual, good-humored. All this makes him the least likely of candidates to be featured in a cover story about counterculture fashion. Sitting at Strega Bar in downtown Reno with Way and a few friends of his, I can’t help but laugh. At first I was a bit skeptical about Way being the same guy that everyone had been telling me about; the guy who is supposed to be this great corset designer. But one look at his work will show you I was wrong—Way knows corsets. His corsets are high quality. He designs each corset custom after measuring and consulting with clients. Prices, he says, start at about $150 per corset, and go up depending on material and the amount of time he’ll have to spend working on the garment. He says he usually spends eight to 12 hours per corset. Way wants to see corsets break into modern fashion. “What I’m doing, I’m taking an 1870s garment (back then, they were used like bras) and taking it into the 21st century as an outer garment,” he says. “People hear the concept and they think bedroom … I want to see them (corsets) on the dance floor.” www.renopassport.com
Jenessa Hair
Norris
Jenessa Norris, hair stylist at Aura Salon, has been doing hair for a long time now. She’s great at all the traditional, sexy hairstyles you see pictured in mainstream media—the “sexy, Victoria’s Secret hair,” as she calls it. You wouldn’t know it by looking at her though. The attractive, Norris (no relation to Chuck) has a distinct punk rock aura about her. Black hair, various tattoos, a quiet, confident look—not who you’d typically expect to see behind you in the mirror, doing your hair. “Mostly I specialize in punk rock, funky hair,” says Norris. “Funky random hair color. I just like really bright colors. More punk rock style of hair, wild … I can braid and do extensions. I do a lot around Burning Man and stuff … Pretty much my favorite hair is Burning Man hair.” Perhaps not your typical Valentine’s Day hair-do, but Norris says it’s important to mix things up a bit. “It’s always nice to switch your hair color or style and not tell your boyfriend,” she says. “Surprise him.” Hair styling by Norris ranges from $100-145, including shampooing and coloring. Her salon also does spa treatments including massages, while serving wine. Norris recommends boyfriends to consider buying their girlfriends gift certificates and giving them to the girlfriend Valentine’s Day morning, so that the she can enjoy a day at the salon and be ready to go out that night.

life-changing albums: hip-hop
Best album lists are always controversial. So rather than debate which hip-hop albums were the best of all time, Reno Passport asked Bombshelter (radio show: 10p.m. – 1a.m. on Wild 102.9 fm) DJs Buddha and Dotkom to list the ten albums that influenced their lives most. Pharcyde - Labcabincalifornia: “The most slept-on West Coast album—ever!” Digable Planets - Blowout Comb: “The sophomore effort from Grammy winning band that reverse-introduced us to jazz.” De La Soul - Buhloone Mindstate: “It was stuck in my CD player for over a year ... The Plugs at their best here.” Method Man - Tical: “Solo effort from Wu Tang member that really introduced us to The Wu ... The Wu Tang changed our perception on rap entirely.” Beastie Boys - Paul’s Boutique: “Dust Brothers did a number on the production and the Boys were PURE MCS at this point!” Atmosphere - God Loves Ugly: “This record acted as our true introduction to Sean Daley.” Who Cares - The LP: “Ernie on the lyrics (makes this) easily one of most important albums in my collection.” 10 www.renopassport.com
Mos Def & Talib Kweli are Black Star: “Finding this album was like finding an ancient tomb.” The Grouch - Success is Destiny: “Honestly, this album is like a mantra.” Aesop Rock - Music for Earthworms: “I used to think he was kinda faking that voice until I met him … he talks exactly like he raps.” Company Flow – Funcrusher: “Everything about it seemed perfectly wrong – to the point of it being perfectly right.” Leaders of the New School - A Future without a Past: “Fun, East Coast hip-hop that showed us we could have a record that was fun, funny and not so serious.” By DJs Buddha and Dotkom

on making beats. Check out the full interview at: www.renopassport.com Walk us through the process of making a beat? The drums are the foundation of everything that you are putting together. I can’t afford drum machines and we live in a digital pirating age so I just steal all the built in sounds from every one that you can imagine. Akai, Yamaha, and my personal favorite… the 808. This is the tricky part. Most people use sequencing to get their beats in tact. I do all the editing in real time. Sure it makes it more difficult but without sequencing holding me to a guideline I come up with some interesting beats by mistake. I think that is half the fun of making a beat.

What are your hopes for this album? My hopes for this record are for me to play it in its entirety without feeling the need to change any tracks. I think with music today that is a big accomplishment. Whenever I hear a record that I can listen to all the way through I know that it was a solid album.
What should young beat makers know about making beats? Experiment. Do not stick to guidelines and what’s hot in hip-hop right now. Experimentation is why this genre continues to thrive. Do not be afraid to push the boundaries and What is your policy on samples? make music that is unsafe. Who knows… Since 90% of all hip-hop tracks are samyou could be the next trendsetter. ples of older songs I would say my policy By Danny Riggs is wide open. 12 www.renopassport.com

personal trainer profile mike rihaly Personal Trainer Mike Rihaly is among the top five trainers nationwide at 24-Hour Fitness. Mike doesn’t have to get himself excited about fitness, he lives it! Mike trains about 50 clients per month and has made personal training his passion for the last eight years. Mike’s recipe for success when starting a fitness program is to have a plan or an organized method. “You don’t just decide that you are going to climb Mt.Everest one day without the proper training and skill. You might be able to climb the first 50 feet but you wouldn’t dare climb the rest without a proper plan. Most people spend more time and effort shopping for the perfect car than they do putting that effort into their fitness”. Mike trains most of his clients two to three days per week, with significant results. The struggling economy hasn’t hurt Mike’s personal training business at all. In fact, his business is better than ever! His clients are so committed to their success that they have made other sacrifices in their life to continue 14 www.renopassport.com
on. “It’s about priorities and investing in a long term commitment towards your health. It’s really simple: Eliminate a few of those restaurant lunches and Starbucks coffee drinks- save money and calories and trade them in for a personal trainer.” Mike is so successful because he is committed to building his knowledge about fitness and health more than any other trainer that I have ever met. He is like a “virtual health and wellness encyclopedia.” Mike has also been involved in fitness TV, he is a Nevada State champion for bench press, a weight lifting competitor, and has over six certifications in personal training, corrective exercise and post rehab. If you would like to give Mike a try, you can visit him at the 24-Hour Fitness at Sky Mountain Drive in Reno. We’re at Goldfinger (1060 Telegraph St.; 775.331.4007), the newest addition to Reno’s slew of strip clubs. The club stands out because of its impressive list of features: second-story VIP area with separate bar that overlooks the dance stage; fancy VIP booths with touch-screen menus that you can use to order anything from a cocktail to a private dance; a machine that rains $1 bills over the stage when you put in a $20 bill; just to name a few of the amenities. The club also has a very classy looking restaurant called the Trophy Room in the back, complete with a separate stage. Cover charge is $5 for the main room and $10 for all-access, including the upstairs VIP area and Trophy Room. Free entry before 8 p.m. Ladies, couples, military, police and firefighters are always let in free.

Joey Gilbert, the 32-yearold boxer, three-time collegiate champion and University of Nevada, Reno alumni, will be fighting Jesse Brinkley, 32, of Fernley, on Feb. 14. Both fighters have hometown roots and both gained national attention after being featured on the reality boxing show “The Contender” in 2005. During their time on the reality show together, it is reported that Brinkley acted as a friend and advisor to GIlbert, but later suspected Gilbert of playing “mind games.” The two will fight at the Reno Events Center. -Danny Riggs

Black History Month Jack Johnson

Ninety-nine years ago, Reno was a humble backwater of saloons, casinos, rails, sagebrush and sand. A sleepy crossroads with little more to offer but cheap whiskey, prostitution, craps and a place to hang one’s hat. However, such was not the case on July 4, 1910. For on that day Reno would become the “Center of the Universe” as the host city of “The Fight of the Century.” Under blazing 100-degree heat, two pugilists pitted against each other in a grueling boxing match for the World Heavyweight Championship of the World. “The Dark Menace” vs. “The Great White Hope.” Jack Johnson, the first black heavyweight champ against James Jeffries

Knowing that there was a lot of money to be made, Reno offered a 20,000-seat stadium, central rail lines, and a guarantee from the mayor there would be no anti-boxing protests or race riots.
the former champion lured out of retirement in hopes of restoring the title back to its “rightful place”—with a white man, as he said. For months, boxing promoter Tex Rickard searched for a venue to hold such an emotionally charged bout. His first choice was San Francisco. Unfortunately, in an era that embraced Jim Crowe laws and upheld the de facto white supremacist status quo, no city with any sense of decency wished to be remembered as, “That vulgar hamlet that permitted the pairing of a white versus a Negro.” Except Reno. Knowing that there was a lot of money to be made, Reno offered a 20,000-seat stadium, central rail lines, and a guarantee from the mayor there would be no anti-boxing protests or race riots. Extra sheriff’s deputies were sworn in and makeshift tents and facilities erected to cater the more than 30,000 strong Exodus of fans that were to descend upon the Biggest Little City. In 15 punishing rounds, Johnson turned Jeffries into a “Great White Disappointment,” earning himself the undisputed heavyweight title and the $127 thousand purse—all the while sparking a powder keg of race riots nationwide. It is amazing how far we have come as a people for the same community that once hung its head in sorrow for having witnessed a minority defeat the establishment now has changed so dramatically as to vote in record numbers for a minority over the establishment. Remarkable the difference a century makes. By John Knott

It’s impossible to be in a room with this kid and not feel inspired to write or do something creative—because this kid can write. His name’s Christopher Troise. He’s thirteen. He draws, enjoys video games, plays trumpet, likes girls, and wrote a play that takes the audience into a new reality. In the play, the main character, Kristoff, is given away at birth, and has never met his parents. He and his best friend, Chad, go on a quest to find out why. Along the way Chad gets fooled into marriage, Kriatoff battles a Janitor assassin, wins the heart of a girl, and woos everyone in the crowd. Christopher played Kristoff in the play. Kristoff discovers his parents are alive and that he was sent away for his own protection. With that in mind, Kristoff and Chad storm the castle and defeat the nasty villain Corneluis and all his evil henchmen. The roaring crowd was astonished at the happy and complete ending but left thirsty for more. The big question is: will Christopher write another play? According to Christopher’s mother, Kathy Grimm-Tucker, he was glow-

ing after receiving a royalty check of $100. And, “he’s thinking about doing a sequel,” she says. The play, “A Tale about a Fairy Tale” was roll-around-on-the-ground-funny. It packed the Laxalt Auditorium on West Second Street three nights straight. Christopher had hoped that his play would be great, “But I had no idea it was going to be as successful as it was,” he says. Christopher started writing this play at the tender age of 12. “This was my first (professional) writing (gig)” Christopher said. Christopher’s enthusiasm is uncontainable. He has big plans for his writing future. And with such a great start, who’s going to stop him? By Trever Crow

Skate the season: hidden skating hot spots
It’s never too cold to skate. Not for Reno’s elite skateboarders, at least. So, if you’re up to skating through the snow and sleet, check out these little-known skate heavens scattered around Reno. We even gave you directions. Spot 1: “The Death Pad” (Manual tricks and Grinders) A perfect concrete block with no cracks and a 4-foot drop. Now cut, the spot originally got its name from the large pipes coming out of the ground on the topside of the block, creating a near death experience every time! Directions: Take a left on Sierra Center Pkwy off S. Virginia St. until you hit Maestro Dr, take another left into the warehouses, look directly behind Target. Spot 2: “Galena Ditch” (Bank to Ledge) Labeled for years as the best ditch on the west coast, the city filled it with large boulders to keep the skaters out. Last summer the HELP US cast spent four straight days cleaning the ditch and brought it back to life. Directions: South on 395, get off at Damonte Ranch, go right, at the first light take a left, go until you get to bridge and take a right into the warehouses, just before you reach 24 www.renopassport.com
it, follow the ditch to the back and look left. Spot 3: “The Eternal Rail” (Bank to Bar) The perfect bank to bar with all the runway you need, nobody to kick you out, and more possibilities than one skater can imagine. Hittable both ways, that’s up and down, the spot has been featured in over seven professional skate videos. Directions: Take a left on Stanford Way off Greg St, turn right onto Hardy Way. Spot 4: “The 4-Block” (Flip Tricks aka Hammers) One of Reno’s newest spots, the 4 Block is an oversized four-stair with a two-stair at its base; BIG tricks are the name of the game! Directions: Take E. 2nd St, behind Renown, until you hit Giroux St. where you take a left. Editors note: Chase McMullen is a local filmmaker who recently produced the skating documentary “HELP US,” the first professional skate video to come out of Reno. For more information, visit: www.
